Local community radio! This non-profit radio station, 91.7…read moreFM is a cool, refreshing change from all the main stream radio stations. The station is like Austin- weird. Listening to this station, is the soundtrack to keeping Austin Weird. Since it's all local volunteers, the music selections are as diverse as the music tastes in the Live Music Capitol of the World! Seriously, if you don't like the music here, just wait a little bit. Just like the weather in Texas! The DJs change out every few hours, and each one brings their own selection of weird music. You're not going to hear Top 40 on here. I like the fact that there's no real advertisements on this station. They're all public service announcements, and local issues that they talk about. The coolest thing about this station is that if you wanna get on the radio badly enough, they'll put you on the air, and provide the training on how to do it! KOOP's mission is "to engage, connect and enrich the whole community, including the underserved, through creating diverse, quality, educational music and news programming." They fulfill their mission!

Ok I don't know shit about Tejano music, but, I do know that the more I drink the more I like it…read more It just so happens that we have two Yelpers who DJ at PTR sometimes. You may know them. Ron U. (Disco Duck) and Larry E (El Toro Brovo). They are funny as shit and you can chat live with them and request some tunes. I can't name many Tejano bands, but, that's where Google comes in. I've just recently discovered that I actually like La Mafia! They're playing it right now!! It's clear that our two Yelpers come here and have a good ass time. Not sure what goes on in the studio but they appear to get drunk or get the munchies (ahem) and cut up and play some really good stuff including occasional disco. Yep disco and other stuff. You don't need to know how to speak Spanish or even Spanglish for that fact to enjoy the broadcast. I love all kinds of music and while living here in Texas I have grown quite fond of Tejano. But, like I said I need Google. Now I have Google and the Disco Duck and wild man Larry E. I love listening to their shows and try to catch them on their usual Friday afternoons. Keep up the good work drunk mofo's ( :) ). P.S. I think they get paid with booze and food? P.S.S. You never know what you're going to hear coming through the mic! Flatulence is not off limits!! Just sayin'.

Always on the lookout for new Tejano stations. This one is saved on my favoritesread more

The kind of country that is like putting beans in your chili. That ain't country. These guys sound more like pop music or contemporary. It's all about love and stuff, where country music is generally sorta the opposite- their songs don't have any mention of prison, mamma, trucks, or gettin' drunk. So many commercials! It all sounds so formulaic. There's no personality to this corporate radio station. I don't ever hear any local musicians on here. Messing up country music in the Live Music Capital of the World is like messing with Texas. Keep turning that dial...

You see, this was my favorite station when I lived in Texas, and after having visited Austin for the weekend, I decided to Yelp about it. It's not a "pure" local country station. It's corporate - part of Clear Channel. But I don't care... so long as it has good country music. (Corporations aren't bad just because they're successful at what they do.)I've been starved of my Country music since our bay area country station went off the air, so this was a breath of fresh air. To be honest, I prefer Tennessee Country to Texas Country (I know, shame on me,) and for those who don't know, most every one of the nationally known Country artists are Tennessee Country. You know, the ones that head to Memphis in search of stardom. Anyway I do miss the city. So I'll admit part of this review is nostalgia. But I had my radio tuned to KASE for my entire weekend... except for a short stint on some other country station that billed itself as Austin's own radio station, except after accidentally setting KASE to the preset that the other station was on, I couldn't find it again. Five stars for "will always listen to this when I'm in town. And will listen to it online whenever I need my country fix."
