3.5 stars for Kokoro. I really wanted to love this place. The restaurant is very traditional, and the service was impeccable. I really enjoyed the udon soup. The noodles had a nice chew to them. The broth was simple but delicious. While the fish in my nigiri was fresh, it wasn't as buttery as I would have liked. Several pieces of my nigiri were just "okay" and didn't have much flavor. Unfortunately, none of the pieces of fish really stood out to me. Upgrading to the udon instead of the miso soup that it came with was definitely worth it. I don't think I would have been full only eating the nigiri with miso soup. Overall a decent value for the price.

What a wonderful omakase experience! The restaurant is nondescript, in an odd location, but has very charming and authentic decor. The five of us sat at the counter and were served directly by the chef. We had a 3-part appetizer, two soup courses, a sashimi plate, and 8 nigiri. The sashimi plate and nigiri really shone from the freshness of the fish. Be aware that if you want the omakase, you must notify the chef 3 days in advance.

Chicken Karaage

Excellent food and service! I usually just order the a la carte nigiri menu. Fish quality has always been fresh and melt-in-your-mouth. Their chicken karaage is super hot, crispy on the outside, and juicy on the inside. The hours don't seem to be as consistent as posted, so I recommend calling before going. It usually looks closed from the outside.

Kokoro Restaurant was mentioned a long time ago by a friend as one of his preferred places for sushi. It's a little off the beaten path next to Subway in a Serra Mesa plaza. They have reduced their lunch service to Thursday through Sunday while dinner was offered from Tuesday through Sunday. We were the first ones to arrive for dinner recently and had our choice of seats from the eight person sushi bar and the tables in the dining room that could hold another 16 customers. A sushi order slip was provided along with a booklet that contained pages for Omakase or Dinner courses, preset sushi and sashimi combos, side dishes, dessert (panna cotta), saki, and other beverages. The two courses were customized for the month of July and cost $150 per person. I was tempted to try the Omakase but decided on an assorted sushi combo. We also ordered three side dishes... Nori-Ten (layer seaweed tempura), Eggplant with Miso, and Shrimp & Vegetable Tempura. Ten pieces of sushi, an appetizer (spinach and tofu dish), chawan-mushi, and miso soup made up the $67 combo. The sushi consisted of... * Toro (tuna belly) * Hamachi (yellowtail) * Tuna (bluefin) * Mejina (opal eye) * Ebi (shrimp) * Ika (squid) * Sawara (king mackerel) * Hotate (scallop) * Ikura (salmon roe) * Anago (sea eel) The Sawara stood out because it was much softer and had a less gamey taste than the mackerel I have eaten at omakase-only restaurants. Perhaps it was because this cut was king mackerel versus Aji which is horse (or Spanish) mackerel used by some places or even Saba mackerel which was listed on the order slip. I also liked the Hotate as the scallop meat was delicate and soft. The chawan-mushi was loaded with more ingredients (ginkgo nuts, shiitake mushrooms, shrimp) than usual for this egg custard dish. The service was fine because we were the first party of the evening and placed our order before those that came after us. There was nothing flashy about our dining experience at Kokoro Restaurant, just solid quality sushi at a reasonable price.

Great sushi! Family owned! I came for lunch and it was delicious. We only ordered sushi. Sweet shrimp is a killer deal! Miso soup was very good. Tea is very good

Adorable traditional sushi spot, very tranquil inside. Sushi chef is an incredibly talented professional. No loud annoying TVs (yay!) Assorted nigiri set for lunch, fresh, and melt in your mouth, so delicious! Love that the chef includes a nice amount of wasabi in each bite! Beer is served draft, nice and cold, service is sweet. 10/10 can't wait to return!

We went to Kokoro on Valentine's Day for their omakase and it was uh something. I thought the appetizers were ok and the fried food were cold. All the fish quality were exceptional with sushi and sashimi. However, what really took a hit for me was the scallops and lobster where both were very overcooked and the sauce almost tasted burnt. Also, something happened with the kitchen or something because other people stayed for 1.5 hours to 2 but we had super long waits between courses and had to stay for over 3 hours. Not sure what the issue was exactly but for one of them we had to wait over 30 minutes after we were done with a course.

We came here 3 friends to eat fresh nigiri. This place has an authentic Japanese style , the service here is wonderful and the food is delicious. This is not our first and not our last time

Excellent authentic Sushi restaurant. The location is not the best but the food here is exceptional. The inside of the restaurant is cozy and the staff are all friendly. Highly recommend to get the omakase sushi. I have been here many times and regular sushi is also good but omakase offer better type of fish. Regardless of what you order, all fish here are very fresh and flavorful.

I can only speak of the Omakase offered here. Unfortunately, at $150 per person, I felt the omakase here fell short and was my least favorite of any other omakase I've had. The sushi (sashimi and nigiri platter) was fresh, and the panna cotta dessert was good. Everything else was subpar or not even worth mentioning. I should've ordered a La carte. Wasn't worth it in my opinion. =(

Hi, Do you have private dining room (area) for party of 6?

I'm not the official voice but I didn't see a separate dining area when I went

Do they have unseared albacore?

Are there any vegan options?

Not very many. Edamame, vegetable tempura, nori tempura maybe some others but that's what I can think of off the top of my head.

