Because of that, it's essential to have a stylist with genuine passion for what they do--not someone who treats it like a money grab, which happened in my experience here. Unfortunately, my stylist, Alayah, dismissed my concerns entirely. When I reached out about my hair color fading in less than three weeks, she showed no empathy, no accountability, and no regard for how I felt. Instead, she told me to "find a stylist in my area since my budget was low." That was beyond disappointing. I attached a photo below our my kind message with her un empathetic response. For context: I live out of state. The first time I came, I loved my results so much that I booked again and flew back just a few weeks ago for another appointment. This time, the color barely lasted, and when I politely messaged her, her response implied I should pay again for a correction--despite me already having paid for the original service, plus flights, plus a higher in-person price than what was listed online. She also knew I had arranged my travel entirely around her availability, yet I was still treated as nothing more than a dollar sign. There was a true lack of care, professionalism, and customer service skills. I once posted a TikTok recommending this salon, which had over 30,000 views, but I can no longer stand by that. So I finally decided to take care of my curly natural hair and try Kurlykoils. It was absolutely the best decision that I have ever made. I first had a consultation with Deja. The shop was clean, the vibe was peaceful and relaxing. She did an amazing job explaining everything to me one what they do at the shop and then what I should do moving forward to book. Deja made me real comfort and more at ease after my consultation. Once I made it back to my vehicle I immediately booked my new client appointment with Deja. When I came in for my new client appointment I was greeted and was asked to wash my hands. Something I love being OCD. I was offered free snacks and water. I was then told that my stylist was finishing up with her client and would be right with me. I waited only a few minutes and after Deja cleaned her area we got right to it. Deja explained every thing to me as she did things step by step. She even gave me a mirror so that I could see what the product was doing to my hair. This is something I have never experienced in my 43 years of getting my hair done. The process was absolutely amazing and I love the care given to my hair and color. I was not in the shop all day and my appointment time was did not run over. Once we were finished with my hair I was offered all of the products that were used in my hair during my appointment. I have never cried after a hair appointment. And the fact that I cried after this one should tell you a lot. I made an appointment for 1 PM for a "LUV session". The day of at 11 AM I get a text that my appointment has been pushed back by 45 minutes. No apology, no reason why, and no option to rebook for another day. Just a very abrupt and somewhat rude way of communicating. I responded asking if there were other options and my text was ignored. I took the risk and drove there, and got to my appointment a little after 1:45pm. Right when I entered salon, I was immediately told to go wash my hands and sit in the chair. Again no explanation of why. Just overall a very rude way interacting with a new customer. (If it was for Covid protocols, at least be courteous, and mention that). But I highly doubt that's the reason because no one was wearing a mask, and the place wasn't even that clean. The back room where I was asked to wash my hands was chaotic and looked dirty. She started on my hair by shampooing and talking me through all the different products I "should" be using. A few products she mentioned, I had already had already tried them, but I don't use them because they coated my hair in the worst way (i.e they left my hair in a sticky, coated, tangled mess). I told her that I liked more volume and I didn't care for definition. She tried to convince me that the best way to have 4c hair is weigh it down with a gel if a customer tells you how they like their hair don't ignore that. I have been a natural for as long as I can remember, so I know how to take care of my hair. I came to this appointment because after moving here, the hard water in Indianapolis has been really damaging to my hair, and I wanted a "professional" to take a look. Thankfully, she WAS able to recommend a product for hard water--but I'd argue that you can find a same product by a quick google search of "hair products for hard water". The "LUV session" doesn't include a cut, but after my hair was done, she insisted that my hair was in a "heart shape" and it needed to be fix. Even though I told her I like my hair like that. I only wanted to cut if I had damaged ends, but she did not mention at any point that my ends were damaged. I think SHE just didn't like my hair shape. I gave up and agreed to let her style it, but I said "just don't cut it into an umbrella/triangle shape, if you can make it round that be perfect". So I relaxed and gave her a chance. After about 15 minutes, she was done cutting and spun the chair around so I could take a look--and I immediately wanted to cry. She gave me the exact cut I didn't want. My hair looks like the shape of a triangle (with a side part). She cut the back of