The duck and chicken dish were tasty, but came in second to the beef and pork. We had a plethora of desserts as well. We took our servers advice and ordered cheesecake, which was pretty good. I wish they had a chocolate molten lava cake as opposed to the warm brownie. The crème brûlée was a bit underwhelming (three lil scoops of crème on a plate); was expecting a bowl of goodness. We went to L'Escargot for a date night dinner on a Friday. L'Escargot has a super cute patio with heaters for outdoor seating, and the overall ambience and service was incredible and great for a romantic date night! Most the dishes we got were really amazing! Would really recommend goat cheese tart, onion soup, scallops & risotto, and apple tart for dessert. Appetizer: goat cheese tart & escargots & onion soup -cheese tart (5/5) Incredibly crusty tart was baked to perfection, and the goat cheese was incredibly melty. The caramelized onion was also delicious with a hint of sweetness that hits the spot. -escargots (3.5/5) Escargots are a bit bland in my opinion and it's probably one of the few dishes that wasn't so impressive. Good to try it if you haven't tried it before but not the best I've had. -onion soup (5/5) Incredible onion soup with gooey and caramelized cheese on top. Seasoning in the onion soup wasn't super strong so the cheese really complements the flavor well. Service was exceptional! We went on a busy Saturday night. We made reservations on the same day (unsuccessful at a few other places first). Nice area for outdoor seating. We ordered a couple dishes we don't normally have such as frog legs and l'escargot. Food was good. My favorite was their French onion soup. L'Escargot was the highlight of our Carmel weekend! It was our first fine dining experience during Covid and everything was perfect. We had a reservation for 7pm but were starving by 5pm and the restaurant accommodated us at 5:15pm. For Covid, there is only outdoor dining available. They have heat lamps and tables set up outside in front of the restaurant. There is plenty of room and the area fits about 8 tables. The ambiance is nice as the sun sets and heat lamps are very thoughtful as it gets a little chilly in the evening in Carmel. We ordered escargot and frog legs for appetizers. Both were very good and we even contemplated ordering a second platter of escargot. I personally liked the escargot better but my boyfriend loved both dishes. I ordered a glass of Sauvignon Blanc and it was a very generous pour. Even the bread that this restaurant serves is amazing. It's served straight out of the oven and is both soft on the inside and crispy on the outside. For mains we ordered the diver scallops with asparagus risotto and the duckling. Both were amazing. The duck had a bit of crisp to the outside and was very flavorful. The duck breast could have been a little more tender, but that is my only complaint from the whole meal. The scallops were cooked perfectly and were very large. I'm not usually a fan of risotto but it was surprisingly good. Light flavor and complemented the scallops well. For dessert we ordered the brownie with vanilla ice cream- you can't go wrong with that. The brownie was a lava brownie which made it even better. Came here early on a sunday night. My girlfriend and i were the first ones to be seated that night but the host/waiter was incredible, didnt rush us at all and let us enjoy slowly. The appetizers were our favorite part of the meal, enjoying the escargot with mushroom caps and the french onion soup, both incredibly tasty. Mains were beef wellington and lobster risotto. To start off this review, I'd point out how wonderful their service is. Victor was absolutely delightful, and was very attentive and full of fun facts about the history of the restaurant. The staff was all friendly, so I would guess that they are likely treated well here. We tried the escargot, (naturally a must here), and the king scallop special. The escargot was absolutely delicious; classically prepared and beautifully presented. The king scallops were well balanced between the perfectly cooked risotto, asparagus, and herbs. The pepitas were a surprise, but a very welcome addition to the dish. Of course, the scallions themselves were immaculately seared. Their patio space is gorgeous, so I would recommend dining outside, (there are heaters available) though their indoor space is well decorated and cozy, if you prefer to dine inside. We tried getting a table at Grasing's like a couple of boobs thinking it wouldn't be so crowded at 6pm on a weekday. Wrooong. We wandered around Googling other restaurants nearby and came across L'Escargot. Located on a residential street, as many shops in Carmel are, L'Escargot is a small, charming little place with bushes of lavender and rosemary decorating the front. Of