OK, this is a review for Krispy Krunchy Chicken at 2855 S Winchester Blvd, Campbell, CA 95008. This is located in a 76 Union gas station inside the market. The Chicken is strictly take out and is made fresh throughout the day. It tastes like they hand batter each piece and fry it in hot oil. Surprisingly, it is not really greasy. There is no ambience at all-its a gas station and no place to sit down and limited parking. The cashier is polite and friendly, but way too busy to do anything except take your order. The system they use is excellent for keeping track of the orders. So why am I even reviewing this? Because the chicken IS THAT good! Fresh made quality chicken and wings that rival the big chains. The biscuits are a corn bread style with honey on the top. Be sure you pick up several with your order. They also have special combos available and the prices are fair. Good grief - I was so hoping to find a little jewel of a place; I wouldn't mind gas station ambiance if the food is good. But it was completely inedible! I got a chicken sandwich - it was 1:30, so lunchtime, but I'd swear it must have been yesterday's food. It was just a bun and a chunk of chicken: the bottom bun was completely stale - as hard as a dog biscuit, you could not eat it. And the chicken was also stale - fully dried out, I tried eating it by itself and couldn't, like a 2-day old leftover. And certainly didn't appear anything like "hand-breaded". Bunch of scammers! I asked for the "CHICKEN + BISCUIT" 4pc that's $9.99. Dude asked what side I would like so I said mash and gravy. Then got charged $15.61 for it. I didn't catch it at first since I was in a rush to leave, but after dropping it off in the car. I decided I wanted 2 more pieces so I came back and asked for the CHICKEN + BISCUIT 2pc that's $6.49 but with mac and cheese this time. The charge ends up coming to almost $10+. I said "hold up your menu says $6.49 how is it $10?" He said because I ordered the chicken, biscuit, and a side. When I ordered the first time he implied it came with a side when he asked what side I wanted even though I didn't order with one so I figured when I order again it'll come with the side. He tried to tell me I ordered the krunch box when I specifically said 2pc CHICKEN + BISCUIT. I said I never asked for a krunch box and he kept trying to tell me again so after that I said leave out the side then I just wanted the chicken and biscuit and he goes "I already made it I can't put it back". WTF?! I didn't touch it it's still in your window what's so hard about just canceling the order and changing it to what I asked for. Dude got mad and goes NEXT TIME ASK FOR THE CHICKEN AND BISCUIT. The meat was very moist, and the exterior was very Krispy! The biscuit was warm and soft. It was so good, though a bit starchy. I could down a dozen of them! The chicken was amazing. Hands down. We also had the onion rings (very good) and potato wedges (a bit thick). I can't wait to try the fish and shrimp options. The biscuit was very sweet so I could see where some people would love it. It's not my thing. And I had to wait for chicken to finish frying and so mine was super fresh. It was also very good as leftovers the next day. But next time, I'm going to find a way to order online first so I can just pick it up. The people working there were so friendly and helpful and very patient with a first timer. They were very aware of orders that were sent in to be sure that people could walk in and get their orders right away. And I saw quite a few come in that way. So that's when I got the clue to preorder next time. With the combo meals, you do get to go over and get your fountain beverage. There's also a lot of other tempting goodies. But this time I focused on the chicken. There is no place to sit and eat, so we drove to a park. And the little trick of putting out some meat to keep the yellow jackets away didn't work this time. They do Cajun fried chicken along with other Cajun and Southern dishes. No worries if you can't handle spicy food though, as the regular chicken isn't that kind of hot, and tastes like it's done traditionally by frying in lard. Actually, almost everything seems to be deep-fried and/or practically made of butter. Ordering can be done online or through the gas station cashier by ordering from the heated showcase display. They seemed to get brisk business here for their chicken and were great with our larger order (aka their family meals), even with the line/crowd of people ordering and waiting for their food. Side note, a lot of people seem to drop by here for lunch, which makes sense as you can pick up some hot food and whatever other snacks or drinks you may want from the rest of the store/market. Not much seating inside though. Krispy Krunchy Chicken is most well known for being the fried chicken place inside gas stations. The South Bay has three locations with this Campbell's Sunnyoaks Valero one being one of two gas station spots and the third being some kind of pickup location. I love how crispy their chicken is while the meat remains juicy, the types of sauces, and I'm pretty sure the honey butter biscuits are the most amazing I've ever had. Overall, this is probably THE cheat day menu. Super convenient for when you're feeding a larger group and I appreciate that they sort out/sell different parts of the chicken on top of white vs dark meat. Would definitely recommend it. read more

