This place was very average. Clean and bright. The employees were very nice, but the food was sort of bland. Their spicy sauce helped a lot though. This is one of those experiences where, if I was just taking my food into consideration, I would give La Bamba three stars. But I'm giving it four stars because my kids' BRC burrito (bean, rice, cheese) was great, and my husband liked his meal and has fond memories of visiting La Bamba when he was in college. So four stars it is, but just barely. I think I ordered wrong, first of all. It seems like La Bamba specializes in burritos, and more specifically, "burritos as big as your head," so what did I do? I ordered the nachos. I know! I'm not very smart sometimes. The nachos were fine overall, but the chips were not the best, and I ordered the nachos with ground beef, which was plain. They also use that white queso cheese on the nachos, of which I am not a fan at all. The nachos were topped with a gigantic spread of shredded lettuce over the top. The BRC burrito, though, looked great and my kids ate all of it, which is rare for them. The BRC burrito is not on the menu -- you would need to call and tell them you want to order a burrito with just refried beans, rice and cheese in it. They will probably ask you if you want meat in it, like all Midwestern Mexican restaurants do, so just say no. Then tell them you want no sauce on the burrito -- that you want to be able to hold it in your hand. Do this just for good measure, because you're in Indiana and most Mexican restaurants think burritos and enchiladas are interchangeable. La Bamba has a drive-thru, which is nice. read more

Very disappointed by the burrito and tortas. If there was cheese on either (there was supposed to be), we couldn't taste it. If there was hot sauce on either (there was supposed to be), we couldn't taste it. Steak was salty and otherwise devoid of spice/taste. Neither was special in any way. I compared the enjoyment of eating their food to Taco Bell. My son said I was being overly generous. La Bamba used to be fantastic. I used to go to the original La Bamba in Champaign, IL when I was in college. First time I had tortas and there was something amazing about the place; both the food and the people running it. Quick, easy, and tasty. This "hole in the wall" has great Mexican style (cilantro & onion) tacos for a little over $2/each. I chose to go with the shredded chicken, but they have plenty of other options. My husband's favorite is the al pastor, but for your more adventurous eater they offer tongue or tripe. They are know for burritos as big as your head, and they really are huge. My husband got one the first time we went, and even though he liked it, we are partial to the Mexican style tacos. They also have two great hot sauces, one red & one green--both were super flavorful. They have a great salsa & a late night drive-thru that local 2nd shift employees hit up! Cheap and authentic style food, what more can you ask for. It's nothing fancy inside, but they take cards and we've never had a bad experience. They are kid friendly, and have high chairs available. There a couple cool, authentic places in town where you can get great tacos and we've now added this one to our list! read more

La Bamba is tucked away in a little strip mall at Teal and Sagamore, but it's worth figuring out how to find it. I'm on an anti-Taco Bell rant at the moment. (The service at local Taco Bells is terribly slow.) So I tried La Bamba. This is authentic Mexican food, well made, and tasty. There is a selection of Mexican sodas in the drink case. However, no iced tea (?). It's not far from work and I really should be stopping here more often. read more

I've lived here my whole life and just tried this place for the first time today. It did not disappoint! I split a "burrito as big as your head" with my mom and it was more than enough to fill us both up and tasted great! My favorite thing was the .99c beef tacos.. can't beat that read more

I ordered three tacos. chorizo, al pastor, tripe. Tacos were served with lettuce and tomato. I'll be honest - I didn't look at the full menu before ordering, I just looked at the board listing the taco meats on the counter and picked three. The menu does say they serve them with lettuce/tomato. But why? Who in the world knows. Cilantro & onions is my default expectation at a place serving tripe, al pastor & chorizo tacos. The chorizo taco tasted like the shredded King B beef jerky in those round cans I used to get when I was a kid. Salty, but not interesting at all. Bad taco. The lettuce/tomato ruined it doubly. Al Pastor tasted like overcooked chicken. Unacceptable. Tripe was a disaster. I expect tripe in tacos to be crispy. These were served as a gross wet mess. Disgusting. Absolutely disgusting. One bite. It was about $2 per taco ($1 for beef or pork every day). I can see this place being attractive to *extremely* budget sensitive people. But if you like food that tastes good, stay away. Ok nothing fancy just some good Mexican street food the hot sauce is unique and delicious. Tacos and burritos are their best things.

My roommate found this little hole in the wall Mexican joint while working her delivery job. She told me that they made giant burritos for cheap, and I was on board. She had me at burritos. The place is on the smaller size, but plenty of seating. The employees were okay, not great, but nice enough. I ordered a regular burrito and an order of chips and cheese. The burrito comes with your choice of meat, beans, hot sauce, tomatoes, onions, cheese, and lettuce. I'm pretty picky, so I asked for mine to be made without tomatoes, onions, or lettuce. So, my burrito should have included chicken, beans, hot sauce and cheese. The burrito I received had only one thing in it, chicken. Granted, it was good chicken, but it was missing everything else. I was disappointed. I don't know if there is a difference between "cheese" and "queso" on Mexican menus, but the cheese wasn't the best. I tasted like a melted block of cheese, lacking an kind of spice or flavor. The chips were really good though, as was the salsa. Pros: La Bamba was really quick. We were in and out within 5 minutes. Good value. Cons: The cheese. My sad burrito. I may go back another time and give them another go, because I have heard good things. Right now though, I'd say this a step below some other Mexican joints in the Lafayette area, but if you're close by and craving some cheaper, fast Mexican food, have at it. read more

I really like this place! You can get burritos in any of three sizes with anything you want on them. My favorite is the combination, with a little of everything on it. Avacado, cut fresh, and sour cream are a little extra. The large flour tortillas are wonderfully thin and tasty and when it is all done it holds together like a burrito should. Their make their own salsa and it is triple good. It comes in two versions: regular and hot. I prefer the regular. For drinks they have fountain pop and some Coke products plus Jaritos pop (limon, pina, etc.) and Sidral pop. If you're not burrito hungry, they have a number of other items. The tacos are really good and very inexpensive. Each one comes on two corn tortillas so you can remove the bottom tortilla if you want and make it into two tacos, giving you more acreage to put the great salsa on! Other choices on the menu include: tortas, quesadillas (great for kids), different types of nachos. They can do vegetarian / meatless dishes. Get in line at the counter, place your order and pay the cashier. by the time you finish paying your food will be ready. Be sure to leave these hard-working folks a generous tip in the tip jar. They also have a drive-up window which is as fast ordering inside. The inside is fun though with big nutty pictures of a guy with a burrito for a head, and various other scenes. This is a mid-western chain that still retains the flavor of a family run kind of place. The food seems very authentic to me. La Bamba is open really late, so if you are closing down the bars (it has been a while since I last did this) and feeling like something to eat before going home, this is a good choice. This place used to be so good. Since the younger girls have started working there it's gone down hill. They don't cook the tortilla at all so it's chewy and grease just pours out due to them not taking the time to strain or brown the meats.
