3.5 stars A unique local fusion spot with a loyal following, but plan to take your time! Kowloon Kitchen is a small Asian/Puerto Rican fusion restaurant just off Main St. in Cibolo. From the outside, it looks more like a little house than a traditional restaurant, and the dining room is on the smaller side. It was packed when we arrived around 1:30 p.m. on a Sunday, so clearly they have a following! Parking in front is very limited (maybe 3 spots) but there is ample parking behind the building, including handicapped parking and a ramp. Several of the spots in the back are specifically dedicated to the restaurant. The inside was clean, and there is also outdoor seating with fans. Unfortunately, it was too hot for my mom to comfortably sit outside, so we waited about 10 minutes for a table inside. One thing that really stood out was how easily the staff moved between English and Spanish. There were quite a few Spanish-speaking patrons, which makes sense since the restaurant is marketed as Puerto Rican/Chinese food. The menu is divided between the Chinese and Puerto Rican sides. The Chinese side has traditional American-Chinese favorites, with lunch and dinner portion sizes depending on the time of day. The Puerto Rican side includes some overlapping dishes, but also has things like Puerto Rican fried rice, which is different from their arroz chino. The Puerto Rican fried rice comes with ham, shrimp, eggs and a few other ingredients that aren't in the arroz chino. One thing to know: the lunch portions only come with arroz chino. If you want the Puerto Rican fried rice, that's a full dinner-sized entrée. They also have some Caribbean-style drinks and tostones, which I thought was a nice touch. What we ordered: I ordered the costillas with Puerto Rican fried rice. My mom really enjoyed it, but for me it was just okay. That said, I recognize that some of my opinion is probably personal preference. Americanized Chinese food isn't normally at the top of my list, and I would have liked to see a little more Puerto Rican flair throughout the menu. My sons ordered the Chinese lunch plates: one with chicken and broccoli and the other with orange chicken. Both came with arroz chino and an egg roll, and they both said their meals were good. Be prepared to wait! This is definitely not a place to go if you're trying to eat quickly. We waited approximately an hour for our food after ordering. Several people who arrived after us were served before we were. When we asked about it, we were told that they had pre-ordered their food. I'm guessing they were regulars who already knew about the wait time. The staff was as friendly and attentive as they could be considering how busy the restaurant was, so I don't fault them personally. But the wait is definitely something I'd want to know ahead of time. One thing I really didn't love was that pretty much everything was served in disposable containers -- the food, drinks, and even the wonton soup. All of the utensils were disposable as well. I know this can make things easier operationally, but the amount of single-use waste was a significant negative for me. We really need to do better when it comes to taking care of our planet, and this took the experience down a notch in my book. Overall: We stopped in because my son wanted Asian food, we like supporting local businesses, and we'd heard good things about Kowloon Kitchen. My family enjoyed it more than I did, and I can absolutely see why people return. For me, it's a 3.5-star experience. The food was fine, the staff was friendly, and I love the concept of bringing Puerto Rican and Chinese food together. I just would have liked to see more of that Puerto Rican influence in the actual food options, and the hour-long wait plus all the disposable tableware were significant negatives for me. That said, I've already told a few of my Puerto Rican friends about the restaurant because I think they'd appreciate what Kowloon Kitchen is doing. It's just not likely to become one of my regular spots -- mostly because American Chinese food simply isn't my favorite style of food. My family, however, would definitely go back. Kowloon never disappoints! We go here frequently. They have the "puertorican Chinese" food. Definitely reminds us of Chinese food back home in PR. It is really really good! They even have tostones, cola champagne, and a lot of puertorican goodies. The restaurant is small but it is very clean, inviting, and the employees are always so nice and helpful! My girlfriend is from Puerto Rico and the Chinese food there is amazing! So when we found out this place was nearby we were ecstatic! The place is in an area with other businesses and was easy to find. Once we walked in it has a somewhat tropical atmosphere and was small yet pleasant. We came a little late, so the popular dishes were sold out, so we ordered the pepper steak that was recommended by the hostess and the orange chicken. Once seated, we waited awhile for the food and it took a little longer than expected. But while waiting the guy at the register was stressed bye all the phone and online orders and kept complaining how many they were getting. I would think a business would enjoy the profit. But this guy the whole time was making smart comments over and over again for each order coming in. It made the dining experience unpleasant. Once we received the food it look great, but it tasted bland and not much flavor. And the shrimp in the rice seemed to not have any flavor. It was as if they made the rice, saw that there was no shrimp, cooked the shrimp on the side by itself and dumped it into the rice. I tried their mushroom chicken dinner special with an egg drop soup and Puerto Rican rice. The portion was huge, enough for 2-4 portions, IMO. The food was delicious and customer service was great. It was pretty busy when we went and I can see why. It was definitely worth the wait. read more

I've been 3 times to Kowloon and it has been great every time. It is the closest to Puerto Rican, from actual PR, that I have had. The Puerto Rican rice with the Carne Ahmada is the closest my family and I have tasted to PR. The only thing we wish is if they would sell an extra side of PR rice or make it in different sizes like they do in PR. U.S. Puerto Ricans love Rice! Great experience, first time back in their new location in Cibolo. Different vibe since you order from the counter now but it was a pleasant experience. Food was amazing and portions were huge. Everything we have had from them is delicious and the owners are very nice people. The egg drop soup gets 5 stars! I appreciate that they put to sweet and sour sauce on the side. The chicken was good. The egg roll filling was tasty but the outside was soft. I personally like mine crunchy. Over all I'd give it 4 out of 5 stars. The staff is nice. read more

Used to eat at the old location all the time, the food was great. This location is a disappointment. I've been there twice and maybe I will try again in about year. They had a new cashier that needed more training. Tried to order a house fried rice and I asked him what is in it, he said it was just a big bowl of rice and wanted to charge me extra for chicken, shrimp and beef. The girl came up and cleared everything up. Got my carry out order and had to look for the meat along with the popcorn shrimp pieces. Very disappointed. read more

We had high hopes that there would finally be a good Chinese restaurant in Cibolo and needless to say we were let down. The food was bland and had little to no flavor. The food was subpar. The orange chicken was so dry that it couldn't be properly chewed. The fried rice tasted like it was purchased from Costco and heated up in the microwave. The sweet and sour chicken was just ok...no peppers or onions, just the chicken. We used to go to the old kowloon's several years ago. This is nothing like that. Plus, everything is served in Styrofoam to go containers. Very tacky!! We won't be back! read more
