Kitchen / bathroom distance from youth yurt
    Claire C.

Great camping experience!! We spent a week in the newly renovated youth yurt. Absolutely loved it!!! Comfortably fit the 4 of us in the king/queen bunk bed. Also came with a small table, 4 chairs, full refrigerator, lamp and one outlet. We brought extra lamps with us as well as an extension cord with extra outlets as there is only 2 plug ins in the yurt. Felt super safe in the area and loved the people working here. Came with clean bottom sheets on both beds and clean pillows. Bring extra blankets! The showers were warm & clean as well! Great patio in front and a pretty view of the ocean. Free coffee from 7:30-8:30 We definitely recommend this place if you're looking for a camping experience.

Pros: Locally run operation with great intentions. Ocean views, right next to your campsite. Affordable as far as lodging on Kaua'i goes. Showers are hot. Cons: $40 is a lot of money for two people to camp. Massive, bright floodlights stay on all night long, ruining ambiance and star viewing. (and making it look like the sun is constantly about to rise from your tent) Also, this place has an environmental focus, why leave these power hungry lights on all night long? Bees building a hive in the bathroom. (not a joke) Dirt. Dirt everywhere. This area could really, really use some grass. The whole area looks like it has been strip mined. Misleading online representation: this place presents as a lush environmental/yoga retreat. There is almost nothing green here though, (see above) so it feels a little deceptive. Loud 4x4's doing burnouts on the beach all night long. (not the fault of Kumu, but should be noted) Conclusion: If you're looking for a cheap place to sleep near Kapa'a, this is it. I'd recommend spending the extra money on one of there bungalos/tentalos though, $40 is a lot of money to sleep in your own tent on the dirt.

Stayed here for two nights of our camping trip because they accept rooftop tents. They have so many options for camping, bungalows, yurt ground tent etc. they have coffee hour in the morning and Donna (property manager) is so sweet. It's a little on the pricey side for a campground but it's probably the best one Ive stayed at so I wouldn't mind paying the price. It was $70 beach front for two and $50 for the photo I posted location.

We loved staying here. We got a bungalo. It was clean , warm, and 10 steps to the beach. The bathrooms were clean, the camp host is lovely. Can't say enough...go there for a truly genuine Hawaiian experience.

Such a great place to stay on the island of Kauai. I like to get out of the condos and feel like I am actual staying on the island. The hosts are wonderful and you have a choice of camping out in a tent, tentalow or yurt. If you choose a camp spot, you can just pick up a tent at Walmart or Costco. There are also other places that rent out VW camper vans and you can bring them here to camp. The location is perfect - right on the beach. If you prefer calm waters to swim, you can walk to the right, past another camp ground, go all the way to the end and there is the most beautiful cove to swim in. Also the location is great as far as getting to other parts of the island to see. It's around half way to the north and south of the island.

Kumu camp was recommended by a friend and it was Everything they said it would be. It is the perfect place to stay if you like a more natural experience, connected with nature and down to earth. Not only is staying here economic compared to expensive resort hotels with no personality, you can have a sweet, romantic private beach view getaway Or commute with other travelers, have early morning coffee, grill in the outdoor kitchen and eat by the beach, and feel the sand between your toes. The bungalows are perfect, queen sized bed or two twins, sheets and pillowcases are provided but you can bring your own if you like and extra sleeping bag or light blankets to get cozy at night. We stopped and grabbed a battery powered lantern at Walmart but even just a flashlight will do since there is no electricity. There are overhead lights at night lighting the way to the bathrooms which have a code. The bathrooms are clean and well stocked and the manager Donna is so nice and helpful to any questions you may have. The land is beautiful and welcoming for all types of people from local groups to vacationers. We felt safe and comfortable and slept so well to the sound of the waves. The patio furniture allowed us to lounge and relax and also look at the beautiful stars at night. Sunset and sunrise on the beach and the camp is a short drive down a road that turns off the main highway. Only about 10 min from the local town where you can get food, walk around etc. Overall this was the perfect place to stay and I recommend it for those who love camping and being in nature and great for families and big groups or couples. They even have couples massage. This is a priceless experience and a REAL beachfront stay. If you want to be in a spotless hotel w air-conditioningand someone cleaning your room and all that, go pay 600 a night and you still won't get the beach view and gorgeous experience of this unique tucked away treasure of this island . Thank you for the privilege to stay here and thank you for keeping the land natural and giving discounts and supporting local folks in the ways you do.

