I purchased a brand new SD card reader for my laptop, and it ended up corrupting the files on 2 of my SD cards to where it said I couldn't retrieve them. Computer runs the world, so of course my computer crashed. I took the laptop to get it fixed. They quoted me at $120, so I said fine because all the other places charge about the same price. Next thing I know, I got a call about recovery data from my hard drive for $1000! On top of that, I got chared a $45 diagnostic fee. Are you kidding me?! So I went back there to grab my stuff, and decided to see if they can lower the price. I started to talk to the owner (chinese guy named Brian or Ryan) about my problem. He was a slick talker (must of been a salesman) and started going on and on about scratching noises. Of course, not knowing anything about computers, I said yes. I plugged the hard drive to the SATA to USB drive, plugged the USB to my computer, and made it my secondary drive. All my data showed up! Wow this guy is amazing!! He was able to restore my hard drives that crashed and failed in a matter of 1 day!!! Yes! When I spoke with my IT person he said that it would be $2000-$3000 to retrieve all of my information!!! when I called around the places they recommended they told me that they would look to see how much information needed to be retrieved and what parts needed replacement and not till then they would be able to give me a price! I moved and Comcast screwed up my home network so my wireless printer wouldn't work. Of course my go to search for help was on Yelp. Sometimes you get bent over a barrell and you just have to clench your teeth and take it, because you gotta do what you gotta do. That's how your wallet is going to feel after visiting konicom, but they make the experience as pain free as possible and will do what they promise. My wife's micro sd card died and she lost a buch of her photos from when she was pregnant and from our babys first 4 months. I tried to do the data recovey myself, but the one piece of software that could actually read the card took forever to check the card for recoverable data. I eventially gave up when the card wouldn't even open in recovery software anymore and googled data recovery services in town. Konicoms website looked a little suspect, but they had a lot of positive reviews and they had an actual office, which made me feel a lot better. No data no cash is their motto, so if they cant recover you dont pay. They also have a sliding scale, so the price they quote will be reduced depending on the percentage of data they recover. Its worth letting them try to recover for you, since you have nothing to lose since they do a free assessment. The office is surprisingly nice and in a relatively convenient area. The staff is nice and they are honest in their assessment, but their prices are a little high. That's ok though, because they know whatever data you are asking them to recover must be pretty valuable to you. I told them what was wrong and what i wanted to recover. They did a quick assessment and told me they thought they could do it, but would do a further assessment and call me with the results and a quote. Luckily, they were confident they could recover. It would cost 200 bucks and take them a few days. Seemed a little steep, bit i wanted that data! Throughout the process konicom was nice and responsive. I got all my data back, so i left happy. The only issue i had was i felt like this was something i might have been able to do myself for a lot less if I had more time and patience, since from what I observed the recovery was done using software only. This place was just terrible. First of all there is no sign outside so it's really easy to drive right on past. That's the easiest problem to fix with this place though. I went in and talked to Roy because my computer had just powered down for no reason and wouldn't turn back on. I'm not a computer guru, but I have a decent knowledge of computers, so normally I would have investigated myself. Unfortunately I was right in the middle of finals and had absolutely no time to do anything. I brought my laptop in, we try to turn it on, and it turns on! (we discovered later the problem was a loose piece inside, so the drive to this place must have rattled it back.) I Had some very critical files on the computer for my finals I am in, so I asked him not to touch anything while I went to my car to get a flash drive to copy the info. When I got back, he had removed the battery, back cover, and CD drive and was poking around inside. I was furious because he had agreed not to touch it until I could grab my flash drive. Thank god it was still able to turn on. Anyway, after that, we see it was stupidly simple, just a few of the unnecessary metal clasps had gotten loose and touched the hard drive, which shut itself down to protect itself. Ok, so we remove the clasps, but there are some others there that aren't loose. This guy was poking and prodding them so much I was afraid he was going to knock them out. The longer I was there, the more I think this guy doesn't actually know a lot about computers. Plus, as Bob H. mentioned, he was convinced we were going to have to dig deep into the computer to check for more problems (even though it was already working) for another hefty sum of money. Oh yeah and one last thing, he dismantled my computer not only without