They normally take large parties by reservation but worked with us. Note: reservations are seated first and walk in's second. Since we did not make reservations and we had a larger party we were seated separately but we were okay with that. They could of turned us away but they made it work and that's all that matters. Very nice french/Italian restaurant in the Carmel area. Definitely a must visit if you are in the area. We were visiting and found this place since it was highly rated. Be prepared for a wait and some difficulty finding parking (lots of street parking) since this is a popular spot. That said, it is well worth the wait! The interior is very ornate like a European cottage ambiance and the service was classy and efficient. I would recommend calling to reserve ahead of time, but if you are okay waiting, they do accept walk ins. For 2 people, it was about 35 min wait on a Thursday, so expect it to be more on weekends. Now, to the food: - Soup du Jour: changes depending on day. It was a tomato bisque for us and was delicious - Pains du jour: nice bread with butter/olive oil dip. Delicious! We got it with the soup and it paired very well together, however, it is also good alone. - Spaghetti sonrero: my personal favorite. Very very good especially if you love seafood! Waitress grabbed my menu out of my hands before I could order + she forgot to serve us our appetizer and our drinks. I don't know her name but she had short hair and wore a puffer vest. The gnocchi wasn't anything special, just dough in cheese sauce (which didn't taste great... the other review about food poisoning isn't surprising). The "linguine pescator" was bland and the lobster was very dry. The "poisson méditerranéen", which is supposedly pan-seared fish, was a very soggy and tasteless fillet. I love bicycles, we all know this! 200-300 miles a week in and out of the saddle, every week on repeat for years now but that's not why I chose to book La Bicyclette (although I love most things cycling). La Bicyclette is consistently one of the most booked restaurants in Carmel and the last time we were here, we dined at several other places. When I asked a friend for his dinner suggestions (his friends have a vacation home in Pebble Beach and him and his husband are up here a lot), he named La Bicylcette :) Luckily I had already made a booking here the week before I'd asked him ;) great minds! My bestie and I had dinner here on Saturday and the place is just as charming as can be. Smells incredible the moment you walk through the door. Start to finish, I really enjoyed everything about it. I started with a glass of their Clos du Caillou but didn't finish it since I was running the Big Sur Marathon the next morning and haven't been consuming a lot of alcohol lately. We started with the Soup du Jour (mushroom) and it was so tasty. I've got to make this at home soon. We shared the artichoke pizza (Andrew Molera) and the pasta and lobster Spaghettini Sanremo (lobster pasta with English peas and burrata). The pizza was really fabulous! The crust was probably one of the best we've had. My all time favorite pizza is Seirinkan in Tokyo and while this crust was different than that, it really stood out to us. I also loved the chili oil offering since I love all things spicy. The pasta was tasty too! I've been obsessed with English peas lately and seem to find them on every menu. The lobster was also plentiful for the price point on this entrée which is always appreciated. We skipped dessert as much as I would have liked to enjoy something, we were much too full and I'd usually take something to go but we knew we just didn't have the capacity for it. We came by 6 pm and they said that we can come back by 7:15 pm and that they would seat us. The ambiance and the décor capture the French vibe. Had myself a lovely glass of Bordeaux here, their glasses were personalized and were nice and thin . Started with the bread service with warm butter and olive oil. Loved the airy chewy bread. Ordered the champignons pizza, assorted mushrooms, mozzarella, thyme, caramelized onion purée and truffle oil. This was a melt in your mouth decadent pizza. Enjoyed every bite thoroughly. They gave us chili oil to drizzle if needed. Perfect thin crust. So much flavor, but still amazingly light. Then the Affogato! Served with a Madeline, this was super rich espresso, poured on top of a nice rich vanilla ice cream. The combination of the roses so took the sweetness factor away, and made it creamy coffee with a thickness of mousse. So good. This was one very list as a must eat place, and I see why it was. She provided us quickly with waters for our kids and coloring pages with crayons. She also offered to bring our pizzas first so that the kids wouldn't be too antsy which was appreciated! We ordered the oysters du jour and autumn salad as starters to share, a mushroom pizza and pepperoni pizza as well as the seafood spaghetti (aka spaghetti amalfitana). The oysters were tasty with the parsley lemon butter and salad was refreshing filled with seasonal offerings such as persimmon and pomegranate. The wood fired pizzas were also delicious and my toddler