I never thought i'd give fried chicken from a gas station in campbell 4 stars on yelp, but here we are. krispy krunchy chicken is tucked into a corner of a gas station on winchester. as soon as you step inside the greasy savory smell of the chicken hits like a wave of goodness. i was a bit unsure what to order but ultimately ordered the 3 piece combo with mac n cheese. the portions were humongous. believe it or not, the gigantic mass of chicken above the biscuit is a single piece. the chicken is nicely seasoned with cajun flavors. it has a hint of spice that's perfect for fried chicken. the honey butter biscuit was fresh and unlike any biscuit i'd ever tasted. pairing this with the chicken created this sweet, spicy and savory combination that brings the meal together. sadly, the mac n cheese was some of the worst i've ever had. it's watery and bland and was a let down considering how good the other food was. overall, good price for the food. i will 100% be back again to try the tenders and maybe the potato wedges. read more

Yep, I did it. I got fried chicken from a gas station. And I'd do it again. A solid 4.5 stars for me. I hadn't even heard of the Krispy Krunchy concept until last week, when someone on the Nextdoor neighborhood group asked for fried chicken recommendations, and more than a handful of people chimed in with this suggestion. Further investigation piqued my curiosity, as almost all the locations on the company website were in gas stations around the area. Now, the only food that I typically get after filling up is maybe a Slim Jim or perhaps a bag of Funyuns, so I was immediately skeptical. But with so many positive opinions, I just had to give it a try. I called ahead on a Saturday evening to make sure they were actually still making chicken, as I didn't want to make the 20 minute drive just to find out they were sold out. Yes, indeed, they would run the fryer until late in the night. So I made my way down and found....a gas station. With a sign out front proclaiming the presence of fried chicken inside. When I entered I was initially dismayed because the display case was practically empty, but the nice fella behind the counter assured me that fresh goods were coming out soon. I placed my order a struck up a conversation with one of the two other customers waiting, and upon learning that this was my first time, he cautioned that I would be back regularly. As we waited together, another four customers came in. This place was doing brisk business. I got my food and made the drive home, driving quickly so that things wouldn't get to cold or soggy by the time we sat down to eat. Remarkably, it was still very hot. Chicken must have a very high specific heat (that's kitchen thermodynamics for you). Our musings on our meal: Fried chicken - we got an 8-piece dark, and it was really quite excellent. Skin was indeed crispy and crunchy, even after the ride home. The flavor was nice, not too spicy or salt, but on occasion I did detect a slightly bitter note, most likely from the oil in which it was fried. The meat was moist, and the chicken pieces were decent in size though one of the thighs looked just a bit atrophic. Eaten with sprinkling of Frank's Red Hot sauce, this is a good meal. Mashed potatoes and gravy - would have a preferred if they had put the gravy in the separate container as I usually don't like too much on my potatoes. Mixed together it was a little too liquid-y, but had a good taste. With all that gravy I expected it to be a lot saltier, but it was just right. Unlike KFC, there wasn't an odd chemical aroma to it. Jambalaya - rice and chicken, mildly spicy. It was decent, nothing especially noteworthy for me, but the others in my group liked it. Honey biscuits - ooohhh, I liked these quite a bit. Sweet on the outside, moist and warm on the inside. Should have bought more than one per person, as they are a little on the small side. I would have liked to see something on the menu to provide a little coolness, such as macaroni salad or coleslaw. But maybe that would make it too much like KFC. Krispy Krunchy locations are within a Valero gas station. I like the crispyness of their chicken pieces and usually get the $5 deal which has 1 though, 1 leg, wedge fries, and a biscuit. It's just the right about for a quick lunch. The chicken is always hot and crispy and to me tastes great. I'd put it right next to Popeyes chicken as far as the flavor and crisp. The Cajun style wedge fries are yummy and full you up considering the portion. The biscuit is so bomb tho. It's like taking the upper portion of a cornbread muffin (the best part), slather butter and honey on it and cook till crispy. Soooooo gooood. I got startled by some bright orange goop under the chicken skin