We witnessed a hit and run in the parking lot just as we arrived so we spent the first 30 minutes of our visit in the phone with police. Obviously I would never hold that against the store or let it affect their rating. However, when I went inside and explained to the greeter that a vehicle had been hit and asked if she wanted to check whether the victim was one of their employees, she said that employees typically don't park in that lot, customers do, and seemed very unconcerned. When I said I just wanted to let someone know in case the victim came inside and could she tell them that I called the police and gave them the person's license plate, the employee asked me if I wanted her to call a manager out. I was just really put off by that as this is the first point of contact for people entering the store and I just genuinely wanted to try and help. We did spend some time in the store and in the compound. I like that they have an entire section where you can customize products and gifts and have them embroidered. I haven't seen that before and I thought it was really neat. I didn't care for any of the products that they were offering at that time which qualified for the embroidery, but if that's something you're looking for, they offer it here. They also had dog items and the store is dog friendly. We brought our pup in with us but again she just didn't find any toys that were the right size or that she was interested in. The trip here was kind of a bust for us but I can see why some people might enjoy shopping here. We were told by another traveler that this is a great place to stop for deals, but I didn't see many of those either. There's a campus comprised of multiple buildings and that was a bit confusing. It also seems like it would be easier just to have everything under one roof, but that's just me personally. read more

LL Bean's flagship store is currently being rebuilt , but they do have the home store, fishing & hunting and large enclosed tent open during the renovations. The renovations are expected to be completed end of 2026. The stores have an extensive variety of L.L. Bean products. In the tent they did have discounted items. There was plenty of staff offering to assist with questions or to find an item. It's worth stopping in and seeing all the items they have to offer. read more

The first LL Bean building we came upon is their Bicycle specialty shop. With all the renovations LLBean is doing to create a bigger better campus of their brand, it was cool to see the different type of services, tune ups, bicycles for entry or experienced riders as well as the new electronic bikes. Definitely out of my price range for a casual biker, but if we were to actually get serious about it i would definitely consider finding one thru them. The staff was nice, one gentleman upstairs gave us a pamphlet and gave us a visual tour of what each building of theirs housed and specialized in. Being the first time down there, that was very helpful. Bathrooms are also located on the second floor. read more

Heads up: L.L. Bean's huge retail store is now under serious construction for at least another year and its products dispersed to half a dozen buildings scattered around central Freeport. It is no longer convenient in any way, requires a bit too much walking, and is missing a lot of the pleasure that came (to us, at least) with visiting the "big" store. We were really looking for some summer and fall items, which are now stashed under a very big tent labeled "Camp Bean." We found the tent's stock to be much smaller than expected, fewer choices in sizes, and a paucity of helpful clerks. Not to mention we had to do a lot of walking to find it. Other stores part of the Bean empire are a bit more accessible to pedestrians, but there's not much joy in so much walking around. There's still lots of parking for the crowds even with the summer season underway. But we found it easiest to park our car at the nearby Hilton Garden Inn where we stayed and then make a short stroll up to the stores. There's just so much that was a part of the big store that we didn't find on this trip. We were disappointed (as if you didn't already guess that from what we've written). But we also were distressed to learn the Jameson Tavern next door to Bean has recently closed. We used to enjoy a trip there for a cool drink and tasty food while taking a shopping break. No more. We'll be back here -- we remain fans of Bean -- but definitely not until construction is done. read more

I have bought LL Bean stuff for years but had never been to the main store in Maine. We were in that area and took advantage of it. the only negative is the parking... the place was slammed!! I had no idea that there would be several buildings to choose from... Home Items, Clothing, Toys, etc. We spent most of the time in the clothing area. There is so MUCH stuff in there and they had a wide variety of sizes... like tall options. The staff there were incredibly helpful... and there were a lot of them. Everyone wanted to help you find what you want. Bean stuff is expensive but I have coats and jackets that have lasted years and will last more as long as they are taken care of. I doubt I will be up that way again but if so i will try to have more time to look around. read more

