The food was pretty good. And they were very attentive. My main gripe is probably what's happened at other restaurants in Italy but tonight it was irrefutable. We ask for water every time we eat. Always we say "still" or "concrete" which means not sparkling. I would be good with tap water but when in Rome as they say. Tonight they filled all our glasses up with water and left a new 2nd bottle for us. Never happened before but ok. When we poured the 2nd bottle I realized it said Frizzee which means sparkling. The water was not sparkling and we opened it, not the waiter. I confronted him and said that has to be tap water we were charged for. He was adamant that the bottle was mislabeled. Yeah right. We opened it up. This is one of the small ways they try to cheat you. Just messed up the whole experience because I no longer trust them. read more

The food and service were amazing. They brought a complimentary appetizer and kept the drinks flowing. I was so happy they allowed us to put a tip on our credit card. Nowhere else in Italy have we been allowed to use our card for a tip. I'm floored at the negative reviews complaining about this convenient feature. The need to carry Euros everywhere has been our Achilles heel. We are always looking for change or smaller bills and frankly it's annoying when at home we can just add tip to the bill. It seems some reviewers perceived the note to add a tip prior to paying as presumptuous, but I loved not having to use my Euros to say thank you for the great food and service. To each their own I guess, but it floored me that people would be upset about someone giving an opportunity to put a tip on your credit card. Agree with reviewers who say the service leaves a lot to be desired here. Our food came out in the oddest order. I didn't care for my dish and the waiters said that I should've known the fish would have a "strong taste". Solicited tips when they brought the bill. A bit aggressive in reminding you that table service isn't included in the bill... is this different than anywhere else? We spent three days in Naples and was never reminded of this -- and ate at equivalent restaurants many times. I didn't look to see if they added a seating charge or not -- which is a table service charge -- which many restaurants were happy to wave if the bill met some unknown threshold. It was my birthday and eating pasta in Sorrento was a fabulous way to celebrate. We had some wine because -- we were in Italy. The waiters gave us some bread and focaccia before our meal which was very nice. Since I had pasta for lunch I had their risotto with chunks of lobster which was to die for. My husband had the fish which was so fresh with lemons. Everything around Sorrento was served with the amazing local lemons. Since it was my birthday the waiters brought me a gelato with a candle. Our first night in Sorrento. We walked by this place and thought it looked good and ended up back here once we were hungry. They stated by bringing both bruchetta and bread, the best bread I've had in Italy so far. I ordered the spinach and potato gnocchi with salmon sauce and a glass of house white wine. The sauce was a nice cream sauce with a salmon like taste, but no actual pieces of salmon. It was very tasty and light. My friend ordered a salad which looked fresh and good with tomatoes and vegetable soup. She liked the salad and said the soup was fine, nothing special. Service was good and priced were affordable. Had both indoor and outdoor seating. We sat indoors since it was chilly. We were able to watch the cook make the Oscar pizza and bruchetta in the brick oven. Generally traveling my rule is to always try something new, but here we are twice. Once for dinner and once for lunch and both days it was my favorite pizza in all of Italy! Sorrento in general is really overwhelming because it's so touristy and there are so many options but L'Abate was the right choice! There are outside inside and covered patio options and although it is a bit more pricey than other restaurants I do think the food was worthwhile. We also had the creme brûlée and a lemon profiterole and both were delicious. Service was generally friendly, menu was in English and staff were also English speaking, they even offer free WiFi. Every 1 star review you read is accurate. This place is absolutely pretentious and rude. Made eye contact with the host 3 times and he never even approached me. This isn't the only place that has meat and fish. There are plenty of other places in walking distance that treat you better and have better service and prices. AVOID THIS PLACE unless you want to feel disrespected for absolutely no reason. Also, the owner in the suit looks like a clown. That should tell you everything you need to know. read more

This is a nice and popular restaurant very near the main square of Sorrento and next to the Basilica of S. Antonino. In fact, you will probably have to wait a bit to get a table outside although they always have tables available inside. The food is very good. The ingredients are fresh, not over-seasoned and the portions are huge. We averaged about EUR70 for 2 people (3 courses including wine). The service was very good - attentive without being invasive and any mistakes were quickly corrected. I particularly liked their gnochetti. This was the only restaurant we went back to in our week-long stay in Sorrento. I would recommend you try it if you're in the area. read more

This was the first place we went in our stay in Sorrento. I had the seafood linguine and my group shared the fried fritter platter. The fritters were assorted and cooked through well. They were soft, some were the traditional zucchini, some her filled with cheese, some were mini rice balls, it was a surprise but a very welcome one. I got a half litre of the house rose, it was dry with a hint of sweet, it was very affordable, cold and delicious. My pasta was fairly al dente, but I realized quickly that's how the majority of the restaurants cook it. The seafood, ugh the seafood was just so fresh. You could tell a major difference from the Amalfi coast vs. central Canada! We would have gone back if there wasn't dozens of different restaurants to try!! read more

As my appetizer I ordered the Cream of Asparagus soup, which was delicious with a fresh light taste and no heavy cream. Outdoor dining with live music making it a perfect night out! This was hard to decide on the star level for this restaurant we went here two nights in a row bc the food was good the first night and the menu was so big -we wanted to try multiple dishes. Location was right next to our hotel (Grand Tramontano) and after long days of sightseeing it was nice not to have to go far. The tomato soup was delicious as was their pizza, lasagna and ravioli were good as well. We were clearly looking to compare our knowledge of traditional dishes and compare to how they taste in Italy, so we weren't too adventurous in our selection however we were satisfied. The live music was quite entertaining. Especially his version of Video Killed the Radio star. Dessert was never tried since we had our fill both times w appetizers and our meals. I do not recommend this restaurant. It was 530pm and we stopped here because the place was almost empty... we wanted something quick and easy. We entered and waited for 10 minutes before anyone acknowledged us. When we ask for a table they asked if we wanted dinner. We told them we wanted something light (appetizers) and drinks and they said no! There was no explanation, nothing about no availability due to upcoming reservations, nada. It was very odd considering they only had 2 tables with customers. We gladly took our business elsewhere. read more

My wife and I have visited 4 Italian cities on our trip so far and this place has had the best margarita pizza and ravioli so far. It must be that tomato sauce because we were both fans. Terrific corner location next to the basilica. There are indoor and upstairs tables, but sit outside to enjoy great people-watching in Piazza San Antonino. Large menu and big wine list (mostly bottles with limited house wines by the glass.) Good pizzas and pastas. I had a wonderful minestrone soup. Friendly, efficient service. Immaculately clean open kitchen and bathrooms upstairs. A solid recommend. read more
