We came to Sorrento Italy for a bow renewal and we were able to come to the welcome dinner at Donna Sophia. They were able to accommodate 30 of us. We also had children a part of the party. They were very accommodating in regards to what the children can order and we were offered a prefix menu. My husband ordered mixed seafood black squid in pasta, which was amazing. It also had a little kick to it. I ordered the almond crusted fish, which was pretty good. It was lacking a little bit in flavor. However, I did really enjoy my first Hugo spritz in Italy and the espresso martini at this restaurant is so divine. It was high touch, with the best care from our servers, who selected the most delicious appetizers, and we ordered beautiful mushroom salad, first and second course meals which included truffle ravioli, steak, veal, and fettuccini. We stumbled upon this place while wandering around Sorrento. It was packed, but we asked for a table for two and we waited five minutes before being seated. The inside was warmly and dimly lit - not too dark, just enough to give it a romantic atmosphere. The walls are decorated with shots and stills of Sophia Loren. The entire time we were waiting to order or waiting for our meals, I kept hearing people say "that was awesome" or "this is delicious", and when our meals finally came, we had the exact same reactions. The cacio e pepe was hands down my favorite meal in the two and a half week trip to Italy. It was creamy, it was spicy, the noodles were delicious, it was perfect. The lasagna had my fiancee reacting the same way, it was so fresh and hot and absolutely delightful. The service wasn't the best. The staff were efficient and tried to be attentive on a busy night. Our server took our drink and meal orders, two primis and one segundi, and everything was great. But while waiting for the segundi, it just didn't come. Three servers came up to us while we were waiting for about 20 minutes or so, asking if we were finished and wanted dessert. We told all of them we had another plate coming. We kept trying to flag down our waiter and make eye contact but he was serving two other tables dutifully. When he finally came over, my fiancée asked for it to be boxed and for the check, and he said "No, the segundi is coming." Long story short, he boxed it up, we paid and had a nice night overall. Very disappointed with this meal. Upon walking in, the atmosphere seemed very promising but unfortunately did not live up to my expectations. The Donna Sofia appetizer was the highlight of the meal by far. Whatever the pumpkin thing was, it was really good. Onto the entrees--really was not a fan of the truffle ravioli (it was a special of the night). I enjoyed the crab ravioli more but not by much. What really rubbed me the wrong way was an accordion player walking around the restaurant after "playing" (tapping along a few times to background music) trying to guilt customers into a tip. I literally witnessed him stand at the table next to us for over 3 minutes and just stare at the people until they eventually caved and gave him a tip. I think there is a mistranslation and It is misleading. Taste was OK nothing special. Most of their pastas are above average but nothing spectacular. We visited on an evening when rain was expected. We arrive and are seated in the back of the restaurant. The waiter recommended that we select the chef's tasting menu and we did. First course comes out and it's just okay. We finish it and it begins to rain. We quickly realize that we are not sitting inside, but under a large umbrella and we are getting rained on. We jump up and move to a table that another couple had just finished at. Unfortunately for the other people sitting outside, there isn't anywhere for them to move to and they either have to leave or get wet. The second course comes to our table and again, just mediocre. I was very excited as my husband and another couple were recommended to eat at Donna Sofia by one of the owners personal friends from Positano. We spent 2 weeks in Italy, ate at many restaurants, and had marvelous experiences in Rome and Sorrento in every case except at Donna Sofia. We were very disappointed for the following reasons: 1. The male maitre d' hotel and male waiter had ZERO personality and expressed little interest in connecting with us as guests. Zero customer service skills. They were only interested in processing us through the food mill as fast as possible. 2. It was recommended that I try the gnocchi because Donna Sofia made it the best and it is a favorite of mine. Yet, it, and the other food ordered, was mediocre at best. 3. Our bill came to over 300 Euros which we were happy to pay. We only asked the server to split the bill between 2 credit cards. When the male server made the charge, he charged each card over 300 Euros. When one of the members of our party brought the double charge error to the attention of the male server, he was rude. He acted as if we were criminals for pointing out the error. He made excuses and although the maitre d'hotel was apprised there was no effort to assure us that it was a mistake or that our business was appreciated. Absolutely the worse experience that I have had ever. The owner was tending bar and doubling as a waiter, maybe they were short staffed. He was wearing a dirty T-Shirt and rudely came up to our table 2 minutes after we sat with his pen and paper and said "What do you want". Ultimately our table was served by people bringing food to tables, nobody ever came by again to ask if we needed anything. We had to flag down someone running by to get salt and pepper and took 3 times to actually get the salt and pepper. Incredibly impressed. They sent a van to pick