I've had Kumo for lunch twice now (once delivered and once there). Both times I was really happy with my order. It's nice to have a quality sushi go-to that isn't as pricey as Sakura Bana (next door). I'm a fan of their salad dressing which seems like it has a sesame base vs. the traditional carrot ginger dressing. The fish is nice and fresh and we were even given a complimentary tempura appetizer. I would definitely work Kumo into your mix of sushi destinations. read more

My mom and I just ordered Kumo for dinner through doordash. She ordered a california roll and I ordered the avocado roll. When the food arrived the california roll didn't look right, it was not cut up and shaped like a cone, so we called the restaurant to make sure we got the right item. They had made us a hand roll california roll, we told them that was not what we ordered and the woman proceeded to tell us that was what was submitted on her end. On the receipt from the restaurant it looked like she input it as a hand roll but the door dash website it didn't say anything about the hand roll and there were separate options that offered hand roll but they were not laughed on our door dash receipt. She continued to blame it on the website and wouldn't own up to the mistake. Mistakes happen and I understand that but it was the fact that she just kept running with her lie and didn't offer any resolutions. Also just to fill you in the avocado roll was the worst one i've ever had, i had to throw half of it away it was just bad. Dined in Friday, May 8, 2015. Three friends joined me- I was super excited for a night on the town. Arrived and stood for approximately 5 minutes without being greeted. Finally a waitress sat us, still no greeting and scurried away. Approximately 10 minutes went by, at this point we are quite thirsty and no one has acknowledged us. Took the initiative and got up to alert the host that no one came over to our table yet. She came over to get our order (at this point we gave her drink and entree orders because we didn't know if anyone would show up to our table, at all). About 25-30 minutes went by and no food was served- or any attention from our waiter (not that we even had one to begin with- since the host took our order) to acknowledge the fact that we still didn't get our food. Had to get up AGAIN- to ask where our food was because it was getting late. About 5 minutes later they served myself and 2 friends .... But never brought food to our other friend. The best part, the friend that they didn't serve had ordered sushi... The rest of us had ordered noodle dishes. Interesting... Right. Does it take longer to make a sushi roll verse multiple noodle dishes? Well, When you forget to make the sushi roll- indeed it will! Therefore, had to get up a 3rd time to tell them we were halfway done with our meal and our dear friend had no food. So finally they brought over the sushi when we were all done eating and my friend was livid- they said they didn't want it because they completely forgot their order. Finally- the end was near, thank the lord. Of course it was another long wait for a check. Once the check arrived at our table, we told the waitress the service was terrible- but of course she didn't say anything and continued to clean our table. I guess ignoring customers who are speaking to you is one way to run a business. What a horrible experience- honestly felt like a chore, and very aggravating. Seriously- left such a bad taste in my mouth when I think of the place, and I could never imagine giving them a second chance. I actually felt that I was bothering them by dining there. If you don't mind being ignored and waiting forever- I definitely recommend it! Otherwise, steer clear of this place. I know that this place is not Japanese owned, like Sakura Bana next door and that kind of kept me away. Until yesterday, desperate for a sushi fix , SB was closed. We saw 20% off cash only which slightly bothered me but we ate there nonetheless. Was very surprised. The fish was very fresh, I don't eat raw except for tuna, but I must say it was excellent quality, and my hubs sashimi he liked more than SB. I got the 3 roll deal, boston which had too much lettuce, shrimp tempura and tuna. Enjoyed them very much, came with soup and salad, not as good as SB, but almost. The best part was when the bill came it was cheap!! Paid cash, got the discount, it was like 10 bucks each plus tax and tip. Such a deal , we will be back. Got to watch the sushi chefs at work and even though they're not Japanese, they were very skilled at what they were doing with the knife and a cucumber. They were very nice and talkative and I found out they're Malaysian, which is fine by me. read more

