Well, actually, tasting the warmth of fresh falafel and schwarma with spicy schug is. The two go together! Before our trip to Paris, Jim G. and I asked tons of people who had been where we should go. Nearly everyone said that we had to go here. So we did. Twice! Many of the falafel places in the Jewish Quarter have guys outside welcoming you/pressuring you (depending on who) to try their place. That is because they know that, if armed with info, everyone wants to go to L'As du Falafel. The place itself is unassuming: full of tables, wonderful aromas, and lots of noise! With the falfel and schwarma plates comes warm pita, hummus, babaganoush, tomato/cucumber salad, and, on the table both red and green schug. The lemonade is also quite tasty. It's hard to quantify why this place is so good, but it is. The food is fresh, flavorful, and relatively inexpensive. Most falafel is dry, not here! Husband and I were strolling the Marais, when we stumbled upon this place. Why did we notice? There was a ridiculous long line and it was the only place that had such a line. We considered standing in the line to get it to go (which was shorter), but there was no where to sit & eat nearby (you'd have to walk a few blocks). Over a year later, we came back and made it our mission to try and get there before the crowds and we pulled it off. We arrived on a Thursday around lunch time with a party of 4. When we arrived, there were only 2 small groups in front of us in line. The line moved fast and we were taken to a table inside. The servers are use to the crowds and are efficient & fast. We ordered Maccabee beers and the "special falafels." Although served on plastic plates, was it worth it? ABSOLUTELY. So tasty & for a great price! I have never tried such an amazing falafel in my entire life. I went there on a Sunday around noon. The queue was long but the moment I arrived with my friend, the worker asked if we would like to sit. The service was extremely fast. We sat down and we already knew from the Yelp reviews to order the falafel and shawarma. I am not exaggerating about the quick service. After we ordered, I took my coat off, I got my phone out to take the photo of the table and our food arrived. It was that quick. I ordered the homemade lemonade and it was great. The lemonade had a pinch of sweetness. The falafel though... What was I doing eating all them other falafels than from this place? The moment I started to chew my first bite of the falafel, my surrounding melted away and I swear the heavens opened up. My friend and I are talkative combo but when we started to eat our food, we were dead silent. And that rarely happens. Only after eating did I notice the framed photos of Lenny Kravitz beaming down at me from the walls. The pita bread was so soft, the falafel was fantastic, the veggies and the sauce were just hnnng. To be able to try out both the falafel and shawarma, me and my friend ate half of each and swapped. I liked the shoarma but I felt like it was nothing compared to the falafel. I was contemplating getting my second round of falafel even though I was completely stuffed (I could feel my skinny jeans cutting off my blood circulation). Popular places like this are hyped up so much they usually let me down. My wife and I came here for dinner our first night in Paris. It was about 9pm and there were two lines, both for the same thing. When we walked up there were people with radios trying to talk to us. I didn't realized they worked there so I ignored them. My wife realized they were trying to take our orders to make things go faster. We both ordered the original falafel and a drink, and the guy marked it on the ticket and took our money. We then got in line with our ticket. The line moved quickly and when we got to the counter we handed the guy putting together the falafels our ticket. He then asked if we wanted it "piquant", which for future reference we will know means spicy in French. We got our falafels and sat on a ledge at a closed store and ate! The falafel, coleslaw stuff, eggplant, sauce, and pita combination came together beautifully. I really enjoyed the eggplant addition which I feel like I usually don't see. Had to come a couple of times. Good cheap eats and fuel for shopping around Le Marais! I was lucky to dodge the lines. Seemed like once I ordered, a marching band of people would come out of no where to line up behind me! Timing is everything. Chicken schwarma: Full of crunchy veggies and topped with refreshing yogurt sauce. Smaller than I imagined though, don't try and share (you won't want to). Lamb plate: flavorful thin cuts of meat and all the fillings of the pita sandwiches on a plate. Nice big plate of food but my preference is the sandwich. Falafels: I'm usually all about meat but they're well known for their falafels and you can easily enjoy the side of 10. They're just the right size to pop into your mouth. And not because it's a place to get some protein between meals consisting of baguettes, but because it's the BEST. Okay then, I'm willing to give it a shot! I came here for lunch with my husband after touring Notre Dame. All of the sudden we were walking down cute winding roads and found