We used Kulas for a couple of years and the cleaning is generally fine. You just need to be prepared to pay for the exact time that you agree to--in our case it's 45 minutes for our house. You had better believe that they will not spend 1 minute longer. They'll rush to finish and literally run out the door. I am filing this complaint to document a pattern of problematic business practices, not a single isolated incident. On multiple occasions over several years, the company has failed to provide adequate advance notice of scheduled cleanings, despite representing that customers will receive at least 24 hours' notice to allow cancellation or rescheduling. When this issue has been raised, the front-office staff has repeatedly responded defensively and attempted to shift blame rather than acknowledge the failure. In the most recent incident, a front-office employee behaved in a rude and dismissive manner and stated that the company would charge me for services not rendered. There is no written contract, no disclosed cancellation policy, and no authorization for such charges. Threatening to charge a customer for services that have not been performed, without contractual basis, is deceptive and coercive. I escalated the matter to senior management and requested a written apology from the employee involved. Management refused to provide one. As a result, I am terminating the service and filing this complaint so the pattern of conduct is documented for other consumers. Desired Resolution: I am not seeking compensation. I am seeking documentation of this complaint and assurance that customers are not threatened with charges for services not performed in the absence of a written agreement. read more

When I first reached out to Kulas Maids, they stated that based on the square footage of my home it would only take 1 hour to clean. They then stated that every 15 minutes over that 1 hour would be an additional fee. Like any homeowner, I pre-cleaned the home to ensure that they would be able to vacuum, mop, and wipe down all surfaces in the 1 hour time allotment. To start, the cleaning crew arrived late to my home. Once they arrived they took additional time to setup before beginning to clean. Since they were on the clock, the first 30 minutes of cleaning was great (They cleaned the upstairs well). They then began to rush to clean the downstairs and did a terrible job. The supervisor on site then told me she hadn't started the lower level yet and that I would need to pay an additional fee for extra time to clean the lower level. At this point I was already stuck and had to pay the additional fee since they hadn't touched the lower level. After paying the fee, they simply vacuumed and left. When I called the customer service team, they rudely said there is nothing they could do, and said the crew was at my home for 1 hour and 20 minutes. She was able to track this with car data showing when the engine was turned on and off. Therefore, I was charged not only for cleaning, but the time it takes to get in and out of the car with all supplies. She stated that she only charged me for 1 hour and 15 minutes instead of the full 1 hour and 20 minutes. This is absolutely unacceptable that they expect a team of 4 to get in and out of a sedan with all cleaning supplies and begin cleaning within 5 minutes. The overall operations seems like a scam, and I would highly recommend that homeowners use other companies to avoid hidden overage fees. read more

We have used Kulas Maids twice after using another service that charged more and took a very long time in our home. We are very satisfied with this service. We are retired and do our own laundry and dishes. What we need is deep housecleaning every couple of weeks. And we have three dogs. The women who have cleaned for us so far are very hardworking and good at what they do. They arrive on time and hit the ground running. They wipe down all cabinetry, dust from top to bottom, deep clean the stove, and make the bathrooms sparkle. We have walnut floors that really need attention, between the dogs and a messy cook. They bring them back to new. Honestly, the house is spotless. We couldn't ask for more. And we love that, with 4 of them, they are done in 1.5 hours and we have our house back! Have used this service monthly for years. Called to arrange monthly this May and they said they could no longer serve us bc I made a complaint a year ago!! I have used them 10 times since then!!??? A year ago I called just to let them know that the team stayed 1:45 mins not 2 hours.. I said they did a great job I just didn't want to be charged for 2. 10 mins after I called, a year ago, my front door burst open and a Kulas team member came into our home screaming at me about how dare I call- it was shocking/ frightening. I asked ofc not to have her back. They apologized for her not ringing bell and coming in and yelling No issues since then and then last week they said they can't serve our home bc of said complaint. Honestly their service is mediocre. For 4 girls that come you'd expect more especially when my home is already clean.. First time they came they didn't make beds and ripped out my internet cable leaving me with no internet for 2 days. I work from home so it's a major inconvenience. Although they did offer a credit. The second time they came still a mediocre job. My kitchen floor looked like it was barely mopped and i had multiple things not wiped down. Mind you my home is already pretty clean it just needed a good wipe down and floors to be scrubbed that's really about it. I'm not quite sure what dog dander is, but all I know is that I need it out of my house. After finding out that my 2 yr old was extremely allergic to our dog of 9 years we found a new home for her with my in laws in Dallas. The dog that is, not my 2 yr old...although I've been tempted to ship him off to Dallas too during some recent terrible 2 moments. :). Once the dog was settled in Dallas I decided it was time for a deep cleaning. We do have a regularly scheduled cleaning lady but I wanted a crew to come in and wipe down all the walls and do all the little details that one person can't do her own. To be honest the reviews for deep cleaning services in the north shore (both on Yelp and from friends) are less than satisfactory. Basically my 2 options were kulas and perfection cleaning and I decided to try kulas first due to the Yelp reviews. They sent someone out to give an estimate. He was right on time (hooray) and did a quick tour of my house. I was expecting to pay a few thousand dollars for a deep cleaning since many people had warned me of the expense so I was surprised when he quoted me less than $300 for a crew of 4 people to come in for a deep cleaning. I clarified at least 3 times that I wanted more than a regular cleaning including wiping down all the walls. He confirmed that's what they'd do. I booked them for 1pm on a Friday and they showed up right on the dot. I was only home for a few min during the time they were there, but my nanny supervised them and said they really did get to everything. They were also flexible with working around my 2 yr olds nap- saving his room (the room that I wanted cleaned the most) for last. After they were done the house didn't look that much cleaner than it does when my regular cleaning lady comes (husband didn't even notice they had been there) but they did do the walls, baseboards, etc that she doesn't get to on a weekly basis. Considering I don't even know what dander is I'm not sure it's all gone, but hopeful most traces of the dog have been removed from the house between them, my regular cleaning lady, carpet cleaners and time passed. Overall, I'd recommend kulas before a move in or perhaps once or twice a year for an extra good cleaning. I personally prefer to have a cleaning lady that I know each week rather than a crew, but for those who don't mind having people they don't know in their house this is a good option. read more