I have been staying at Kumu camp on and off since I arrived in Kauai and there's absolutely no where in the world like it!! It is absolutely beautiful and the accommodations are beautiful and affordable. The management is great and they offer morning coffee !!! I would definitely recommend that you give this campground a visit if you are ever in Kauai.

We loved our stay here! We rented a bungalow for $90 a night. We could see the oven waves crashing from our bed and enjoyed listening to the waves all night. There was a cool breeze (we stayed in March) that kept us comfortable inside the bungalow, as well as a deck with old patio furniture. The bed was comfortable- even fitting (though barely) my 6'2 husband. What a great way to experience the island at an affordable rate & w/o living out of a tent (not easy to do). It's also worth noting the water in the showers (while shared) was warm & facilities clean. Thanks for a great Aloha experience. Props to Donna & her hubby for being 5 star hosts as well!

Today's flat but waves can be a great beach break all sand bottom be respectful of locals but they are cool if you are.

Between good surf, hot showerssss, great camp host, and cheap spot to camp, Kumu camp is one of my favorite camp sights!!! Thank you!! See you next year for sure!!

I loved the camp ground and location but unfortunately didn't have the best experience. I arrived to find tree trimmers cutting down most of the trees. With no prior notice from the camp, the tree trimmers had to tell me I wasn't allowed to checkin until after 5pm and would need to leave the next morning at 8am. Ok I get that there were safety issues with trees but would have been nice to get notified in advance. The staff offered a refund but we were not able to find an alternative place to stay. This is a great location if you're expecting to camp and have come prepared, but not if you're expecting an AirBnB type experience for the tents or yurts.

Kumu Camp + Garrett came thru in a pinch! We had to end our trek on Kalalau Trail early due to rain. Called Garrett around 5pm checked into our Tentalow at 8pm. Clean sheats, ocean view, and a bed! We slept with the sound of waves crashing and woke with the roosters. Garrett came by the next morning for payment. We asked for the trash to be emptied and refreshed as there were maggots in there- handled. We bought fire starters at Home Depot and had a great fire, dips in the ocean, and camp food. There's no electricity in the Tentalow but our camping headlamps were enough. Windows open to let sunlight in. Bathrooms also have no electricity, but are totally sufficient and like our campground bathrooms. This was a great find and so relaxing to chill at!