Huge selection of anything you can think of. School backpacks, jackets, camping gear, just so much to look at. Prices are high, but the quality is really good. I have winter jackets that are 10 years old, and look brand new. Of course I take care of my things too, but the quality helps stand the test of time and washes. I am blown away with the customer service at L.L.Bean. I made a purchase online and needed to return and exchange twice to get the right fit (my fault, not theirs) and the process was seamless. The return was complicated because I wanted to buy another size and compare both items before I returned one. I originally paid a sale price and I wanted to keep that price. The sale was over, so I needed some help. Tom, the gentleman who helped me was extremely pleasant and there was absolutely no "answering ridiculous questions." He asked only a couple of things to verify my call and had all the rest of the info at his fingertips. Exactly the way it is supposed to work but never does at other sellers! I don't know, maybe it's because I'm a Maine kid, but LL Bean is a brand we've always had in our lives, has always been reliable, and that we trust. I grew up only using their backpacks for school; and, now, I only use their hiking backpacks/poles for my adventures into the woods. Do I own a pair of Bean Boots? I sure do! They're mens, though, because they don't make womens shoes wide enough for my enormous flat feet (seriously). The service here is - and is known for being - both friendly and out-of-their-way helpful (we recently spent an hour with an employee who helped us find the perfect chelsea boot for my partner). Visiting the flagship store is an adventure, and that's what this review is actually focused on. Because you should definitely visit... but during their seasonal programs (which, even as a local, I get excited for)! If you're visiting January through June, ignore this. But, if you're visiting: 1. In the summer: they have a huge line-up of things to do on their campus in the summer including free concerts (with well known bands), yoga in the park, art in the park, storytime for kiddos, interactive demos of their products, movie nights, and more. 2. In October: they partner with Camp Sunshine for a Pumpkin Festival and have literally THOUSANDS of jack-o-lanterns on display, live music, a kid's costume parade, etc. The date changes, but it's usually mid-October! 3. At the holidays: oooooooh, we love the LL Bean campus in December! Their Northern Lights (which I think usually runs mid-November to January 1st) event features thousands and thousands of twinkling lights, reindeer, the opportunity to meet Santa, free hot cocoa (though I wish they'd have non-dairy/plant-based options!), a model train, and winter activities (sometimes "ice skating"). We go several times during the month and just sit on the warming benches, looking at all the lights. It's lovely. So, I'm not an L.L. Bean person. Their clothes are not my aesthetic and I'm not much of an outdoors person so this was never really one of my brands. That being said, this particular LLB caught my eye - mainly because it's the mothership and I wanted to see how it compared to the smaller stores we have in NY. Since we were wandering around Freeport anyway, we decided to go inside and check it out. It's unfair to say that the flagship LLB store is just a store - it's actually a campus that stretches across a large area with separate stores for home, hunting/fishing, bike/boat/ski, and an outlet. We focused on the main store, which itself is huge - tons of selection spread across two floors. It's almost hard to wrap you head around how much there is; I spent a good 10 minutes in the tote bag section alone. I didn't end up purchasing anything this trip, however I did spend some time outside with the huge boot and backpack posing for photographs. Even though this isn't my brand, I would find it really hard to not find something here if you had intentions to purchase. After hauling all my friends from away here, I am pretty exhausted from doing the same thing over and over and waiting for my friends or family to look at freakin *everything* but, I think that's a testament to the majestic brilliance of the LL Bean store. They really do have almost everything. The hunting entrance is the best way to bring in guests, in my opinion. The 'Maine cabin' theme really does impress, with all the guns and mounted heads. Even though I sort of have to groan under my breath each time I bring people here, I do usually end up purchasing something. They really do make nice stuff, and obviously if you're an outdoors lover. Before I moved to Maine, I had maybe one item from LL Bean, but now I'm showing my 'current city' pride by amassing a bunch of clothes and accessories from them. Not just clothes, but they sell almost every hunting and camping accessory you can think of, and entire sections