course, we didn't have a reservation but Sean, the host and server for the night, was very accommodating and seated us in a corner table. We ordered: - Frog Legs Provence Style ($15.95): garlic herb sauce with lemon, comes with extra lemon which was unnecessary; the sauce was a little sour for my taste. The legs were tender and tasty. - French onion soup ($11.95 per): came with loads of cheese on top and boiling hot, beware. The soup was slightly salty for me though the cheese and baguette toned it down a little. Small looking bowl, big hearty portion. - Beef Wellington ($51.95): beautifully made into an individual pocket and only comes in medium rare. It was my first time trying Wellington and I was pretty surprised with how flavorful it was. The mushroom duxelle really came through without overpowering the beef. - Duckling 2 ways ($34.95): the confit leg and thigh wasn't dry at all, with the meat falling off the bone. The duck breast was my favorite with crisped skin on top of juicy meat. I think medium is the rarest I can go for duck. The dish came with roasted potatoes, steamed veggies, and demi glace. We also had a bottle of the 2015 Domaine Drouhin from Dundee Hills, Wilamette Valley, Oregon, which was absolutely delicious. Sean was very nice and informative throughout the night, although given he was basically the only server for the entire restaurant, it did take a while for him to come back for things. L'Escargot is one of the older, classic ones slightly isolated from busy Ocean Ave. We came here for dinner to sample their specialty of course, escargots! The escargots were offered two ways: classic in-the-shell or stuffed inside mushroom caps. They no longer offer the puff pastry version unfortunately. The snails were a slight letdown - very mild in flavor and you may need to sprinkle a bit of salt to enhance the flavor (3 stars). The rest of our dinner was awesome. My wife's Dover Sole was a simple preparation - a light egg-washed crust, nice tartness from the lemon-butter sauce, and some extra crunch from the sunflower seeds (4 stars). My Beef Wellington was excellent - cooked exactly as described in Wikipedia. 6-oz filet mignon cooked medium rare, then stuffed inside a flaky pastry shell with mushroom duxelle and foie gras blended in. I believe this is a very hard dish to make and they nailed it here. I cut the Wellington in half immediately to stop the cooking to preserve that medium rare beef! Juicy, perfectly seasoned, and tender. (5 stars). We ended the meal with a perfect dessert. Their flourless dark chocolate cake had truffle and Grand Marnier baked into it so you get several nice flavors melded together. Unlike yesterday's dinner at Portabella, the raspberries used in the garnish were fresher (5 stars). Highly recommend getting the Beef Wellington here. This places is a ! From the time I walked in to the time I was ready to go, the service was superb. The ambiance is welcoming, warm, and cozy. The waiter had the perfect amount of attentiveness. He knew the menu and described the specials with clarity and fidelity. He was not imposing and patronizing. He was a Goldilocks! The food was delicious, unassuming, and bursts with complimenting flavors. As an appetizer, I had their caramelized onions and goat cheese tart with mixed greens with balsamic glaze. And it was the right amount of cheese and onions. Simple flavors but leaves a mark in your tastes buds. My main course was Pan seared scallops over creamy risotto. Each bite is a perfect combination of variety of textures. One can simultaneously, taste the pan fried capers ever so subtle, a hint of lemon coupled with some lightly toasted pumpkin seeds, and perfectly cooked scallop, gives you a that ensemble of texture and flavor! Another great meal at L'Escargot even through intermittant power outages! My wife and I shared a very pleasant anniversary dinner a few days ago and everything we ordered was first rate. I would particularly like to highlight the bouillabaisse. In most restaurants you get a scoop or two out of a big pot which generally means some of the more delicate fish is over done but Chef Kerry makes each serving individually which means he can prepare each ingredient at their individual optimal cooking times: the swordfish, ling cod, seabass, prawns, mussels and clams are all perfectly cooked in the luscious tomato garlic saffron broth. Had both of their escargot dishes , frog legs, and both their soups. We had high hope for this place based on the reviews and photos we saw on Yelp, but our dining experience there didn't quite match the expectation s. This restaurant does have a lovely garden-like entrance, the interior decor and ambience were good too, but when it comes to the most important component of a restaurant, the food, this place wasn't on par. We