I really wanted to like Kroll's. It has such a crazy vibe - a sign on the table tells you to push a button on the wall when you're ready to order. Because our server was in training, one push produced two servers - what a deal! The cheese curds were great, a mix of cheddar and white cheese. I did not love the butter burger. I was also surprised to see it arrive wrapped in paper and not on a plate. The place is huge and I imagine they must host a crowd on game days! It's probably not fair to judge a place on just one meal...if I had more time in the area, I may have tried again. read more

This is a staple of the Green Bay area (I'm not from the area), so I was told by the people who invited us. We were there for a casual meal and hangout after a funeral service and the host recommended getting the burger and an Old Fashioned. The burgers were fine but I'm trying to think of what to compare them to, maybe a version of White Castle but not sliders? The food was all decently priced that we got. The cheese curds and fried mushrooms were yummy. There is a lot of nostalgia here, supper club vibes meets dive bar, all in a good way! Sat at the bar and service was so horrible that we considered leaving after placing our drink order. Not sure of her name, but the gap-toothed female server/bartender with the dark hair and ponytail in a Badger jersey was barking at all of her customers and clearly in a horrible mood. She had no patience and was rude and condescending to everyone including co-workers, with the exception of what appeared to be two regulars. The only reason I stayed was because I was hungry and wanted to watch the first half of the game. It's no wonder the place was emptied out by 8 pm on a Saturday. My wife and I eat out 5-6 meals per week, and this is the first time in my entire life that I left no tip in a sit-down restaurant. I've been dining at Kroll's East since the 70's and she should not be interacting with customers in any capacity. Definitely a townie diner type spot. They have buttons you can press to get the attention of your server. That was SO COOL. We ordered cheese curds and drinks. My drink was a White Russian and came out without any white lol. They fixed it. Pretty cheap prices and lots of stuff to choose from. read more

I was told Krolls East is superior to Krolls West. I can't speak to that statement, but Krolls East is a fairly large, very old restaurant in dire need of updating. Although it seems somewhat clean, it is hard to ignore just how old and empty it feels. I guess people from the area really like it, but I'm guessing they really like the nostalgia. The food is good, not great. On food alone, it is 4 stars. The rest of the establishment brought it down to a 3 star review. Maybe stick to takeout here and you will be a bit happier. read more

I've heard of the great chili here for years, so when we were passing through the area, we had to check it out. #1. They are stuck in their glory days! As you enter the place, the hallway is full of "best chili" and "best burger" awards.....from several years/decades ago! Then, when you step into one of the dining areas, you see they haven't updated the place in 40+ years. Looked like late 70's decor. Definitely in need of some updates! #2. Service was great, but kinda awkward. No less than 5 different people greeted, took our order, delivered our food, and collected our bill. They were all polite and delivered our food/filled our drinks promptly, so while strange to have so many different people serving us, this was a plus. It was also odd that immediately upon delivering our food to the table, they presented the bill and collected payment. The girl even stood and waited as I signed the receipt. Must have been an old tradition. #3. The food was good! Chili was amazing, as described by many. I had a bowl, no spaghetti, with cheese, onion, and sour cream. Despite everything else, it'd be worth coming back for the chili alone. My family shared an order of onion rings, which were both tasty and plentiful. Lastly, I tried a cheeseburger, with butter, ketchup, and mustard. The burger was tasty, but not overly memorable. Chili was definitely the champ here! In the end, we came for the food, and it was good/great. Probably 4/5 stars, even! But, the time machine travel to the late 70s was odd and took significantly from my score. My wife even commented that the bar/lounge where we ate had the odor of cigarette smoke. This is sort of a hole in the wall restaurant. My mother and I stopped it because it was my father's favorite place to go when he was younger living in Green Bay. The waitress that served us was incredibly rude. Upon sitting down she asked what we wanted. No hello, no welcome in. We hadn't even looked at the menu so we had no idea what we wanted. Once we looked through the menu we ordered cheese curds, a burger no bun, bratwurst, onion rings and fries. The cheese curds were ok. Nothing overly exciting. The burger was incredibly flat and dry. It also came with a piece of butter on it. Super gross to put butter on a burger. Our waters were never refilled at any point and napkins were never brought out. The weirdest part was that once our food was placed in front of us, the waitress told us how much it was and waited for us to pay. Soooo I guess once you get your food you aren't allowed to order anything else. Maybe things were better 20+ years ago when my dad used to come here. I however was not impressed. read more