Named after a pillar in the community who came to Kauai in the late 19th century, Lydgate Beach Park is 62 acres, with the Lydgate Park pathway encompassing 2.5 miles, a small part of the much larger Ke Ala Hele Makālae costal trail. There is plenty of parking, with both dedicated surface lots and street parking on the paved road. We immediately noticed surfers on electric surfboards out pretty far, even on this windy day. At the northern part of the park is where most people gather, close to modern facilities and a manned lifeguard station and a large covered event area with plenty of parking. Closer to the shore, we saw a seal just lying on the land, bathing in the sun, completely ignoring the people milling by. The very large safe man-made swimming/tide pools are great for the kekei and others, with constant refreshing of sea water over the lava rocks. There are picnic tables nearby as well with a lot of green space. My favorite feature are the man-made protected swimming pools, What I loved about it was how spread out everything was, with so many amenities. It just never felt crowded, even if a lot more people came. I had reservations made ahead of time to hike the famed Kalalau Trail 2 miles to Hanakapi'ai Beach and another 2 miles to Hanakapi'ai Falls. Upon driving to the Kalalau Trailhead, I entered Ha'ena State Park. I thought to myself, "oh, wow, cool, I didn't even know Kalalau Trail was within a state park!". Now, lol, after parking my car and reviewing the Kalalau Trail hiking guidelines, it was time to venture over to Hanakapi'ai Beach. Not even 1 minute into the trail, there was a clear sign stating I was now entering Na'Pali Coast State Wilderness Park. What??? But I thought Kalalau Trail was part of Ha'ena SP?! So both? What's the difference between Ha'ena SP and Na'Pali Coast SP? I guess the only thing to do is venture over to Google and search for the answer... The only reasonable solution I discovered on Google is Ha'ena SP hosts the parking lot for Kalalau Trailhead. But, once you start hiking on Kalalau Trail land, you're officially now entering and located within Na'Pali Coast boundaries. And with this info...I believe there are more options for activities within Ha'ena State Park, although I never got around to do any exploring. Now, if you're specifically visiting here for the Kalalau Trail, I'm convinced it's Na'Pali Coast territory, lol. Finally, trying to get to the bottom of this strange mystery, is when visiting Kokee State Park on the opposite side of the island of Kauai, most of the overlooks and lookout points there showcased the Na'Pali Coast. But I guess for Kokee SP, you're not actually inside Na'Pali Coast State Park land, you're just admiring the views and sceneries of the Na'Pali Coast from high above. Lol, yes...maybe I should have been better prepared ahead of time. With all this said...let me quickly return to the Kalalau Trail and provide a few highlights about the experience and what you can expect inside Na'Pali Coast State Wilderness Park... - While hiking to Hanakapi'ai Beach, a lot of the beautiful Na'Pali Coast setting will be revealed. There were moments to take a break from the trek to appreciate the landscape. - When the clouds went away and the sun shined, the coastline illuminated the Pacific Ocean waters. - You'll also capture a vantage point of Kauai's lush green island vegetation and rain forest appearance. In total, that's what I believe made Na'Pali Coast State Wilderness Park rewarding. It's hiking among nature until Kauai's colorful coast comes into appearance. The surroundings exude that vintage, tropical, Hawaiian image that tourists anticipate when visiting. At the time of visiting Kauai, I found it difficult to understand whether I was hiking Kalalau Trail within Ha'ena SP or Na'Pali SP. After completing some detailed internet research, I'm confident the popular hike is connected with Na'Pali. And with that understanding, Na'Pali Coast is a winning state park.