ourselves taken back in time...and amongst a whole bunch of falafel joints. The competition is real here. Find the longest line and get in it, that's L'As du Fallafel, guaranteed. We opted to eat inside, and waited less than 10 minutes for a table. We ordered our falafel sandwiches (fellow vegans, take note - you don't have to ask them to remove anything, the falafel sandwich is totally vegan, sauces and all!), a side of frites, and their homemade lemonade. It's a huge order of fries, so be prepared to share and probably leave a bunch behind. The falafel sandwiches were to die for. Did I mention I don't even like falafel? The sandwich was out of this word delicious. The falafels were crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside, and perfectly tender. This place is the best especially if you want something different and much cheaper. Prior to my time in France, I never tasted a falafel or anything in a pita. Now I'm addicted. Having been to Israel and being from NY i have had my fair share of both shawarma and falafal, this spot is one of the best I have had. The area is a little bit hectic with people trying to convince you try their restaurant, but we came here on a mission to eat at this spot specifically so all that didn't matter. You can either dine in or the guy at the door takes your order and you pick it up at their outside window. We opted to dine out. Wow.. I feel bad for leaving anything less than five/four stars. It seems like everyone loves this place.. except for my family and me. I planned our three day trip to Paris. L'As du Fallafel was one of the most talked about food stops I've encountered. So naturally, we had to give it a try. The line was long on a summer afternoon, but the wait was about 15-20 minutes. I'm sorry - but after our first bite, we had no idea what the fuss was all about. These fallafels were just deep fried vegetable balls ladled with white and red sauce and tucked into a bread pocket. There is a to go line and an area for dine in. I don't know if they charge differently, but given my experience at other Parisian places, I would say it does. They do not allow you to dine in after ordering to go. It's hidden in a little alleyway in the Latin Quarter. The area is a nice place to wander so give yourself some time before or after to do so. So.. back to the food. Maybe I am not one to even judge fallafels. However, as a foodie, I feel that it is my duty to report to other foodies that this was personally something that I wouldn't mind missing while in Paris. It was perfectly seasoned, cooked to perfect tenderness, the portions are large, the staff is very nice and accomodating, and the environment is really nice. Not sure it can get better than this...except perhaps if there were a few places to sit outside. Still, its part of the charm...the inevitable walking around trying to find a place to sit after you receive your pita of goodness. Sit inside if you like, but I love walking down the side streets seeing people in various stages of trying to eat the gigantic falafel sandwich while remaining mobile. You do get a fork to make your task easier, but its a labor of love to eat this. The falafel sandwich is made special by the addition of eggplant and if you tend to like it spicy, get the hot sauce. Very fresh vegetables, a great sauce and delicious falafel. Folks there are very busy and rushed but very nice. English and a variety of other languages are spoken here. Great flavors, a real scene when you order, and the quick arrival of one of the best falafel you'll ever eat, anywhere. While in Paris, my husband and I were determined to eat at this place after hearing so much about it. And it did not disappoint! I'm not a huge falafel person, but here, it really lived up to the hype. My husband got the shawarma, after the guy told him to because "you're a big guy." Haha! If you come to Paris...of course you have to try this place. I've heard about it from anyone I talked to that either lives in Paris or had visited Paris. They claim it is the best falafel that you will ever have so obviously I was going to go try it. Since I've been in paris (7 weeks) I've been here 5 times..not bad. The line to get take-out is always kinda long and the line to go sit inside is average (sometimes there isnt a wait if you come at an odd time). The take-away prices are cheaper than eating in. A falafel wrap is €5.50 and it comes in a thick pita with 6-7 (?) pieces of falafel, eggplant, shredded red cabbage, white sauce, and a spicy sauce. The falafel here IS really really good BUT for some reason when all those things are combined together, everything kinda just gets soggy and salty. None the less, it is delicious especially with that eggplant! The only thing is is that I feel they might be a little inconsistent with the number of falafel they are putting in each order. I swear one time I got it and I got 9 pieces of falafel and then another time I got 6. Thats a big difference!! Also one time I came to eat in and me and a friend shared the falafel platter which comes with everything thats in the wrap but just on a plate PLUS hummus. It was sooo delicious. rue Des Rosiers is a destination of