Koko you had me going loco, from the first time I laid eyes on your sugary seductive sweets many years ago when I lived near your Melbourne store. I never did get to try your goodness (regretfully).
I'll admit, I am the savoury kind of girl at heart. However, I am a part-time closet sweets lover, a finicky one at that.
Having been invited for a sneaky chocolate lunch - yes, a lunch. Koko Black's sleek, sexy yet classy atmosphere really draws me in, as of course does the smell of cocoa.
After a lot of chitter chatter, the ever so patient waiting staff finally took our order. Chilli hot chocolate for each of us and the dessert degustation for two.
A chilli hot chocolate has to have that right balance of chilli heat that shouldn't over power the chocolate. Koko Black nailed this balance perfectly.
The presentation of the dessert degustation was pretty impressive. Five petite versions of some of their best selling desserts (Chocolate Alchemy Cake, Opera Gateau, Raspberry Chocolate Mousse, Belgian Mousse and chocolate ice-cream) were deceivingly on display. I thought to myself, two of us can definitely polish this off. Ha! We did have a good go at it but some of it just didn't make it through our soft pillowy chocolate tainted lips.
The only downfall with the degustation is that each individual item was extremely difficult to portion for two. It was awkward cutting in to them as some of the elements were hard and I was worried I would fling the dessert halfway across the room. The platter came out beautiful but got taken away looking like a chocolate puddle of mess. Each were delicious but seemed to lack something or just weren't as fine tuned as I would have expected.
The highlight on the platter was the opera cake with the raspberry dome a close second. I felt there just wasn't enough of a raspberry hit on this.
I can't wait to get some handcrafted chocolates next time.