Sadly, I have been using Kulas for 5+ years but am now going to have to look for a new service. Here are some of the reason: ~The prices have gone up exponentially the last year (3 raises in 1 year) but the service has gone downhill. In the last year alone, prices increased 25%. They upcharge people who don't get their homes cleaned at least every two weeks. Some people don't NEED every two weeks. I do monthly and that wasn't good enough for a frequent customer discount. ~No consistency: you get a different crew each time. When you ASK for a specific crew they refuse to assign them to your job - they simply tell you that you get the luck of the draw. ~Breakage/inadequate cleaning: I am at the point where I don't let the crews clean everything in my house - for example I do not let them clean wooden blinds because they take rags and beat the hell out of the wood blinds, knocking the plugs out of the bottom and/or causing scratches in the wood blinds. They clean tile floors and throw the area rugs/door mats back down before the floors have dried. I went out and bought a Dyson vacuum for the carpet areas of the house because they use what looks like a floor vac on carpets and have snagged various parts of the carpet with their vacuum. There have been times where they have broken other things, and they don't tell me and just leave the breakage there for me to find. What these ladies don't realize is that while it is a big house, there is only 1 person living in it so no one else to blame for breakage. In short, I have had enough and will be interviewing other services. If you are looking for a quick 1 time clean than I would suppose this company might be adequate for your needs. If you live cleanly, take pride in your home and simply want 1 or 2 times a month, I would look elsewhere. read more

