I LOVE kolaches. They are one of my very most favorite baked goodies. When traveling to the area, I KNEW I had to get my hands on some of these bad boys as they are a Texas specialty. Kolache Kitchen appeared to be the best reviewed purveyor of these bread shaped dreams, and, though we already had a great lunch to eat, my sister and I made our way here to see what was available. KK doesn't look like much from the outside, and appears even worse from the inside, but these are often characteristics of my favorite businesses, and I ain't lookin' for ambiance at a bakery! Their sad case displayed just a few varieties of sweet kolaches, but then I asked if they had sausage rolls available, and the kind employee said they had loads! I guess they keep them separate (and heated!), so don't just assume you are limited to what you can see. Excitedly, we ended up ordering two of each meat variety (available as 5 or 2 1/2 inch), a coconut roll, and on a whim, a box of day old, half priced fruit kolaches 'cause why not? We took everything back to my sister's house, and commenced stuffing our faces. The rolls were individually wrapped in paper and marked with a letter: "S" for sausage, "C" for sausage and cheese, and "P" for jalapeño, sausage, and cheese. The ham and cheese is a different shape, and unmarked. They use local Slovacek sausage, and it is fantastic: juicy and flavorful, but not too salty. We loved everything, with jalapeño winning overall favorite. It is spicy, but not overly so. They use American cheese, which I do not prefer, but it is perfect in this application. The ham & cheese was also excellent. We heated up the day old kolaches in a 350 degree oven for about ten minutes, and it really softened them up. At about 50 cents a piece it's a steal, and while I'm sure the fresh ones are superior, we were perfectly happy with these. I tried apple, prune, and apricot, the latter of which was my favorite. The coconut roll had bits of flaked coconut rolled within the wonderfully yeasty bread, and it was not too sweet in the best way, but unfortunately dry. I almost wonder if it was day old as well, though it was not designated as such. Prices are super reasonable with sweet varieties for $1.30 each, sausage rolls ranging $1.45 to $3.25 each, depending on size and variety, and slight discounts for a dozen. Additional offerings include many made to order pies ($16 ea), plus a few frozen casseroles ($13-$26). A small cooler contained soft drinks, and while the interior, with it's wood paneled walls and blue plastic tablecloths, looks like a bad 1980's wedding reception, they do have seating if you'd like to dine in. This little Kolache house cranks out some nice ass (pardon my French) pastries I tell ya. Here's my breakdown for ya: - The Jalapeno n Cheese Sausage Kolache is an absolute hit. Big piece of sausage that bites back when you chomp down. My friend Destin said "it's SO HUGE" - - yup, that's what she said....... - Same goes with the Cheese Sausage Kolache. Very good and flavorful. The Ham n Cheese is okay - just needs a bit more ham n cheese IMO. - Tried the Saurkraut w/ Sausage and it was....ok. If you like saurkraut then you'll like it for sure, I'm not Polish but I'll do the white ruffage once in a while. - OMG - the Coconut Creme Cinnamon Buns are AWESOME!!! Even if you're not into coconuts you gotta try because it's really smooth and creamy and a nice added touch - I don't know how she came up with these but they ROCK! My friend Destin got one for his kids and gave them a small bite - they went crazy - but then he ate it all for himself. Gee, thanks Dad! - The fruit kolaches here are all pretty consistent. Plenty of offerings of the usual stuff and the dough is sweet too. The sausage kolaches dough is not sweet, it's more bread-like, so sometimes I even like to add ketchup / mustard / relish and treat it like a hotdog. Don't be mad at me, but it does the job. If you like your sausage kolaches with a sweet bun then dip it in honey or sugar I guess. - The pecan cluster buns are pretty damn good too, I highly recommend. - Got the Chicken Pot Pie - it was fabulous. Cook it frozen in the oven for about 80 min until the crust looks good - - and that crust is damn good I tell ya. Nice filling too - beats the hell out of Marie Callender's. - Sometimes they have extra and put those out the next day (day old) for a discount. OMG! Be careful when you go to the Kolaches kitchen! The three of us walked in thinking we'd get a Kolache and a drink. But once we saw all the flavors we could get is when we got in trouble. The next thing I know we had said "And one of those" so many times we ended up with 13 fruit filled Kolaches and a killer sausage filled Kolache. They made good snacks for the road trip we were on. I've heard of the fruit-filled Czech kolach before, but two days ago I was told about the Texan sausage-filled kolache. I then had one, and my life was forever changed for the better. The kolache is basically a breakfast hot dog covered with a semi-sweet bread. The fact that it's completely encased by the pastry dough makes it a completely legitimate breakfast item. Kolache Kitchen offers four different types of kolaches. I've tried the sauerkraut and jalapeño. They also offer a plain and a cheese one. I'm sure they're all delicious. In fact, you should stop reading and just go get one. No, seriously, do it now... before their closing time at noon. (I also tried the apricot kolach. So recently moving to this area, there is no shortage of kolache bakeries. This one is on my way to work and I like to stop here and pick them up for coworkers. The variety is large and the quality is like mom would make. The dough is very soft and pillowy. The thing with kolaches is the filling to dough ratio and they get it right. They also have a variety of take and bake casseroles that I have yet to try but hear good things about. Great place to stop for great kolaches and smiling faces! read more

I've been coming here since a was a child and they have always been the best! I, like most, love they're jalapeño and cheese sausage kolache. But you won't be disappointed with anything you get from here!! My immediate family moved from Temple to East Texas, but sometimes we come through to visit other members of our family and there's no question to it we are stoping on Kolache Kitchen every time we come into Temple. Being active duty unfortunately I don't get to come in but once every 5 years or so. But I hope that no matter how long in between my visits that I will always be able to come and enjoy the best kolache ever made! We always call ahead of time to get a very big order so we can freeze them, take them home, and have them for a week or two after. read more

There kolache has won numerous awards. They certainly are the best in town! But the best thing on the menu is the coconut roll. It's a giant fist full of coconut and cream cheese. I save it for lunch and drop some vanilla ice cream on top! read more
