This is absolutely one of our favorite local restaurants! Excellent service. We love the menu, the variety, the fresh entrees and salads.

I was visiting from Las Vegas and have been wanting to try L May. It did not disappoint! The atmosphere is absolutely adorable. Quaint and charming yet sophisticated. The place was very busy, and all of the staff were working so very hard while being polite and attentive. We got the spinach and artichoke dip... I can honestly say that this is the BEST I've ever had. It was so creamy and the bread they serve it with was delicious. I also ordered the filet mignon and naturally that was delicious as well. Incredibly flavorful. I probably could have cut it with a fork out was that tender. My friend had the bruschetta which was also beautiful presentation and delicious. Their spin on the Moscow Mule was delicious! I had an excellent evening and will most definitely be back! read more

Outstanding food and service! Ask for Rachel when you visit - she's just awesome! So attentive and personable. We had reservations, were greeted promptly and courteously upon arrival. and were seated immediately. Our group of 4 all had pizzas as our main entrees. We shared the artichoke and spinach dip as an appetizer and two of us shared the house salad and bread. We also had drinks (try the Old Fashioned with brandy - delicious) and dessert. Everything was simply delicious and prices are more than reasonable. The restaurant is very cute - nice bar and dining spaces, as well as a little outdoor patio on the sidewalk in front of the restaurant. The noise level inside was very reasonable and allowed us to converse easily. If we ever visit the area again, we'll definitely be back. Thank you! read more

What a gem! We were traveling to Dubuque to visit some old friends and wanted to take them out for dinner. e chose L May based upon all the great reviews from others. We were not disappointed! Everything was great. A nice boutique style dining areas separate yet you still could feel the vibe. Service was outstanding and when one of our diners needed a cheese free option there was no hesitation in gladly making the change. Al the food was wonderful, Salmon, sea bass, steak and the Mediterranean Scallops/shrimp were completely cleaned up. We had a great server and everyone loved the evening out. Venture out of Galena during your stay to come eat at L. May! I wanted to go back on our 2nd night's stay because I enjoyed my dinner so much here! We had the bruschetta, seafood bouillabaisse, and pork shanks and everything was PERFECT. I wish we had tried a pizza but had no room left to take that down as well. The entrees came with a house salad, they offer a 5% discount for cash payments. Oh, and of course save room for dessert! read more

I was gearing up for a fine meal here but ended up ordering only the buffalo sweat stout and a local beer jubix stout. I almost regret patronizing this place for even this. I was intrigued by the things i heard from others. When i saw the split plates rule, i ran so far away (flock of seagulls band, song). It is the most disrespectful attempt to profit off customers. Instead of the intention of earning more profit, you just lost some major greenbacks. No real foodie respects split plate fees. That's a chicagoland corruption trick. read more

Service was very good as always but the food is definitely not as good as it was the last time we were here. Which was about 2 years ago. My wife got her favorite which is the duck. She said the was good but way too much sauce. I had the filet migon which I ordered medium rare. It came very rare which I asked to have it cooked more. It came back with a deep red warm center which was still rare. I wasn't sending it back a second time. Maybe because we went on Sunday was the reason the food wasn't as good as I remember. The food was wonderful! The service was another thing.... First, having made a reservation a couple days before, I guess we expected a better table than where we weren't crammed up against an exit door and the waitresses and hostess kept tripping over the legs of our chair or bumping into us as they moved past. Next, when our salads were brought out, our server asked us if wanted fresh cracked pepper - we said yes, and she reached across our table to pick up the pepper grinder that was on our table and proceeded to pepper our salad - thanks, we could have done that ourselves! The worst though, was we ordered two desserts, she brings out one then says she is sorry, that we should share the one she brought and if we wanted another after that she would bring it to us... Oh, fair warning - a small cup of coffee is $3.95 and they never ask if you want a refill. Love the food - not sure if the experience was worth it though! read more

Every aspect of the beautiful place is exactly what a restaurant should be. Their food is above and beyond and stuff not found anywhere else and the atmosphere is romantic and caring. The timing between courses is perfect and the staff are the nicest I have ever come across. There is an unspoken respect for customers, food and community in everything they do. I felt so grateful to be able to be there for my birthday. They even left me a birthday gretting on our table and desert. read more

We had made a reservation, but when we entered the restaurant we were not greeted and had to wait 5 minutes before a hostess finally got to us and seated us. They sat us at a table that was too small for our group. The menu was small and unimpressive considering the prices they were asking. The restaurant was trying to pull off a high-class atmosphere, but could not back it up with a creative menu and well-trained staff. read more

