The food is amazing and we always get our sushi from Kunis. We have however resorted to ordering ahead for take out because the last few times the staff has been rude and could not be bothered by a table for two. Twice there were tables available and we were told they were for parties of three or more though no one was waiting. Then we were told the bar was closed despite three people sitting there...wait time 25 minutes. We love your sushi and have been loyal patrons since Elmwood. I lived in Japan for a year and was largely horrified at the sushi I encountered after returning to the States. Luckily there is Kuni's, a shining beacon of raw fish in a land of fried food and overcooked meat. The quality of ingredients is consistently good and while the presentation might not always be exactly what I found in Kagoshima, it's still attractive enough to be incredibly appealing. Service is decent and very friendly, which always helps when you have to wait an hour for a table (and if you come on the weekend, wait you will). I love the sashimi special: 10 - 12 pieces of raw fish artfully arranged. Last night I tried the soba noodle salad, which is decorated with sweet tofu, cucumber, carrots, sprouts, and wakame. Served cold, it was the perfect refreshing warm-weather dish. Their rolls are also top notch, several million times better than the stale-tasting chewy abominations you find at Wegman's. Last night's was eel and avocado and it was good enough that I brought the rest to work for lunch, which I think says a lot... sushi has to be really good to eat it leftover. Be prepared to walk a bit to get there, parking is on the street and usually tough to find. Overall, definitely would recommend. read more

The sushi is high quality that's undeniable, however, getting into the restaurant to eat because it's on a highly parked street off of Elmwood Ave (on Lexington Ave) with no parking because it's shared with other establishments and residents most of the time makes it a headache at times. Once you can find parking (if you can) you'll get your meal, the soup is the same as anywhere else, nothing spectacular, but that doesn't mean bad it just doesn't mean it's a mind blowing difference to any other sushi place you'll find for the meso soup. The portions of your meal that you get are skimpy in my personal opinion for the price that you're paying for it. I understand good sushi costs more money than any regular sushi bar, but when you go home hungry and your wallets a lot lighter than expected then you tend to have a WTF kind of moment (at least if you are like me, everyone's opinion can be different I am 6'3 225lbs) The place is pretty small, and since it's a local hangout for the sushi lovers in the city there's a wait a lot of the time. I would go and try to get in to see for yourself but don't kill yourself finding a parking spot or waiting to get in, just try again another day. read more

Kuni's is simply put, one of the best Sushi restaurants I've ever been to. It doesn't hurt that you can see it from my front porch, but that should in no way diminish how good it is. Get the tender salad, get the sashimi platter, and enjoy a little Sake to wash it all down. You'll be glad you came. Just don't expect to walk in a get a seat. read more

I hadn't been to Kuni's in ages, for no good reason, and ended up there last week. My husband and I were looking for something different for dinner, and wanted to stay in the neighborhood. So we went to Kuni's and ate at the bar. I remember Kuni's being good, but WOW, this was amazing. We started with a special appetizer that was mainly about the tuna, which was lightly cooked on the outside and raw on the inside. Delicious. We moved on to an order of wasabi shumai, little pieces of pork wrapped in a delicate pasta like shell infused with spicy wasabi. They're terrific, and really pack a punch. We split a couple of rolls. Super fresh and filling. It was a lot of fun eating at the bar. The bartender helped us make good selections. Kuni's is a great little neighborhood restaurant. It's always packed, so make rezzies or be prepared to wait. But it's worth it. read more

