It's free so that's a great plus. Staff is generally friendly and helpful, but there is always one or two old grumpy guys who like to lord their power over people. I saw a staff member (older heavier set guy) yell at some kids before they even started shooting (one kid had just picked up a gun and hadn't even inserted a magazine) and threaten to kick him off the range. Kid was clearly a beginner but he wasn't doing anything wrong and giving him a negative experience isn't going to get him interested in shooting for the rest of his life. That staff member clearly didn't want to be there which kinda begs the question why even show up (I think they're volunteers and not paid). If you don't enjoy what you do, I'm sure you can find better things to do on a weekend. But overall the experience is fine. You just have to watch for the staff members who like to lord power over people and ignore their attempts to try and embarrass people. read more

Getting the reservations can be tough because they get taken so quickly. Once we got there though it's pretty simple to sign in and get setup at an assigned station to shoot from. I have quite a few dislikes. The targets stands are too far for practical pistol shooting. Shooting at 25 yards by default does not help me train or properly zero my firearm unless it's a bullseye competition. Maybe have varying distances starting at 7-10 yards and then going out as far as you want. Also even thought the state law is 10 rd minimum ( a problem within itself) the range only lets load 5 rounds at a time which is absurd. You spend more time loading than shooting. It's already extremely hard to exercise your rights in Hawaii and the ONLY outdoor shooting range does not help the situation. read more

Decided to try the rifle side the last few weeks and can't shake the unsolicited attitude/egos from the workers. If you hate your City and County parks and rec job so bad, HPD is always hiring. This was my first time going shooting and I had a blast. My friends come here often and recommended it as one of their ranges of preference. We came on a Sunday around 3pm (they close at 4pm). There's free parking, and plenty of it. Once you arrive, sign in, and setup at an open spot. I'd recommend trying to, at least, leave one table open between you and others if it's not too busy. It was definitely very COVID-19 friendly. At the same time, I appreciated the staff being very strict and stern when it came to gun safety procedures and protocol. Came here for the first time to learn how to shoot. The staff are friendly, it costs $5 to shoot. There are a lot of spaces to shoot at. The range is big with lots of things to shoot like a big metal plate which I was aiming at for my first time. It was fun, the range is located before you hit Hanama bay. There is plenty of parking. I love the drive in! It's picturesque and any tourist should drive in this way even if you're not shooting. The site has shooting clubs and regulars. I wouldn't recommend newbies to shoot here on your own.. I oh so loved it here. Nice getaway and great skeet and trap spot down the mountain a little. Whether you're a 6'3" sniper or just a gun enthusiast, great spot to practice. My favorite part was when I was hesitant to shoot the shotgun but the staff encouraged me to try it... AND I did great lol, a little badge of honor on my right shoulder- what we really should have done was record that but I was too busy shooting to care about anything else. Free but bring your own ear and eye protection, gun, ammo, target frame and targets. Their website has exact measurements for the target frame that you can build. I also recommend bringing water because even though it's shaded, it can get hot! The workers are real friendly and give clear directions when to cease fire (unload gun and step behind yellow line), retrieve your targets, and resume fire. I come here quite often and can't believe I haven't written a review! Well here it goes. As you drive in, there is an archery range on the right, further down, the parking lot is usually packed on the weekends and the gun range is right behind. Skeet shooting is to the left but held only twice a year. Police officers and other federal agents practice firing on the left with the smaller guns. As soon as you park, immediately wear your eye protection, whether it be sunglasses or safety glasses, and ear plugs/ ear muffs, walk up the hill, facing the range the check in site is more on the left side. Sign your name and gun type. It's free! You just have to bring your gun, bullets, target board, and target paper refills. If you don't know the measurements, bring wood and a board and the guys at check in can help you measure/saw it to the pole width that's out in the field. Every 30minutes we stop firing, the workers have a routine, just got to listen to their instructions, and when given the go you can retrieve your target and reapply a new one. If your a beginner the workers can help you out with your gun. I'm always interested in the "next rifle" so I'll casually walk around and talk story with others. Some will actually let you try out a few shots and that will help you get a feel if that's the gun for you or not. Don't really need shoes but it's best to have Incase the bullet cases fly.. read more

