We usually head over to Mitsuwa in Edgewater whenever we want to buy specialty Japanese food goods, but figured we'd check out Sunrise Mart since we were visiting Japan Village. My husband found some vegan miso soup packets and bought a bunch of those to try. Because it was a hot summer day, we didn't get produce or anything frozen, but were happy to see they offer a good selection of both. While he was getting real food and pantry items, I perused the snack aisles and beer cases haha. While it's small in square footage, it makes the best out of the space so there's a wide variety of grocery products. I can't speak to the fish or butcher areas because we're a vegetarian household (he's vegetarian and I don't cook non-veg because of cross contamination concerns), but I thought that these sections looked good to me.

She first let me have a sample from a zip locked sandwich bag. Popped it open one bored day at work and it was instant crack in a bag. Could not stop. The store generally has a lot of preserved stuff in jars and whatnot, some peanuts also - really old school Chinatown. As we walked the back where a majority of the jars were (she mentioned it's fresh - by the pound), I was starting to get antsy... where. is. it. Tease me woman, and I'll murder you. We finally made it near the register and lo and behold, the yumminess that's all warm and fuzzy for just - get this - $8 a pound!! That's unheard of. Two pounds please!! =D Some for my mom and some for a noobie Yelper in CA who's deprived of awesome Asian snacks all her life. Obviously the lady knew and suddenly broke my heart before it started to grow, "There is no more after this batch". O_O I didn't inquire if they made the stuff themselves or was it a vendor who sells it to them, but I sincerely hope that whoever created this concoction they should def know that it's a great hit.

They specialize in a variety of jarred kimchi that you normally see in grocery stores. The price per jar is anywhere between $10-$15. They also have a weekly (changing) menu offering Korean homemade soups and lunch. I got a pork kimchi ($13 after taxes) and it was delicious. This brought up so much childhood memories of a time when my dad worked at a local Cheung Fun place in Chinatown. You feel something inside that you don't normally get when you go to a crowded / fancier restaurant. It feels like "home" in a sense. I love a small business like Kimchi Kooks Kate's Kitchen because it adds characters to the local business. :) The staff are friendly and because there is an open kitchen, you can see them make your food. I picked up a small jar of their classic white kimchi ($8.32), which I was so excited to try because white kimchi is traditionally made with pine nuts and it's difficult to find a nut-free version at supermarkets. I thought the kimchi had a pleasant tang, though it was a little savorier than I expected. The variety of banchan was also excellent-- I counted 21 different dishes as well as 4 different types of sauces. I picked up a miyeok and dubu muchim ($8.32) which was a seaweed salad tossed with firm tofu crumbles. I intended to eat it for dinner, but I finished the whole container before I got home because it was so addictive and delicious. If you have any questions, a staff member is at hand but everything is neatly labeled with an explanation of ingredients. Their kitchen is open on Wed-Sun so I'd love to return to try a weekend special, which rotates on a weekly basis. Kimchi Kooks is located a short walk away from Owl's Head Park and the pier, so I would definitely recommend grabbing a few banchan to-go if the weather is nice! PS- A staff member kindly let me know that all the kimchis are nut-free and that if you bring the glass jar back, you get $1 off your next purchase.