us up. Turns out this was a great solution as the last bit to the restaurant is a two way street that barely fits a single car. Food was lights out. Calamari was incredibly fresh and cooked perfectly. There was no need to ask for a dipping sauce (marinara). The caprese salad was incredible - tomatoes were flavorful and the mozzarella had the perfect texture and was incredibly clean/smooth. For dinner I had ravioli special - porcini and truffle stuffing. My wife had the lasagna. Both we're incredibly rich without being heavy. The tomato sauce on the lasagna tasted incredibly fresh (nice acidity without being overbearing). Tiramisu for dessert was also incredible - easy to eat and was prepared well (not to soggy). Our hotel recommend this restaurant and we decided to go because they have a free shuttle. Their little van took us up the hills and through small roads. Pro: ravioli scampi was delicious. A little salty side on the mushroom sauce. Con: Do not order steak. Was super dry when order med rare. I told husband not to order steak as it's not Italian receipe but he didn't listen and had to eat dry meat. Their fried squid & shrimp is a main course so they serve it after my ravioli which I thought is the main course. Favor is a little salty and no sauce to eat with except salad on the side to eat together for less salty taste. The waiter was ok, speaks English with Italian ascents which hard to understand. If you have watched American movies and dreamed of Italy, Donna Sophia is everything you have dreamed and more. The most important aspect of any restaurant is the food. After having eaten in some amazing restaurants I can tell you that the food here is superb. What I expected to be heavy was light and airy. We started with the tapas which was perfect. The variety was so much more than bruschetta. I have fallen in love with squash blossoms here. Lightly battered and fried with a warm cheesy center, it reminds me of the smells in the garden with my grandmother. I don't even like eggplant and I am a total convert. I didn't have one thing that was not amazing. The ambiance is so very quintessential Italian! The wine was a moscato d'asti and it was fantastic. We like a sweet wine in the states and most white here was too dry for us. We asked for a recommendation and we were thrilled with the recommended selection. The staff is excellent and the meal was an event. This was a 3 hour meal over two bottles of wine. I can't even begin to tell you how much you need this experience. All the stress of work and home melted away with the smell of the orchard and the night air. I can go back to the states and remember the night I ate like a true Italian, wine glass in hand and leisurely conversation over an amazing meal. It was perfecto! This restaurant is a must if you visit Sorrento. They offer a free shuttle to and from the restaurant...take them up on it. We actually walked there, but the road leading to it is so narrow that it wasn't safe. When we walked in, the owner immediately greeted us and was adamant we take him up on the free shuttle home, which we did. (The driver was annoyed he had to take us to our hotel because it wasn't on the main road, but I wouldn't lower my review for that or let his attitude affect the restaurant quality). The restaurant served us brucetta as a starter (no cost) which was delicious. We ordered the prawn cocktail as an appitizer which had a tasty sauce. For meals, we ordered the linguine with lobster. The sauce on that was amazing...can't say the lobster was great, but we live in New England and you can't beat Maine lobster. We also ordered the beef filet with gorgonzola sauce. The beef was cooked perfectly and the sauce was yummy. The wait staff bring you all the complimentary lemoncello you desire and are extremely friendly. It's irritating to see poor reviews based on wait staff not speaking English well...you're in Italy, just saying. The beauty of a good restaurant over seas is that they are not touristy. We arrived at 8 PM and, by 8:30, the place began to fill up quickly. Our waiter took his time to (enthusiastically) explain the menus, specials and wine list. We ordered a bottle of the house white (reasonably priced at €18), which was very good. We also ordered the special appetizer sampler, a split of the special truffle ravioli, the oven baked cod, and the veal Sorrento. Dessert was a piece of the special cake with cream and wild strawberries. They began us with 2 wonderful pieces of bruschetta. Appetizer Sampler - WOW this was good. It is a must order. It came with ricotta-stuffed zucchini flowers (I could have eaten many more of these - sooo good), pumpkin flan, fried baby octopus, polenta, fresh tomato (from their garden - some of the best tomato I've ever had), buffalo mozzarella with pancetta (both homemade), and eggplant parmigiana. Our waiter individually plated all of the items on to our plates. Nice touch. Truffle Ravioli - This was lick the plate good. Filled with mushrooms and cheese, these little pockets of goodness had small pieces of truffles in the sauce. I sopped up every bit of sauce with bread. Cod - Super fresh and baked with breadcrumbs. Lemon and orange zest on top, sitting atop a bed of fresh veggies. Really tasty. Veal Sorrento - Tender veal with mozzarella and tomato on top. Delicious. Cake - Another must order item. The cake was almost like a shortbread layered with cream and with beautiful little wild strawberries on top. It was light, yet so satisfying. The strawberries were amazing. I had an espresso, which was very good. Before bringing the bill (around €105), our waiter brought us each a shot of limoncello to sip. Delicious, and a really nice way to end a special dinner.