which we later found out was the seasoning, but it was a bit of an odd texture (at least in my personal taste). Krispy Krunchy Chicken, as the story goes, was started some time ago in Louisiana. They franchise out their concept mostly to gas stations, although there are some stand-alone stores popping up hither and thither. Some of my friends have been raving about this stuff like it's the second coming of fried chicken so I recently had to see what the flapping was about. For me, and the coworkers I shared it with, the first experience was just ok. I chose a day and told my colleagues I was going to pick up lunch. "What are you bringing," they asked. I said it was a surprise. Then I fired up the Yelp app and ordered from the closest location. So convenient. The app said my order would be ready to pick up in 30 minutes and I timed my drive to show up just in time. I'm glad I ordered ahead, there were two sizeable queues: one waiting to order, one waiting to claim their order. There were more chicken customers at this particular Valero on S Winchester in San Jose than gas station customers. I walked to the counter and showed them my order number. They pulled my already packed order out of a heating cabinet and handed it to me. I could feel the collective eyes on me and suspect they were all wishing they had ordered ahead. I took the goods back and unpacked them on a large table. The team was happily surprised. Only one of them knew anything about Krispy Krunchy Chicken and they were all intrigued by the idea of gas station chicken. Let's do this. We had: 12pc Fried Chicken, mixed - the two pieces I had tasted different. One was briny and tasted fresh. The other was completely bland. The breading on both was crispy. I would rate this 5 out of 10. 6pc Tenders - these were juicy and crunchy. Other than some packets of Crystal Louisiana style hot sauce they don't have any dipping sauces for tenders. That's not something I'm used to, but it was ok without, earning a 7 out of 10. Fries - the picture on the menu showed some possibly spicy/battered fries. What we received were some pretty bland potato wedges. 4 out of 10. 16pc Crispy Shirmp - this was supposed to include a side of my choice, which I chose but did not receive. This shrimp was a total waste of time. The menu said they were honey butter shrimp? Nah. 3 out of 10. Cracklins/Chicharrons - fried chicken skin with some spicy dust sprinkled on them. These were fun but not mind blowing. 6 out of 10. Honey Butter Biscuits - these were pretty good. 7 out of 10 Comparing Krispy Krunchy Chicken to some other chicken establishments, I would put it near the bottom. I didn't detect much of anything "Louisiana" about this chicken. There was no cajun seasoned taste. There were some consistency issues from piece-to-piece, and ultimately consistency is going to probably be a thing when you're thinking about gas station chicken, much like these cloud kitchen brands that pop up. There's no brand ambassador ensuring the same result from place to place, so your mileage may vary. Still I would possibly get it again. If I were driving down the highway, stopped for gas, needed a quick bite and this was in the gas station, yeah, I might get it. Will I take it over my local favorites? Not likely. read more

Talk about Jekyll and Hyde. One day, I ordered Krispy Krunchy thru Doordash and thought it was one of the better fried chicken pieces that I've ever had. Then, a month later, I had it again and I literally thought it was the worst. The first time, the batter was perfectly lightly crispy and seasoned extremely well. The meat was juicy and felt it couldn't be beat. The second time, it was crunchy in a way that my teeth hurt a little when biting it. Also, it was SUPER salty. I had to eat just a little skin with a big part of meat, so I could at least stomach it. Now, for the sides: The biscuits are my favorite, by far! It's a honey biscuit, so it has a slight sweetness to it. The biscuit is tender and isn't too dry like some i've had at other places. I've also had the mac and cheese, jambalaya, and potato wedges. All are decent, but don't stand out. The real question for me is if I'd try this place again. And, the answer is probably a yes. I'm curious to see which order was the anomaly. Also, I'd eat some not-so-good chicken to eat those biscuits again! For now, though, I'd give them a 2.5, but round up to 3 because of those biscuits. read more

As someone that's had some authentic Nashville Hot and Louisiana Fried Chicken, I take it pretty seriously. While you can't go wrong with a bucket from places like KFC or even Safeway, there's better to be had out there. And that includes this gas station chicken. While I'm a calorie-counting health nut now (ew), fried chicken is still one of my favorite indulgences, and these stands have 8-pc dark meat for $9.49. Dark meat. So wings, thighs, and drumsticks. All the best parts of a chicken! The breading and whatever flavors they use for their chicken is top-notch for fast chicken, and I'd go as far as calling them the best value in the market.
