I learned about this hidden gem known as "La Bodega" by accident, but I'm so glad I did! Although quite a drive from our area of Orange County (OC) to Long Beach, the photos of "La Bodega's" Pollo Asado (aka chargrilled chicken) on Yelp looked so good, we had make the trip! As we made the drive from OC to Long Beach, we started to wonder if we were in the right place. But we finally saw it: that glorious smoke traveling across Anaheim Street. With smoke billowing from this very humble little neighborhood market, "La Bodega" grills whole chickens in their parking lot over an open mesquite charcoal flame, with a distinctively delicious smoky aroma that you can literally smell down the street. Parking can be a challenge at times, but do not let that discourage you. Just quietly park on one of the neighborhood streets, & make the walk. Totally worth it! The market itself, is small & a bit "tight," but it features fresh meats, fruits, dairy, many Latin specialties, & an ice cream shop. Order & pay for your chicken inside at the front counter, grab your receipt, & head outside for that tasty, smoky, goodness. Give the "grill-master" your receipt, & he will literally let you pick your own chicken(s) to-go! Oh! And this chicken is nothing short of amazing...fresh, juicy, & with a smoky mesquite charcoal flavor. One bite & we said, "El Pollo WHO???" Yes...it was THAT amazing. Only downside: They do not have ready-made side-orders. So we simply make our own fresh salsa, tortillas, beans, rice, & plantains at home, to accompany that yummy chargrilled chicken. So delicious! Being the epitome of "don't judge a book by its cover," "La Bodega" is nothing fancy, but overall, this spot is definitely worth the trip for some good, authentic Pollo Asado. Love the wide selection of aguas frescas and fresh cut fruit plates, plus ice cream if I was skinny

We hit this place almost every weekend. We're either get charred chickens (which as I write this, are $10 a chicken), or marinated carne asada, or chicken asada (pollo asada). Now, remember, the chickens and both asadas are excellent for not only fajitas, but for making burritos and tacos too! And that's exactly what our family does ... we make fajitas one weekend, tacos the next weekend, and burritos the next. Oh, they do not give beans and rice with their chickens anymore (if they ever did) but they do give you salsa with each chicken ... more than you will ever use. And this Bodega sells EVERYTHING you need for fajitas, tacos or burritos. It's almost like they intentionally stock with fajita, tacos or burrito supplies with their endless choices of tortillas and salsas, hot sauces, and a full blown Hispanic themed produce department. But they also have an incredible butcher department, all the drinks (including beer/wine) and they have an entire ice cream counter with all the Hispanic favorites. Don't pass on their Mexicana Crema which they make there but kinda keep hidden on one end of the butcher case ... "it is the bomb" according to my Mexican/Honduran daughter-in-law and her parents. I will stop in any neighborhood at any time when i see 2 huge grills smoking up the whole block grilling hundreds of full chickens. This is what I live for. Lol The setup outside is eye catching. Massive grills with hundreds of full chickens with varying degrees of being cooked in front of a bodega supermarket. Go inside the bodega and you go the cash register and pay for your chicken. It was like $4.50 for a half and $7.50 for a full chicken. They give you an official sticky pad with what u paid for and a number. Go outside and wait with everyone else for your food. The workers take their time with fulfilling the orders and everyone just hangs out waiting and sitting on milk crates etc patiently waiting for your number to be called. When it is called its finally time....your chicken order! The 2 workers carefully picked out a cooked chicken that was ready especially for me. (They literally talked about which one to grab) The flavor of the chicken was a slightly spicy dry rub and they give you a bag of a spicy salsa for the top of it. What a great taste!!! And the salsa taste just like water. Literally no spice. I stopped going there a long time ago, because down the street, there's another one with bigger chickens and cheaper. .., my gf & I frequent La Bodega whenever we wanna bbq something tasty. This last time however wasn't as great. We came here yesterday to stock up on our own little Cinco de Mayo feast. As soon as we try to pull up, a 3 yr. old was walking around the parking lot w/ a grocery bag unattended? WTF? We stop immedietely to avoid hitting him. We wait & look around wondering where his parents were. Then a truck pulls up & blocks us from getting in (probably his family). They were yelling at him through their windows for a few minutes as he was picking up groceries that fell from his bag. Alright seriously, who leaves their kid behind @ the market? I honk because we were blocking the street so the truck moves out of the way & finally lets us in. Those idiots seriously pissed me off. So we park & walk in excited to do some shopping. My gf & I were in their produce section checking out their watermelons w/ other fruits & veggies. We notice 2 mountains of bad fruit. One was lemons, & the other was oranges. It was embarrassing to look at, I know every store needs to fill their stock, but w/ fruit that was as bad as that, I'd rather had left it bare. We skipped on the lemons, but we grabbed some corn, green onions, pasilla peppers, & a watermelon. Then we hit their deli for some chicken, carne asada, guacamole, salsa, shrimp ceviche, & sour cream. The guys that work behind the deli are always cool & very helpful. As always everything was priced to our liking & we walked out satisfied. As soon as we get home, I start to cook everything up. When I unwrapped the corn, about half of what I bought was bad. I had to break half of the cobs of corn in half because the other half wasn't good, it was dissapointing. After all was said & done, we enjoyed our little feast. The meat was delicious as always. Guacamole had a nice kick to it, & the salsa was great too. We were stuffed & pleased w/ what we had. Then come to find out, we had forgotten to try our shrimp ceviche! I take it out of the fridge & dip my chips into it, however the shrimp was hard & somewhat difficult to chew? This was a bad idea, because not long after... My stomach was f*cked. I had stomach pains all night & a bad case of, well, you know. Out of all the things we ate, the shrimp ceviche was the only thing my gf didn't eat & she was fine, so we know something was up. We really love La Bodega, but from now on we're staying away from their ceviche. Hopefully the produce is fresher & has a better quality next time. read more

