We recently moved from the LA area to Citrus Heights. My office in downtown LA was right across the street from a hole in the wall Persian restaurant with exceptional food. I was despairing that I would find such cuisine here in the Sacramento area. Boy, was I wrong! Kolbeh Kabob has a wonderful ambience, a welcoming staff, and best of all, the food is even more wonderful than I had grown used to in Southern California! My wife had the chicken kabob and I had the koobideh, and they were both out of this world in terms of flavor, quality, and quantity. The meats were delicious, the rice as flavorful and delicate as any I can recall, and we never had to hunt a waitress down for a refill on our iced tea. Highly recommended! ok.. to be honest, I was pretty skeptical of this place at first. It's located in a sketchy area right across from Winco next to a liquor store.. a LIQUOR store! Need I say more? But, since Orangevale has limited food options, what the heck- Holy Shishkabob! This place left me feening to go back the next day.. First visit: (1) Pita bread basket with feta cheese and herbs - Warm and fresh in a sizable amount.. it could be called an appetizer itself (2) Bademjan Borani: eggplant with tomato and yogurt sauce Looks like someone threw up on the plate, but tastes AWWSOME! Drooling just thinking about it.. There was so much flavor depth to it. This dish is the reason I come back here (3) Chicken Sultani plate: combo of chicken barg (grilled chicken) & chicken koobideh (Spicy chicken) Came with saffron rice and roasted tomatoes. OMG the rice was like eating butter. It was so fluffy and airy and melted in my mouth. Not a fan of rice, but I could eat a bucket of this alone. The koobideh.. ehh.. weird texture. It was like they pounded out the meat and mushed it back together into a log. Flavor was muted.. mildly spicy. The barg was as good as grilled chicken can get. Tender, smoky, chickeny.. Second visit: (1) What?! No pita bread basket?? So I guess it doesn't come complimentary.. only if you order an entrée. Boo.. lost points. (2) Dolmen: rice wrapped in grapeleaves with barberries Tried this appetizer because it sounded unique. Thought it would be similar to the Vietnamese grapeleaf-wrapped meat that my mom used to make. Uh wrong! The grapeleaves were overpowering. All I could taste was the sourness of the leaves. The rice filling had no flavor and the overall texture was.. no texture at all? Definitely an acquired taste. Third visit: (1) Steak Sultani: combo of filet mignon & steak koobideh They ran out of mignon so swapped to ribeye instead. Well... nice swap. the ribeye was cooked correctly.. med-rare seared like I asked. Super tender and delish. Points redeemed! still not a fan of koobideh though. Same texture, but tasted gamey like lamb (2) Baklava We ordered "one piece" but it came out as two 3 inch squares, still warm as if they just took it out the oven. Tucked away in a shabby strip mall off Greenback in a section of Orangevale that has little to offer in the way of dining options, Kolbeh Kabob is actually worth driving across town for. Pretty thorough Persian menu, with beef, chicken, vegetarian and seafood options. And, thankfully, my favorite eggplant appetizer (Kashke Bademjan). So good I wonder why I don't order this alone for takeout. Although I've tried a few things here (all fantastic) I love the chicken koobideh kabob the best. Dinner entree (2 kabobs and a load of rice) is entirely too much food, so I always leave with leftovers. Good value for your money. If you're more adventurous, I would recommend the Fesanjan as well. Yum. This isn't Famous Kabob but it's definitely the best Persian cuisine you are going to find around for miles. read more

Although I liked my lunch for the most part, I do have a few suggestions for the owner. Let's get these out of the way first: 1. If you are going to make pita bread a focal point in your restaurant by bringing out a ton of fresh herbs to go with it -shouldn't the pita bread itself be good? FYI- The bread was stale, disappointing and flavorless. Perhaps that is why it is served with more herbs than we as customers know what to do with. What happens to the leftover herbs? Do the same unused herbs that we touched get passed on to the next table? Great idea--poor execution. 2. The lentil soup was way too thick to be considered a soup. Perhaps this would be better served as a spread for the stale pita bread, or glue for my kid's art project at school. The "soup "didn't taste bad, but it didn't taste all that great either. It was kind of like putting your tongue on a 9-volt battery. In other words, it was a weird experience. 3. I showed up with a coupon that I found online (that did not have expiration date) that said if you pay for 2 drinks, and one entree ,you receive the 2nd entree half- off. However, when I tried to use it, I was told that that coupon was old, and was no longer valid. Not only did the server not honor the coupon, she didn't offer me a free appetizer, dessert or anything. I felt that this was a situation where the restaurant could have stepped up and made our visit special instead of flat out refusing to honor the coupon. For lunch, I opted for the chicken kabob (breast) -served with a bed of basmati rice and a flame broiled tomato. The chicken was marinated wonderfully in what I would consider a tomato -based sauce. The problem I had was that some of the smaller pieces of chicken were a little overdone. However, I would rather deal with over-cooked chicken than the alternative. My only suggestion would be to make sure the pieces are all the same size so that they cook evenly. Despite the slight inconvenience, this didn't stop me from putting down every last bit of food. *** TIP-Ask for some chile sauce to go with the kabob. My wife ordered the beef koobideh which is ground beef mixed with onions and spices -served with basmati rice and a tomato. In my opinion, this was the best version of this dish that I have ever tried. The beef was seasoned perfectly, and not overcooked like the chicken I ordered. *** TIP -This dish is part of their lunch specials during the week ($8.99). Bottom line, I ate too much on my visit. Everything looked so good on the menu - I couldn't help myself. We will definitely come back during the week for their lunch specials. Their regular menu prices are a bit too high for my liking -especially for a family of 5. However, if I could find a valid coupon online -I would come back tomorrow. read more

