Eighteen years ago I used to come here for lunch once a week when I worked nearby at 10 West 46th street but i had not been here since. Then today I attended a conference nearby and decided to pay them a visit. The restaurant still looks the same - well maybe a bit cleaner - but I was somewhat taken back how it was half empty at 12:30 PM on a Thursday. Back then I'd come here for the cholent which at the time was pretty flavorful but today because I can get good cholent in my neighborhood in Brooklyn, I decided to taste their shwarma. Unfortunately I was disappointed. The meat was rather bland compared to the well seasoned shwarma I used to eat at Famous Pita in Brooklyn (before they closed) and in Haifa, Jerusalem and Tel Aviv in Israel (though I must admit it is a lot cheaper to get to Kosher Deluxe from Brooklyn than to Haifa!). The included array of vegetables were plentiful but a bit under seasoned. On the positive side, the tahini was flavorful and the hot sauce (which I only had because the customer in front of me requested it tipping me off to ask as well) had a nice kick to it. The $10 falafel sandwich with complimentary salad bar did the job but unfortunately was not particularly good. Albeit not terrible, there are so many falafel options throughout the city, from local based shops to chain restaurants, that I feel I must be critical. The falafel did not have much flavor except salty and fried. The green in my falafel was missing completely. They slather some hummus on the pita which provided some creamy flavor but there was no tzatziki or hot sauce. I took some of the mango sauce to go but once I smelled it, I decided to skip, just didn't seem fresh or natural. The salad bar was decent but I just didn't enjoy it. Maybe it was the seasonings or quality of the ingredients, something was off. The sweet potatoes were good but the eggplant just tasted oily. There are tables and chairs available for sit down but I just took my food to go. I would've been happy to find a local gem near my office but Kosher Deluxe just doesn't cut it in my opinion. Yuckaroo. I've been a bit under the weather and got it in my head that I needed matzoh ball soup ASAP. Headed over to Kosher Deluxe with high hopes...hopes that were quickly and utterly destroyed when I took my first bite. The soup tasted canned and had one of the sorriest matzoh balls I've ever seen; tiny, fractured, and dense. They also gave me a small bag of stale bread to throw in. Nice accompaniment! My girl's pastrami sandwich came on "rye bread" that had terribly soft crust and stuck to the roof of your mouth like Wonder Bread. The meat tasted pre-packaged and not fresh sliced like most delis. Overall...heinous. I kicked myself for not walking out the door immediately after seeing chicken nuggets, lo mein, and sushi on the menu board. This combo of items in any single restaurant is, without a doubt, the clearest possible sign that you are about to experience an utter catastrophe for the taste buds. Oh, and for what it's worth...this place smells and the floor and tables are filthy. I have to wonder, are the people rating this 3 stars or better doing so because it's good Kosher food or simply good food? I work a couple blocks away, so I starting going to Kosher Deluxe about once a week for the past few months. I usually ordered a burger, and occasionally, I would bite into an unidentifiable piece of something hard or gristly, but I usually let that slide, because it's quick and easy. Also, because I never had to deal with them messing up my order before. Unfortunately, that was not the case last Friday. I ordered a burger as I have previously, with no pickles or ketchup, and I checked the printout when I picked it up to make sure, as I always do. However, when I arrived back at work, lo and behold both ketchup and pickles were present, and my lunch ruined. My lunch break is not flexible, so I had no time to return to the store. I figured oh well, it happens. I'll just call them and see what they are willing to do. What a disaster. I could not believe how rude the lady I spoke to on the phone was after I told her what happened. She first told me I would have to go back and return the burger before they would do anything, because they didn't believe me. When I told her this was not possible, because I did not have enough time on my lunch break, she put me on hold while she went to get a manager. She never put the manager on the phone, though, instead she simply told there was nothing they could do, even when I asked for a credit instead of a refund. I then offered to send them pictures, because I am adamant when people think I am lying. She gave me an email to send the photos to, and she said they would credit my card after verifying them. Then, she gave a brief, insincere apology (the first I'd gotten out of the entire call), and hung up. I sent the email and have gotten no response and no credit. I've decided to upload the pictures here in an effort to warn others to stay away from this establishment. read more

Only have had delivery from this place. The order was done through seamless.com and so no worries there. Food came piping hot and very quickly might add. Ordered their cholent, side order of stuffed derma and a matzo ball soup. The broth was absolutely delicious! Not too salty and definitely not bland. I liked that the noodles still had a little bite to them and weren't just soggy mush. The one complaint I did have was that the motzo ball itself was TINY! delicious but come on people make the ball bigger please! Stuffed Derma was very good and so was the accompanying gravy. Wasn't too dry by itself and had a nice texture. The Cholent was again satisfying but nothing like homemade. It wasn't as sweet as I like from a homemade one, but still very palatable. This place has some bangin' shawarma. It's definitely the best I've had in midtown. Can't go wrong with the falafel either. Side note: Coolest motto in midtown? They hand you a little plastic container and you can fill it till it's bulging open with whatever veggies you want. I am addicted to their shwarma, so I go here for lunch at least once a week. Shwarma is roasted lamb from a skewer; it's a mediterranean thing. The guy behind the counter (right at the door when you walk in ) is very skilled at preparing the food on the spot, he's like a machine and you can tell he's been doing it for a while. The rest of their menu is not very good, don't even bother, just go for: "Shwarma on a baguette with humus and hot sauce to go". And don't forget to grab some mediterranean salads too. This place makes the best shwarma!! The falafel is very good too. I have only ordered those