Built in 1935, and never updated. That can be ok but not this time. The hamburger consisted of multiple large slabs of cold butter on a hamburger patty. The bun is hard and dry by design. Imagine a McDonald's 1/4 pounder, left outside for days, then add cold butter and eat. It may be a tradition but it is one that is long past it's time. We made an unwise decision to go to Kroll's East on Saturday 11/2/24 as we were in town for the Packers game. We got there around 7:15 pm. We were greeted by the bartender who was in a foul mood and complaining about how overworked she was. I politely asked her to smile and be happy. She made a sarcastic comment and took our beverage order. That should have been our signal to leave immediately, however, we decided to stay. She continued to loudly voice her problems to other staff members. Many tables and booths had dirty dishes and were not cleaned up. The floor could have used a good vacuuming as well. We ordered a few beers, and the beer was flat with no carbonation whatsoever. I ordered the Mushroom Swiss burger and a large order of fries. My wife ordered the Peanut Butter burger and fries. I asked to have the burger cooked medium rare, and the waiter gave me some line about sanitary cooking requirements and having the burger properly cooked to well done. No exceptions! When our order finally came after 30 minutes, (the place wasn't crowded whatsoever) the waiter demanded we pay immediately, which I thought was not only rude, but very suspicious. After starting to eat, I figured out why. My burger (which was barely warm) was very, very thin, dry, and looked like it was microwaved and had been previously cooked and in a warming tray for a long time. There were only 4 mushrooms, had processed cheese on it, and it was tasteless. The bun was dry and crumbly. The fries were terrible and cold and tasted like the oil had not been changed in a very long time. My wife's meal was also poor it was also tasteless. We tried to have the waiter come back to complain; however, he disappeared after taking our money and was not to be seen. We left and chalked it up as a very bad experience. Within 15 minutes after returning to our hotel room, I was hit with massive diarrhea as my insides were rolling from the meal we ate. I spent most of the night in the bathroom with diarrhea from their futile attempt at "food". Not much sleep that night. I'd give this a negative rating (-10) and will NEVER step foot in their establishment again. I realize they have been in Green Bay since 1935, but that is not an excuse to serve the god-awful meal they offered along with the rude service and lack of cleanliness we encountered. read more

The worst driest horrible burgers ever out of Kroll's East!!! Why? What did you do to the burgers??? They tasted nothing like our orders when eating inside! That was lunch for 5 in the trash. Terrible. We were visiting from out of state and went here as a recommendation from a friend. I'm now wondering what I did to my friend. You're better off getting a microwave burger meal. The order took 1 hour at least to arrive. More like an hour and a half. Once the cold food arrived, they immediately asked for payment. I now know why they do that as people would refuse to pay if they tasted the food first. The burgers were over cooked and cold, with super dry buns. They put on slabs of butter which aren't melted. This place is disgusting. I wish there was an option for zero stars. Way way way better off just going to McDonald's. read more

