We had the house wine and a gin and tonic for our drinks, and they were all quite satisfactory. The house salads are delicious: an assortment of greens (mesclun, iceberg) and raw yellow + red peppers and sliced carrots and red onions, all cupped into a long cucumber. It was so creative/inventive! They made a special linguine with tomato sauce and mushrooms for me, it was so delicious, as the pasta was served al dente and the sauce was so good it needed nothing else. Also had a taste of the fish dish with a saffron and raisin cream sauce. It sounds gross but it was absolutely ridiculous. If I come back, I would order that and suggest you do, too. Indulged and got some chocolate and pistachio gelato to finish, which was served in a chocolate cookie bowl. Had an espresso as well, perfect sidekick to end the meal. They also offered us an iced lemon drink at the end to cleanse our palettes. I would recommend this place to anyone in the area or folks who are visiting. Its so nice that the owner comes around to ask you how everything is, and all the waiters are spouting out Italian phrases. It's worth every penny! Enjoy...

Olivia (events…read moremanager) was beyond competent in assessing our needs, she listened carefully to what we were trying to achieve for our wedding and suggested the best package, and there was no 'up-selling' or a sense of belt and braces that I was getting with other hog roast caterers. She even suggested a great unconnected place to source our drinks from!! We were kept in close communication right up to the special day. On arrival, the chefs were prompt, friendly and got straight to it, I felt relaxed enough to let them carry on with their work whilst I travelled to London to get married. On our return to Sussex, Olivia and another staff member were present and waiting, as previously agreed with champagne at the ready. All through the night, my guests kept complimenting the staff on their diligence and professionalism. The food was absolutely delicious and the vegetarian paella was to die for.my only complaint is that, as I am based in London, I wont be able to use gastro again any time soon!! Well done guys and thank you so much for making our day special. Steph and Tim.

I may just have found a new favourite place to do my food shopping in Brighton!…read more Thorne's is a grocers, butchers, bakers, deli and wine merchant all under one roof, with the added bonus of a cafe and restaurant upstairs, as well as a room showcasing work from local artists - what more could one ask for in a one-stop shopping experience. All the food is locally sourced and all the staff seem keen to chat about the products they offer and where they are from. I had a great chat with the butcher (from Westdene Butchers - already highly rated on Yelp). He was happy to chat about the quality and cut of the meat, the unusual things he can get in with a little notice, and we even discussed Christmas turkeys (this seemed a little wrong on a boiling hot September day!) The cheese counter looked exceptional, the fresh breads tasty, and the fruit and veg looked fresh and wholesome. The only thing they are missing are a fishmonger - something we are surprisingly short of here by the sea. I didn't have change to peruse the cafe or the gallery, but having looked at the menu, I will definitely be back soon. This is my favourite kind of shopping experience and a great addition to the North Laines. Yay for fresh, wholesome, locally sourced food - more please!

Checked the website, breakfast til 11:30 and the essential "ring to book a table". So ring I did, only to be told, after checking with the manager, that they "don't do" reservations on Saturday's as a) previous bookers have failed to show and b) they're quite busy enough!! Shame - it's not so much about the £200+ they'd have got tomorrow, but the many hundreds they now won't get in the future, assuming they manage to stay in business for any length of time.

Cook strikes me as being a little different from the extra special, finest, taste the difference…read more.. or whatever else they're called, ready meals that supermarkets sell, one as its a little pricier, and two it looks home made. It seems to be this second point that balances out the first. It strikes me, that if you have the relatives, or some friends coming round for diner, but can't cook and need to give the impression you can, then Cook is the place to run to. Everything looks plausably home made, in the same way that some cookery books give you images of nice looking food that's not too expensive or difficult to make luring you into attempting the dish yourself. You soon find out however, that the meal in the book looked so tasty because its sitting on a granite work surface in an ornate bowl that has never even seen the inside of a sink, and has about 500 watts of light illuminating it. Style over substance.... But at least Cook has the substance, just not to the degree the price asks for if you ask me.

They had about 10 salads to choose from, most of which were vegan, and a bunch of mains, two of which were vegan. For the main, I got a decadent butter bean dish that was wonderfully flavoured, albeit quite oily. The salads were all quite intensely flavoured too, with a broccoli salad that had a nicely horseradish-dominant dressing, a tomato and bell pepper salad that was nicely dressed, and roasted sweet potatoes. Very filling and good value. I was really happy with the food. I capped off the meal with an American (£2.40), which was definitely above average for UK -- seems like the place is run by Italians, so that might be it. Super friendly and helpful staff who kindly pointed out everything that was vegan. All in all, highly recommended spot near the centre and beach.

I am unusually blessed with cake vendors in the close proximity to my workplace and Delish often gets my business. It's a slightly odd set up, they have a kitchen in their shop front, so when you go in to buy a tasty slice of carrot cake, you disturb them from their main catering work and they often have to put the electric whisk or suchlike down to serve you. In a way, it's quite pleasing - it makes you feel like your brownie is truly homemade, but at the same time it can make you feel a bit awkward. I haven't used the catering side of the business, but I can affirm the quality of their individual portions of cake, usually quite reasonably priced at around £1.50 a slice.
