I went into my engagement with high hopes, based mostly on the quality of their website and some of…read morethe YouTube videos I watched of the installs. Ordering from the website was easy and clear. That's about the only positive thing I can say: 1. The delivery process was completely opaque. I tried calling the numbers on the emails I received to get a delivery date. First I went to someone's voicemail. The second number was no longer in service. Then some guy, who'd apparently been monitoring the voicemail, called and told me he'd get right back to me about a delivery date. He also told me that the delivery company would call me the day before, and if I didn't answer or couldn't be there for the delivery, they would cancel everything. That's the last I heard from anyone. 2. Weeks later, I tried emailing their customer service again and got Autumn Scoggins of Catalina Home Customer Support (apparently the distributor of SmartTurf), who told me she'd track down my order. I didn't hear back from here, but did get an all from the delivery company saying they'd be there the next day. Well, okay. 3. The delivery driver showed up in a full-sized semi and refused to try to get it to my driveway. We had to tug the 300 lb roll of turf out of the truck by hand and then drag it a half block to my home. Then return to the truck and load all the infill and Air Drain tiles into my car for transport. 4. On unrolling the turf, we discovered that it was sliced completely across the roll in one place -- not completely but we couldn't install it that way. We had to purchase a patch kit and repair the cut prior to install. Also, 2 of the Air Drain tiles we so damaged they were not usable. I reached out again to Autumn at Catalina, who appeared very concerned and said she'd work with the company to see about a partial refund. A month later, Autumn hasn't returned emails. Since replacing the turf would have been a complete nightmare, we decided to patch the defective roll and install it anyway. The product seems pretty good -- but I don't think we'll ever do business with Smart Turf or Catalina Home again. Ghosted by Catalina and SmartTurf.

I paid $5,000 in 2014 for fake grass in my backyard. Even though I had a dog, that turf never…read moresmelled and never suffered damage from hot spots. Fast forward to 2026. I paid more money to Ruff n Tuff for new turf than I did for all new interior paint throughout my entire house, all new windows, and an all new roof. This was by far the most expensive home improvement project I've invested in to date. About 60% of the way through the multi day install, they told me the neighbor's low e window was melting the new turf in streaks in one portion of my yard. They didn't offer a solution other than advising me to ask the neighbor to put a film on his window or to keep the turf covered to prevent the damage. At that point I had no choice but to proceed with the rest of the install; they had already ripped up the old turf and were more than half way done installing the new turf, but I was very disappointed because I obviously would not have chosen that product if I had known there would be an issue. I felt like I was being gaslit too, because Bob basically told me the reason the old turf didn't melt was because it was poorer quality. (What!?) I have samples of the old turf from its day 1 install. It was fluffy and beautiful 12 years ago, just like the Ruff N Tuff turf, but it never melted! They replaced the grass in the area where it had melted, finished the job, and I paid them the full amount thinking I could manage the situation by keeping the area covered. Unfortunately, despite my best efforts (I placed several lawn chairs over the area in question to ensure it remained covered), there are now several spots in that area where the turf has completely melted. I'm beyond disappointed because I know from experience now that not all turf products are the same and this could have been prevented. We could have designed around that area, or I could have researched and purchased a superior product, but I expected the experts to know what to look for and guide me through the process. They didn't, and now I have very expensive melted grass in a section of my yard. Also, the area behind my house where my dog pees now smells. I hose it daily, but it doesn't help. I didn't have that problem with the prior turf. All I can say is I'm not sure you get what you pay for with this product. The installers were fantastic, but I'd recommend a different product. I see a lot of people post reviews right after install; however, I purposefully waited to post my…read morereview to see how the product/installation held up with the test of time, as this is a big investment... I purchased my home in Escondido, CA in early 2022 and started exploring backyard renovation options shortly after. By September 2022, I chose to move forward with Ruff N Tuff Turf after being told that my backyard would be featured in their marketing materials and that I'd receive a discounted rate because of this. Unfortunately, I now believe this was just a sales tactic. From the beginning, there were red flags. The salesperson, Anthony, provided a very rough, unprofessional mockup (see attached image), and the design did not accurately reflect my backyard's measurements or layout. The layout boxes didn't align with the space, which likely led to incorrect ordering... too much paver material (I still have a significant surplus far beyond the 10% overage I was told to expect) and not enough turf. The shortfall in turf meant they had to install it in multiple sections with seams, despite me being promised a seamless look during the sales pitch. Fast forward to now, nearly three years later, and I've been dealing with an ongoing issue of weeds growing through the turf, not just around the edges, but directly through the middle (see attached photos). I contacted Ruff N Tuff Turf and was told this was not their responsibility and was purely a maintenance issue on my end and to use Roundup 365. However, several other landscaping professionals I've since consulted confirmed that properly installed artificial turf should not allow weeds to grow through like this. Surface weeds can happen, but penetration through the turf indicates a deeper problem with installation or materials. For transparency, I paid $31,343 for: 860 sq ft of Soft Touch Pro-Natural Series 1000 turf (envirofill, zeolite, and 15 LF premium poly board) 449 sq ft of courtyard pavers (including polymeric sand) 286 sq ft of 3/8 rock 3 stump removals On a positive note, the turf has held its color, doesn't retain pet odors, stays cooler than other turf I've experienced, and does look fairly realistic (though now, the weeds probably make it look too realistic). Overall, my experience with Ruff N Tuff Turf was disappointing, from the misleading sales approach, to poor planning, to subpar installation, and the lack of professionalism/accountability after the fact. I would recommend doing thorough research and getting multiple professional opinions before moving forward with this company.