I feel like I am turning my back on an old friend... I used to absolutely love this place. Great burgers and chili no more? At least not tonight! Not sure if some of the quirks that this place has are fun because they have been around forever or is they have just become annoying. Like paying for your food when it's deliver to your table. Is this a drive-through or a restaurant? Actually tonight it kind of pissed me off because the waiter came with my credit card receipt and asked me to sign while I had a greasy butter burger in my hand. Stood there until I put down my burger, whipped my hands and signed it. Plus, I had to tip before my meal was even over... and I would have tipped less tonight because the service and food was horrible! We walked in and were not greeted by anyone so we picked a table and waited as multiple servers passed us to take care of others. I finally had to ask someone to take our order. 5 minutes later someone came. Hers a tip.. choose an table along the wall because they have a buzzer to get a waiter to come to your table. Because we didn't have a buzzer at our table no one seemed to want to take care of us! When we did order, I ordered my favorite... double cheeseburger and a bowl of chili. Chili was still tasty, but Luke warm at best! Burger was terrible. Overdone and the only flavor it had was the condiments and the huge pad of butter on the bun. The meat looked like it was freezer burnt and every bit of its juice cooked out. SO LET DOWN. This place used to be awesome! Never got a refill on drinks, no one ever checked on our meal or if we needed anything else. And on top of that, as we were leaving and walked pass the crabby looking bartender I was hoping for at least a "how was it?" "Thanks for coming" or "goodnight". A friend needed a ride to Green Bay and I happened to be free, so I decided to stop by Kroll's East, since I'd already been to Kroll's West. I was told the East is better than West, since it is the original. I haven't been to West in years, so I don't recall specifics, but I remember liking it. The must-orders, as I'm told, are the cheese curds and the burger. Burgers come in "regular" size and 1/4 pound patties. I ordered a regular cheeseburger with everything (sharp American cheese, raw onions, pickles, butter, and "catsup" - I call it ketchup), small order of fries, and a small order of white cheddar cheese curds (yellow cheddar is also an option) - all for $10.02, including tax. Burger is served on a crispy "hard" roll with soft center, cut in half, and I thought the balance of toppings was pretty decent. Butter was likely intended to be the star and it was. I think it was the right amount, but I was actually expecting a little more. The fries were fine. Mostly crispy and VERY lightly seasoned. I dipped them in ketchup rather than add more salt. The cheese curds were excellent, and I get why they are a must-order. Not greasy in the slightest, appropriately breaded, and perfectly light golden brown. Nicely done! It was quiet on my Wednesday night visit with a customer at the bar that reached "over served" (the bartender cut her off - I hope she wasn't driving) and 3 other tables. The place looked supper club-ish, even though not a supper club, with an old pub feel. The Brewers game was on, so I watched while I waited for my order, which didn't take long to arrive. Food was good. Service was decent. I would eat there again. If I had more time, I would have skipped the fries and stopped at West for a burger and curds for comparison, but I was trying to beat the storm for my drive back to MKE. Maybe next time. read more

Kroll's east is the greasy spoon to get the archetypal Wisconsin butter burger, fried cheese curds, and your fish fry (perch) on Fridays. We've been coming here for years when we are in town visiting my in-laws, and my family loves it. It's dated for sure but let's call it timeless and that's the beauty of this place, it hasn't changed much since my in-laws came here when they were teens some 50 years ago. Interesting fact, the invention of the Wisconsin Butter burger is attributed to Kroll's in 1936, google it. Over the years we've tried most everything on the menu, but the cheese sea burger, cheese burger, chili, and cheese curds are mainstays and memorable. The buns are toasted and can be a little hard at times but the burgers with everything is good, with the butter, beef patty and other condiments mixing in a "fugue of sweets and savor so delightful". It's not gourmet, but it's a better than average burger. Yes it's very greasy, uh, it's a butter burger. The other dishes like the perch plate and the fried chicken are also good. As far as the service, it's functional. They're not friendly and it may seem like they are rude. You don't get a greeting or a smile from anyone but I guess that's how they've always been. My father in law can get a laugh out of anyone but not this crew. He doesn't seem to mind it so why should I. They get your order, they give your food, as I said functional. If you're looking for some greasy, tasty comfort food and feeling nostalgic, Kroll's East is a great place. read more