Never, ever, EVER again. They cleaned 2 bathrooms, 1 kitchen, 1 bedroom, 1 living room. Modest sizes, all hardwood floors. They did a good job cleaning, charged me $245 - it was a fair price for the condition of the place, and the crew of 4 stayed 2 hours. I can't complain about the cleaning - after all, they DID clean it. And I was so glad to have the place finally cleaned thoroughly, I gave each of the crew a $20 tip (yes, an additional $80, totaling $325). I told them at the outset, that I didn't care if everything was sparkling, as I'm a single guy and the place hadn't had attention in quite a while. I told them I wouldn't nit-pick; I just needed the dirt and grime taken care of. My intention was to get a deep clean, then have a regular service. BUT... I later went to get a flashlight off of the fridge - it wasn't there; there used to be two flashlights there. There were cookbooks, and medications on top of the fridge - all thrown out in the trash. I went rummaging through the trash and found the items. They ripped a picture of my daughter off the wall in the kitchen and threw it away. The picture was attached so well, that they literally ripped several layers of paint off leaving a gaping hole where it used to be. I found the picture in the trash. I took pictures, but there doesn't seem to be a place to upload it here. There was a sign above the threshold - one of those "eat here and get gas" metal reproductions - that was gone. They had placed it behind the fridge. They had found a cradle for a portable land-line phone that had fallen behind the bed. They threw it away, and left the power adapter still plugged in to the outlet, but the cradle was gone! And I tipped them like an unsuspecting fool! I called. I spoke with Susan. She *sounded* appalled, but when I explained that they had thrown away the medications, she said "I just want to make sure you're okay without the medications". That's when I knew that she was being insincere - like, "oh, your health is my concern". I assure you that I did not sound so feeble, nor did I emphasize the implications at the loss of the medication. I DID emphasize that if they saw something of value, shouldn't they ASK me if I wanted it tossed? I don't think I should have to hawk them cleaning - there is a level of common sense. Funny thing is, there is a knife block with knives in it on the fridge - they didn't throw that away, but they threw away cookbooks, flashlights, and meds? Ripping pictures off the wall? This was just stupid. Susan even agreed that this was beyond what one should have to explain. I even told her, if there was a language barrier, I could understand, but when you see valuable things, wouldn't one ask? She agreed that my expectation was not out of line. But the kicker of it all is that Susan wanted to document everything so that they could do a better job of training. I implied that these are the sorts of things you can't train for - you can't fix stupid. My cookbooks? My grandmothers cookbook? Seriously? I'm a flashlight fanatic - I had two flashlights worth well over $50 each for emergencies on the fridge. A picture affixed so well that the paint ripped down to the drywall? You can't mistake that for trash. They made no attempt at restitution. I mean, I didn't want another cleaning unless they could assure me a top notch team to clean. Susan told me that the only way I could get anything other than a randomly selected team was if I agreed to bi-monthly cleaning. Seriously? I get it that sometimes you get the crew that are just substandard. And I wasn't plan on writing them off until I heard what they had to say. Well, they didn't escalate the issue, I never received another call from anyone, and they made no attempt to demonstrate that this was a fluke by offering a top notch crew. I even told her that I'm not looking for a free cleaning - I cannot be sure I can have them in my house again. She said that she was sorry to hear that. I don't think she was really sorry - I think that she didn't know what to do. What about the repair to my kitchen wall? If she had said "let's send another crew next time at a discount", I would have said, no discount necessary, just make sure it's not the "one flew over the cuckoo's nest" crew. I really would have given them another shot. So, when things go well, people give nice reviews - but what differentiates the winners from the also-ran's, is how they handle their difficulties. In that department, this company FAILS. I swear to all things holy and unholy that I will share this experience with everyone I know in Highland Park, where I've lived for 30 years. read more

the crew that i had did a WONDERFUL job they wore masks, gloves, and booties as soon as they came into my home. they cleaned my apartment so well, it still smelled good the next day. these women were professional, only would speak to me if there were any issues or to let me know they were leaving. one of my dogs ran out into the living room, to sniff them and say hello, and the girls just laughed and kept working instead of getting distracted or scared. 10/10 would recommend to any friends or family members. the women who work at the office are very informative and helpful as well. thank you, Kulas Maids!! read more

The first time they came it was wonderful. The second time the cleaners didn't even clean the floors in my master bath, not even a light brushing. Normally I wouldn't look, but the rest of the house wasn't cleaned well. I took videos of the dust and dirt on the floors and sent them to Kulas. They did come out and have my bathrooms redone. It was uncomfortable. I will not use them again. It was $210 to clean my house and I had to call and wait for a crew to come out again. They did try to make the situation right. The girls always come in a group of 4 and are very respectful and make sure everything is done properly and always ask me to walk thru the home before they leave to make sure everything was done. I love that they use green products in the home as they do not give off a chemical smell and that is important to me as i have children in the home. Despite numerous negative online reviews, I gave them a chance anyway. After 5 times of hiring their service, I'm now looking for a different cleaning company at this point. The main reason is dealing with the company is an extremely difficult and unpleasant experience. They are rude, abrupt and have no concept of customer service. When I hang up the phone each time I ask myself why I bother. The crew does show up on time, which is good. The cleaning depends on the crew you get, so it's pot-luck. Usually only 1-2 out of 4 are hardworking, the others are not. (One crew scratched my tub, which I wasn't happy about). Overall nothing special. The main reason I would not recommend this company is there are too many other companies out there who would value having your business. read more

I have been a Kula's Maids client for 4-5 years and highly recommend Kula's for their outstanding cleaning, professional communication and thorough follow-up. The crews meticulously clean from top to bottom/corner to corner using 'green' products that leave a clean, non-chemical smell with major shine. The bathrooms shine and the floors are spotless. We hired Kulas to help us clean the house for a post-vaccination grandparent visit and it was incredible! Cleaning support is a luxury for us and doesn't happen very often, but it was worth every penny. I called for an appointment on Friday and they sent a team of four people on Saturday morning. My house was a disaster due to a plumbing leak and plumbers trudging throughout house in snowy and salty boots, and I was going out of my mind. My usual cleaner canceled and I called kulus in the hopes they could come last minute. They didn't have anything for today but I begged and they squeezed me in. So they showed up on time and for the 1 hour I booked the 4 women worked hard and were very thorough. They cleaned areas most ignore and my floors have never been so clean.