Do you like to shoot at targets beyond 100 yards! Do you like to load your 30 round magazine to full capacity? Do you like to mag dump or rapid fire your firearm until your finger cramps up? Well you are out of luck because you won't find that luxury here because of strict rules and the possibility of triggering someone. No pun intended. 100 yards is the farthest you will shoot here. You can bring your 30 round magazine but only five rounds can be loaded at a time. Absolutely no rapid firing whatsoever. Only pew.................pew.................pew.................pew..............pew or risk the chance of getting booted from the range. Long pants, shoes, eye and ear protection are required. It's always good to bring your own equipment like rifle rest and targets. A spec sheet with the dimensions to make your own is available. Just ask the range officer. There's a jig in front the office to size your target legs so when you walk out to the 100yard mark your target fits perfectly. Listen to all commands on the loud speaker. Once there's a cease fire, lock your slide back so the range officer can see it to clear the line. Step behind the yellow line. During this time once your done. Wait until the line is clear then you may go change your target. But bust a move out there. Don't dilly dally. The faster you get back the faster you get to start shooting. Once you get back, get behind the line. I remember getting yelled at big time many times because my foot was over the line. Make ass kind of yell but I'm sure everyone went through that one time or another. Once the line is clear you can commence firing. Repeat. They have skeet a pistol range as well. If you don't know, ask the range officers. You can't miss them they are always watching you when you least expect it. They will correct you when your not doing something right. Sign a waiver, go through a security briefing, exchange your $$ for scripts, then exchange your scripts for a # of rounds per each gun. Clearly, my favorite activity was put together by the local skeet club. You have a shotgun and shoot flying clay targets. Lol it's fun when you actually hit them. When I say bang bang, you say Mick Foley Ok that was corny but that's what you hear constantly when you are there. TIP: Bring hearing and eye protection. This is a state run facility located all the way in Koko Head the backside of the crater with the entrance at the makai side. The drive there is beautiful and you can miss the entrance looking at the waves. Anyway the facility is broken down into several areas. As you drive down the road, there's a small archery range to your right. Further down you, a long covered area also on your right. The first section is a paying section to shoot either pistols or long guns. Here the facility places your targets. The middle section, the largest, is the rifle only range and all the way at the end is the pistol range. These two section you bring and hang your own targets. Too the left of the compound are the competition shooting area and the restrooms. Don't be tempted to shoot at the chickens crossing the road. They're all over just chilling. If they were In Waipahu, different story. SAFETY FIRST is the motto. Remember to always aim down hill and presume the weapon is always loaded till verified. And verify again. This is a fun place and plan to spend the day since for many it's a long drive. Overall four stars. Plenty parking and instructors. A few vending machines would be nice along with cleaner restrooms. My first day out at Koko Head was fantastic and terrible. Or terribly fantastic. I had a great time, but I destroyed my frame! 1x3 wood does not hold up long against 7 holes made with a .357 mag. Just a little unofficial "quick tip" for ya'll there. I took all the right steps, went to a pistol safety course, practices and tried some different guns, made my purchases. Nobody had the time to go out to koko head with me so I took the initiative and went out on my own. The facilities at Koko Head are there, but hurting from lack of city funding. There are restrooms in the center of the complex and also up between the rifle and silhouette ranges. The recent implementation of furlough days and decrease hours is a sad thing. As if the range weren't crowded enough, things really get buzzing on the weekends, often with lines at various ranges. Current hours are on the website along with a lot of this info. I am just condensing some of it down since I know it off the top of my head. Here's what is offered: 1. Pistol Bullseye 25 and 50 yds 2. Rifle Bullseye 50 and 100 yds with metal plates at 200-440yds 3. Silhouette ($5 per person, club operated) 4. Trap ($5 per round, club operated) 5. Skeet (I need to double check, I think it's $10) 6. Club shooting on weekends (practical, cowboy/single action, etc.) 7. Archery Requirements: For ALL shooting you are required to have: Eye protection, ear protection, gun & ammo (none for rent or sale at the range). And other supplies depending on what you are shooting. Target Frames: Gotta bring your own target and target frame for both pistol and rifle bullseye ranges. See the website for frame specifications. They need to be pretty precise in order to fit into the frame holders. They are not the same size or interchangeable! Silhouette: You can shoot .22LR as well as any caliber handgun though I think .50 isn't allow at the moment. Not sure. Love coming here! And the first Sunday of every month they hold .22LR silhouette matches with a $5 entrance fee. Good friendly competition and lunch to follow. Trap and Skeet: Now this is one of my favorites. It's just so dang gratifying seeing that clay disintegrate in mid air! All you really need is your shotgun and ammo, maybe a pouch for your shells. They supply the clay birds (which you pay for in your fee). All of the ranges are very safe with strict rules and protocols enforced by range officers. Most people are very friendly helpful. Remember to read the rules that are posted at each range and know at least the basics of gun safety. 1. Always point the gun in a safe direction. 2. Always keep your finder off the trigger until ready to shoot. 3. Always keep the gun unloaded until ready to use. Koko Head is lacking in a few areas, state of facilities, hours, shooting options/distances. But I'll tell you, I am always stoked as I'm cruising down Kalanianaole hwy on a Sunday morning to go make some holes and shatter some clay! read more

