First time at LMay and thought it was really great! We had the hummus appetizer which was delicious--had a little bit of a kick, which was a nice surprise. I had the filet, which was "like buttah", so good and cooked just how I wanted! My friend had the scallops and shrimp with linguine. I've never seen scallops or shrimp so big. No complaints from my friend! And my other friend had the lobster stuffed something (I don't remember). All I do know is that there were no complaints at our table--the food was phenomenal. Nice, laid back atmosphere. We didn't feel rushed, and we really enjoyed our time there. Chris was our waiter and he was great as well. Super attentive (without being annoying)! This is a favorite of locals. Very warm, inviting atmosphere! The menu changes throughout the year and never fails to satisfy. The Isle of Capri is my favorite pizza! And they always have great appetizers. Great wine selection too. I am not one for desserts, so you are on your own there. The brother/sister duo who run the place are really doing it right. Just passing through Dubuque for a night and decided to try L. May based on other Yelp reviews. My wife and I were completely impressed. Our table was ready as promised, our server, Sadie, was there immediately to begin service and was gracious to check back frequently as we needed time to decide! Sadie was very knowledgeable about the entrees and we both enjoyed our meals immensely. We had the grouper with coconut jasmine rice and the salmon. Both fantastic. Entrees also include a very fresh, delicious salad served family style. Concluded our meal with their specialty brownie dessert. Not to be missed! Our waitress was super awkward and kept interrupting us because she would forget to tell us something. I ordered a house salad ($8) and added shrimp for $10 and got 3 shrimp. It was good, but way overpriced for the portion size. The house dressing was very sour. I've had it in the past and it was good so maybe this was just a bad batch. The spinach artichoke dip was good. We made reservations at this quaint restaurant and they knew we were celebrating our 19th wedding anniversary. They had a nice note on our table upon our arrival wishing us a happy anniversary. A few of the wait staff (in addition to our waiter) stopped to wish us a happy anniversary. The complimentary champagne, the beverages, the food, and the dessert were all wonderful! Went to L May because it was the highest rated restaurant in Dubuque on trip advisor. Service was great! Sometimes restaurants get the timing screwed up and it seems like you wait forever for your food and then it all comes out at the same time. This place had PERFECT timing. Their service was attentive without being overbearing, Food was tasty too. I liked how they brought a piece of each dessert out on a tray and described them all at the same time, that way you could see it. If I'm every in Dubuque I'll head back. read more

I can't say enough about this restaurant. The martini's are very good and the food is spectacular. We have always been pleased with the service. The menu isn't too large and the variety of offerings is perfect. The owners travel throughout the world to search for delicious menu items and you can tell. Our favorites are the lobster lasagna, the salmon and the pizzas. For dessert you can't go wrong with the warm brownie with ice cream. A staff person dropped off menus at our Bed and Breakfast in hopes that we would make them available to our guests. We have a policy that we will not recommend or provide menus to any restaurant we have not experienced ourselves. Well tonight we had an exceptional meal. Cathy, our server was familiar with every item on the menu. She was able to steer us to the entree that best suited our taste. I had the best Mac and Cheese with 5 cheeses baked into perfectly cooked pasta and crisp bacon. Wow! The salmon was fresh, tender and flavorful. Than there was dessert. Warm brownie with vanilla bean ice cream with chocolate and Carmel topping. To die for. Thank you for a wonderful dining experience. Read yelp reviews and made a reservation on their website. This is highly recommended for a Friday night as it was packed. They turned people away. We waited for about ten minutes before being seated. The hostess was a complete ditz. She gave us a great table but she just seemed phoney. She seated her friends first made small talk with everyone and moved at a snails pace. . Her demeanor was the only downside of this place. She just wasn't efficient. Pay with cash and save 5 percent. The brownie desert was outstanding; enough for two. Filet was perfect as was the duck. Our young female waitress was outstanding. She needs to be up at the hostess desk. I have eaten here several times and absolutely loved it. Delicious food, an amazing atmosphere and in a great location. We had or rehearsal dinner here the other day and it was incredible. We came with high expectation and were disappointed by the mediocre pizza. The crust reminded us of Jack's pizza, hard and thin, while the toppings seemed to be good quality. It wasn't bad, but definitely not anything special. The service was adequate, but again nothing special. It was very crowded and the tables were extremely close together, verging on claustrophobic. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our first dining experience here so much last March, we decided to make a reservation there for our anniversary a few weeks ago. First, I have celiac so need a restaurant that provides GF options and are knowledgeable about food preparation. LMay exceeded my expectations on both visits having pizza twice. We shared a delicious salad and then the special that night, the Cuban pizza....amazing! The server was excellent and even surprised us with a glass of bubbly to celebabrate the occasion. My hubby loved the food and prices! We plan to return for my birthday in October, not minding the two hour drive at all! read more

