I came for the famous cubed croissants and I left with a bag of goodies! Firstly, this season's cubed croissant felt like it was personally made for me. It's Ube and passionfruit...my top two flavours. The toppings were half and half and tasted exquisitely tropical. The inside was filled with what they say is Ube and passionfruit flavoured condensed milk but the Ube definitely overpowers the passionfruit and you don't get much of that flavour from the creamy goodness. Mind you, it's still absolutely amazing. The winner of the centre is their espresso flavour cubed croissant which is thick gooey coffee flavoured condensed milk. The croissant portion could be a bit more crispier on the outside as it felt a bit stale. Make sure to order 48 hours ahead if this is the only thing you're going in for! As I mentioned before, I walked away with soooo much more. I tried the Duck and basil varenky, which is like a pasta dumpling, along with their sirniki which is kind of like a pancake but filled with a very fine grain cottage cheese mixed with sugar in the restaurant section. They were perfect and came with a side of sour cream and jam which is the traditional way to eat them. The pork filled cabbage would be something I'd steer away from as the consistency on the inside is a bit too fine and resonated a bit like baby food. I think if they keep the ingredients whole instead of smashing them it could be a real winner. I was lucky enough that they have a fridge and freezer section for items that you can pick up. I bought the frozen versions of the above mentioned. I also got this jar of beet and horseradish which isn't too spicy and super creamy. I wish the place was a little cozier and warmer and the aesthetics in the dining area could use a bit of a refresh but the service was efficient. Come with an empty tummy and leave with a happy one at Kozak!
I came here a few times for their delicious Babka but was always curious about the mains and have heard good things about the Borsch. The Borsch was such an experience. I loved learning to eat it like an Ukrainian! I am not sure why the steps are the way they are but oh my goodness, the result was so delicious I kept thinking about it the rest of the week. The portions are huge. My friend and I ordered another dish to share but was so full that we would have been satisfied without. You can get the Borsch with beans, pork, or salo canapes. We both opted for pork but next time I would like to try the salo! The restaurant has two sides, a more "quick" service side and a "sit down" side. Service is friendly and quick! Lots of street parking available in the area. They have two other locations as well.
Authentic Ukrainian cuisine, great flavour, Staff super friendly and ask how is the food. Love when has a small deli and restaurant vibe, bakery is so intoxicated from the fresh bread
My heart bleeds for the people of Ukraine. I have zero ties to that country yet I feel its pain. I read about how it was a power house back in the day & that how just prior to the current war, it was known as - 'the bread basket of Europe.' I have passed by the Kozak Ukrainian Eatery - Gastown location so many times but just never had time to pop in. So here I was on a lunch break at the Victoria Drive location to finally check it out. Friendly Ukrainian lady helped me select my goodies - the gigantic Lemon & Blueberry Cube Croissant & a Pletenka (Cinnamon Roll). The cube croissant should be lightly warmed up & can be shared. Have the Cinnamon roll (also lightly warmed up) with tea or coffee. Both are sweet & yummy. You'll find coffee & tea available, along with various Ukrainian breads & cakes for sale, along with Borscht (Ukrainian beef & vegetables soup), Cabbage Rolls & Pierogies. This location is like an old cafe with a Ukraine/Europe feeling via decor & layout. Come by & support Ukraine! Slava Ukraini!
Kozak is a truly unique experience and an introduction into the Ukrainian cafe experience. Their coffee is home brewed and tastes noticeably more complex and delicious. Additionally, the ambiance inside is very cultural and has a clear sense of community with ready-to-eat items available to take back home to enjoy.
Tried out the downtown location and it was a total treat so of course I had to give the cafe a visit! We ordered a coffee and two pastries which were super flakey!! I love that they served to-go food for you to have a Ukrainian feast at home and they also had lots of Ukrainian drinks to choose from.
....so this is not rating the restaurant , service or other food items... ...this is just rating the cube croissants... ...purchased all 4 different flavours... ...this is an excellent marketing item and whoever thought to make this item should be applauded... ....this item easily gets a 8.9/10... ....the croissant is light and buttery with a crispy exterior...the icing is tasty but jus a bit too sweet for my taste but will easily satisfy any sweet tooth out here...each croissant has the same filling of mixed berry cream cheese...once out of the oven or lightly warmed up in the microwave will make an excellent accompaniment with any coffee or tea... ....I would give this item a 10 if the cream cheese was different for each cube croissant and the icing wasn't so sweet...