ate a healthy portion. However my favorite was the spaghetti amalfitana. The pasta had a a chewy QQ texture and had a seafood umami that was quite addicting. Overall, a particularly satisfying lunch! It's no wonder there's often a long wait for this place. My friends and I came here for a very special occasion-- my good friend's bachelorette dinner and the restaurant did an excellent job at providing special accommodations for us! There was even a large curtain that we could use as a partition so we could enjoy our celebration without any distractions and to make it more intimate. I really appreciated these small details! Upon looking at the menu everything used fresh and seasonal ingredients! For the table, we ordered the assorted wood-fired bread and shared a few plates of the Choux au Feu de Bois, which were wood-fired Brussels Sprouts with Spanish chorizo. The bread was hot, fresh, and had a perfect chew. The brussels sprouts were bright, lightly roasted, and the celery root puree underneath was creamy and sharp from the pecorino. Delicious! For my main, I ordered the heavenly Steak au Poivre. My mouth waters as I write this review. This dish consisted of pan-seared filet mignon, peppercorn cognac sauce, truffle pommes frittes, and a mixed green salad. The filet mignon was juicy, tender, and rich. The fries were thin, crispy, and well-seasoned. The thick truffle aioli on the side was buttery yet refreshing with the hot fries. I cleared my plates and soon quickly found myself scraping the last remanence of my sauces with our fresh bread. I had a fun time celebrating my friend and the food made it even more special! At $36, the charcuterie starter and accompanying baguette was embarrassingly minimalistic. The $18 Ensalada Rosa was bland and missing the listed olives. The $20 mushroom caps were too garlicky, confusingly served in a dish intended for escargot, and accompanied by only two small slices of bread. The $62 Steak Au Poivre was underdone despite requesting medium rare when ordering. When brought to server's attention, he actually suggested warming up the remaining filet to the requested doneness instead of preparing a new filet. No adjustment for this entree error was made to our final dinner bill. Frankly, the walk up - no reservation - rejection scene creates only the illusion of a gastronomical buzz. Ashten, our server, went above and beyond to make us feel welcome, despite clearly feeling uneasy about the situation herself. However, the issues continued when the host returned, asked for my number as if we didn't have a reservation, and then abruptly removed the champagne from our table and took it elsewhere--making us feel like we had done something wrong. Then came the food. We ordered a steak, which arrived bright pink, so we sent it back. When it returned, it was clear the chef had simply seared the open sides and plated it again, so we had to send it back once more. By the third time, the steak had been cut so many times that it resembled ground beef, yet we were still expected to eat it. This was an incredibly disappointing experience, especially considering how much we love La Bicyclette. We had high expectations for a special birthday celebration, but instead, the evening felt chaotic and anything but special. Snagged the last open table for 2 as soon as they opened for Sunday brunch at 11! The wait after us became no joke as my partner and I would overhear the waitress telling people that the next available table until 12:30. By the time we left around 12:30, she was telling people there wouldn't be an open table until 2:45. Definitely be sure to come here early to beat the long wait! Between the two of us, we ordered the champignone pizza and a new special dish which name I forgot (it was on a separate sheet of the menu). That being said, the menu was a bit small. Nonetheless, we were pretty satisfied with our order! The pizza was delicious with the chili oil they offered at the table - I loved the oyster mushroom on the pizza that I don't see often. The ahi tuna dish was great but a bit small even for someone who may have eaten it alone. But most of the French wines by the bottle were pretty pricey. Since we were having different entrees, we got wine by the glass, which was pretty good. This is French bistro in style. It's very reminiscent of Paris bistros. We shared several appetizers: oysters mornay, olives, bread, avocado citrus salad. They were all lovely. We each had a different entree. I had a special dish, a deconstructed cassoulet with a lamb chop in the center. It was really good, though not much like a real cassoulet. My wife had a lovely risotto. Our friends had the fish of the day and the Beef Bourginon. They loved both. We shared the crème brûlée and the pot du chocolat for dessert. They were both lovely. The service was on point too. The whole evening was lovely and we really enjoyed it. I'd say the only down side is the menu is very limited. I would have liked to have seen more options. But, even with that, it was very good. It's not for those who want a budget meal. It was $100 per person before tip. But we were all fine with that. read more
