This was my 3rd visit to Lateral, and I have actually never sat inside at the restaurant, but it does look lovely. We shared a couple of plates, including the chicken Caesar salad. It was so fresh and delicious. The waiter was attentive, and our food came out in a reasonable timeframe. He was also very patient with our broken Spanish.

In Spain, I still get confused about seating. "Is this place a seat-yourself place or a wait-to-be-seated place?" Sometimes it is hard to tell; therefore, to avoid an awkward encounter by making a command decision, I stand in one central place awkwardly blocking the waitress/waiter until they tell me what to do. Thank God for my wife, though, who makes the decision and just sits. Luckily, she was right. This is one of those just-sit-and-wait-for-the-waitress places. Now, before you order know that you are welcome to take a look inside at the food. Also, know that some items on the menu are not available at certain times of the day (I'm sorry but I'm still in the dark as to what those items are). Nevertheless, they have a great selection of tapas (midday snacks, translation curiosity of me). The great thing about this place is that there are zero tapas and drinks that breach the €6 mark. In fact, everything we got was under €3.75. Our most expensive item was the tortilla de patata, which was deliciously proportioned (a great ratio of runny to solid). Not only was the food and drink very cheap but it was also delicious. We tried a smorgasbord of tapas. I did not necessarily delight in all the tapas, some were just not my bag baby. However, others were definitely my bag (see pictures for details). In total, we got 6 tapas and five drinks and only paid €27. Overall, this is definitely a great spot for tapas. Whether you're out with your date or you're bringing the kids along for the ride, this little place off Calle de Serrano is perfect to break the seal on your first tapas experience. Enjoy!
This place is awesome. Highly recommend one block from Calle Serrano.

I suspected we were in for a great meal, and I was not disappointed! We were seated, and our drink orders were produced quickly. The restaurant is big, as there is an outdoor dining area, and an upstairs and downstairs dining room. We were seated downstairs, next to a display case with these little statues of an army of servers brining food. But, I did not find their noise level too bad, as we were capable of having a conversation at a normal volume. Since there were 4 in our party, we ordered a selection of their hot and cold small plates to share - ceasar salad, croquettes filled with stew meat, fried clams, and tortilla patatas. The tortilla patatas took the prize for me. Excellent, and I could have eaten more. Next came our main dishes, which we also shared - grilled hake, grilled lamb, and macaroni bolognese. Everything was excellent! We cleared the plates of everything. Amazing experience, and I highly recommend!

The shrimp are delicious and meaty (they better be for almost €60 a plate). The dish I ordered was the fish tacos, which do not look as you think they would (see the picture). Nevertheless, the were scrumptious! Chunks of deep fried fish laid on a bed of guacamole surrounded by dollops of green and white sauce make for a very surprising yet delicious dish (take my advice, try the green stuff...it's delicious!). Also, take my advice on this, the cheesecake is great. It's the perfect mixture of creamy yet firm. Lastly, if you're a gin and tonic fan they have a refreshing one just for you. They make it with Norte gin, which is now my favorite. Overall, our party of seven paid around €200 for the night. This is a great place. Great for a nice date night or special occasion. The service is superb and constant, which is a nice change for Spain, the constant part that is. If you're just visiting Madrid, go for it. You will not be disappointed and it'll be one for the books. Enjoy!

This is a spot that feels like a little bar but is actually more like a casa with some food items…read more Here, they are big on pig and there are Iberico hams located on and around the bar for easy access. If you are vegan, coming here will only piss you off. In fact, a vegan in Madrid in general is ill-advised. The setting feels historic and rustic with exposed brick and stone that appears to be centuries old. They seem to make everything (both food and drink) behind that cramped bar which explains why most of their menu items are cold, pre-made, or easy to assemble from short lists of raw ingredients. This does not mean that anything is bad. It just means it is like producing charcuterie in a dorm room bar. A large number of items involve Iberico Ham and one of the barmen is constantly shaving off thin pieces for service. In fact the freebie snack they send out from the kitchen had some Iberico ham and Manchego cheese on it which was a really nice warm up of what to expect. Over the noonish lunch hour, I was the only tourist in the place surrounded by many locals that clearly know about this spot. I liked those odds for assuring me of a genuine authentic experience. It was an accurate predictor. I'm not the most experienced when it comes to true Spanish tapas but this seemed to be a very genuine depiction of what the locals look for in a rustic Iberico ham experience. And frankly, even if it wasn't I can't find anything to really complain about. It was a cool historic setting, there was ice-cold vermouth from a tap, and I spent an hour shoving local Morcilla (blood sausage) and Iberico pig parts into my pie hole for the better part of an hour. It was a great experience any way you choose to look at it.