ordered quite a few of their signature dishes and they were all disappointing. - Frog legs: very blend, no flavor whatsoever, I had to keep adding salt and pepper in it. - Same for the classic escargot: the chef must've forgotten to add salt?? - Duck prepared two ways: confit leg and thigh were delicious, but the pan roasted breast portion wasn't done well. We weren't asked how the breast should be prepared and it came as medium rare, you could see blood in them. We didn't want to cause any inconvenience, now that I think about it we should've sent it back! - Most outrages was this "special dish" Beef Wellington we were nightly encouraged by our server to order. It wasn't on the menu so we just assumed the price was more or less like other main entrees on the menu, what a mistake! We should've asked the server (and IMO he should've disclosed pricing info when he made the recommendation), then we would've been prepared to shell out $59 for this light-portioned dish. This is a charming restaurant and the ambiance inside is intimate and cozy. My wife and I ordered two appetizers and shared the duck entree, cooked two ways. The pâté was underwhelming, coarse and without any flavor. The roasted duck breast was okay and the confit was on the dry side. I had been wanting to dine at L'Escargot for years. And since my wife and I were celebrating our 10 year wedding anniversary last Saturday, L'Escargot seemed like the perfect place. L'Escargot is a tiny place tucked away in a residential neighborhood away from the main drag9Ocean Ave.) of Carmel-by-the Sea. I think that is always why it intrigued me. Like all restaurants, they have moved their operation outdoors due to COVID. We had a 7:30 reservation, but arrived a bit early after a stroll though town. We couldn't be seated right away because the 7 p.m. people needed to be seated which was fine with us. We were eventually seated by Sean who was also our server. He went over the menu with us and let us know about the various additions to the menu that evening. One of which was diver scallops served with a lemon risotto. Sean took our drink order while we contemplated what we were going to have for dinner. The Mrs. and I decided to start things off by sharing Escargot. After all, you can't dine at L'Escargot without having Escargot, bon? I suggest having them the traditional way in the shell served with parsley garlic butter. We also shared the French Onion Gratinee(soup). I've had a lot of French Onion soup in my time and L'Escargot's was THE BEST. For our main dish, the Mrs. and I both ordered the diver scallops with lemon risotto. To me, scallops and risotto go together like peas and carrots. The scallops were cooked perfectly and the risotto was creamy and lemony, but the lemon wasn't over powering. Since L'Escargot is in a residential neighborhood, parking can be an issue. We were fortunate to find a spot literally right in front of the restaurant. Also, as with most of the sidewalks in Carmel-by-the-Sea, they are uneven. So ladies, gentlemen, and seniors, be careful when you are walking. L'Escargot is dog friendly. Several of man's best friends were dining with their owners. I'm all for dog friendly spaces, but the patio are at L'Escargot is so small the dogs are almost a hazard. Making a reservation was pretty easy. I booked over a month in advance because I knew a table at L'Escargot would be at a premium. You can only book a reservation over the phone. If you do decide to book a reservation and dine at L'Escargot, all I ask is please, show up for your reservation. If you can't make it, let the restaurant know ahead of time. Under the current circumstances we are in with COVID, every penny counts and if you blow off your reservation, not only is it tacky, but the restaurant and staff are losing money on a table that YOU booked. read more

Kind of surprising actually. Menus presented -- including wine list. We ordered a bottle and then picked from the menu. One lamb main and starter, two local sand dabs. Look, everything was fine -/ the dabs were boned and fresh but paper thin and breaded so they were very dry. Lamb reported to be ok a little heavy with the dressing. We dined at L'Escargot last night for my 72nd birthday. There were five of us, ranging in age from 7 to 72. The food was amazing, all excellent. We had the sweetbreads, the mushrooms stuffed with escargot, the white bean soup, the duck entree, the rack of lamb entree, the sand dabs, the Halibut special, and the pork medallions--each one was delicious and cooked to perfection. This place is a hidden gem. Literally! It is tucked away within a non-descript cottage on a quiet street. In Carmel, it is apparently illegal to have a sign larger than 4" x 6", so if you aren't careful, you'll stroll/drive right by, and you'd be poorer for it (experientially, of course - not financially). L'Escargot was our first dinner in Carmel, and the most memorable evening by far. It was also one of the coldest, for L'Escargot resides in a charming, vintage French country house. Exposed beams and bare white walls ooze charm and dispense with pretense, but also insulation. It was an unusually chilly and rainy evening, and quite drafty. On such nights, a sweater may be in order. Fortunately, the food and hospitality warmed us right up. I started with a rye Manhattan and it was excellent. A local rye, Fog's End. Excellent in a Manhattan, and, as I discovered when indulging in a digestif, on a rock. The food here is something else - exquisite. Perhaps the finest French food I've had this side of the Atlantic, aside from St. Martin. For appetizers, I had the frog legs and Kelly had the French Onion soup. The frog legs, Provencal style, were tenderly chewy and delicious. Kelly loved the French Onion soup and I concurred - the broth was a unique and earthy mix of veal, beef, and chicken stock. For dinner, Kelly had the special, Beef Wellington; tender beef with duxelle mushroom sauce and foie gras. It was a delicious, savory medium rare. I indulged in the duck - two ways, with a crispy duck leg and thigh and a delicious seared duck breast. It was superb, some of the best duck I have ever had. Really top notch, up there with the duck in St Martin. Just thinking about it now, I am getting so hungry for it. For wine, we had a local cabernet franc, from Boete. It was delicious, so Old World and earthy, and enhanced all of our courses. I recommend getting the bottle and visiting the tasting room, just 15 minutes east of town. We arrived at 7 PM and when we left, at 9:30, we were the last ones there. Evenings end quickly at Carmel, but we enjoyed having the room to ourselves. Our server Jeremy was most entertaining and helpful, and we enjoyed learning more about the region from him. If I were fortunate enough to live in Carmel, I would eat here monthly, if not more frequently. Highly recommended. read more

The ambiance of L'Escargot was exactly what we were looking for on a relaxing Sunday night. We were not rushed to make any decisions and the timing of bringing out the order was impeccable. We had the French onion soup, scallops, steak frite and cheesecake. Hands down, the best French onion soup I've ever had. The cheesecake was also stellar. The one negative (if there is one) is that the steak was a bit tough. Regardless, the taste was excellent, and the fries were out of this world. Not only is the food fabulous and authentically French (but not the least bit "heavy"), the space itself is throughly charming, right out of the French countryside, and the service is impeccable. And I had the Dover sole meunière, also fantastic, and so fresh. This is the oldest restaurant in Carmel, and has had only two owners, both of them the chef in charge. Tucked away in one of the quieter streets of Carmel, this quaint French restaurants has the perfect ambience to match it's fantastic cuisine. It fulfilled all my expectations of French cuisine without any of the unnecessary pomp typically associated with these type of restaurants. It was a realistic high-level cuisine with amazing flavors that anyone could get behind and enjoy. For appetizers, we had the mushroom escargot and the veal sweetbread. The sweetbread was hands down the winning dish for me that night. The flavors were extremely complex, the breads was perfectly flaky, and the sauces were amazing. The mushroom escargot was very well-seasoned but I think I could've done without. For the entrée, we had the beef Wellington, the sea bass, and duck in 2 ways. The Wellington was full of flavor and the proportion of the layers was just right. The mushrooms with truffle was so flavorful and the puff pastry was cooked perfectly--it stayed flaky and intact the entire meal. Make sure you cut open the Wellington right when it arrives so The cooking process stops and you have a perfect medium rare. The duckling prepared two ways really showcases the duck into very different flavor pallets. The pan roasted breast had a steak-like texture and a smart choice of seasoning while the confit leg and thigh tasted very tender and natural which highlighted the natural flavors of the meat. The two ways well complemented each other and the sauce tied them together very well. The Seabass for me was cooked beautifully and the side vegetables was extremely tasty. Definitely worthwhile to try. For desserts we had the flourless chocolate ganache cake. It was not too sweet and I thought it was the perfect way to end a very great meal. If you ever get a chance, I definitely recommend that you try L'escargot! It was every bit worth the price and I had an amazing time eating with my family.