Although the facility hours at this outdoor complex is somewhat limited depending on the sport as well as the day of the week, Kokohead Shooting Complex is a great place to sharpen and hone your skills whether it be on the rifle, pistol, silhouette, trap, skeet, action pistol, cowboy and archery ranges. We've only utilized the pistol and silhouette ranges on Saturdays primarily because they're open 8:00am to 4:00pm on weekends. Complimentary lot parking is ample, however at certain times of the day such as early weekend mornings, the stalls closest to each section of range can fill up pretty quickly. So either arrive early on Saturdays and Sundays, or after the early morning weekend crowd has finished up for the day. Restrooms are sparse but functional with amenities like flushing toilets, running water, toilet paper and an occasional bar of soap left behind by a thoughtful individual. In other words, it's always a good idea to bring along some soap and paper just in case. Whatever your area of interest, enjoy and have a blast, but just be sure to pay close attention to safety rules and adhere to regulations under the direction of the range officials overseeing each section. read more

PEW PEW! BANG BANG! Truthfully, I hate guns and don't like to surround myself with one. But because I'm dating someone who owns a gun and have guy friends who have the same interests as him especially them being in the military, us girlfriends have to support their hobby one way or another. I actually did have that on my bucket list to shoot a gun one day and figured this would be the perfect time to do so as we heard about the chance to shoot a variety of guns at an event coming up. Annually, The Hawaii Rifle Association holds a shooting sports fair at the Koko Head Shooting Range during Father's Day weekend. So the girlfriends decided we should bring our boyfriends for an early Father's Day treat for them to enjoy a day of shooting. Of course, they were pretty stocked. All of us girls were first timers as the guys already were familiar with the shooting range as they have previously gone to shooting ranges before. So we got to experience what this hobby of theirs that amuses them so much is all about. The fair was on Saturday and Sunday from 10am - 4pm. We went on Saturday around 9am to get good parking. It was free to get in and the lines were already forming before the event started. We were asked to sign waivers and then we were required to listen to a short safety briefing before heading out to the range. It was like a carnival where you had to buy scrips at a $1 each to give to the attendants when you get to the shooting area. **EYE WEAR AND EAR PROTECTION IS MANDATORY! it is required to have it on at all times while on the range for safety reasons. They earplugs for $1 to purchase. You may also use glasses or sunglasses as protection. There were a lot of firearms available to try and the cost of the bullets depends on the type of weapon you have. So the bigger it got, the more costly it was per round. It was increments of 5 rounds per weapon. Some of the available firearms were air soft, action pistol, BB guns, Pellet guns, archery, shotguns, rifles, pistols, etc. They had Certified Instructors who assisted everyone in proper handle of the fire weapons. The staff were so helpful and attentive to making my experience more comfortable for my first time handling a firearm. I first started off with the smallest gun that was $2 for 10 rounds of shots. I told the instructor it was my first time holding a gun and he guided me and helped me with my stance form of properly shooting the gun. That first shot took me back a bit trying to get in my comfort zone but there after it was breeze shooting the rest of the rounds. I then upgraded to the .22 rifles that was much bigger and more power than a regular shotgun. It was pretty cool though and I'm glad I was able to experience it. Overall, it was fun and kind of like a stress reliever. The fair was a good way to break my comfort zone in trying out the shooting range since I was comfortable that I had experience instructors to teach me how to use guns properly. Its such a great stress reliever though to just shoot and let it all out. I wouldn't mind coming back again to shoot. Probably wouldn't make it a hobby but at least I know what it's like for the guys to have that adrenaline kick out of it. read more

This was not my idea. I was just here to accompany my boyfriend. He insisted I give it a try, but I was strongly against it. I was sure that I wouldn't even make it to the parking lot. I was that scared. The first "pop" I heard coming out of the car frightened me. I was not ready to sit, watch and hear a bunch of pop pop POP! I jumped and squealed at ever one. After watching him go through a few rounds, he again insisted I give it a try. Alright, what heck. I went for it. I walked up to the plate, clueless to what was going on and sat in place. I picked up the gun, loaded the bullets, and POP!! I did it!!! I fired a gun for the first time!! My boyfriend stopped bugging me after that. I was more afraid that the gun would retract against my small body and bruise me somewhere, but all it did was vibrate. After 5 rounds, I was comfortable after that. The idea of shooting a gun was scary, but the procedures that they have in place here reassures your safety, just as long as you follow the rules. Handy tips. Bring earplugs! Don't come here thinking you can handle the noise, because it's loud! Don't forget to sign in too. Follow the rules and be attentive to the overheard speakers and you'll be fine. I don't really have too much to compare this place to, but it's one of the few outdoor shooting ranges around in the greater Honolulu area. The facilities are pretty old, and by no means pretty, but it gets the job done. There is ample parking (on the grass) available all over the place, and restrooms and soda machines here and there. Bring your own guns, ammo, eye and ear protection, and targets (if you're shooting pistols or rifles). You can find the target frame dimensions on their website http://www.khsc.info/. They don't have any for public rental or sales. There are several ranges to choose from; A pistol range, rifle range, and a couple shotgun ranges where you can shoot flying clay discs (trap & skeet shooting). There will be a modest fee charged if you're shooting trap or skeet for the clay discs you're using. Friendliness of the staff is hit or miss. For the most part they're pretty friendly, or indifferent, but occasionally you'll get a real grump running the show. If you're heading there on a Friday be sure to check the City and County furlough schedule in case they're closed that day. I also noticed an archery range at the entrance of the complex, so I hope to check that out one day. However, there is no shade in that area, so I'd suggest bringing a folding canopy if you do decide to check it out. read more

