It reminds me of going to the Chinese herbal doctor in China where they will meticulously gather the necessary herbs, dried plants and possibly even animal parts (I know, might sound gross) to take charge of your health and wellbeing. It is definitely different from going into your local pharmacy and getting your script filled! The staff here are always friendly and helpful, able to answer your questions and will not hesitate to show you what suits you the most. They also have a huge selection of Tiger Balm, Salonpas, herbal supplements, Zheng Gu Shui, Ching Wan Hung, Mopiko, and much much more. I tend to pick up a thing or two while I'm here, but my main attraction here is the dried seafood. For those of you who aren't familiar with dried goods, it is the world's oldest method of preserving goods and it's nutrients. They are also common ingredients in Chinese cooking and tonics, like dried shrimps, scallops, and mushrooms. One of my favorites this store offers at a moderate price are dried oysters. There are just so many items this store carries you won't miss going to other spots around town. Best of all is they have canned abalone and often have a sale! The tea leaves are also a must try. The woman working there was helpful and mentioned they have a traditional Chinese medicine doctor available. For $20 he could do a consult on any concerns you want to target and prescribe herbs/teas as needed. Just call 20 min in advance and you can be seen for $20. Inside are shelf-stable stuff like nuts, and dried seafood, etc. that you buy by the pound. They've got candy, drinks, snacks as well. My mom likes to go here because they have the cheapest price on large bags of rice, but inventory is sporadic.

My search for certain Chinese medicinal fruits & herbs led me here. There are quite a few herbal…read moremedicine stores around this block but many of them seem to be selling them openly, letting in all the germs and the dust from the streets. That seems counter productive doesn't it? Well these guys have some stuff that are in the open, but most are either inside or packed and sealed in a bag if outside. The store inside is clean as well. The products I was looking for were hong zao (jujube aka Chinese dates) and gouqi (goji berries or wolf berries) in order to make black chicken soup. Both were properly packed and looked clean. I was happy with their products and so when my wife wanted chuan bei mu (Fritillaria extract) for a Chinese pear recipe, I went back to them for it. Sure enough they had them inside, sealed tightly in a glass jar. However, they were of the smaller kind. Buying herbs can be a daunting task for a non Chinese speaker... I mean the sheer thought of going home and cooking for my wife with the wrong herbs is enough to give me nightmares ... but they actually understood my Google Translate Chinese and helped me out big time. They seem a little more expensive than some of the other ones but surely the cleanliness is worth an extra few cents. What? Don't call you Shirley? Dude you need some Chinese herbs.