The girl and I ate at this very charming restaurant on a recent Sunday. Parking was a bit tight, and without the Mini, we would have probably not found a parking spot and drove on to the burbs. The place was very busy, ye we were cheerfully seated and served promptly. The place was totally full - lots of tables very closely spaced. We felt a little claustrophobic New to Kuni's,but not to sushi, the server guided us through the menu, and we went with a couple of her suggestions as well as our favorite sushi standards. Highlights: My girl loved the KFC (Kuni's Fried Chicken) but thought it was a small portion, I thought it was sort of pedestrian, with a very salty dipping sauce and small. The Salmon and Tuna rolls were small but nice, and the octopus and surf clam nigari - small but tasty! On the suggestion of our server, were ordered Sashimi 21 ( described in the menu as: A chef's selection of thinly sliced sashimi, avocado and capers topped with yuzu-marinated onions and jalapeños - 14.00) Oh Heck No!! - cant get over how really ill-conceived and wrong this dish was!! Onion overpowering sauce which overpowered everything but the capers, ohh.... and small. HOW did anyone think this was a great idea? Anyway, we had some sake, and, as we are sake neophytes, relied on the server for half of our selections. On the most part they were good but a cream-top selection was at best barley drinkable to our untrained palates. With tip about $100 ( we left a little bit hungry) Overall - a good place for sushi, yet a tad expensive for what were ordered. I'll say ditto to another review here- I liked it on Elmwood (when I lived next door whole paycheck disappeared under the burden of tempura shrimp and udon) and I like it now. I still just order takeout- nothing warms me up better than the large bowls of vegetarian Udon soup- the two slices of tofu are a sweet touch- and a couple pieces. My favorite "sushi" is the shitake mushroom piece, avocado piece, tofu roll, and shrimp tempura roll. Beyond the food- the small restaurant is warm and comfy. I love the atmosphere and the close knit staff. All in all it would be like going home to eat if your home had a Japanese chef and you had a bunch of attractive sisters to serve you your meals in beautiful dim lighting. read more

I have eaten at sushi restaurants of many varieties, on many budgets, in many cities, and in many cities bigger than Buffalo: Kuni's is one of my favorites. It's certainly the best sushi restaurant in Buffalo, and in my opinion the best restaurant period. The menu is not too complex, but some things I always get in addition to whatever sushi/sashimi I'm ordering: whole grilled squid (I strive to make it like this myself), salmon-skin roll (simple, elegant, crunchy, delicious), and seaweed salads (usually has a couple of different kinds). Most things I've had on the menu are good. The drink menu has a lot of quality sakes and a couple interesting Japanese beers, too. Also, Kuni is awesome. read more

My boyfriend and I LOVE sushi, and have tried the restaurants nearby- (Seabar, Fuji, Dao, etc) and decided on a Friday night to try Kuni's. I followed them on Instagram recently and the food looked great and totally worth a try. We arrived at about 6:30 and were seated immediately, which was nice. Our waitress approached not long after. We ordered waters to drink- which I'm sure they have a problem with but we're not big drinkers. We then ordered the crispy octopus and edamame. The crispy octopus was very hard to chew but had a good flavor. Edamame is always good. We then ordered a Large sushi combo and a separate salmon roll. The sushi was brought out with some random pieces and the rest in roll form. Some pieces had more of a fishy taste, which is fine just not what I prefer. We then ordered the green tea gelato which was delicious! One last thing- my boyfriend and I are sticklers for service and our waitress' was just sub par at best. She was hugging and chatting with her friends often ignoring us, and sat her friends before other customers. We had to flag her down for water and another waitress ended up filling our glasses. After some time we decided to get dessert- and she had already printed out bill... Without even asking if we'd like dessert. The more attentive waitress actually asked us if we'd like to hear the choices, which was great. We overheard her intercept our waitress and tell her we would be ordering dessert. Over all- she was just very pretentious and seemed as if she was trying to rush us out to seat her friends. While we ate I witnessed her take a selfie with another woman. I may be being picky but I like feeling welcomed instead of made to feel like I'm a burden. We wanted to try something new, so maybe we'll be back someday. read more

