I ordered delivery, so I can't really speak on the ambiance, but the food definitely made an impression. I had the fried fish, macaroni and cheese, fried green beans, and a slice of sweet potato pound cake. Let's start with the star of the show: the fried green beans. Whew! I love trying new food items, especially when they surprise me, and these absolutely blew my mind. Perfectly fried, flavorful, and just downright addictive, they were hands down my favorite. The fried fish was good and hit the spot. The sweet potato pound cake was also solid, moist, sweet, and a great way to finish the meal. The only thing that didn't quite do it for me was the macaroni and cheese, but everything else more than made up for it. Overall, I'm pleasantly surprised and definitely happy I discovered Ray's. If you've been keeping this place a secret, I forgive you... but I'll be ordering those fried green beans again soon!

We learned on our very first visit how good the gumbo is and it's become a must ever since. The people who work here are friendly and you can tell they have a lot of regulars who stop in for food. There's a gravel lot right next to the building and you can take your food to go or enjoy it there. Our food took about 15-20 minutes and then we took it home to enjoy. The portions are definitely fair for the price. They also pack everything well for the ride home. The gumbo is our favorite, it's flavorful and packed with protein like their sausage, chicken, and shrimp and has just a hint of spice. We tried their riblets for the first time and it was a generous portion and we really enjoyed the bbq sauce they used. The mac and cheese is good, but I like mine creamier. It does have a little spice which was nice. The dressing was packed with flavor and we were excited they offered this side because you don't see it everywhere. Their hot water cornbread is definitely something they're known for and is really good on its own or dipped into the gumbo. The Palmer here tastes like Brisk raspberry tea mixed with lemonade, and we really enjoy this twist on it. Overall this spot is a local gem and we love visiting.

One…read morecustomer was sitting at a table waiting for her order. It's a small, very interesting place! (I found this restaurant by accident on Google.) I decided to stand there and review the very clear appetizing menu, taking a moment to soak in this unusual eating spot. I enjoyed the uniqueness and creativity of the layout--you have to be here to understand it. Anyway, as I was standing there, I heard a very pleasant voice ask, "May I help you?" I reached up and turned up my "pretend" hearing aid to make sure I heard that voice coming from a professional Young Queen. It made me forget I was at a soul food establishment! Usually, I am greeted with rolling eyes, laziness, and--most of all--attitude. (See one of my old podcasts link below regarding my opinion on soul food restaurants on iHeartRadio): https://www.iheart.com/podcast/269-the-david-mack-show-105280474/episode/lena-s-soul-food-in-oakland-ca-119449772/?cmp=android_share&sc=android_social_share&pr=false Back to my review: Her name is Victoria... like the Queen! I told Victoria I was looking at the menu, which has a very nice variety of soul food selections. Victoria asked me if I would like to sample the gumbo. Sure! Victoria came back with a small, teasing sample, and after tasting it, I told her, "SOLD!" Just from the taste of that gumbo, I knew my Mother's Spirit was back there doing the cooking. It was a very cold day, and I would have eaten there, but because of the layout, I ordered the family size to-go. The gumbo also comes with hot water cornbread. Victoria took my order, my payment, and advised me it would be ready in five minutes. I waited in my car. I came back in four minutes, and my order was already bagged and ready for pickup. I "suffered" during the hour-long drive home, smelling the aroma of that meal the whole way! Finally home, I opened the secure bag, filled to the top container, and took out the prize. The food presentation was excellent! I put the gumbo in a bowl, and it was still very hot. I then proceeded to taste my meal: Rice: Nice and fluffy! Chicken: Flavored perfectly. Soup Juice: Perfect. Prawns: Excellent. Sausage: Plump and sliced perfectly. All many other ingredients: Very tasty with a hint of spice. Note: There were no crab legs to make a mess (which I did NOT miss) and no slimy okra (which was great)! The sweet hot water cornbread was very buttery and looked like a thick pancake. I put mine in the toaster oven to warm it up and get it a little crisp. It was amazing! That gumbo not only warmed me up, but it also put me to sleep like a big baby! If this restaurant continues with the trajectory of this review (professional attitude, unique layout, and great menu items), they will be the "go-to" soul food spot on the 80! I wouldn't change a thing! I will return because I want to report on another food item I had my eye on before the gumbo sample! Go check out this spot and see the Young Queen Victoria! Make sure you tip her for great service (No Tax On Tips), just like I did! David Mack (Reviewer-in-Chief)

