Today's experience was highlighted by warm and enthusiastic greetings by Nick and the rest of the team. Nick, especially, interacted with my kids in a way that felt like this hobby was intended for kids again. I really appreciated the time he took to look through my kids' binders and commenting on every page and the cards they had. They also hooked them up with freebies. There needs to more Nicks in these card shops as it really makes it fun for the kiddos. We ended up picking up a Morpeko and Maushold IRs from 30th and he generously gave us a good deal on them.

I stopped by Collectors Lounge on September 27, 2026, to see what they would offer for some…read morePSA-graded Pokémon cards. I've been here a few times before and thought the place was pretty cool, but this visit definitely changed my opinion. One of the employees, a Hispanic guy with long hair, told me that anything graded below a PSA 10 is basically valued at raw-card prices. I honestly thought he was joking. So apparently a PSA 9, PSA 8, PSA 7, etc. magically forgets that it was authenticated, graded, and slabbed unless there's a giant "10" on the label. At that point, Collectors Lounge might as well change the name to "Raw Prices Lounge -- Slabs Accepted, Grades Ignored." I brought in a 1st Edition Light Dragonite PSA 7 with comps around $1,100. Instead of looking at PSA 7 sales, they were looking at raw prices around $620 and offered me about $400. Of course I declined. I understand card shops need room to make money. I'm not walking in expecting 100% market value and a complimentary foot massage. But buying a graded card based on raw pricing and then being able to resell it as a graded card sounds like a fantastic deal... just not for the collector. Then there was Edgar. I was working out a deal with another employee, and the employee and I actually came to what I felt was a fair number. It was even slightly below the 70% they supposedly offer, and I was willing to work with him because I had already done another deal with him earlier. Then Edgar jumped into the conversation like a surprise DLC nobody purchased. Nobody asked for his opinion, but suddenly he was telling us the card was "going down in value" while the employee and I were literally looking at the sales chart right in front of us. My guy... the chart is right there. We both have eyes. The employee and I had already worked through the numbers and found something reasonable. There really wasn't a need for a guest referee to enter the match. I understand shops have overhead and need to buy below market. That's completely normal. What doesn't sit right with me is treating professionally graded vintage cards like raw cards whenever it makes the offer cheaper. I came in expecting Collectors Lounge. I left feeling like I visited Raw Prices Lounge: Where Your Slab Is Decorative Until It Says PSA 10. Collectors, do yourself a favor: check recent sold listings, know your comps, and know what your graded cards are actually worth before walking in.