my permission, but also without telling me that just unscrewing one screw to remove the back cover was an automatic $45 charge for "a diagnostic." I have a similar story to some of the reviews here... I went to look for some photos on an external hard drive just to find out that everything on the drive was missing except for 1 folder. We thought about buying software to see if that could recover the data, but decided not to risk it (being family photos and whatnot), and instead found Konicom through Yelp. Took the drive in one day, had them call us back the next with the results, and after the weekend they called back saying we could pick everything up. It was pricier than I would have wanted to pay, but like someone else said, a lesson in duplicate back-ups of important files. And here I thought, after 35 years in the IT business that a disk really wouldn't be totally disabled. WRONG! ...I let an important PC at our house go without backup. Then the SATA drive ground to a halt - boot sector failure. And NO, you cannot just re-jumper a SATA drive to be a non-booting 'slave' drive. Which brought me to Konicom. These guys were great with my data recovery. I recently brought in a damaged 2TB external hard drive full of priceless family photos and none of the files would load or open on any computer. It had also made a buzzing noise. They told me they would diagnose the drive and they called me within hours after dropping it off. They told me that it would take a day or two to recover the lost data, which it did. Once upon a time, I dropped my laptop and the screen no longer wanted to light up. I drove past Konicom several times so i decided to give them a shot. I brought my computer in and they kept it overnight, I had a feeling my back light had been broken. I received a phone call and was told that the repair bill would be $165. With little to no options I approved the price. The next day I picked up my machine and it was fixed. I asked what was wrong and they told me that the wire that powers the screen came undone and they had to tear deep into the machine to get it fixed. Fast forward to yesterday. I once again dropped my computer on the floor and the same thing happened. This time I decided grab a screwdriver and investigate myself. To make a long story short I removed the battery and about 6 screws. And fixed the machine myself. There was noting mystic and nothing that required me to dig deep into the computer to find the problem. I am an IT Consultant from the Bay Area. One of my clients, who has a 3 HDD Raid 5 server, had 2 of the hard drives corrupt at the exact same time. We also found out the our online backup solution hasn't been backing up for 2 months. In a panic, I was recommended Konicom Inc. Excellent service. I damaged my WD external hard drive's USB connection port so I bought a new enclosure to transfer the hard drive. When I connected the hard drive with the new enclosure to my computer, the computer did not recognize it. Long story short, I ended up accidentally formatting the thing which erased all my valuable data. I turned the drive into Konicom to recover it. It turns out the original WD hard drive was encrypted so I was told this protected my files even though I had formatted it. They were able to recover all my data. "if the problem is the charging port, the price to fix it is about $135. ($50 part and $85 labor) you can bring it in to us and we can confirm the problem for you. If it is battery issue, you can go to ebay and buy one online." This was the first message we received from Bryan after asking for a quote for a repair for charging issues for a Tablet. Which sounds promising, hence why we proceeded to arrange for a time for us to drop off the tablet and even went as far as have a remote payment method settled. Everything seemed to go well until we actually took the Tablet in. Immediately upon looking at the Tablet we were told "We don't fix tablets, only data retrieval". Given it was not Bryan who was at the counter at that time, we thought it might have been a misunderstanding. After all, why would we get quoted a price for tablet repair if they don't repair Tablets. Immediately we contacted Bryan and he called me back. This was the story that he told us. He said that "his mechanic was able to take a in depth look at the problem with the charging (I'm not sure how in depth one can be just by looking at the Tablet from the outside and plugging a charger into it) and had determined that it DEFINITELY was not a charging port issue. Upon realizing that, from their he concluded that it must be a problem with the motherboard and it would be too expensive to fix, thus he continued to encourage us to replace the tablet and offered us the data recovery option seeing no other options." Except they failed to explain to us anything about the above mentioned processes when we were there and simply said "We don't fix Tablets, only data recovery." Which sounds to me like a lie to cover up a lie. But let's just say their statement holds up, his mechanic is indeed an expert in Tablet diagnostic and was able to diagnose the issue with the charging within 2 minutes. I have since taken the tablet to another repair shop, and have gotten it back fully working. The issue was not with the motherboard. They simply replaced the charging port and it charged right back up. read more