My husband and I enjoyed a delicious pizza and salad but the best was the poke appetizer. Not the style I've had in Hawaii but delicious all the same. Large chunks of beautiful raw tuna lightly dressed with sesame oil over quinoa with shaved carrots and radish slices. What a surprise to get such great raw tuna in the midwest. Also our waitress was friendly and service was great even on a pretty busy Saturday evening. I was kind of surprised I was able to make a last minute reservation online. That was super helpful. The filet mignon was delectable and the grilled asparagus with it was perfection - I don't even like asparagus so that says something. My friend had the isle of Capri pizza and it was also delicious, just enough of everything. The menu isn't large, but neither is the restaurant itself. It's cozy! The desserts are good - and gargantuan. I've eaten here on multiple occasions and have ALWAYS had spectacular waitstaff - our particular waiter was probably working on six or seven tables yet somehow we still felt like he was just with us; friendly, conversational, attentive, most importantly without being overbearing (I cannot stand being asked how I'm doing every five minutes). read more

Wow here with just right everything including service. Emily did a fabulous work keeping us going with wonderful food and service. I had shark which is a bit hard to find. Was perfectly prepared presented as was the dubuque pizza. Also a flatbread app of calamari also very good and perfect portion for us. We went for an early dinner on a Saturday. 5:30 was perfect and the place was packed by the time we left. The service was attentive. The prices were on reasonable. We definitely didn't feel rushed or neglected by the servers. Salad was delicious and the warm whole grain bread with sweetened butter felt decadent. The dinners were wonderful. Our youngest ordered off the kids menu (reluctantly because most food off the kids menu is poor quality) and loved it. The serving size was generous for a kids menu and the chef didn't skimp on the quality of a humble grilled cheese. At our table we had pulled pork sandwiches, tacos, pesto, and risotto. Everyone loved their meals. There was a bit of a wait for our server to ask if we wanted dessert. We all decided, before she came, that we were too full for dessert but then she brought the plate that had all the desserts on it, we couldn't resist. So people who comment about the wait for the server to ask about dessert, may not realize that they are doing that on purpose to allow you time to let your food settle a bit before offering you something sweet. When the desserts came they were amazing. Even the cookies and ice cream were deemed the best cookies we've had in a long time. read more

The one word that comes to mind when describing our LMay experience: disastrous. We chose LMay to celebrate three birthdays in our party of eight adults. The fact that it took several minutes to get the hostess's attention and take us to our table was the first indication that the level of service would be sub-par. However, no one could have foreseen what happened next: not two minutes after being seated and waiting to place our drink orders a bus boy dumped an ENTIRE GLASS OF ICE WATER on my mother's lap. I'm not talking about a small table spill with a little bit of run off - I mean a full glass of icy cold water directly into her lap! Now, I have enough friends in the service industry to know that accidents happen, and lucky for this bus boy my mother is an extremely even-tempered person. However, the response, or lack thereof, from our server and the management was a joke. The bus boy, horrified, apologized profusely and made a weak attempt to lighten the mood with some ill-timed humor. Meanwhile, our server's solution was to simply dump a pile of napkins on my mother and proceed like nothing happened. In this situation the first thing the bus boy or server should have done was inform management, who should have addressed the incident with my mother personally. Instead, my mother was forced to sit through dinner soaking wet with a pile of napkins beside her. My entire party was left in a state somewhere between dumbfounded and disbelief for the remainder of our meal. We finally said something to our server about it when our check was brought out, and eventually the manager came over, made a somewhat flippant apology, and comp'd my mother's meal. Besides the ice-water incident, I found the entrees middling in both quality of taste and presentation, did not care for the "communal" side salads, and was wholly unimpressed with our server's lack of attention (especially after being told/acknowledging our request for three checks and then, after lumping everything into one, shrugging and stating that they don't split checks for parties of our size. Why she didn't state that after we made multiple comments regarding who's food/drink was with which party I cannot understand. I ended up splitting it for her since she was so flustered by the end). I think the only redeeming quality was the space itself, which I thought (other than the tacky fake candle light) was beautifully decorated. Maybe Chicago has spoiled me but, drama-aside, I was underwhelmed by the whole experience. I believe the Dubuque/Galena area has other superior options in the same price range. We will not be going back. read more

Really good food and a nice atmosphere. The pizzas are a little pricey, but they are tasty - and they come up with some creative options to choose from. Very friendly waitstaff - she was even friendly to our boys, even when they started rearranging all of the pillows in the booth we were sitting in! Next time, I'll probably leave the kids at home when we come here, but they do have a kids menu (again, a little pricey for kids menu offerings). read more