for men, women, and kids. I could not believe how massive, and how much merchandise was in these stores. It was unbelievable. I then stepped outside and directly across was the LL Bean Home Goods store which had some absolutely beautiful home furnishings.From there I then walked across from that store to the L.L. Bean bike, boat, and ski store. Thinking I was done I walked across the street, and seen the L.L. Bean outlet store. A total of five different L.L. Bean stores. If you love L.L. My mother would mail order my winter boot from L.L.Bean since 1964 and they were always comfortable and indestructible. I just was up in Freeport, Maine at the main store and I was a bit underwhelmed with the lack of selection, service and service staff . That said the Outlet store had its able and plentiful staff like always. Beans products are always top quality! The main store is pricey , the outlet is more reasonably priced. I bought my dog a life vest for the lake two years ago at $39.99 and lost it. This year the same vest was $59.99. Then I spent 40 minutes to find someone to ring it up. My credit card was charged and the representative admitted that they never sent them (no tracking number). But their allowable time to register a complaint had expired so they kept my money. The LL Bean flagship store is worth the trip. Well, at least from CT it is. I was there Black Friday and as expected it was very busy. But they had plenty of people working so it was manageable and the checkout lines moved pretty quickly. There's a separate store for home products so the campus is quite large. As I write this review they are undergoing significant renovations so it's a bit messier than normal. An employee told me that they wouldn't be completed until 2025. The small cafe they had downstairs is now closed, which is unfortunate because was pretty good. I'm told there will eventually be a bigger restaurant as part of the renovations. If you know LL Bean then you're familiar with the clothes they sell. Stuff isn't inexpensive but generally well made. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Bottom Line: Massive store selling clothing for the whole family, outdoor gear, stuff for dogs, home goods, luggage, bikes, hunting and fishing gear and plenty more. I expected the flagship L.L. Bean store to be big and impressive but wow, this place is massive! So massive that there is actually a map of the L.L. Bean campus which includes four to five buildings depending on how you count them. On the main site there is a building for clothing and other stuff which is connected to a building for hunting and fishing. Then there is a separate building for home décor and a separate building for bike, boat and ski gear. A block or so away there is a building that is the outlet. So yeah, lots to see and shop! And if you need a break, there is the 1912 Cafe and another Coffee House. I spent most of my time looking at luggage and women's clothing. It was so nice to shop the full collection of L.L.Bean gear and clothing. Everything was nicely organized and they seemed to have every size of every color. I am sure there are exceptions but I totally found what I was looking for which never seems to happen at any store. I also spent some time gawking at the fun displays. How could I not? I am their sunglasses. The protective/reflective coating on the glasses rubbed off from cleaning. I only used water and a soft cloth. I rarely used them due to it was a birthday present and used them on weekends. I tried to warranty them but it was just past the year mark and I would have to send them back on my postage and they couldn't guarantee it would be returned. So F it. If I saw a shirt I liked, either they didn't have my size or the pattern was off in my size. I didn't see too many sales folks except at the registers. Enough is enough, I found a beautiful sear sucker shirt and asked for the shirt in big daddy size. They found the shirt in the back and it fits perfectly. Huzza! The young man at the register looks up my account and gives me a military discount at the end of my transaction. He then stuffs it all into a bag and says deuces?? Ordered a big Xmas gift online in early December to have under the tree at my family's house. It was Well within the time frame to be there by Xmas. For some reason that no one in the company can explain, the order wasn't processed for a full WEEK and then sat around another full week before being shipped out!! So needless to say I was very embarrassed on Xmas morning in front of my family and the customer "service" people are offering a minuscule percent off as recompense for utter incompetence. If it weren't Xmas with a big presentation of the presents it wouldn't have been such a big deal but the fact that no one has ANY explanation for why it took 2 weeks from my order to the shipping and are just saying WHOOPS and taking no responsibility stinks.
