I go here frequently. The food is good and service is fast. Today they get a one star due to an issue they refuse to address. I go to pay and am told my card declined. Weird but okay. I give them a different one and again, declined. That is really odd so I say try a third one and am told again declined. I have cash so i figure their system must be askew. I go to pay and see all three transactions approved on my phone. I show the cashier and he goes and gets someone else. That woman is telling someone else what happened and I tried to show her and tell them I needed the amount credited back. She became rude and told me to just wait a minute. Then she tells me it was not approved and that there is nothing they can do about it. That it's on me now. I again tell them that I need this credited back as I am not paying four times for one meal. Again, I am basically told it isn't their issue. I ask who I can call back at the restaurant to discuss and I was told that if I had an issue with the charges to call the card companies. This was just ridiculous. I am filing dispute claims as well as looking into a BBB claim as well. If you go here bring cash. read more

PROs: Great For Groups! Prices are excellent. Proximity to the major medical offices and law firms. A local hot spot for anyone with adventurous taste buds. Bathrooms are pretty clean. Delicious food. Service is fast. Cons: Language Barrier with staff ( not all staff have English has their first language but a smile and broken Spanish is always met with jovial responses). Menu is really big ( though my friend Jo claims to have eaten everything on the menu and said she liked everything.) And I get a sense from the staff that if you stay longer than 45 minutes they want you gone. Warning: Watch out for the occasional loud drunk and/or fight!!! And second, the chips come with salsa but order the queso. It's an extra charge of $3 but it's worth it! read more

I knew it wouldn't be good when the waiter acted like seating us was some kind of ordeal. Two adults and a child--oh, the agony! We had to ask him for menus and silverware. We told him we needed a few minutes to decide on our orders and, no lie, he came back less than a minute later. One of our orders was incorrect when the food arrived--no big deal--but the small portion of chicken in the correct order was laughable. Yep--12 bucks for what was mostly a plate of rice. My side order of chile rellenos was even more pathetic. It was essentially a plate of melted cheese with a bit of ground beef and two tiny shreds of pepper. Big waste of time and money. read more

We went to the restaurant on Langhorne what a big mistake. We had been there once before and the service was terrible. This time the service was ok not great but acceptable. It was the food OMG! I a born and raised in California so when it comes to Mexican we have had the best but never before have I had a red sauce that tasted like Italian spaghetti sauce. The rest of the food was bland, yes bland the Guacamole didn't even have the taste of avocado it was terrible! The only food that was okay was the flour tortillas, you can't mess up heating a tortilla! Cheese tasted like no cheese at all appeared to be imitation. The fame chain Mexican restaurant of Lynchburg gets a 4 stars for me. I had tried La Carreta twice and both times I had the steak and chicken fajitas and both did not disappoint. The portions are HUGE and could be eaten in at least two seatings. The flavor was there, not to salty and spices were just right. Their sweet tea is also not too shabby. I will definitely recommend this family friendly restaurant to someone wanting a quick Mexican bite. read more

Lynchburg has more Mexican restaurants than it can handle, but when it comes down to it, La Carreta is my favorite. I love that I can go to one of its 7 (or more) locations and the food is pretty much exactly the same. Since college, Langhorne Road has been by location of choice, not only because of proximity, but because I feel like they do the food best. The chips are always warm and crisp, never stale or salty. The salsa is spicy and the service is always on point and fast. I have a few favorite items. For lunch, I always get the lunch burrito fajita, filled with grilled chicken, peppers, onions, and tomato, topped with guac, sour cream, pico, and a side of refried beans. This is a TON of food and I typically don't eat dinner if I eat lunch here. The food is always hot, the pico is fresh, and the guac is creamy. Plus, they pour cheese sauce all over it, and who could complain about that? For dinner, I have several things I like. The taco salad is delicious, I like to stir it all together and slowly break the shell apart and scoop up the mixture in the middle. I also like the chicken tacos, though the shredded chicken that they use sometimes is watery, which causes the bottom of the crunch taco shells to fall apart. The fajitas are enough food that you could split it with someone else, get extra shells, and be fine. I also love the burrito fajita for dinner and the quesadilla grande is a feat to complete, but is so so good. I'm not claiming this to be authentic Mexican food, but most people don't go here expecting authentic Mexican, they come expecting the Tex-Mex style food we've come to expect from a lot of places these days. This food is consistently good, fast, hot, and cheap. We always compare Mexican in other cities to this and it typically doesn't compare. read more