Pierogis were delicious .. taste and texture scream fresh and handmade.. potato and cheese filling was soft and delicate.. the duck and cilantro reminded me of my mother in law's homemade Chinese dumplings, minus the garlic.. the pastries we tried were just soso.. the cube croissant is aesthetically pleasing and Instagram worthy but sadly was dry/chewy, filled with a basic strawberry jam and not worth the hefty price tag of $17. I don't believe any of the pastries were fresh.. the cinnamon twist was especially dry and stale. Would return for their freshly made food, but it's a pass for the bakery items. Free lemonade for purchases over $25, whether you're dining in taking out.

Upon arrival, two servers appeared somewhat aloof. We ordered a few cups of coffee and a croissant. The croissant seemed darker than usual. Despite initial reservations, I purchased it anyway. After one bite, I was certain it was burnt and tasted bitter. I notified the red-haired male server, who brusquely, without asking, began to replace it with another from the same batch. I declined, requesting a non-burnt alternative. He replied that none were available. He didn't offer another pastry option. At this point I began to feel fearful of his impatience attitude when he said: "So what do you want me to do?!". So I gently asked if I could get a refund, to which he responded curtly and proceeded to return my change all in coins! Subsequently, a white female customer arrived, and his demeanor shifted dramatically, displaying a welcoming smile. This apparent disparity in treatment led me to feel discriminated against, particularly as my Asian family and I had not offended the servers. The place was nearly empty. We weren't bothering the servers. I did ask a question but the guy just pointed me to ask someone else before I even spoke! I even left a 15% tip which I now regret. This experience was truly disappointing, and I am reluctant to return.
I was having Pho across the street with my buddy when he suggested we check out this place after. Since I was already full from Pho I didn't try any of their food that day but all their pastries looked really good and knew I'd be back to try some. On that day I just had a wild rose latte, it was pretty good, I'm not really a coffee/latte guy. I have been back a couple of more times to try their pastries, I've had the chocolate babka and the cinnamon roll. Both really good. There's still a lot of stuff I'd like to try. The girls who work there are really nice and friendly. The place is clean and they have a decent size dining area if you want to eat in. They also have some hot food like soup and cabbage rolls besides all their baked goods. There is I think 2 hour parking outside on Victoria. Can't wait to be back.....
I've visited here once for the bakery and this recent visit was for the Ukranian food. Cabbage Rolls and Borsht looked super yummy so I got the Hungry Tato Combo ($17.90) for lunch. I prepaid for my food, took the number sign and then waited for my food to come at my table.The portion may look small, but it was filling after having soup, Cabbage Roll and some dumplings. I had 2 potato Perogis and chicken and mushrooms Nalynsnyky. Everything tasted little sweet in general. Loved the rye bread it was robust, tasty and fresh. I really liked the slight sour taste in the bread as well. It went perfectly with Borsht. I enjoyed trying a bit of everything from Hungry Tato Combo.
How did I not discover this place sooner?! Came in to try their infamous cube croissant and it was like a piece of heaven! The croissant part was nice and flakey on the outside with the buttery layers on the inside and the cream cheese filling just added the perfect amount of richness. The blackcurrant icing was a bit too sweet but I like how it tasted a little tart to give it a nice balance. The honey cake for me was also pretty good however for some reason I was expecting more of an actual honey taste. I didn't get that. Nonetheless, it was still pretty amazing. You can tell these people know what they're doing! The ginger guy was also super nice and friendly and easy on the eyes too.