Right along The Sheraton Kaua'i Resort Villas where I was staying, I haven't had a day-long beach day for awhile, and I really needed a day just to recharge, refresh, and regenerate my body, mind, and soul. Having been ranked as one of the top beaches in the U.S. over the years, was there anything to poo-poo about Poipu Beach!? EXPERIENCE The word "poipu" in the Hawaiian language meant "crashing waves" and was actually two beaches in one. A "tombola" (known as Nukumoi Point) separated the two bays, and in this case it was a narrow sand spit that extended from the shore to an island. This particular area was a favorite spot for endangered napping Hawaiian monk seals. The area on the western side of the beach was a favorite for beginner bodyboarders while small waves broke gently on the shallow sandbar created a fun area for children to play. The area on the eastern side of the beach was a lava rock-protected and shallow spot for swimmers and another play area for families with small children. On this comfortable sunny day, what was initially a quiet beach progressively got crowded and noisy as the day wore on. I swam for hours back and forth past the shorebreak along the coast, took breaks to drink water and eat a snack, napped, read, and then went back out with snorkel gear in hand. An exhausting exhilarating stress-free day - perfection! SERVICE Specifically on this section of the beach, there weren't any bathrooms nor lifeguard stations. Generally speaking, there weren't any facilities whatsoever except for what the adjacent Sheraton Kaua'i Resort Villas may offer. It was a completely open public beach - 'nuff said. PARKING (Varied; N/A this instance) I had no vehicle, so I simply walked from my room. However, there was a nightly $40.00 fee for guests who stayed at the Sheraton Kaua'i Resort Villas if they parked on the property, and there might've been some free parking along the many nearby roads and streets. Make sure to carefully read any posted signs. ATMOSPHERE, DÉCOR, AMBIENCE I made a spot directly out past the middle opening from the resort's pool and the sand, the beach was clean and smooth, somewhat spacious, and fairly empty early-on but no shady trees to deflect the sunlight. There was a lone monk seal https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=120&select=xDFNXkdOMhOO9W7Nv7YtuA which was a protected specie, so people must please stay away. Sizable waves were much further out, this beach was perfect for light water activity (no real surf breaks while snorkeling was better once you got considerably past the shore break). No benches, chairs, or tables, so bring your own chairs or towels to lay or sit on. Obviously, there was plenty of natural lighting with only the glowing stars left to guide you when nighttime came. There were no TVs nor any background music except for any electronic device you brought along with you such as your mobile phone. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=120&select=GN-CeJWbv9VNt_FU7MhmDg ATTIRE Totally casual, so I would normally be in a t-shirt, boardshorts, and flip-flops. OVERALL Poipu Beach was another little piece of island heaven which I hoped would stay that way. Online research culled many articles and reviews of this beach that also alluded to what I experienced, so none of this was a secret. However, on this given weekend, I was thankful for the peacefulness and solitude. I found complete value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above (TOTAL paid experience was around $0.00 BEFORE any discounts and/or tip). And, there was no need for funds of any kind which included my credit card of choice... AMEX! 5.0 STARS

My wife and I visited on Day 4 of our Kauai vacation in the early afternoon, and continued to understand why it is so popular with tourists. There is usually plenty of free parking, but on this day, the past week's rains had flooded one of the parking lots, so there were not as many spots. My wife still found a good spot though, and we walked the short distance to the shoreline. There is a protected man-made wading area towards the east of the beach. It is easy to wade out to the lava rock retaining wall, with the water being maybe 3 feet there. There are facilities and lifeguards in the area. One of their jobs was to keep folks from getting too close to 4 sea turtles that were sunning on the sand near that area.

Even if you're only hiking to the waterfall, you're still required to pay $40 per person just to enter the park. And I have a lot of questions about that. 1. We booked the earliest possible shuttle and paid for it, but we ended up leaving 15 minutes late because we were waiting for other people -- which meant we completely missed sunrise. 2. The park itself is dirty. The restrooms are in terrible condition, and there wasn't even toilet paper. You're charging $40 for entry and can't provide the absolute basics? Don't even get me started on the lack of water stations or hand sanitizer near the bathrooms. All of this is standard in California state and national parks, and they don't charge anywhere near this much. 3. On the way in, we were told about drop-off and pick-up locations along the route. In reality, the shuttles basically never stop there. We got off at one of those spots to grab coffee and then couldn't get back on -bus after bus just drove past us. After waiting for an hour, one shuttle finally stopped to drop off a passenger, but there wasn't enough space for the two of us. So yes, when leaving the park, they don't even plan to leave room to pick people up. Be prepared to walk 5 miles. Of course, the views are incredible, and even with this level of service, the park is still worth seeing. That said, I'd strongly recommend getting as close as possible to town or the beach before the park opens and then walking in on your own. Bring water, wet wipes, and refillable bottles. If you're worried about drinking the water, bring purification tablets -despite park staff insisting the water is absolutely not safe to drink. We drank it and were totally fine. Just go prepared and manage your expectations.