On my first visit I came here with a party of 8 for dinner on a Friday night. It was pretty busy as just about all of the tables were full. There were only two waitresses bless their hearts that were working as fast as they can and the small kitchen was churning out food as fast as they could too. Our waitress was very friendly and accommodating. We waited over 1.5 hours for our meal to be served so it's a good thing we had a good party and there is a belly dancer to distract and entertain everyone so even though we were really hungry we still had a good time. So just know if you arrive during the dinner rush you will probably have to wait for your food and be patient with the slow service because they're all doing the best they can. When the food came out it was worth it. I ordered the lamb shish kabob which was cooked perfectly as was the veggie kabob that it came with. The rice was light and fluffy. Overall I was happy. Everyone was happy with their food too. Most of them got the all koobideh (one of each meat) and I tried the chicken and it was delicious! They said they usually go to Famous Kabob and this was as good if not better. Compliments to the chefs! And Kolbeh doesn't charge a gratuity for large parties! I'm glad because that enabled me to give them 23% for their hard work and excellent even though busy service. We're definitely excited to come back. read more

Chicken koobideh- Ground chicken skewer had an overpowering spiced flavor I can't put my finger on. I liked this the least, 2 stars. Chicken thigh kabobs- Grilled whole, boneless chicken thighs. This is the first time I've seen middle eastern chicken kabobs not having paprika, saffron or sumac to color it. It tasted like it was seasoned with only salt and pepper. It tasted good but didn't look good. I've had it much more moist and tender elsewhere, hence 3 stars. I was waited on frequently but didn't get as friendly of service I had hoped for and accustomed to for the culture, so average here too. Prices for lunch are decent at around $10-$12. What does a 3 star review from me really mean? 1 star- One of the worst! Will never return! 2 stars- Below average. Very unlikely to return. 3 stars- Average. Will not make specific plans to return but may visit again if a friend wanted to go or if I'm in the area. 4 stars- I'm a fan. I have enjoyed eating here for several years. Love the herbs, pita, and goat cheese. I usually get the chicken thigh kabob dinner. My only consistent complaint is how they insist on overcooking the meat until it is completely dry. I usually ask for them to cook it less and sometimes they comply and it is still juicy and soft. Today I was going to ask again but overheard the young server telling another table NO! we only cook meat well done. Chicken is done at 165 degrees cooking it longer is lowering the quality of your product. read more

My parents had recommended Famous Kabob to us in Sacramento. But after reading the reviews about the customer service, I knew that I couldn't give them my patronage. I am fed up of Persian Restaurants with poor, entitled, customer service. FYI: I am Persian myself. Long story short: my husband and I decided to go to Kolbeh Kabob instead because the customer service reviews were good, the rating was good, and the food looked very good from the pictures. We pulled up and the parking was confusing. But we figured it out and ended up greeted at the door, and seated promptly. We ordered: Chenge Kabob, Koobideh Kabob, Zereshk Polo, Kashk e Bademjoon and Tadig with Ghemeh, and mast o muoseer The Kabobs were wonderful. Truly. 5 stars. The Zereshk Polo was just Zereshk on top of regular rice. So it was disappointing. The Ghemeh and Tadig were great. But the stew is made with lamb and not beef, which may not be to everyone's tastes. 5 stars. And I just have to stop ordered Kashk e Bademjoon because it's always disappointing unless my mother or I make it. Not enough tart Kask or garlic. But when I put some Mast o Mouseer on it, it worked out fine. So 3 stars for that, and 5 stars for the Mast. INSIDER TIP: They will let you buy the sangak bread next door and take it in and they will service the kabob with it! Highly recommend doing so. Overall, this place is as good as it gets. read more

The ultimate Persian Kabob place! Everything here is done exquisitely. The decor is charming, the service is impeccable, the flavors taste so homemade and lovingly done. It happens to be Easter and for some reason we were craving lamb kebab. We have been here several times and never been disappointed. It's worth going just for the saffron rice and roasted vegetable kabob. But every meat is done beautifully. There are plenty of fish and vegetarian options as well. The lamb shish kabob melts in your mouth. The ground meat kabobs are seasoned just the right amount. The side platter of hummus, pita bread and herbs is so special. My daughter asked me how many stars I was going to give it on Yelp and I said I only wish I could give more than 5. The aroma when you walk in the door is mesmerizing. They have a wonderful Persian Tea and a full wine selection. The portions are extremely generous, and the servers are truly caring. Today we had Raz and her service was excellent as usual. The place just has a welcoming and family feel to it. All the ingredients taste so fresh, and they really know what they're doing with seasoning. The place is immaculate and today happened to be not only Easter but also a Persian holiday, the 13th day after the Persian New Year. It's always fun to learn about other cultures and bridge that cultural divide. Food is the universal language :-) Give it a try, you will leave with enough leftovers for 3 days and a new appreciation for Middle Eastern cuisine.