Included to choose from: specialty and basic rolls, hand rolls, basic udon, miso soup, calamari, etc. Best if with a group to share so nothing goes to waste if you don't like something. Our group of four left satisfied. Value: Four adults without drinks came to about $180 before tip. It's pricey but considering it's fresh sushi made to order and not generic rolls left on a counter like other buffets I think it warrants the higher price. Be advised adding sashimi is an additional ~$13. Service: Very quick to take orders, bring out food (fried/baked will take longer), fill waters and give the bill when ready. Excellent. Interior: Very clean, modern, and my guest was able to watch the padres game while we ate. Overall: If you're willing to spend over $40 on quality sushi, you'll love it here. Called Chef Jun to confirm if we needed a reservation here, but they said they had tables available since we were planning on being there in 10-15 minutes. We walked in and were immediately greeted by the girls up front and sat at a nice table outside on the back patio. We ordered the chef's choice sashimi, poke, beer, and green grape soju. I ended up asking for lemonade too to mix with my soju since I rarely drink and do not like the taste of alcohol lol. The theme of Sushi MARU is truly attention to detail, and that extends from arrival, to service, to, of course, the food. Staff were incredibly attentive and easy to talk to, including the chefs. The food, I will comment on just generally as the menu is constantly changing (as is the case with many omakase): each dish was composed of pieces that complemented each other well and created a cohesive flavor pallette. Each nigiri was artfully prepared that emphased the quality and cut of the fish, and were complemented by flavors to further highlight that. The flow of the evening was non-traditional omakase, but it felt perfect. Price ($180pp) is not for the faint of heart, but is cheaper than others I've seen. Made the reservatiin online at the beginning of March for an omakase seating in April to celebrate husband's bday. They had a 5:15pm seating on a weekday at the sushi counter. Other options are the table and outside patio, however, for omakase, I always prefer the counter/bar. Unlike other omakase restaurants, Soichi offers their full vs petite vs nigiri only omakases at variable times (not limited to 2 seating times like others). You can also enjoy any of these omakases or order a la carte or both at the tables and outside patio also. The ambiance is bright and full of energy. Can get a bit loud with people talking, but didn't bother me. Parking is street parking. No designated lot. We found one a little down the street and walked over, which worked out. There is a park down the street and street parking around it. I recommend arriving earlier to find parking though, just in case. Restaurant is small inside, but clean and cozy. We arrived 15min early, and they seated us. The staff were all friendly. They all spoke Japanese to each other, which also felt more authentic. Our omakase chef was Daniel today. He was very nice, friendly, professional, and skilled. When we had questions, he answered them promptly and kindly. He also checked in with us to ensure the ratio of rice and sashimi was OK for us (of course it was). They served on unique plates too. Everything tasted so fresh and smooth. Some items were also unique compared to other omakase restaurants. The chawanmushj was also piping hot when served, so it also tasted fresh. They have barley tea here too and not just green tea. They offer a la carte at the end of the omakase course if we like, but I was too full. My husband ordered a tuna maki roll, which he thought tasted great. The dessert was also yum! Hojicha ice cream was very tasty! I recommend! They sang the happy bday song for the bday folks, where the senior chef (perhaps the owner?) played the ukelele/guitar and sang happy bday with the rest of us guests. Thought that was really neat. I recommend Soichi! Shout out to Chef Daniel!

The service and partnership between the sushi chef and the wait staff was fantastic and every interaction was well thought out. The appetizer wasn't my cup of tea, but the sashimi, nigiri, grilled fish, chawanmushi were really good. The assortment of fish (at least for this season) wasn't my favorite (featuring sardines, mackerel, etc.) when I would have loved some yellowtail and salmon belly. We ordered a negitoro cut roll a la carte because we were still a little hungry - this was super tasty as the quality of the tuna/toro is top notch. For dessert, they had 4 flavors of homemade ice cream to pick from. The sesame was incredible and the roasted green tea really good too. I feel like most of the omakase I've been to have 2-3 seating for dinner, so all the customers for that time arrive at the same time and everyone is at the same point of the omakase. At Soichi, it seems like each party has their reservation at a different time (4:30, 4:45, 5:00, etc.) so each group is at a different part of their meal, not to mention some parties that ordered a la carte or a different omakase menu (sushi only option, etc.) As a result, the chef is bouncing around working on a bunch of different items, and we had to wait quite a bit for each of our nigiri courses. The whole meal took 2.5 hours. We also felt less of that group vibe with other parties that is common in other omakases. Overall, we still had a really lovely time and glad we got to try it!,

Three course for $65…read more We ordered: 1st -Chicken karaage - hard crunch just straight up fried chicken skin and chicken jerky due to the dryness. No flavor unless you dip. It was like eating chicharron. -Egg plant skewers - Couldn't tell it wasn't meat, it had the firm and tender texture with Unami flavors. 2nd -Rock shrimp tempura - this would taste better with rice. Almost like honey walnut shrimp. Ate like 3 and got full. Too much batter. -Big eye tuna tataki - nothing stood out 3rd -Surf and turf roll - by the time we got this dish, we were already disappointed not satisfied. -Kim chi chaufa - basic fired rice with the crispy burnt rice at the bottom. For a place this upscale, I wasn't impressed with the restaurant week menu. The food was under whelming. Sad to say that our favorite dish out of all were the egg plant skewers. I would rate 2 for the food but increase due to the view and ambiance. We looked around and saw every table with the pretty sushi box. I expected the menu not to offer all cooked dishes. This would go down as one of our least favorite restaurant week dining experience. No parking in this area so we took an uber. I can't believe we spent over $100 each and left disappointed and hungry.