I'm not a super avid hiker--I hike maybe once every 2 or 3 months. My coworkers are pretty experienced hikers, so I found myself out of my league on this advanced hike! You can do portions of the trail or the whole 11 miles all the way to Kalalau. The most common thing to do it hike to 2 miles into the beach, where the trail head for Hanakapiai waterfall is. These first 2 miles have pretty intense elevation changes, so pack lightly. The falls is an additional 2 miles in off of the main trail. If you keep going, you need to get permits from this site: https://camping.ehawaii.gov/camping/all,c-search.html At around the half-way point between the trailhead and Kalalau, you'll cross Hanakoa stream, which is the start of the trail to Hanakoa Falls. The trail was marked with pink flags when we went, but I don't expect those to last forever. There's also a camping grounds and composing toilet at this point, for those who want to hang around here. I'd recommend bringing some bug spay or at least a mosquito net if you're planning to set up camp. If you're hiking to Kalalau, grab at least a couple of liters of water at Hanakoa, because there's no guarantee of water sources beyond this. We crossed a few small streams, but they were pretty sparse and might not be flowing if there's no rain. Next is where the trail got INTENSE and my mettle was really tested. Up until this point, the trail was difficult but at least I would consider it totally safe. Beyond Hanakoa falls, you better be comfortable with heights, have some good hiking boots, and have a well-balanced pack. There are points where you're walking along a narrow ledge with nothing to hold on to with the wind whipping in your face. My coworkers were fine with this portion, but I found myself thinking, "if I die here, I'm gonna be PISSED!" My coworker appropriately named this portion "Mordor" because of the volcanic rock and impending sense of doom. After you cross Mordor, you're home free in terms of safety, but you still have a couple more miles to go. Once you get to Kalalau, you can set up camp in the trees, in the caves, or on the beach. There's a waterfall where you can shower (use only biodegradable soaps!) and a composting toilet. It was such a relief to finally get there! I set up tent and immediately crawled in for an hour nap before I arose to the smell of camp food and whiskey. I highly recommend this hike for those who are avid hikers, but definitely caution those who are just beginners like me. Do your research!

What a beautiful, secluded beach! My girlfriend and I paddled out with Kayak Kauai and spent the…read morenight sleeping under the stars. There are toilets and plenty of places to set up tents. Also, there is a small waterfall which is good for taking a quick shower in. You can also hike to this beach along the Kalalau trail, but we'd definitely recommend the kayak as you can bring more equipment and it's much easier on your body. The people arriving by foot looked completely exhausted. Make sure you get a recreational map and hike up to the pool in the valley. There are a few twists and turns in the trail, but just try to follow the stream...

I wanted to make this review cause the photos posted on here does zero justice to how beautiful this place really is! The bathrooms and hot shower houses were clean and it felt really good to have it available! The place is also secured. There were staff on site in case we had questions, Tara was very helpful in answering all my questions! We camped at oama left and we had oama right neighbors. It wasn't that bad of a distraction at all, there was a lot of space available for both of us. For this campsite you have to pay for a minimum of 12 campers, but it wasn't too bad considering it's a big space for tents and tables. 2 picnic tables were already provided so that was good! The hot showers were a great touch, after a long day. The beach was walking distance, we overnight fished and had a great time. Some of the rules: there are activities but they are available for ala cart purchase, there is a pool there but you have to rent a lifeguard, you can't have day visitors come by, you're given wristbands for the stay. There are also assigned parking stalls per camp site, we had 3 for ours. Will definitely be booking this place in the future! It's a really nice getaway...

There are bathrooms and hot showers and we always have a great time. The swimming in the area is not the best. Lots of reef in the shoreline but you can walk a little ways down and have better swimming spots. The only downside to the location is the parking lot is far so lugging your things gets exhausting. There is an entrance closer on the other side but we are not allowed to use it. Bathrooms are also extremely far and is a nightmare for your early morning or late night bathroom needs. Every time we've been there, parking was a mess. You're assigned a parking spot for your site but no one follows the rules. Also not enough parking. Our site allows 4 stalls but has a 10 person max. We are 5 couples, total 10 people which means 5 cars. All things aside, we love this location and will definitely be back but I would love to see improvements with a second bathroom on the other side as well as parking or drive in options for offloading and unloading.