I'd previously visited their Gastown location for more of a happy hour vibe but wanted to try their Victoria Drive location for some classic dishes. We shared a beef borscht and the pork cabbage rolls (most of their mains are $15-$18)! I'd definitely recommend the cabbage rolls as the sauce was savoury and hearty; honestly both dishes were very filling as is characteristic of Ukrainian food. The borscht was more tomatoey than I'm used to which I didn't like as much (I usually have a more beet based one) but their sour cream was fresh and amazing quality. Also comes with some raw garlic and rye bread. I was definitely curious about their pastries and drinks so might come back another time for that! read more
Traditional bakeries (esp around Vancouver) all just blend together, but if you know anything about Ukraine, they just love to bake. The Sharlotka (apple cake) is a must have; seriously an apple pie has nothing on this. Honorable mention goes to the pistachio roll. The sausage bun and pork pyrizhky were a bit more on the dry side, while the apple turnover was a bit too strong on the cardamom for my taste. This was purely a bakery review, but they offer a cafe style sit down area to enjoy their savory restaurant menu. There's also a kid's area with toys, art and books to keep them entertained as well. Looking forward to returning to try more items. read more
I learned about Kozak from seeing their cubed croissants. I didn't see any in the display. When I asked one of the workers, I learned that they've stopped making them. Considering this is the location that supplies bread for the other locations, I guess an era has ended. I ended up trying Kozak with a group of friends. Most of us hadn't tried Ukrainian food before. The only thing I've had before this were pierogies. I will say, this isn't the easiest place to eat family style, especially as 7 people. The dishes are designed for a single eater. My group ordered a salo, nalysnyky, borsch, cabbage rolls, potato latkes, 2 different pierogies, lamb stew, honey cake, pistachio rum baba, cherry fluff and a trubochka. The most surprising thing was how much sour cream ordering these dishes resulted in. Almost all of them came with at least a dollop if not several of sour cream. Of all these dishes, I will say that I enjoyed the borsch, latkes and duck pierogi the most from the savory dishes. I found the flavors of those three the most memorable and well done. Since I tried this family style, I only ended up having a single bite for several of these dishes. Maybe some of the ones that didn't make my top would have risen if I had more, but it's hard to say. For the desserts, I found these interesting but not quite up my alley. The rum baba was true to its name and was very alcohol-y. I was surprised that the trubochka wasn't crispy. It wasn't bad but didn't particularly stand out. The other two didn't quite remain in memory enough to give good feedback. For the most part, these were about the same for everyone except the rum baba. That was universally the least favorite due to the alcohol taste. Overall, it was cool to try more Ukrainian food. It was my first time to come here and buy their bread. I was very excited to find a good bakery in the neighborhood. They sell regular and organic bread and pastries. They also sell hot food and soup. There are quite a lot on their menus, so I will come back here and try their hot food and coffee. I bought two loaves of the organic sunflower seed rye sourdough. I requested to slice the bread, so I didn't have to do it myself at home. They specified each slice would be about 1 inch thick. That was totally fine. The server or staff here was very friendly. I told her it was my first time to come here, so I was exploring and trying to figure out what I liked. I asked her questions about the bread and she was very polite and friendly answering me. The interior design is very authentic. I liked it! I will come back here and dine in for sure. They are right on Victoria Drive, so it's a bit hard to find parking right in front of the shop, but you can still park in small streets or in the residential areas and walk to the shop. read more

This was my first time trying Ukrainian food, and I was really impressed. The dishes were truly delicious! I even tried food from all of my friends' plates, and every single dish was so good that I was jealous I hadn't ordered it myself. While there was a bit of a wait between ordering and being served, I'm sure it's because everything was prepared with care and attention. The quality of the food was high, the prices were fair, and both the flavors and service were excellent. I'll definitely be coming back the next time I'm in Vancouver--this place is a must! read more
