No, do not eat here; it's that simple. The food was OK, but there is much better nearby. The beer selection was poor and the service was worse.
It should be noted that both my wife and I were servers/bartenders for over 10 years and we live in Washington D.C. so we know how some tourist can behave. We avoid the tourist eateries when we can and we don't expect people to speak English; we try to adapt to the culture we're visiting. But, if you're a server in a tourist area (like Bruxelles' Grand' Place) you should expect to wait on tourist.
We had traveled all day and simply wanted to get lunch while we were hitting the Grand' Place in Brussels. La brouette looked inviting and the menu had what we were looking for. Our server Micha (the name listed on our receipt) was extremely short with us. We chalked it up to him having a bad day until we noticed how nice and pleasant he was with the French speaking tables nearby. We ordered a large cheese plate ($16) specifically because we were going to take it with us to eat with local bread we'd found. As Micha delivered our entrée I asked "can you please put the cheese in a box for us?" "No" was all he uttered. Of course I thought he was joking so I said, "or baggy, we really don't care." He just walked away with the cheese, not saying another word. Not only did he not bring the cheese, but we didn't see him again until he brought the credit card reader, asking my wife for a tip.
We were pissed. Not only did we spend over $60 for Lunch, we're extremely low maintenance, and given our work history we believe in tipping. Micha not only wasted all that food and our $15, but since we then had to buy more cheese somewhere else he cost us ~$30.
We had a number of great experiences in Brussels and a lot of good meals, this was simply not one of them. read more