This place was pretty cool. You pretty much have to bring everything, they just provide the space/area to do your shooting. So bring your own eye and ear protection which is a MUST or else you can't shoot. They are strict there with the rules but it's a good thing considering you're handling a fire arm. We only shot at the area for rifles and hand guns but both places were great. Bring your own drinks/snacks as the most they have is a vending machine. There are restrooms there as well. They called peoples names over the speakers when a bench was available and people were pretty friendly, whether it was your neighbor or the Range Officers. I came here as part of my hand gun training class. I could have easily spent all day here as my instructor brought about 6 guns for us to practice with and there were 5 of us there that day. So this isn't a private range where you can rent guns to try its byogs and targets. 1/2 of the range is run by a club and the other 1/2 is open to the public. I think they said you can pay $5 and go to the club side and shoot their metal targets all day(?) Just be sure to bring ear plugs and your own food/snacks as there are none of either here. There's only 1 restroom area which is pretty far from the public gun range and in the parking lot. read more

this is a review of the pistol range I decided to try out the Koko Head range today. I knew that wooden frames are what are typically used but I didn't know the "dimensions" (this word will have significance later) so I brought a couple of spinning targets. I figured if I cant use them no big deal I would at the very least get the measurement for the target frame while there and come back another time. I was assuming that reasonable people could come to reasonable solutions, but apparently I was over confident. Here is an outline of my experience: I show up, look for posted rules, and don't see much ( I'm with a friend) We start to walk in... "HEY! ^&*%&" me: "I'm sorry what was that?" Range-jerk: "SIGN IN!. I do so and Start to walk to a bench RJ: "HEY, .....YOU CANT USE THOSE HERE! " ( he indicates my targets) (at this point its evident he's yelling at me and not over the noise. The flames coming out of his eye balls and shooting me in the face were my fist clue) Me: "oh, ok, guess its the wooden frames only here. I wasn't sure of their size so didn't have one. How many inches is it between frame? " (yes, I could have framed this question better) (RJ stares at me) Me: "......between the legs......" ( RJ continues to stare at me) Me: ".........you know the span between the ground mount holes?...... " RangeJerk: "YOU MEAN THE D-I-M-E-N-S-I-O-N-S?!?!. I DON'T KNOW HOW MANY INCHES ARE BETWEEN THE FRAMES. THAT'S HOW YOU SAY IT! DIMENSIONS, NOT INCHES!.' (cant blame him too much here. I'm guessing that the word "dimensions" is the one 3 Syllable word that he knows and he was just aching for a chance to use it) At this point he hands me a little diagram and makes a few more sarcastic remarks. I then look him in the eye and say : "Ok, and thank you for being so polite.", I leave, go to the hardware store, go home and build a frame. great public relations there. I'll go back again, there isn't much choice, but any and all altercations like this will be reported to parks and recreations, real time. read more

In all fairness, Koko Head Shooting Complex of and in itself is a good facility. I grew up learning to shoot at this range since 1986. The best part of this range is the fact it is free to the public. However, that is where the pros end. If you have no other ranges to compare to, especially in pro-gun states, you're missing a lot. The RSOs and other staff member's conduct in fostering an atmosphere of encouragement while maintaining safety makes all the difference. It is bad enough that Hawaii is not pro 2nd Amendment but to have staff members disrespect other shooters, in essence discouraging them from returning and hurting our beloved sport of shooting, by belittling or use of aggressive reprimand as a means of correction is a definite turn off. I myself have never been yelled at, but have witnessed others included some of my own family members who are military veterans have disputes with the RSOs. The same family members who shoot are also marksmen, myself included, and former snipers in their respective military branches. The range is also treated like a petting zoo. Cats and chickens are fed on a regular basis. Possibly receiving better treatment than the animals at the Honolulu Zoo. If promotion of the shooting sport was this passionate, maybe owning firearms in Hawaii would be a growing trend. A shooting range should be a safe haven for shooters. It should be free of judgement, ridicule, disrespect, and opinions (unless asked for). I do and would gladly pay for range time where employees give respect to all shooters regardless of skill level, age, or gender. read more