Came for a weekday dine-in dinner w family. Very quiet, lots of Uber eats delivery persons waiting for pick-up. Ordered an espresso and waited on the outdoor patio for rest of the party. Got a nice complimentary cookie with my order. Ordered the pork/onion perogies, lamb shank, and pork cabbage rolls, honey cake, and chocolate honey truffles for three of us. First time at this outlet. I usually go to the one in New West ever since it first opened there. This place is way bigger and one side meant for dining though it was closed when I was there. I decided to try new items besides the usual stuff I always get. The stuffed crepes with meat and onions under the breakfast section were very tasty. I also ordered the cabbage rolls, chocolate babka loaf, honey cake and rum baba. I did not see the Napoleon cake which was what I went there for. The rum baba was new to me. It contained rum and the bottom was drenched in syrup. It was pretty sweet. Not sure if I like it. I will stick to the dark chocolate babka and maybe honey cake. read more
Very tasty, authentic Ukrainian cuisine with lots of vegan options. This place has been on my radar for a while, especially after I learned that they are very vegan-friendly. Since I hadn't been before, I got the vegan option of their "Hungry Tato" combo ($18.40, which comes with bean borsch, varenyky (potato dumplings), holubtsi (cabbage rolls with mushroom), and usually nalysnyky (crepes with cabbage). Everything was quite tasty, especially the cabbage rolls. The portion is reasonable, though the price is a bit steep. Very tasty and reasonably filling overall. Extremely friendly service. I like that I can have the borsch if I want something satisfying on low calories, or choose among their many treats. I am not a fan of the chocolate babka as it's not moist enough to be a good bread and not rich enough to be a pastry. But the honey cake and chocolate cake are great. If you like condensed milk in your coffee, the Ukrainian latte is delicious. The staff are friendly. read more
YES! Finally, a new restaurant that isn't Vietnamese! I applaud Kozak for opening up in Little Hanoi. Their opening has been delayed for what feels like half a year. But, once you step inside, you can see the extent of the renovations. What used to be a typical Vietnamese diner (dingy walls, poor lighting, weathered linoleum, phonebooth-sized bathroom and cheap, rickety, mismatched chairs and tables) has been completely revitalized with bright lighting, open bench seating, accent tiled-walls, wood-accented counter tops, flatscreen TV menu boards, clean flooring and amazing custom painted murals on the walls. This venue went from the outhouse to the penthouse. The amount of money and effort put into this place shows that they are in it for the long haul unlike the numerous Asian places that pop up overnight, and shutter months later. During the soft open, we only had a chance to sample some of the baked goods. I had never had a "Dark Chocolate Babka" before. What I assumed was simply a cinnamon bun was actually a pastry with dark chocolate filling instead of the typical sugar and cinnamon. It looked similar to a cinnamon bun, but tasted amazingly different. The "wafers" were also a neat treat; I have no idea what kind of filling was used, but it tasted like light honey or nougat. I will have to ask about the ingredients the next time I'm in. We also ordered the "Pork & Onion Pyrizhky Bun" and "All-beef Sausage in a Blanket" which tasted much like their Asian counterparts that are available at Chinese bakeries like Maxim's. During the official open, we were able to purchase a large tray of cabbage rolls, Borscht soup and Chicken Soup. I usually dread eating cabbage rolls because no matter how hard I try, I can never eat one without it unraveling. The cabbage rolls here were masterfully made, and never once did they fall apart and spill their pork fillings. Like most cabbage rolls I've eaten, the taste is subdued. Yes, there is seasoning, but it is so subtle, you really have to pause to notice them. The Borscht, even though we got take out and ate it the day after, was very good. The beets did not get soggy and mushy. There were scattered morsels of pork that contrasted well with the slightly sour taste of the soup. The chicken soup had the usual chicken, onions and carrots. The vegetables were perfectly sized and were not mushy at all, even the day after. What I found unusual about the chicken soup was that instead of noodles, there were large chunks of dough. The dough wasn't formed into balls; they didn't have any discernable shape. My wife thought they were meant to be noodles, but maybe the new staff-in-training had incorrectly processed them. The next time I visit Kozak, I will ask about it. These dough clusters tasted good nonetheless. Price-wise, this place will be competitive with some of the neighboring restaurants. For example, the tray of cabbage rolls with 10 rolls cost $17. A liter of soup will be $7.50 up to $12. Small pastries like the "Pork & Onion Pyrizhky Bun" or "All-beef Sausage in a Blanket" are $3.50. So, it is possible for two people to order and share a meal for under $25. I am really rooting for the success of Kozak. If it does well in this ghetto, it might encourage other restaurants to move in. This block originally had six Vietnamese Pho places at one time. Then, recently, another two Pho places opened up, for a total of eight. This is the first non-Vietnamese restaurant to open in recent memory, and it displaced a Pho place in doing so. If more unique restaurants get established in this neighborhood, it would be awesome to have more cultural diverse dining options. Please support Kozak in this neighborhood. read more
