It seems like this place has been a gem for many years. Specialising in Malaysian cuisine, what you will find here is cheap tasty eats. Noodles & Laksa are the house faves. It's generally what I see everyone eating here. The restaurant set up is kind of old and messy. But I guess it is more of a quick eat for lunch type of place. Going with the chefs recommendation, I went for the Fried Mee Hoon with vermicelli noodles. Great option for those who are gluten intolerant. All noodle dishes and laksa can be made with vermicelli noodles. The dish was made fast, so if you are in a rush this is a good spot. Nice smoky wok flavour though the noodles, fresh chicken and bbq pork. Although frozen style prawns were tossed through. I really only like fresh prawns, so that was a bit disappointing. But, the dish was good overall. Look, this is not my favourite place for food in the markets. But a good option if want to avoid the food halls, get something fast and cheap!

It is, as has been said, quite busy at lunch time but I've never had to wait more than 5 minutes to sit down. They also do takeaways if you prefer that option. oh and the service is quick. The little chilli padi is by no means fancy but will definitely hit the spot if your after malay flavours such as roti canai and curry chicken, nasi lemak, kway teo and dumplings. There were a lot of people collecting large quantities of take away which leads me to believe the little chilli padi is a regular following for locals! We will certainly go back if not for the affordable prices for the delicious meals. They also have a selection of authentic desserts and malay drinks you would find on the streets of KL but struggle too in other restaurants in Adelaide. Good source of lightings from the downlights coupled with 3 decorative lamps combined to bring a nice relaxing ambience to the place. There are pictures of different types of chillies to bring home the point of 'spice' (as their name suggest). However, even though I said that the ambience is relaxing, when the crowd starts arriving, the place is noisy... like really noisy .. you will really need to talk a bit loudly than you normally would in order to get yourself heard. Today's crowd is comparably less crowded and it's still noisy. When you enter into the restaurant, they will bring you to a table as well as the menu. Choices galore on the menu on the front and back. Once you've decided what you wanted to eat, you can make your way to the counter and make your order. You would have to pay on the spot. The cashier on duty has good grasp of english and knowledgeable on their food on the menu. I've overheard her conversation with the customer before me where she explained the difference between the 'normal' laksa and the Sarawak laksa listed on their board. I made my orders shortly after. It was quick. The food though took awhile to arrive. To be fair, the cashier did politely inform me before I made my orders that they are fairly busy, and there will be a 'slightly' longer than usual wait. Anyhoo. The drinks were served first. Milo Dinosaur and Teh Tarik. Dinosaur is cold milo topped with milo powder. (They also have the Milo Godzilla which is topped with icecream.) Teh tarik is pulled froth milk tea (wonder if that's the right description :/) The taste are alrighty. Nothing too fancy, or really blows me away. Next came the entree dish - Deep fried fish balls. I like the taste, reminds me of the fishballs I can buy back in Singapore's pasar malam(street market). The beef nasi lemak came. That's my wife dinner. I had tasted a bit. Good coconut aroma from the rice. That's a plus. The rendang beef is indeed spicy. And slight salty, but tasty. Coupled with the hard boil egg, sliced cucumbers and ikan billis, her dinner is a fair 4 star. My dinner came last. Beef hor fun. First impression. Not enough chopped green chilli served together, one look and I can see 3 chopped pieces only.. I mean, what's the point then. :/ This is served with some bak choy and slice beef. They are all stirred fried together. The beef is chewy, but not too hard. Still ok. It's the sauce that I'm not really a fan of. It's fairly watery, resulting in a rather bland taste tonight. I would say that the portion is rather small also. Overall, I would say that the beef hor fun at Nanyang (if that place is still around, I haven't swing by for a while now.. haha) is way better. Overall, considering the good and meh. This is definitely a place I would still visit. First, it's down southern end from the city, which is nearer to where I live, plus the choices of south east asian food definitely means that I can try other food as well. I'm not a good spice eater, but good spicy food are rather hard to come by in this city. So yeah, I'll be back. :)

I've been a longtime regular of my old faithful and have decided I need to open my eyes a little. Given Pho Ba Ria 2's ridiculously amazing reviews on the ol'Yelpy, Bestie and I decided it was definitely on the list. Hmm... and this is where it gets controversial. I'm just not sold. The food, the service, the setting... none adds up to 5 stars for me here... it's 3.5 at best. Whilst I loved the menu (bilingual with a huge selection... particularly of drinks!), I didn't leave thinking the food was anything amazing. I ordered the Bun Bo Hue (spicy beef & pork soup) (large $12.50), whilst B ordered a combination pho and we both ordered 3 Bean Drink, because that stuff is like lumpy, liquid-y heaven. Sadly the pho lacked depth of flavour, and even after drowning it in lemon juice and a dash of soy to help with seasoning it was lacklustre. The spicy soup was really hard to eat as the spices were too fine to push to the side, but not fine enough to swallow, which left my mouth and throat full of chomped up lemongrass stems... usually I will pretty much drink every last mouthful, but this soup was pushed aside once I'd finished the noodles and the non-gristly parts of meat. Finally, the 3 bean drink ($5) that we were so very excited about was really sweet compared to others I've tried, the ice was chunky which made it hard to mix. Still tasty mind you... just not 5 star worthy. Maybe we got them on a bad night. But given their prices are a little dearer than their competitors I doubt I'll be back to check.

Renown for their dosas (crisp savoury lentil crepes served with vegetable stew and chutney) within the Adelaidean sub-continental community, however their pav bhaji (spicy vegetables in a tomato sauce served with a toasted buttered bun, raw onions and pickle) is my ultimate junk food: eaten with fingers, scaldingly hot, savoury and moreish. Their butter paneer masala is superior to most butter chicken dishes in Adelaide, with generous cubes of paneer and a sweet spicy sauce for dipping assorted naan breads. Desserts here are highly recommended by those who can appreciate Indian sweets: their housemade jalebi (funnel cakes soaked in sugar syrup) is reputedly often bought by the kilo on the weekends.