Don't be scared of the Mexican meat market!! I know to a lot of Gringos like myself, this place can look intimidating, inside and out. But let me assure you, its oookay! La Bodega was my 5th or 6th attempt to find a decent Mexican Meat Market in SoCal. In Houston, TX these types of places are popular and have the best marinated fajitas to grill up at home. La Bodega has the best I could find in SoCal. The Fijitas Preparadas Rancheras are the way to go. Grill em up at home and serve with tortillias and fresh guacamole and salsa from La Bodega and your BBQ is a hit!! The mouth watering, falling apart, savory fajitas are as addicting as crack! Produce is a fraction of the price of the conventional grocery stores, and all the meats are well priced and great looking. People there are always friendly and enjoy my horrible attempt at their beautiful language. 4 outta 5 times I go I walk out with a gift from them sometimes free salsa, sometimes free 2 liters of Coke. I've been looking for a solid Carniceria nearby my place in Long Beach, and La Bodega did not disappoint. On arrival, I was greeted by the smell of chicken over a mesquite grill. My luck continued as the asadero offered me and pals a taste, it was fire!! Inside they have all the necessities needed to accomplish my goal of a carne asada back home. I ordered 3lbs of the pre-marinaded skirt steak, a bit more conversation with the butcher and I scored a chicharon sample too, nice!! Back home i grilled the meat over mesquite charcoal, the meat was tender and the marinade delicious. And now I can say I found my spot. read more

Their produce and fresh meat and seafood is amazing. Puts mainstream, national grocery stores to shame. I went here for some carne asada, and was not disappointed. For $4 a pound, I got some of the tastiest, marinated carne asada ever. I also picked up some fresh chile verde ($1.95) and tortillas and chips and miscellaneous other food stuffs. Something I bought qualified me for 2 free 2-liters of soda. I parked in the lot, but someone still helped me to my car. (Totally unnecessary but nice just the same) Prices were great, especially on meat and seafood. The produce looked amazing, way better than any of the crap I've seen at albertsons. They have a small variety of canned and pre-packaged goods, but that's not their specialty. The parking lot is small and full of pot holes and rough asphalt. You're lucky if you find one person that speaks english, but if that bothers you, you're shopping in the way wrong neighborhood. Overall, this is a win. read more