First time ordering from this store off of DoorDash and it was such an amazing experience with them! I'd love to come to see them in person! I love how cute the packaging came in and it was simple, but so elegant! I got cabbage rolls and it was so delicious! I tried to Wild Rose Latte, it was a little bitter but went perfectly with the rainy weather! I adore this place! Thank you to the owner and the staff! Came here on a Saturday. We ordered the honey cake and the Napoleon cake both -$ 8.35 a slice. The service was really nice and friendly. The honey cake and Napoleon cake are like nothing else you will get in this city. Both not overly sweet and both very addicting. The Napoleon cake layers were not very crispy but it goes really well with the cream. The honey cake has a very strong honey flavour to it. Not appalling but very strong. The cake itself was really soft. Both slices need to be shared with other people as they are quite large. Would recommend it for others to try. read more

I finished eating lunch nearby and noticed this eatery while walking back to my car. Homemade perogies drew me in. I bought some frozen cheese perogies to take home. I was given a sample of chocolate babka. It reminded me of a cinnamon bun, but with chocolate and tasted different. It was nice introduction to Ukrainian baked goods. This eatery had a good selection of baked goods and prepared food to take home. I wished I lived closer so I can try more items. I plan to revisit when I am in the area again. read more

Second time back to Kozak Ukrainian Eatery to pick up another take home container of Cabbage Rolls with Pork from their refrigerated section. (There was a mushroom vegan option here last trip also but none today ) Also bought some Babka sweet bread from the bakery section but they didn't survive long enough to be photographed. $22.95 for 1 kg container of deliciousness. (Got 10 good sized rolls.) Highly recommended, not worth all the effort to make at home, easier and better to just come here! Great selection of breads and baked goodies too. read more

Desserts here really surprise me and my friends. Also service is very wonderful. I have tried almond croissant, really amazing, Lots of almond butter inside, croissant with a crispy appearance. And rum chocolate is also fantastic， very rich chocolate flavor. read more
Another family-own business, Ukranian couple moved to BC few years back and opened a bakery now a restaurant that still sell specialty bread. My first time in here, well i wanted to come here long time but covid prevents me from doing so, but now they are open for dine in so i went to see and try the dishes here. they will get your phone number its like a membership then you get points that you can use to get some free stuff.Accumulates and never expires. Its a nice place with patio seating, surprisingly busy place,we came 1130st and theres already a line, mostly buying specialty bread and coffee. They have an in-house milled flour. Interior decor is Ukranian inspired, the wall was painted by some tourist spot in their country and one of the famous cathedral in Ukrain. The washroom and corridor showcases old antique sink which is very European, i saw a lot of these kind when i visited some countries in Europe. Very friendly service,no hard copy of menu its up the board liike a typical food court. Smells good inside and i noticed all plants they have inside were family of snake plant....helps purify the air...kudos to that. We tried the Hungry tatos lunch this dish includes a small borscht asour soup that is common in Eastern Europe. 2 pcs of cabbage rolls,2 pcs of potato and dill pirogies,1 pc of crepe with cabbage, sourdough bread with sour cream. We got the pork cutlet combo (Kotletki)that has a 3 pcs of pork cutlet comes with roasted potatoes and side of coleslow andhouse made sauce. We tried their French toast and for our drink we got the homemade lemonade thats already on a jar. we also bought some cinamon bread,loaf and napoleon cake. Very affordable pricing and if you are enjoying dishes from this side of Europe ,well i gezz you should try on this eatery. For me the borscht soup is realy sour,i dont eat breakfast when we came in here so its not really good for my stomach,however it is really hot and with the bread that i dipped on it it became good and tasty. The creepe i had is with meat but they serve it with veggies as well. French toast taste like other french toast from other restaurant. The pork cutlet is very good,it has a flavor that is different, the spices blends on every bite, i love it. Busy place and thats good for a business specialy during this pandemic. Noise level is average unless you chose to sit outside, clean and spacious restaurant but not huge maybe it can house approximately 15 persons. If i am not mistaken they do catering as well. this place open early because they serve breakfast. Parking is by the street and some of the residential area. No TV screen but Ukranian music is playing non-stop when we were there. Family friendly and good for kids too. They accept cash,debit and credit card. This place is different and i salute the owner for showcasing their culture by serving dishes native to Ukrain. For people who loves variety of restaurants in their lists i recommend this place. read more