Please note I did not dine in but ordered take out. Few people mentioned how Kuni's is a good spot to grab some sushi so I decided to order dinner after I got out of work. Now the food is not the problem. The service however was atrocious. It was a Friday on a busy night which I understand it can a bit tough, with that said, the size of the restaurant and having FIVE waitresses not one even acknowledging that I even existed along with a few other customers entering, pretty unacceptable. I look at the bartender hoping she'll help me out, did not even look at me eye to eye. She couldn't let the other girls know that hey theres customers coming in? Along with that I see one girl who literally stared at the cashier screen having no idea what to do but stare. Finally I see a waitress coming along to me, I tell her I'm here to pick up, goes to the next customer who wanted a table. No "Give me a second" or "I will get back to you, Iet me see if the people next to you needs a table". That just agitated me. Once they got their table, she asked me THREE times what my name was. The funniest part, I only see one take out bag. The check came quick which of course I wasn't surprised. I've been in the food industry and I know it can be hectic, but the staff is just terribly disorganized. I hope for the best that there's some training later in the future. read more

I've always wanted to try Kuni's and I finally got a chance to try it. From reviews I've read earlier, I knew what I was expecting going into the restaurant. There definitely was a crowd of people waiting ahead of me but when you go in a hostess asks for your name and phone number. She told us our wait would be 45 minutes to an hour. My friend and I took that time to look over the menu and decide what we wanted to order. Thankfully we did that so we didn't have to waste time deciding what to order when we actually got our seats. I ordered the fried chicken, a salmon sashimi piece and a shrimp tempura roll. Everything was delicious. The fried chicken was not super greasy and very crispy and juicy on the inside. The shrimp tempura was also not greasy (unlike other shrimp tempura I've had before) which I was very pleased about. I also got a strawberry ramune which is always one of my favorite sodas to get at Japanese restaurants. It brings back childhood memories. I would definitely recommend Kuni's and it is worth the wait. read more

I had a fun night out with some friends at Kuni's in November of 2017. We ordered a bunch of rolls and appetizers to share. The beef on weck roll was amazing! It is worth the 15 dollar price tag. They have a few non Japanese appetizers which is different, but the meatballs were better than most Italian restaurants. Kuni's is pricier than other sushi places in Buffalo but the beef on weck roll is worth it! The California and Shrimp Tempura rolls were average and not worth the extra price. I went to Kuni's with my sister and a friend for my birthday last year. It's sad that they don't take reservations, so it took us forever to get the seats. It took us a while to get the food, since it was so packed. The food was good, the best from Buffalo, but if from other area, you might not think this place is the best! I'm sure I had other great experiences from elsewhere, but in Buffalo, this place is the best place to get fresh, and good sashimi. Sashimis are sliced pretty thick, so that's a good thing. The one and only sushi place worth going to in Buffalo. Believe me. Japanese friends have told me they never had sushi quite as good in NYC or Toronto. Kuni's is a gift to Buffalo. I've had a little bit of everything at Kuni's, but it's a good idea to try the sample platter which has a variety selected by the chef. Unless you just reeeally like tuna or something specific, then you can stick to your favorite. I also recommend the wasabi shumai, it's got a healthy kick from the wasabi but it's so yummy inside. Man oh man, this place was amazing. Started off with the magical mist sake, and another milky honeydew one (the name I forget) and were both incredibly smooth and flavorful (the sake selection here is top-notch.) Then the miso soup - some of the best miso soup ever. So delicious and satisfying, and I thoroughly enjoyed slurping it up as I waited for our sashimi combo. Then, oh my god, the sashimi. SO. GOOD. There was some different tuna, mackerel, and something else super fishy. The seared tuna was soooo delicious, I would get just a plate of that if I came again. The mackerel was super fishy, but still good. I've had a lot of sushi and this was some of the highest quality sashimi I've had, the red tuna literally melted in mouth. I don't think I've ever had such thick and delicious slices of raw fish in my entire life; I'd definitely recommend trying out the sashimi here (pricier than other items on the menu, but for sure worth it). We got the smaller combo, so decided to get a roll as well - as per the recommendation of our lovely waitress (who was so sweet and helpful), we tried the scallop cucumber one. It did not disappoint.