Took my sister and niece out for lunch today. From my experience I will never go back to Krolls East. I was told I had to pay my bill immediately when the food arrived. I asked why, I've never been asked to pay a bill immediately at a dine in restaurant before as soon as the food arrived. The server replied with, "that's how we do it here." Of course I said no I'll pay the bill at the end of our meal. Well we were sitting there I noticed no one else was asked to pay their bill immediately. It was exactly what I thought. We were the only brown people and the only ones asked to pay their bill immediately. At some point during the meal I gave my credit card to the server, she ran my card, came back to the table and asked me to sign the receipt! I told her she can wait until we finish our meal. When we got up to leave she ran over by us and asked if I signed the receipt. What the hell is wrong with these people??? After looking at other reviews, two months ago Sandi (from another post) noticed the same treatment to another brown family. Way to go Krolls East. Showing your true prejudice colors. We stopped at Krolls East in Green Bay. We been to the Krolls West, (which is operated by different owners). This place is the ultimate place for a drink and some grub. I use the word grub because to me it grub is a placemat for just flat down out good food. Nothing fancy, but appealing, cooked to your liking and plain good home cooking. While in Wisconsin we had to have some perch or walleye with fries and I was just ready for a good ole burger with a side of deep fried cheese curds. It was later on in the night when we got there so we were glad they were still serving. We sat bar side and the waitress was very pleasant and accommodating. The walleye plate was cooked to perfection and my burger was fried medium and dribbling with butter and along with the raw onions, tomato, lettuce, catsup and mustard just right with a nice tangy aroma. As I bit into the burger, I could feel the handroll it's served on just crusty enough and not to hard. OMG I can still savor the taste of the burger. The walleye was lightly coated and just firm enough to not be over cooked and the fries were crispy and firm. The cheese curds were hot and chewy and sticky. Our trip was completed with this stop and oh yes, we got a few dining certificates for some of our local friends that we stayed with on our trip so they too could enjoy such a Wisconsin, Green Bay staple. I remember it as a kid going there after the bars closed and it hasn't changed other than changing the menu to cover more items. If your in Green Bay, this is a must stop. read more

It's been a couple years since we've had food from Kroll's. This time we brought food back to the house. The burgers were fine but didn't seem as special as remembered. It was hard to put your finger on the reason and may have been because we took the food to-go. The onion rings, however, were terribly over-cooked. They were dried out and tasteless. It looks like the entire restaurant has fallen into disrepair. The owners don't seem to want to invest in repairs to the building, cleaning the grounds, or hiring staff. My recent experiences have been the same; when I order to pick up, my order is usually 10-15 minutes later than they said over the phone and the food is cold. The staff is usually moderate, to under friendly. It just seems like the overall quality of the food has gone down, while the prices have gone up. I live on the Far East side of Green Bay, but if I have a hankering for a Krolls burger, I'll travel to the west side to get my fix. read more

Stopped at Kroll's after reading all about butter burgers. The butter burger didn't disappoint. Wasn't a big burger but that was probably for the best. Was tasty and that's what matters. Important info for those dining in booths on the bar side of the restaurant - you ring the little door bell to get service. That's a must. We realized that was the way it works at Kroll's and our order was taken. The people in the booth behind us didn't realize and got frustrated when nobody came to take their order and then somewhat rudely barked at the bartender asking for service. They received rude service in return. I would expect if they were writing a review it would be a one star review. We, however, found the gruff service amusing and it added to our experience. If you want charming service don't eat on the bar side. If you want an interesting atmosphere, go for it. But use the little door bell as per the instructions in the menu. And bring cash. read more

This used to be my favorite place to grab a burger and soup. We haven't been here in a long time but decided to stop in the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, the service at this place will not have me coming back anytime soon. We placed our order and waited a good 20 minutes for our food. If you've never been there before, usually you wait 10 mins tops. Nobody came to check on us even when we pushed the service button. I walked up to the bar and tried to flag down a someone to place a drink order and check on our order. The waitress had no answer on why our food was taking so long. Five more minutes and our food finally arrived. Unfortunately, our server passed the hot soup over my 2 year old daughter. We had to instruct her to walk around instead of passing hot soup over her head. Overall the food is good but don't expect ANY customer service at this place. Very disappointing. read more