I certainly wouldn't put Lynchburg up as a place where you would expect to find good Mexican food. La Carreta is competent, but ultimately limited in its options and certainly flavor. The staff is very friendly, everything is fast, its very clean, good decor, and the prices are very reasonable. My big disappointment is flavor. The red stuff they bring with the chips is among the most bland and uninteresting salsas ever produced outside of a McDonalds restaurant. The texture is so-so, but all you get is the taste of tomato. Kinda like ketchup, except with less flavor. I hate to criticize too much, but there is salvation to be found. The special sauce they offer with some of their dishes is pretty darn good. Spare the poor, innocent, corn chips and request the special sauce so their lives are not wasted in vain. I had grilled soft tacos. In keeping with the theme, they are lightly seasoned as delivered. Again, very hot and fresh - just absent a lot of flavor. Tortillas are eerily reminiscent of those purchased at the grocery store. Rice is pretty good, but the beans dive back into mediocrity. Nobody would argue that Mexican food is incredibly complex, so the very limited menu is kind of a surprise. On the plus side, they offer nearly every possible combination plate imaginable. Again, I don't want to be hard on La Carreta because I think there is potential. They would easily get a star more - maybe even two - if they worked up the menu, added some flavor, and boosted the tortillas and beans. Was it bad? Nope. Was it good enough to make me go back for more? Only if I couldn't wait to get home for better Mexican food. If you live in the Lynchburg area and are craving good Mexican, take the trip to Abuelo's in Roanoke near the mall. Yes it is a chain, but a pretty darn good one with a modest hike in prices over La Carreta. Gas is cheap again, so squander a little and reward your taste buds. Alternatively, hit Macchu Picchu for a very flavorful and unique dining experience. read more

Compared to the other locations in Lynchburg/Madison Heights, the Langhorne road location is the best, imho. Take my word for it, as I have even been in the kitchens. I personally like the salsa. It is different from any salsa that I have tasted. The place is usually busy everyday, but fridays are crazy! I'm not sure about the previous comments on wether it is authentic mexican food or not. If I could give three and a half stars I probably would. The service was fairly quick but with a very unconcerned and busy attitude which was understandable because the place was busy. The food was hot and pretty darn tasty although not really greatest quality. Overall it's a great bang for your buck mainly because it's decent food for really cheap. We had both the shrimp and chicken Dakotas and didn't even come close to finishing. Overall an above average mediocre quality Mexican meal. read more

My first visit to this La Carreta store on a Thursday for lunch after a visit to a doctor's office nearby. It is, of course, very much like the several other La Caretta outlets, but I'd say this one is a bit better, altho not quite as good as Lola's or El Camino (thus only 4 stars) I had the Norteno Burrito and it was excellent. I enjoyed the roasted onions and cheese sauce, and the rice was paired with several shrimp. Perfectly balanced heat. We had all the chips we could eat. My partner had the Huevos Rancheros, "without heat", as she requested. (She's a wimp.) Lots of parking, lots of good efficient service and the Mexican-ish decor was very pleasant. read more

My experiences with La Carreta have always been so so. In a nutshell, the food is fairly good and the atmosphere changes depending on when you go (and which location you go to). I tend to enjoy more laid back restaurants where I don't have to worry about dressing up much to go and enjoy a decent meal, and this is definitely one of those places. They usually have ESPN or a soccer game on the television, and they are very accommodating with the chips and salsa depending on the waiter/waitress at the time. I can't compare their salsa like others have done here, but they do offer salsas with varying degrees of heat. All you have to do is mention which one you want to the waiter. Speaking of the food... It's good enough for going out for a quick meal with some friends (especially if you're planning on having drinks also). It probably isn't somewhere you would want to go to impress business associates, but it will do the trick for friends and family. As someone else has said, it may not be the closest thing to authentic Mexican but some of the items on the menu are pretty close. Probably an ideal place to go if you want Americanized Mexican cooked in a fancy way, La Caretta is a five star compared to Taco Bell. The prices are reasonable, the drinks are strong (as others have stated, the margarita machine makes this place worth coming back to), and its a relaxing place to grab a bite to eat with a group of friends or family. Definitely a place to try if you're in Lynchburg for any extended period of time, just don't expect anything fancy. This place is for the hungry and thirsty crowd. read more

Food usually comes fairly quickly and you usually get a pretty good amount for the price. Wow, this is lame. Cheese dip runs like cheap paint, that margarita lime just might have been from a plastic fruit bowl, chips were highly comparable to toenail clippings, and like others have mentioned, I too would say the salsa came from a ketchup bottle. Whoa! It un-fortunately doesn't get much better from here. Seriously shocked it is this poor. Chili Relleno was a 3" strip of barely cooked cabbage leaf with a glob of cheese on top. I'm looking for something good to say here and the only thing I see is a descent picture on the flatscreen. Will NOT be back...never....ever! Good God Almighty where to begin? First off, I don't understand the hype for this joint. Is it because people like bland and tasteless food? Then just eat Spanish cuisine! To call this chain a Mexican restaurant is like calling salt sugar. It was an awful experience. When I was finally able to order, I ordered a burrito on their menu, it just says buritto. I ordered in Spanish, as I am fluent in Castilian, and the damn waiter's expression was like he was angry I spoke in Spanish! They then gave me and my guest their "salsa" and chips. Damned salsa tasted exactly like store-bought prego sauce. I called asshole waiter over and asked him in Spanish about the sauce and the jerk responded in broken English that he doesn't know anything about the sauce. Frustrated I let him go, and to rub more salt in my experience, he brings me a burrito..... With nothing but meat in it. I about lost it. I'm from northern California and I've grown up on authentic Mexican and Portuguese food. This is by-far the only Mexican joint I've ever been to where I literally will say that this chain isn't serving Mexican food. And I went to another one in Amherst, the same bullshit there too.
