I had the the Tonkotsu Ramen, and it was exactly what I needed. The Tonkotsu wasn't overly intense or packed with umami; instead, it was a cozy, comforting bowl of ramen--simple, yet satisfying. I also tried one of the lunch specials, the Two Sushi Rolls ($13) which includes your choice of two classic sushi rolls (excludes the signature rolls). The classic rolls are nothing too adventurous, just straightforward, solid flavors. Note: the place is a small mom-and-pop shop, so check the hours. On weekdays, they close early (3:00 PM) since they need to pick up their kid from school (something my yapping mouth overlooked). read more

I am pleased to find it!! And I am pleased to have another vegetarian option! The menu indicates vegan but it doesn't make clear if the broth is vegan. I had the veg miso ramen, and added tofu. It was delicious. Service is not we typically expect in terms of friendly service. The interior is tidy and clean and well decorated for a casual experience, including rough wood chairs and benches, stools and standing options. They offer a few alcoholic beverages as well. Oh boy, where do I start The reviews are glowing and we were extremely excited for decent ramen in McKinney. Unfortunately, this place is not it. Takoyaki: this was actually edible but it was covered in a heaping tower of bonito flakes. They're supposed to be a delicate topping that dances in the steam of the fresh and delectable takoyaki but it was heaped over the takoyaki, as if to hide it instead. Spicy tonkotsu: they have spicy ramen with ground pork but not with chashu, so we had to add spicy sauce. The broth was spicy and savory but hollow. It didn't have the fat/richness that you expect from a tonkotsu broth. It was just watery. The noodles weren't good ramen noodles. I'm not even sure if they qualify. They were thin and got soggy quickly from being in the broth. The chashu was probably the best of the ramen. It might not be pork belly - maybe it was pork shoulder? But it wasn't fatty at all. Not what you'd expect from chashu. Kaarage: I don't even know if this breading is Japanese. It looks like a Long John Silver fish fillet topping. The friend who bought it didn't want to take it home so we did, and I'll feature the juxtaposition of the kaarage he got here vs the kaarage he got 15mins down the road at Mitsuwa Marketplace. Ice cream: Fluffy and tasty! But not worth $4.5. Glad we got it for free during this promotion period. Service: inattentive, lifeless. I'm wondering if the people here don't want to work here due to the abysmal quality of the food. I hope they're able to figure this out and turn this restaurant around. It definitely has potential to be better. The atmosphere (art, etc) is very nice, so I hope the food can make a turn for the better as well. Kuma is definitely a solid choice for ramen in McKinney. We recently went for a quick dinner with the fam and I will say that the atmosphere is nice. It is located in a new strip mall and has cute decor that gives off a ramen shop feel. Service-wise, I would not say it is the friendliest. We did get everything ordered and everything came out in a timely manner; however no smiles all business. I cannot say it was bad service, just lacks friendliness. Food-wise, we got the chicken karaage, which was good. It came with a mayo sauce, the chicken was tender and well fried, but could have used a touch more flavor. It was definitely underwhelming for $9. We also got a spicy salmon roll, which was not spicy and on the expensive side ($9.50) for the lack of flavor and the lower quality of salmon. Felt similar to a grocery store salmon roll. The standout was definitely the ramen. I got the spicy ramen ($13.95) and my favorite part is that they have the option of chicken chashu! I'm not a huge fan of pork chashu because of the fatty portion of the pork, which limits my protein options at a ramen shop, so this is definitely a plus for me. My husband got the tempura udon ($13.95) with extra noodles ($3), which comes with shrimp tempura, fish cakes, and scallion. Simple noodles, for a simple man. He seemed to have enjoyed it and the portion size was large enough for him to have leftovers. Also, true to what they proclaimed, I did not feel super thirsty after my meal. They claim that the ramen here is superior because the flavor is from the bone marrow simmering overnight versus using lots of sodium and/or MSG. So...moral of the story, I definitely would come back for the ramen. It was delicious and I did not need to drink 20 gallons of water when I got home. I got a rude reply from the owner of this place about my review regarding a typo on their menu. Looked at the Yelp photos of the menu, and found the exact typo I was referring to photoshopped (by someone) with the word "OR" pasted over the "AND." I think I did call this a vegetable egg roll in my original review instead of a vegetable roll - so the owner seemed to have glommed on to that part, not the actual mistake of using the word "AND" instead of "OR". We ordered for the first time last night. The Husbeast and I both got the Tonkotsu, he got edamame to go with it, and I got the vegetable spring rolls. It was AMAZING! The broth was so deep and rich in flavor, the noodles were perfect, and my vegetable spring rolls were excellent. We own a small business in McKinney, and eat the majority of our meals at the store, in between serving customers. So I don't say this lightly, it was just as good when it had to sit a while as it was when it was fresh out of the delivery bag. It was so good, we actually ordered it again tonight. He got the spicy this time, and started to say, "That's not very spicy." then suddenly coughed and his nose started running, and he said, "The prosecution **sniffle** would like **snuffle** to withdraw it's case, Your Honor!" **LOL** The servings are generous, I finished mine yesterday because I was starving, but tonight I ended up putting about half of it in the fridge for tomorrow's lunch. I can't rave enough about it. And I can tell you that the next time I'm sick, I'm ordering their broth, because it's amazing enough to stand on it's own, and I know I'll be craving soup. They do eat in and takeout; but the restaurant is a little small so make sure you plan a time when they're not as busy. The service was great all the employees are very friendly and we received our food quickly after ordering. The portion sizes are big and if you get the fried ice-cream get one for yourself because you're not going to want to share. Arrived on day 2 of opening. So excited and pleased with my neighborhood ramen shop. Check it out! Got take out which always dampens the food experience a little so I'm looking forward to dining in to enjoy it fresh out if the kitchen. Spicy ramen was mild for this heat lover, but will be pleasing to wider range of palates because it won't set your mouth on fire. Assume I can request more heat next time. Katana had such a satisfying amount of snow crab piled on. Loved that part, but salmon portion in roll was small so it got lost under all that delicious crab. Just came in here with my mother for some ramen. We came on a Monday afternoon so it was a bit empty, but the food didn't disappoint! Was excited to try a new ramen place in McKinney as the reviews were promising. Ordered the edamame, tonkotsu ramen, and spicy miso ramen. The service was horrible. Asked to substitute shrimp tempura instead of chasu in the tonkotsu ramen and the waitress told us no. We were okay with the extra charge, just didn't want the chasu in the bowl (pork meat upsets my stomach) and wanted the shrimp tempura instead, the broth was fine. Eventually she said okay...very strange. I don't think this was a difficult ask at all, and I reiterated what I was asking to make sure I was being understood. She kept pointing us to another ramen, that was more expensive. She was very pushy and rude. Also had to remind her to bring our drinks out after the ramen was already there. I also asked to add the black garlic oil to the spicy miso ramen and it wasn't added. I informed the waitress and she said she did put it in, but I neither tasted or saw the oil in my ramen. The ramen itself lacked flavor. The spicy miso was spicy because of the chili oil, but lacked any real flavor other than hot. The broth was very watery. The tonkotsu was the same.