I went there yesterday @ 3.50 and the restaurant wasn't open, they were opening at 4pm. When we went inside I saw their chefs sleeping on the seating area. I ordered California roll, salmon and spicy tuna roll. the food came in 5 minutes which surprised me because they had just opened so how could they prepare them so fast. But i was getting late to school so I just grabbed the food and left. The rolls weren't fresh, falling apart. I couldn't even eat the spicy tuna, and I felt sick after couple hours. Ugh. Went here on a recommendation from a local acquaintance. There was nothing good about the meal. The fish was just ok. But the worst part was the rice. It was dry and borderline crunchy in some spots. It did not stick together well and when I dipped it in my soy sauce, it fell apart leaving me with just the fish. Also beware of things they list as "Market Price". It was $8 for a piece of uni the size of my thumbnail. If you do decide to try it, as others have said make sure you bring cash so you get the discount. Because the meal certainly will not be worth full price. read more

After waiting around for at least an hour past the estimated time for delivery and trying to give the driver directions three times, the driver tells me he sees the location but cannot find the entrance so he is going back to the restaurant. This restaurant has been my go-to sushi spot for a while. Walking in to have lunch a few months ago, I came to find the employees sleeping in the booths used for service, clearly the door was accidentally left open during a group nap time (feet and heads on the dining tables), taking place in an eating establishment. Gave me the creeps and I figured I just wouldn't go back. Tonight, I caved and placed a deliver order for a few rolls of sushi and gyoza. The order was supposed to arrive 45min to an hour later. An hour and 15 min later I called to locate my order (now 8:30) which was already out for delivery. 20 minutes passed before I called again, only to be told that the driver was not answering his cell phone. A grand total of just over 2 hours after I placed the order, it arrived. Sadly, it seems no one at Kumo is managing the customer service or relations end, and I can assure you I will not be giving this restaurant another chance. read more

I had some time to kill on a Friday afternoon, and I was craving sushi, so I decided to grab a light snack. First the good. Sitting at the sushi bar, they offered me a small, tempura like appetizer for free. It was delicious and we were off to a great start. Shortly thereafter, the sushi arrived. The presentation was beautiful and the sushi looked very fresh. Now the bad. I went to pour soy sauce from the dispenser into my little bowl when the soy sauce and something that was not liquid poured out. I figured it was probably a piece of rice but upon further examination, I realized it was a fruit fly. So I grabbed another bowl to pour soy sauce and this time using a different dispenser with soy sauce, I poured out more soy sauce. To my dismay, fruit flies came out from the second dispenser. I was absolutely repulsed and called over the waitress who said "I'm sorry." At this point, I should have just left the restaurant but I didn't. The waitress returned with a more air tight bottle of soy sauce and I reluctantly poured it out. Finally there were no fruit flies. I ate the sushi, which was decent. I asked for the check and wanted to see if they would deduct anything from my bill, which they did NOT. I paid without saying anything and as I left, I asked to speak with the manager. I expressed my disappointment about having fruit flies in the soy sauce to which she replied, "We're a restaurant and its summer." REALLY????? Its great that she realizes that she works at a restaurant and what season it is. Perhaps she should realize the power of lack of customer service and satisfaction and word of mouth!!! She begrudgingly deducted 20% off my bill (which in my opinion the meal should have been free). I'm not the type of person who ever causes a scene in a restaurant, so I just didn't make a big fuss. But the reality is, I do not recommend anyone going to this restaurant. Obviously, I won't ever return, unless in my next life I come back as a fruit fly. read more

