We were stuck in limbo after a previous flooring company botched the front half of our home's floors. They placed felt pads on our furniture, moved everything into our garage for a very reasonable fee, and then moved everything back afterward. They also protected our entire space: every entry, our 20-foot foyer, and every light fixture and wall hanging were covered with plastic to keep any sanding dust from escaping their dustless sanding systems. Once the dustless sanding was finished, Rudy and Jimmy walked us through our options for staining versus unstaining. We chose unstained floors, sealed with one coat of Bona Clear and two coats of Bona Traffic HD. By the time they were done, we had gorgeous floors that completely transformed our home. I expected to need a cleaning service once the job was finished, but Jimmy and his team handled everything. They cleaned our entire space--vacuuming even the curved staircase and upstairs hallway--so when they were done, there was no dust left behind. We've had quite a few projects on our home, and while most have been very positive, we've never had anyone like Jimmy--he takes real pride in his workmanship and genuinely cares about his clients. Because my husband's chronic illness has made us overlook some small issues around the house, Jimmy stepped in without being asked: he replaced a broken doorstop, repaired a damaged light fixture, and even changed the lightbulbs in our pantry. We had a problem with the main drain line going out of the house under the back door, so we had to have a plumbing company rip up a roughly 2 X 3 foot patch of hardwood floor--which was only two years old, a heartbreaking decision--and jack hammer through a concrete footer to replace the pipe. They re-did the concrete afterward, but we still needed someone to repair the hardwood floor. I got a couple different quotes, and Rudy's was the more expensive, but his crew was able to start almost right away. They had to spread the work over three days because of the time required for the stain to dry, but they were basically finished at the end of the second day. They did an amazing job. You really cannot tell that the area in question is any different from the rest of the floor. This is what they promised when they gave me the estimate, and they fully delivered. They also tented the area, so there was no mess afterward. I would definitely hire them again, maybe next time to do some built-in bookshelves. The photos show what the plumbing company did and how they left the floor. This is what Kustom started with. And then there's an "after" photo. I have received repeated email solicitations from this company to write a favorable review of their work, even though I have never used their services. At one point, perhaps 18 months ago, I contacted them about doing an estimate for a job. But we did not use them and I don't think we had them in for an estimate. It is not clear how widely they are spamming for favorable reviews. I called to ask, and could not get a straight answer out of them. The guy who answered the phone could not find any record of my having been a customer. So I suggest to other consumers that they take positive reviews of this company with a grain of salt. UPDATE I spoke to the other owner of the business who explained that they had outsourced to a company called Signpost the business of soliciting reviews from their customers. She did not know how my name and email address has come to be included in the list to be solicited, but she said she was positive that all the reviews here were posted by real customers. Rudy could not have been more rude and nasty. We asked him for an estimate to refinish old oak floors in a very nice, well built house. Some wood would have to be replaced due to an earlier fix because the floor had been carpeted. I had three other estimators who recognized the value of restoration and replacing only as necessary. I made it clear before requesting an estimate that we wanted refinish. Rudy wanted us to replace all the floors with pre-finished wood, which I do not prefer. Other companies understood the assignment and gave me honest advice about which areas may present a problem but that I could look at the floors after the first deep sanding and decide what I wanted to do from there. Rudy looked at one of our bedrooms which had already been refinished. The floor looked so wonderful that Rudy said well this is a new floor to which I replied, "No this floor has been refinished." The point being that done correctly much of the floor in this house can look amazing. of course with any older home, it's unpredictable what you may find when you start. however the beauty of wood is that you can refinish and repair and replace and clean and even dark stain. Rudy asked me if I had a budget for this project and I told him I am getting estimates now. Why? because it's all based on what a particular company has the capability to do and what the floors will look like if I am willing to accept some things that are not optimal but economical if you don't want to replace all the wood in your home. it's also based on their professional judgement on what work needs to be done and how much they charge to do it. He said with the most snarky attitude that "We work with budgets." Then he proceeded to try to school me about how it is an investment, blah blah blah but that is not his job. He did not even send me an estimate. Thankfully, I ignored his "advice" because he was WRONG. A more experienced company restored our floors to all its former glory. read more

I used Kustom Floors for my house in Chevy Chase. I had a couple of different recommendations from colleagues and for Kustom Floors, the recommendation was "if you want the floors done perfectly use them". It was true. They did my whole house and used a flat grey, espresso stain that everyone compliments when they arrive. Also, they were meticulous in set up and clean up and took care of my house as if it was their own. Kustom Floors also does home renovation and based on their prior work, I kept adding more - eventually renovating my entire with Kustom Floors. The bathrooms, kitchen, basement, all of it. My husband reached out to them, Rudy came out to take a look and was able to find the replacement planks although it was discontinued. That was unbelievable because our house is about 7 years old and the builder did not leave us any leftover planks. We received a reasonable quote and scheduled the job. I knew I was working with someone that was very detail oriented from my first phone call with Rudy. They generally did things fine. If you get Rudy himself, he is excellent and did a great job on half our house. Unfortunately, the second guy who came did work on the second half of the house were not as good as Rudy. The office didn't keep details on the work, and so the second guy asked me what kind of poly finish was used in the other half. I didn't know exactly, but I guess they decided to go with whatever they had and now I have half a house with a low sheen finish and half with a visibly higher sheen. Frankly, they're the experts, and I imagine they should have been able to tell by looking at the floor at least what level of gloss was in the first half. Also, during the staining process, one of the guys stepped into the room and left foot print marks. When I pointed this out the next day, the guy asked me if I had stepped into the room, which you can clearly see I hadn't since the foot print was far larger than mine. Also, the sanding work is uneven, and you can see round sanding marks in the floor. None of this was a problem with Rudy. Given that they aren't the cheapest by a mile, I'd expect a little more. I will say the installers were great. 5 stars for Rudy, 3 stars for his other team, weighted towards 3 because the final product looks like 2 different people did it and it shouldn't. I'd recommend them to other people but I would say ask for Rudy. read more