my hair extremely short and then the middle sections were left long. If you only know how to cut one hairstyle, just say that--and let people know you can't do anything else! The day after my appointment, I woke up with sections of my hair STILL damp with clumps of gel and the back curls had started to dread up--all the exact reasons why I don't use the product she recommended. I texted asking for suggestions of alternatives, again my text was ignored and no response. The kicker after all of this, is that the total appt was $280. What a complete waste of money. Red flags throughout the whole appt, and I wish cancelled after that first text. But I couldn't because I had already made a $50 deposit. TLDR; ONLY go here in you have 0 clue how to take care of your natural hair and you are TRULY desperate. Otherwise you'll end up with a janky cut that makes your look like an umbrella coated in gel read more

The best place to go if you have curly hair, I literally will never let another person touch my hair again. LOOK NO FURTHER. Before I came here, I wore my hair up in buns and braids. I could never wear my hair out and down. I hated my hair and often shaved it. It would also just never grow and kept breaking. I watched video after video and article after article. I received my first and last hair cut at KurlyKoils salon. Let me start off by saying I paid my hard earned luxury money for a less than abysmal experience, and here's why: 1.) When I arrived to my appointment 10 minutes early, my stylist was 20 minutes late to my appointment. 2.) According to the website, new clients are not allowed to book express cuts their first visit... when my stylist asked me if I wanted to do an express cut, I was surprised with this being my first appointment. I booked the full experience of the WASH AND FULL CUT. I felt like I was being rushed out the door even though she was the one who was late. For clarity, being rushed is something a client can absolutely feel. 3.) My hair is not long nor is it thick. It takes about 25m to dry under heat. I sat under the hair dryer for about 1h and 20 minutes while my stylist took another client. She did not even check if I was dry during this time. She just left me there. 4.) On the website, the service that I chose takes 2 hours. 2 hours had passed before we even got to the cut itself. The cut is why I came in the first place. 5.) Once I'm in my stylists' chair again, she tells me that my "hair actually looks fine and I don't even need a cut". At this point, I'm incredibly frustrated because I haven't had a cut since January and I've been there for 2 hours just to hear her say I don't need it. I'm very informed about my hair, and I knew I was past due for one. Also, I wanted a cut for style purposes. Once again, it felt like she was again trying to rush me out the door. 6.) I asked her to cut it anyway because I'm due, and I want a new shape! The cut itself takes no more than 20 minutes. As a fellow licensed cosmetologist and Deva Cut certified stylist, 20 minutes is NOT sufficient time to do a thorough curly cut. 7.) We walk up to the register and to my surprise, I'm charged an additional $50, on top of the $120 for the actual service because I'm a new client to the salon. I was completely mystified . This information was not visibly upfront on the website when I booked. Apparently, the new customer fee is located under the " Frequently asked questions" tab which feels very deceiving and misleading. 8.) Lastly, despite my unfulfilling experience, I initially liked my haircut. A few days later, I blow dried my hair to do a protective style. To my surprise, it was drastically UNEVEN! The left side was significantly longer than my right side. As a curly stylist, I am aware that curly hair falls differently than straight when cutting. However, when time is taken to do the cut properly, there should never be a remarkably visible difference in length. I paid for a luxury hair cut only to end up fixing it myself. Completely unacceptable and disheartening. I was very very disappointed, unhappy, and frustrated with my whole experience. As much as I want to and love to support black businesses, I simply cannot muster up the tenacity to ever support this salon again. The staff and service rendered reflected poorly on the owner unfortunately. My experience made me feel as though neither I or my black dollars were valuable to this business. My goal is to never tear down another black business. However, because my experience was poor and costly, full transparency is owed to everyone considering using this service. READ BEFORE BOOKING A COLOR: I was very excited for my color and had waited 3 months for it. I booked with Alayah. This was my second time ever having color and first time with highlights versus lowlights. The red highlights were very cute for the first week and a half (see before pics below). When it was time to wash my hair (with Innersense which is also used in the salon), I noticed the red rinsing down the drain. I then saw the red had faded from my hair and it looked orange and you can see where the bleach was added (see pics below). I reached out to Alayah to let her know what happened and sent pics, and haven't received a clear resolution. Do not get color here unless you'd like to spend $300 for a color to last 1.5 weeks or plan to never wash your hair ever.