I agreed to re-order at 7:03 PM provided they could deliver in 30 minutes since I had been inconvenienced for over an hour. They refused to guarantee any deliver time. I ordered for the very first time. Honestly speaking it was the 20% discount that caught my eye on the menu. To make a long story short..... I ordered sushi rolls. 2 out of the 8-9 rolls I ordered were really old. Let me explain..... Hard and stale rice. The rice was falling off the role ( indication that its dry and old). I serously hope and pray that they did not give me a customers unfinished sushi roll and then resold it to me. Worst case scenerio! OMG. This may justify the discount. They also give a 50% discount during the week for lunch if paid in cash. This is not a good sign and shows that the business is failing. This is not normal. You get what you pay for! Finally, I will never order food from them again. I can understand if one 1-3 pieces of the sushi roll just was not done correctly but then the entire rolls? There are much better sushi places in Ridgewood that are fresh as can be such as "Gen". Its not cool serving old food. I hope that the owner or someone from the staff reads these comments. And hopefully they understand that people are noticing the quality of thier sushi specifically. I have never oredered anything else so I dont know. This may have been a really bad "one off". I dont know! Kumo really gives Japanese restaurant a bad image and especially kind of insults the Ridgewood NJ area. Ultimately they lose! Me and my GF go to it at least once a month and the chefs/waitresses remembered us since the 2nd visit and gave us a complimentary dish of fried white fish. Very good and reliable food and the service is amazing. My cup of tea never got cold or half empty. My boyfriend and I have been diehard Gen fans for the longest time but tonight we decided to try somewhere new. We thought the decor at Kumo seemed neat and the prices were alright so we decided to head in. We ordered a seaweed salad, spicy salmon rolls, and a "snow dream" roll (spicy tuna, tobiko, crunch, no rice, wrapped in soy paper, topped with white tuna and eel sauce) ad we were blown away! Every thing was extremely fresh and presented very nicely. The salmon rolls had what we call the "ideal rice to fish ratio." Very little rice and tons of filling. It was a pleasant change from most sushi joints that try to short-change you buy using loads of rice and barely any fish. The snow dream roll was unique and delicious. The waitstaff was pleasant and attentive too. We both decided that we might have to give up Gen for this place! Free delivery doesn't sound too bad either! read more

Overall pretty fresh and tasted good, especially for the price. It was difficult to park in Ridgewood though midweek during these hours. I thoroughly enjoyed a dinner here last night. I don't eat sushi but I do love teriyaki dishes. I had the chicken teriyaki for an entree and the chicken tempura as an appetizer. Both were delicious. The chicken was moist and tender and the portions were plentiful. The rest of my dinner party had sushi and noodle dishes which they all seemed satisfied with. Shame Shame on you! My husband and I both ordered a green salad which came with very little dressing. I kindly asked our waitress for a LITTLE extra dressing. Our meal was fine, but when the bill arrived she charged us a $1 extra for salad dressing. I told her on the menu it does not state we would be charged and we only needed an extra tablespoon or so. She asked the manager who would not budge. So instead of eating the dollar she lost 2 customers. I told her we would NOT come back, but she didn't seem to care. Never would I go back or recommend. There are plenty of delicious Japanese restaurants to go to in Ridgewood Just walk down 2 doors to Sakura Bana, which is what we will do next week. Ordered here for the first time recently. Usually I get Sakura. Kumo wasnt half bad. Their ginger dressing gives Sakura's a run for its money, I must say! I got an eel avocado and the 2013 roll. Both were good, but I felt they were pretty small rolls. I wasnt blown away by the food but wasnt disappointed in any way either. I would probably order from here again, especially since they delivery to my town and Sakura wont. read more

Eep! Terrible experience. Their website and their door said they were open till 10, I walked in at 9:25 while my mother and nephew were parking (they came in at 9:35). The front hostess was very rude, said they were closing at 10- okay- that was 35 minutes away. Sat down, ordered some food immediately (before my family walked in) to be considerate. The meal was so rushed they put the food on the table before they bothered to take our menus or bring us water or soy sauce. The entire staff stared us down while we were there, they took our plates while we were still eating (literally picking up food with chopsticks). The servings were teeny, the tuna dumplings were very good but the experience was totally hostile. My mother and I have both worked as servers- we've never seen customers treated like this (and we ordered over $80 in food). We would have been (and we were) gone by 10:03. They should say they close at 9:30 rather than let customers in and then treat them like this. read more