I come here EVERY week for their carne asada. I have never decided to write a review until now. The carne asada meat is so so delicious and fresh. I buy the unseasoned carne so that I can season/marinate how I want to, but I have also tried their marinated carne, AMAZING. I wish I could figure out how they season it. I save a lot of money by coming here and it's close by for me. Their produce sometimes is a hit or miss but usually a hit, and so cheap it's unbelievable. Their customer service is always superb. Following other yelpers reviews, I ignored my "spidey senses" about neighborhood and the parking lot with transients and gave this place a try. This place is so far the best meat market i've found in LBC. they have a wide variety of cuts and preparations. the inside is clean and well stocked. The staff is helpful and treated me like I'd been going there for years. The prices were pretty reasonable considering the quality and service. I'm going back for all of my summer asados. read more

This is a very conflicting review, because if I had to rate the store itself, it would definitely be a 1 or a 2 on a fresh day. But on weekends it's got 4-star BBQ'd chicken and a 5+ star salsa. Every weekend been driving by on Anaheim, checking out the plumes of smoke coming from the chicken man, so I decided to stop and check it out. The chicken is very good - hickory chargrilled at $7 a whole chicken. But what really got me was the salsa. Three nights in a row I was like "damn, that's some good salsa." And I eat salsa all the time. On everything. But this salsa's something special. Comes ghetto-style, in a plastic baggie tied off on one end. As for the market, buy the produce at your own risk. I went in to pay for the chicken and it smelled fuuunkaaay. I might come back to try the carne asada though and get me some more of that chicken and salsa. read more

Great little market in the Heart of the LBC. Like everyone else says don't be afraid of this place. They have some of the best carne asada that I have ever had. The marinade is perfect with the right amount of heat and citrus. Salsa!! Oh they have salsa. Three or four different homemade salsas. They are all super hot and killer but so much flavor. I have had two kinds and they kill me with the heat but I can't stop eating it. I tried one when I was there and thought I was going to die. My husband saw my face and started laughing. I was trying to be cool and not let everyone know how bad it burned but I guess it didn't work. It was so good though that I bought that one the second time around. Oh and the Guacamole, OH so tasty and delicious. The people who work there have always been really nice and accommodating as well. I always look way out of place when I am there but never feel out of place. You should make sure you make a trip here if you want some good meat and anything else. read more

Very nice people, I would go there based on their customer service. The lady at the cash register is great!! This was my 2nd time here, I came in on July 4th for some carne ranchera, salsa, and guacamole, and liked the salsa so much, I had to come back for more today. Their red, and green salsas are excellent, the guacamole is awesome. I live 6 miles away, but it is definitely worth the drive. I came here based on the other reviews of the carne asada. The neighborhood is sketchy and the parking lot is small but please don't let that keep you away. Honestly- my whole life- I've never had more delicious carne asada or chicken asada. I'm not sure what they do to make their meats so delicious- but it's incredibly good. I've also tried their green salsa- looks almost like guacamole- omg omg it's sooooooo gooooood! BUT it's extremely spicy so watch out. It's all delicious! *This is my store to shop for meat. They sell the best chorizo and marinated chicken. *Every Thursday they have a weekly special. My favorite one is the 100 piece Guerrero Tortillas for $2.99. The produce is some of the best around these markets. Produce is fresh and cheap, of course not as cheap as the super markets but cheaper than other little markets. *Bad side is most of the butchers do not wear gloves. Sometimes they do but it is not a consistent thing. I have complained about a butcher, thick shape, in his late 60's once I order a pound of chicken fajitas and he went over the 1lb what he did next disgusted me. Butcher took out pieces of fajitas with his bare hand. * I complained to the manager about it, of course they give him a lecture but next thing you know he is not wearing gloves. Good thing he does not take my meat orders anymore. Another young butcher who wears eyeglasses and is young has such a negative angry attitude. I always go for the light skinned bearded young butcher he gives great customer service. I would had given this store 5 stars if it wasn't because of the butchers not wearing gloves. read more