The chicken was impossibly tender on the inside with a crispy, flavorful crust that had just the right amount of heat. You can tell they're not cutting corners -- every bite felt intentional. My biggest blunder while ordering was not understanding the "Chicken Tender Sando Combo" item, I thought it was a combo with a sando and tenders. But instead it's a combo made of a sandwich composed of a chicken tender. It was still delicious though. We ordered a Chicken Tender Sando and some extra Tenders to share. I got the mild because at hot chicken places mild is more like an actual hot anywhere else, but it was exactly what I was craving- very good crunch, moist, and spicy. The tenders themselves were just as good, and the house sauce was super good as well, went perfectly with the spicy chicken- it was less mayoey than roosters, but not in a bad way, it may have been thicker too. Lastly the fries, they had an amazing crunch, definitely some of the best fries in the Sac area, super super crispy and seasoned super well to go with the sauce. Definitely give this place a shot if you're craving fried chicken, or even just some good fries. We will be back at some point, probably for another Sac concert.

This takes me to the Arden-Arcade neighborhood of Sacramento where I had the opportunity to check out "Tolo Market & Restaurant". Located directly on Marconi Ave. and adjacent to busy Fulton Ave., this place has been doing double duty by being a small dedicated store (specializing in unique perishable goods for purchase) as well as a full-on Afghan-fusion menu. Considering they opened in early-2020 (while making it through the pandemic), I will say that this place survived the worst of the worst. I ended up dining here solo and arrived during the afternoon of Sunday 6/29/2025 at around 2:45pm. Since this wasn't a busy area which neighbors a Domino's Pizza and a dental office (which was closed), I parked directly outside of the business. Upon entry, there were no customers at the time but two employees (one of which I believe was the owner). Additionally, the market area had a ton of unique spices, sauces, and many other food items that are for sale. As for the menu itself (which also goes by "Madar Afghan-Food & Bakery", it was quite eclectic as their influence on the Persian/Halal dishes was quite apparent. Here, you will see a variety of samosa dishes, Bolani, kebabs, Naanwich, Halal fries, and unique desserts. Since this was my first time, I ended up going with a fan favorite, their "Chapli Burger". This was an interesting twist on a burger which uses spiced Pakistani meat complete with green chutney, herbed yogurt, lettuce and tomatoes on a soft sesame seed bun. I ordered the combo which included a side of their "Baked Masala Fries" and a refreshingly delicious "Salaam Cola" (which is no sugar for the carb-conscious). The entire time it took for them to prepare my burger & fries only took about 9 minutes. As shown in the photos I provided, the burger itself had a wonderful presentation. The meat was tender, juicy, and seasoned to perfection which utilizes subtle hints of Pakistani spices. The yogurt dressing provided a cool refreshing balance while the tomatoes were cool and crunchy. My fries also had a very crispy and well seasoned taste while the cola was delicious and hit the spot on a somewhat warm summer day. All in all, "Tolo Market & Restaurant" exceeded my expectations. Don't let the no-frills look of this place fool you because they really put out some excellent flavor in the place. The service was amazing while the prices of their entire menu was very reasonable. Best of all, they have very decent hours being opened for business Sun-Thu from 9am-9pm and Fri-Sat from 9am-10pm. With that said and done, I am giving this place a perfect five-star rating.

When I was here, there was a young man at the register who also made the food. Daughter got a chicken kebab which she enjoyed and I got some sort of "burger." It was supposed to come with an egg to boot. I got the order to go. The order took quite a bit of time which gave me the opportunity to see the interesting grocery store items: various loose leaf teas, spices, refrigerated gulab jamun, it was all very fascinating. Once home, unwrapping my "burger" it was more like a huge wrap with a type of flatbread consisting mostly of fries and salad mix with a few pieces of chicken. No egg to speak of. I ended up throwing out 80% of it. Maybe there was a language barrier? In any case I don't think I'll be returning.