Re-did all of the floors/stairs in our Row House.  Sanded and refinished one floor, removed carpet, leveled and installed another hardwood floor, and polished two existing vintage floors.  Sanded and refinished three levels of stairs, handrails, and newel posts. I've worked with a lot of contractors, having bought and sold homes recently. Rudy and team are a dream come true.  Work that surpasses expectations.  Rudy and team are not just tradesmen, they are artisans.  Carefully hand-crafted work with attention to detail.  Rudy wants everything to be just right. I interviewed three firms, all highly rated.  One never even submitted a bid, a second, large one, bid, but had no real thoughts on species, colors, details, and did not spend the time necessary to point out the details that could be fixed and improved.  They sent a salesman, not a craftsman.  Sure, they were a little less expensive to start, but I had no confidence they would do the job well.  Rudy came himself and pointed out all sorts of ways to make the project better.  He talked about species, options, colors,etc. He stained the floor different colors for us to compare and he knew better than we did which one was right.  Every time we have gone with his opinion it has been right. We had a major plumbing issue that caused damage to the hardwoods on our main floor. A big section of wood needed to be removed and new hardwoods installed. We needed the new wood to fit seamlessly with the existing hardwoods that weren't damaged. Then the entire main floor needed to be sanded and refinished. Rudy and his team are extremely professional and take great pride in their work. Rudy evaluated the work to be done exactly and the installation process went impeccably well. He went above and beyond to make sure that everything fit perfectly and that we didn't notice the difference between the old and new hardwoods. During the sanding and refinishing process, Rudy and his team were very careful with moving all our furniture in and out of the house, ensuring that we were totally satisfied throughout the process. Description of work: Carpet and hardwood flooring demo and replace with hardwood flooring in office, foyer, living room, dining room, 2nd floor hall and landing. Carpet demo and replace with hardwood treads, risers and brackets on curved staircase. Sand, and refinish railing and posts, and paint balusters on staircase and 2nd floor landing bannister. Paint trim on staircase and landing. We had been wanting to replace the carpeting in a number of rooms on the first floor of our home with hardwood flooring. We also decided to include the carpeted curved staircase and second floor hallway and landing into the master suite. Based on the great reviews in Angie's List we decided to have Kustom Floors give us an estimate. Rudy came out to the house and only after listening closely to what we wanted to do, looked throughout the planned work area, provided some great suggestions to make things look even better and worked up an estimate. Because we were doing some custom work with a curved staircase, he came out a second time to explain in great detail what work they would do. Rudy also brought a number of samples that we could put on the exiting floor and decide the type and color of hardwood flooring that we wanted to use. He gave his opinion and provided pros and cons of each material. His estimate was very thorough and he answered all of our questions. We decided to go with prefinished hardwood on the floors. Because the staircase was curved, Rudy suggested that we use unfinished wood that they would sand, stain and seal to match the floor, as best they could. Instead of replacing the bannister we decided to sand, and refinish the existing railing and posts, and paint the balusters on the staircase and second floor landing. Rudy's brother, Jamie is the supervisor of their crew and also did all of the custom work. Let me say up front that he is a miracle worker. We had two transitions into the kitchen that were uneven due to tiled floor in the kitchen that was installed after the house was originally built. Where we previously had a piece of molding in the doorway between the foyer and kitchen Jamie was able to adjust the new hardwood floor to imperceptibly rise to the level of the kitchen floor at the transition. He also did a beautiful job on the curved staircase. There was a lot of manual cutting and sanding for each tread, riser and bracket. Jamie's crew moved all of the furniture, put felt pads on everything that would ultimately touch the wood flooring, put plastic sheeting up on the doorways outside of the worksite and very thoroughly cleaned up each evening after stopping for the day. They arrived every day at 8:00 AM and would rarely leave before 6:00 PM. While Rudy estimated the job would last a week, it actually lasted two weeks because the staircase was more of a challenge than I think he originally estimated. We were fine with this because they took the time needed to do the work correctly, instead of hurrying through the job to meet the initial deadline. Rudy was very attentive and called frequently to see how things were going and to answer any questions that we had. Jamie would provide us with a daily status before he left letting us know what they had accomplished and what was planned for the next day. The demo of the existing flooring went smoothly and they prepped all areas including adding additional screws to the subfloor to stop them from squeaking. Installation of the new flooring was very methodical and professional. It was very clear that Jamie and his entire crew knew what they were doing. We are probably not the easiest customers to deal with during a job (perfectionists) and tend to point out any issues before there is a chance to correct them. Due to their do it right the first time attitude, there were very few instances of this and when there were, Jamie patiently listened to us and promptly addressed our concerns. Kustom Floors also provided the carpet installer to take care of all of the newly formed transitions from wood to carpeting in our second floor bedrooms, and painter to paint the staircase trim work, and balusters. I had 3 contractors come out and Rudy took out some magnets and showed me why I had some bowing of floor boards after a sprinkler pipe had burst, it was because they installation company had inconsistently applied nails to the floor. Rudy showed me stain marks and sanding marks from the original work that proved such was not the case. Again, the only out of the three to notice such.