its own in Paris, and one of my favorite during my stay. You're not bound to find a more vibrant and exposed Jewish community anywhere else outside of Paris (except for Israel). The central part of this street seems to be L'As du Fallafel, with a constant line for take-out falafel and employees shouting, in typical Jewish custom, to get more customers. When ordering, they are astonishingly fast. From the time I gave him my slip to the time my falafel was in my hands, no more than 20 seconds had passed. For them, it's good because they can get through customers very quickly. For those who are new and can be picky (such as me), it's a bit disappointing. I can't do cabbage, so by the time I was up to order, my pita was already stuffed with it. Eventually I just let it go and gave the cabbage layer to my dad. Now, the falafels themselves are fricking amazing. Crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside; just how they should be. The cucumbers are great, and so is their special sauce. I wish they would give some hummus and tahini sauce, but I can live without them. I'd have to say I've had better falafel in the U.S. and definitely in Israel, but this place tops my list for sure. read more

Though L'As du Falafel is the mecca for falafels in Paris, I'll have to say that I'm going to throw a cat amongst the pigeons. I have been eating at L'As du Falafel since 2006, and one thing is for sure.. the quality has gone downhill. Though I have to give it to them for being able to queue up a line 30 people deep, and their efficiency, this review speaks of the food and environment. The last time I sat down in the restaurant to eat, I kid you not, I saw a mouse scurrying around the restaurant floor. True this might be common in a lot of restaurants, but not something you want to see while digging into your falafel. The last time I brought some friends there, all three friends got horribly sick that night. I was the only one without stomach pains; perhaps the extra chili sauce on my falafel helped kill off whatever was making them sick. Wow. I'm ordering Jewish cuisine in Paris, France. This is my sister's favourite place for a quick, simple, and affordable meal. I ordered fallafel Special which is a vegetarian wrap. The wrap is huge and it's packed with chopped up vegetables and falafel balls and it's covered with a North American style salad type of sauce. So, I tried my first bite, wow, it's packed with flavour. Well, the ranch salad type of sauce really brings out the flavour and the vegetables and falafel balls brings out even more enjoyment to the mouth. There are two locations along this cute alley/street with sit down and a little outside take-away kitchen to help the lines. I'd suggest to use Euros as it'll be faster than using your card. My sandwich was still great, not as good I imagine as the fallafel but good. It was easy to eat while walking with a fork then eating the whole sandwich once it was a bit emptier; perfect on the go snack/meal. Overrated. Food lacks flavor. Not worth the high price. Service is rude and rushed.

The pitas were great!! Though, they said the shawarma was a combination of lamb and turkey, I did not taste any lamb. I'm also having a hard time in Paris trying to find a good gyro with just lamb. I had just ordered a petit gelato from Amorino when a few friends asked if I wanted to join them in finding this famous falafel place! I quickly ate the rest of the gelato and by the time we walked over I was too excited to resist (and my mouth was watering from the overwhelmingly delicious aromas of the street). My friend and I split the falafel special, which is pita stuffed to the brim with their veggies, falafels, tomatoes, lettuce, and delicious grilled eggplant all topped with a great tahini sauce. It cost 6 euros, but was perfect to split between 2 people as a decent snack portion. There are 2 lines going into the restaurant. One line is for sitting in and the other is for a to-go option. The line goes by really quickly and of course the food is well worth the wait. When we ordered the gentleman taking our orders told us to go directly inside and get our food (like a Disneyland fast pass!!). I would highly recommend this place because it is a great change of pace from the typical crepes or baguettes that I've been having all week. I definitely will be returning a few times during the rest of my stay and am looking forward to trying their shawarma and fries! read more

WOW, just wow. Hands down the best falafel sandwich I've ever had. And coming from NYC, I've tried quite a few. I think the genius comes from how they layer the ingredients into the pita alternating and repeating ingredients as they go, making a balanced flavor profile and HUGE pita! A good warning: all falafel places everywhere have some secret hell-ish hot sauce recipe, so make sure you only ask for a little bit, or else you'll be teary-eyed and full of regret within seconds..I've seen it happen to countless tourists. This is a classic example of how even though every copycat falafel place on the street claims on their sign that they're the 'best in the world'....you should always believe the one with the massive line.
