I thought it was a national holiday because I couldn't understand why everything was closed ... when I asked the lady at the hotel she looked at me with exasperation and said "this is paris and it's sunday". So Sunday in Paris AND it was rainy and we'd already hit up all the museums we wanted to visit. Also after walking about 10-14 miles a day and drinking at every meal, - it finally caught up to us that we were exhausted. This was the closest restaurant we found to our hotel at being open. The menu was a mess to read ... it's like 5 different fonts threw up on it. We ended up with the onion soup which was warm and brothy and actually hit the spot perfectly for such a day. Service was fine ... but was mostly indifferent to our presence since all we were having was the soup. read more

Stopped in and asked to sit in a booth. We were told that the booth was reserved and the only seating available was in the back room (while all the booths and tables were available in the front room except one). We were led to a cramped back room with a handful of tourists at other tables. A few minutes later a few French people came in and asked for table and were seated at one of the tables in the front room. We got up and walked out without ordering. Two friends and I shared several items form the menu. The quality of the food is good and the service is efficient, but I think the price is high for what you get (both in terms of food and service). The assortiment de cochonnailles was a nice platter of cured meats. Nothing too exciting to describe, but enjoyable. L'Assiette Méli-Mélo végétarienne had some nice flavour in their grilled eggplant, but a bit oily. Agneau confit was probably the best dish we ordered. The lamb meat had been cooked to fall-apart-y tenderness and nicely seasoned. Definitely our favourite from the night. We had the gâteau de chocolat for dessert. Not a very memorable cake, but just fine. It was not the most memorable or exciting meal, but it was nice. It certainly was not as terrifying as the other review of this place would suggest. (It's not quite fair to abuse the restaurant for serving raw beef if you order steak tartare....) read more

Didn't need a reservation but had a meal and service that I would have been okay with putting in a reso for. Then again, making a reservation really isn't that hard at all. You just tell someone your name and the time you want to show up and how many people and oh god it is so hard, make it stop make it stop! We ate outside in a little enclosed greenhouse kind of thing, which was good because it started pouring rain during our meal. Don't be alarmed if this happens and it sounds like gunshots are firing off somewhere. That's what rain sounds like in a greenhouse kind of thing. My lady got the foie gras tagliatelle and I had a steak. Both were great. Definitely one of the better meals we had while in Paris. My guess is that most people that stop in here are people who couldn't get a table at the restaurant next door. Two tips for those people: 1. Make a reservation. 1a. Actually, see above. It's kind of hard. Reconsider tip 1. 2. Don't worry. This place is good too. 3. Bonus tip! Double knot your shoelaces when you're going on a long run. It is not good for you to immediately halt cardiovascular activity and then to bend down and lower your head below your heart while attempting to focus on a tedious task like tying a shoelace. You might die. No more tips for today. Eat here if you have the time. It's good. Oh, and open late too. read more

We are staying in the area and wandered over. It was a Sunday night and many of the restaurants seemed to be closed. This darling little restaurant did not disappoint. The waitress was so sweet and friendly and the young man who appeared to be possibly the manager. My husband and I both had the vegetable soup which was more of a puree but excellent and hearty non the less. My husband had the special of the night which was Jambon / ham. It was sliced very thin and more like a jerky but he loved it I had the beef and mash potatoes. The mashed potatoes were very good. My steak lacked seasoning so I added a little salt and pepper and it was very good. The young man recommended a wine for my husband to accompany his entree and he liked it very much. On a cold Paris evening this was the perfect and unpretentious retreat. Perfectly cooked steak, mash potato with olive oil, small salad and, most importantly, large glass of St Estephe. The foie gras was also excellent ( I had to help a colleague out, you understand). The emphasis at L'Ecluse is very much on the wine - and on Bordeaux in particular. Tasting glasses, drinking glasses and an extensive bottle wine list. The smallish traditional menu supports the wine. On this cold evening, L'Ecluse was warming and cosy. But despite the crowding and bustling the service was friendly and attentive. There is a small courtyard / garden at the back despite so should be nice in summer as well. L'Ecluse is located right on Place de la Madeleine just along from Hediard. read more

First night in Paris and could not have been happier with L'Ecluse Madeline. The wait staff was very attentive and knowledgeable about pairing some amazing wines with the great food. I had the Lamb Confit with Ratatoulle and an amazing Bordeaux and thought the culinary Gods were granting me with a gift. It was that good. Have been here at seve or eight times, as my company headquarters is closeby and i always stay in a hotel around this area when I come to Paris. The decor is nothing special, but very homie. Excellent wine selection with changing vin de jour, which is also always good. The food is hearty. Not fancy but very satisfying. My favorites are the cold cut board and the goose and duck plate. But today, i tried their beef stew for the first time and I think it going to be a harder choice next time. read more

We love this wine bar and get here several times a year. The food is good, if not spectacular (Glinda does love the foie gras d'oie), but the main event is the wine. They serve two glass sizes, tasting and drinking. We take the tasting sizes, start with a Saint Amour and a Saint Julien, then progress as far as possible through the menu. No stars that's how horrible barf food this place is. First of all some Asian waiter came running after us to come in and then he gives us the menu and rushes us to order. I ordered "steak" turns out to be hamburger patty, came out blood dripping red. I said this is unsafe to eat and they took it back but still it's literally patty with a fried egg on top with some thrown salad on side. Then they charge for some place setting fee 3 euros per head. If you see a skinny Asian waiter - RUN AWAY!! Do not eat at this restaurant Denny's food is probably 1000times better then this place. Don't get fooled by the pretty red cafe tables - food is just plain out nasty. Oh while the rest of the French people seem to get tap iced water we Americans automatically get served bottled mineral water for 6euros per small bottle. I really loved this place. I spent a good chunk of time in Paris at the hotel Madeleine Plaza (which was also nice. Great view over the rooftops looking towards the Eiffel Tower) a couple spots down. Drinking wine and devouring French cuisine was on the top of my list. This was two years ago and nothing has changed. I was with some family and we are all a bit picky, but wine and a good atmosphere could satisfy about 70% of us. Gives me the chills thinking about the smell of the rain on the streets of that city . Then you walk into this place and its exactly what you wanted to walk into. When mom sees multiple things she wants on the menu it's a miracle. We went two nights consecutively and I ordered some salad with with different Cheeses and cured meats... Probably one of the best salads I have ever had. Another night I ordered lamb with risotto.... Spectacular. Perhaps what pulls it all together was the wine and the people though. Was awesome to just enjoy wine an get locked into conversation with some of the people eating there.
