Koumi is perfect for a quick drive thru dinner. My food has always been delicious here (soup, chicken, steak, rice, veggies, noodles, shrimp sauce) and their tea is delicious! The line can get a little wild on a weekend night or dinner rush, but moves pretty quickly and is worth it. Prices are comparable to other drive thrus in my opinion. I started going to this restaurant during Covid thank God they were still open and now I go to at least once a week. I usually get shrimp, extra carrots and rice. I never liked carrots until eight. These glazed carrots at Kumi express unbelievable I could make a meal with just carrots alone. Next time you're passing by a Koumi Express make sure you stop to get some lcarrots. However, they also have chicken shrimp steak rice salad and everything is amazing. The drive-through is even fast for a full hibachi dinner. So many people rave about this place but I just didn't love it. I felt like the flavor had a lot to be desired and the side of carrots was different. Not good, just different. Also, as a first time customer, I called in an order and the guy said it would be ready in 15 minutes. So I got there and called them back to ask them what I was supposed to do since the line was crazy and there was nowhere to walk in to grab my order. Since he said it would be ready in 15 minutes, I waited and then came so I assumed my order was done and waiting on me. They said I had to wait in line to re-put my order in at the box and just wait in the line. So... what was the point of taking my order over the phone? And why give me a "it'll be ready time?" I'm not sure I'll try this place again but I'll report back if I do. read more

We were passing through Monroe on the way home when we found Koumi on Yelp. We wanted to try it because they had such great reviews. The reviews didn't lie, y'all! I gave them 5 stars due to the followings: 1. Location: I'm not from around here, but it was convenient from the highway. 2. Setting: the restaurant has plenty of seating with clean restrooms. Good for groups dine in. 3. Price: we thought the food was reasonably priced. We got 2 entree for roughly $20ish. 4. Food: the food was delicious and the portions were big for the price. 5. We tried Koumi on a recommendation from a coworker. After pulling up it definitely wasn't what we were expecting but the drive through line was wrapped around the building. WOWZA! Love this fast food type hibachi express! I've been eating here since I was a kid with my family and now that I'm in my twenties, I make to make a stop whenever I'm in town! This place is great for two types of people: people on the go who want to eat their food at home or in the office and people who want a casual sit down experience! They have a to go window (it can get pretty busy FYI) but their hibachi chicken with noodles are worth it!! And make sure you order a pack of spring rolls (order double what you usually order because they're that good!!) Great atmosphere to dine in as well! You stand in line to order then there are many tables to choose from to sit on the inside. They also have nice decor! I think it's very cute inside, perfect for a date night or a family night. Possibly my new go-to spot in the area for Japanese. Got there 20 min till closing, so we couldn't dine in, but placed two to-go orders of the steak and shrimp combination plates. There was the option of either the soup or salad, and we both got the soup. The wait was a little under ten minutes at best, so no complaints about the wait, then we headed back home to try it. The shrimp was absolutely delicious! Much more tender and delectable than the steak, as I found it dry and chewy, even with the soy sauce mixed in with the meal. The rice was wonderful, decently cooked and seasoned well. The soup was okay, a little lacking in flavor, but since it was miso, I won't judge too harshly. For the quality of the food, the price point, service and speed Koumi Express deserves 5 stars. This place is so consistent and has been a staple in Monroe for years. Inside they have a dining room the size of your typical drive through restaurant - and again, the service is always friendly and helpful. Drive-thru moves quickly enough if you're in a rush and don't want to go inside. The menu is pretty simple with different teriyaki and hibachi entrees served with rice and veggies. I was first introduced to Koumi in Durham, NC and I was an instant fan. Therefore, seeing this restaurant in Monroe, NC brought me utter joy. This location does not disappoint. The service is fantastic, they are quick, and food is as good as ever. In general, Koumi tends to be more of a casual atmosphere. It is not the type of hibachi joint where the chef will cook it in front of you but the food still comes out piping hot. If you dine in, you will place your order at the register and then they will bring the food to your table. The food tastes and looks fresh, especially the veggies and the shrimp. They also have this amazing carrot side that comes with the combination plates. The carrots are slightly sweet and oh so delicous. The price is comparable to a typical asian dish. I usually order the combination plate with chicken and shrimp for ~$12. The portion is large so I will tend to have leftovers or leave super stuffed. Cannot wait for my next visit! read more