two items because they are so good I would hate myself if I ordered anything else. The area right inside the door is where you order and I always get the shwarma on baguette with hummus and hot sauce. The guy at the counter has been making these for many years and does it like he could do it in his sleep, the man is a shwarma making machine!! They have a ton of great self serve salads that you can load up on included with your sandwich; pickles, cukes & onions, spicy tomatoes, slaw, hot peppers, pickled beets, red cabbage, etc. Ask for some of the homemade hot sauce, it's behind the counter and adds an intense but delicious kick to the shwarma. Plenty of seating in the cafeteria-like eating area, it's short on ambiance much like the whole place. In the back of this place they sell everything from Chinese to burgers, obviously kosher, and if you're coming for sushi or fried chicken check the other reviews, all I know is the counter in the front with the shwarma and falafel dishes out some of the best sandwiches I've ever had!!!! We (co-workers) stopped in here for lunch and it was fine. Decor: It's a standard deli-ish lunch spot - food serving stations, salad bar, plenty of tables. It doesn't give off the most "clean" vibe, but it isn't, by any means, visibly dirty. In fact, all the tables were perfectly clean and a guy actually came around to throw away our trash (impressive). Bathroom: didn't use it (if there is one...) Staff: Everyone was pretty straight business but the guy who cleaned up our trash (not sure if he was going out of his way or they always do this) was very nice. Food: We all had the shawarma + salad bar and it was pretty solid. The sauces they had were pretty tasty as well. They seem to have a pretty extensive menu so I wonder what the other food is like... Just a review of the falafel... to go: *YUM!* I could really taste the chickpeas; this is a tan-colored falafel, not green. A whole pile of it comes in a big, spongy pita, with hummus. You can fill up your pita and a small plastic bowl they give you with fixin's from the bar: eggplant, health salad, pickles, various slaws, etc. Your basic Israeli-style falafel. Not too bad. Came for the infamous pita/gyro/shwarma + salad buffet. Came out to $13 after tax. The shwarma meat is real flavorful lamb (i think) right off the rotisserie skewer. The wrap/pita comes with hummus and meat which was nice - no fillers. They give you a plastic container (if you order 'to go') that can hold about 1lb of salad bar food that's included. The salad bar had a decent mix of about 8 items. 3 different slaws, baked eggplant, cucumber salad, pickles, peppers, and some other stuff. The slaws and eggplant were real good. So if you plug in the numbers you're essentially getting a lamb pita for $7 (the usual rate) and then a lb of salad for $5. Either the owner or manager was Unfriendly. I'm an israeli jew with tattoos that are visible and as soon as I walked in I can tell I was being judged and stared at. Ordered 2 patato burekas they heated it up in the microwave and was charged $9.65 They were soggy and the patato filling was bland. I was so angry and wanted to go back but I chose to write this review instead. Decided to go out for a late bite to eat with a few friends who frequent kosher eateries. Decided to get the chicken sesame chicken even though it had a (highway robbery) price of $25!!!! Twenty-five dollars!! I specifically ordered it in a to-go box cuz I knew I wasn't going to be able to eat it all in one sitting, & I wanted to save myself a trip back to the counter. The food comes out, and I stay at the table and watch the belongings of the group. My friend brings me my food, and my tray contains my order on a styrofoam plate, along with an empty to-go container. Okay, totally valid, I completely understand forgetting to pack it up!! THEN my friend let me know that the container was old and reused. The server half assed rinsed it out and then handed it to over to give to me. The container looks oily and gross and USED! And I just paid $25!!! 25 dollars!!! So I politely go up to the counter and I say: "hi, can I please have a new container? This one is reused, and is dirty". And the man starts YELLING AT ME "THIS IS A PERFECTLY GOOD CONTAINER!!!". So I calmly reply "can I please have a new container? I see you have a stack of fresh containers." He replies (yelling): "WHATS YOUR PROBLEM??? It's perfectly fine! You want me to just waste money and give you a different container, when this one is perfectly fine? What am I going to do with this container now?? What do you expect me to do??". I said: "I don't know what you are going to do with that container, but I am a paying customer here and I would like a new container" ($25.00!!!!). He then practically throws the container at me across the counter!! The AUDACITY! I wanted to take my expensive food home, and I wasn't going to place it in that receptacle. Great place for a quick fast-food lunch. The restaurant reminds me of a food court, and the atmosphere is very plain, but then again this isn't where you go for a leisurely sit-down meal. Service was FAST, around 5 minutes from ordering to eating. They have American, Israeli & Chinese cuisine to choose from (got to love the Jewish palate), and I got just a burger which was very good. I also got some chicken noodle soup which was actually really impressive; better than the same type of soup I ordered the night before at a much more upscale restaurant. Our firm had some lunch catered from here and I was impressed since kosher catered food never impresses me... But this was... Deluxe. (I'm great with words). I liked the grilled chicken skewer platter I had since it was filling and seasoned well enough, but the Israeli salad (which a lot of people consider Turkish and its just cucumbers and tomatoes chopped up) was very very bland and the quality of tomatoes was just not good-- no lemon juice, herbs or salt even!! What? But why? Anyways, the chicken was a BIT pink- not undercooked but pink and I can't stomach that even though it was very tasty (maybe if it was dark I would have eaten it all). Great glatt kosher take out food. Wide variety of dishes-traditional "heimish" meat dishes like roasts and cholent, great chinese dishes, deli sandwiches, burgers, shawarma, falaffel and steaks. You can eat in the restaurant though don`t expect more than a "mc donald`s" or canteen type of atmosphere. Take out and door to door delivery are also possible. The restaurant now does make sushi platters on demand-have not tried them. When I was there the food was fresh, of great taste and very reasonably priced. (for Manhattan and Glatt kosher!) read more