L. May is an excellent restaurant. This is the second time while visiting in Dubuque that I've had the pleasure of dining here. The first time was in September 2016, when I ate skate (a type of fish), and on this second visit, I had a delicious roast vegetable salad and a wonderful cup of their soup of the day--hearty, spicy, flavorful. My dining companions were also extremely pleased. One is a vegetarian and was able to eat well, by choosing the spaghetti squash. Thank you for a wonderful dinner with excellent service. read more

Had a reservation for 3 on Saturday night and they were very accommodating when I changed it to 5 a couple of hours before the reservation. Very nice people and great food! Start with the modern relish tray for your table because it was loaded with interesting tastes and easy to share. Our party had a variety of entrees and they were all excellent. If you're a foodie and heading to Dubuque, this is this your place. Great room. Not big but cozy like the 112 Eatery in Minneapolis. The pizza, in particular, rocks. If your a serious wine geek like me, bring your own. I did and paid a $15 per btl corkage. If not, the wine list is decent and fairly priced. Decent all purpose stems too. This past Friday night they had a great local accoustic singer who dug deep into Simon & Garfunkel, Cat Stevens, and many other favs if your around 55yrs old like us. Love this place and never would have expected to find it in Dubuque. Wish this place was in Minneapolis! Located in a nice safe neighborhood one block north of central downtown. We were in Dubuque and looking for a nice place to eat. Complicating this was my need to eat dairy AND gluten free. Not only were they accommodating, but acted as though this was such a normal request and no bother at all. My food was delicious. The service was perfect - attentive but not overbearing. We plan to be in the area in the fall and this is already on my list. (btw, the other two places I ate in Dubuque were puzzled by the dairy and gluten thing - found a place that cooked hashbrowns in oil that has gluten!) read more

We recently had a rehearsal dinner at L.May and were so impressed with the entire experience. Coming from out of town, we did some research by eating there on several occasions and were never disappointed with any visit. The service was always excellent. The food, no matter what we tried, was great! When we started to work with them for the rehearsal, Lia was knowledgeable and experienced and made it all so easy. I never felt that I was taking a chance and she had my back. The night of the dinner was wonderful from start to finish. Nina was terrific and we all enjoyed the evening without a glitch. Fabulous dinner in downtown Dubuque! What a perfect date night restaurant! Dress up or casual, both suit the excellent ambiance! We had the Osso Bucco, so delish and tender, fell right off the bone! My husband had the bourbon chicken, which looked plain at first, but the flavor was amazing! Cheesecake for dessert was a perfect end to a fabulous dinner! This restaurant was a hit with its pulled pork nachos and its pizza was also fantastic. It had an extensive beer list with detailed ratings, categorization, ibu listing etc. Service on the other hand was awful our virtually ignored us. We waited to order our appetizer for a very long time, then after another 20 min of waiting we finally put in for our pizza order to our friendly waitress. Our food was brought out and water filled by a different individual who was friendly and attentive. The waitress, did come by once to ask how the food was. And then we didn't see her again and had to ask someone else for a box, and eventually we got the bill. If the food wasn't so outstanding I wouldn't go back based on the awful service. The restaurant wasn't incredibly busy, so I'm not sure what happened here. I too work in the service industry. I wish my anniversary dinner would have flowed better. But it was tasty. read more
