Hand-pounded mochi made in the same way for 3 generations. As others have noted, it's a true gem and def. a mom and pop place; don't expect a fancy interior for your 'grams. I believe flavors (and even whether they have the ice cream mochi) are dependent on season and what the owner has. When we went she had two kinds of mochi with smooth red bean paste and a sweet white bean paste and a variety of manju (a rice flour bun with variety of red/white bean fillings, some flavored with green tea). Manju is new to me but the little buns are super tasty, sticky outside and soft on the inside. Upon request, she also went back and made some fresh fruit mochi (3-berry and blueberry) and pie filling mochi (peach and apple). Between us and my Japanese mother in law, we pretty much bought out half of what she had made that morning. I always have to state my disclosure statement that I don't usually review places unless I really think they are stellar. Today, I finally made it to Kogetsu,when it was open, after attempting to visit multiple times since 2015. I was driving with family from Oakhurst, thru the Sierras, and was running late due to another appointment so my cousin called the mochi shop and asked if they could stay open 10 minutes later. The shop said yes and asked if they can put together an order of a dozen for us. We pretty agreed to omakase style where the shop owner pre-selected a box for us. Lynn Ikeda, the owner of the 100 year old shop greeted us herself and treated us with her regional specialities. The 3 berry mochi and delicious dark chocolate mochi filled with almond were the best surprises ever! The family members I was with had never tried mochi with red bean before nor the shop's ice cream mochi. This mom and pop shop really makes you feel at home whilst Auntie Lynn greeted us with aloha and treated us to a couple of extra deserts for our trip back on the road. I've never actually been to the shop, but they buy produce from my family's strawberry stand when we are in season and have brought us mochi before. They've given us a strawberry one and chocolate (Nutella?) one. Both were amazing! The flavor was great and it's almost like you can taste the hard work and heart used to make them. Best mochi in the Universe! Well, certainly in North America. :) I have been going to Kogetsu-do for mochi for many, many years. When I lived in Fresno, I frequented the place often. Since moving to Seattle over a decade ago, I still find myself longing for Kogetsu-do's fresh mochi; I can find mochi in these parts, but not nearly as good nor as fresh. Whenever I'm in the Fresno area, or anywhere near, I always make a pilgrimage to Kogetsu-do, and usually load up on a box or two to bring back home. (But I have to eat or give the mochi out quickly since it goes bad far too fast!) One thing I have always liked is that Lynn and her family have always welcomed me, usually by name, even when my visits are years apart. I absolutely love Kogetsu-do. Came to the shop as it seems to be the only shop that sells homemade mochi. The shop itself is cute and little and is located in an older part of Fresno, so you can imagine the history of the place. I kinda rushed in to get mochi so I didn't get to observe as much as I wanted to, but in addition to selling mochi, they sold ice cream and shaved ice. They a variety of mochi flavors and I got Chocolate Mochi with Touch Down Sundae ice cream and Strawberry Mochi with strawberry mochi. Both which were delicious with the mochi outer layer is soft like its suppose to be and the ice cream inside giving it its flavor. You should let the mochi thaw just a little bit, but thats just a personal advice if you like your mochi ice cream a little softer. I love Kogetsu-Do. This is my favorite place to buy mochi. They sell fresh, delicious, and authentic mochi treats here. I grew up in Japan and I tested a lot of mochi. Until a month ago, that's what you would get out of my mouth, but now I can proudly say that when I come here, I have to pick up a dozen or two of some of the best manju I have ever had since I was a kid in Japan. Although the store was divey, this small takeout Japanese dessert place is a Fresno gem and is worth visiting for their famous hand made Mochi filled Ice cream and Manju. The taste of their mochi is really how it was when I tried in Japan which here means they are really authentic to the real thing. The FREE street parking is easy to find here, please know that the store is not properly labeled, so don't be shocked if you don't see it right away, your GPS did get you to the right place. This place is CASH only, but don't worry this place is so affordable, with ice cream filled mochi priced at $2.50 each. So plan to bring $5-$20 here in cash. There are no place to sit and eat in here, its strictly takeout only. Don't expect a proper store when you first get in, expect seeing some random plants for sale, some Japanese ornaments for sale too and then finally on the left you would see the mochi and manju. The price of each Mochi filled with ice cream is $2.50, they have : strawberry, cookies and cream, azuki beans and corn on the day I visited. They also sell snow cone and manju for $1.25. The flavors might change, so call first if you have a preference and would like to know your choices. The mochi filled ice cream was delicious, I would let it thaw for 10 minutes before eating because it is frozen. Once thawed the ice cream inside would still be solid while the outside (rice cake) soft and springy. The first bite is just awesome, that chewy, soft texture and slight chills from the ice cream really brings back memories of my trip to Tokyo having this same dessert. The strawberry ice cream and the cookies and cream ice cream were both unique tasting and complimented the rice cake outer layer. This is a definite unique treat from Japan that is hard to come by. Great, local and old school type of place in Fresno to find handmade ice cream Mochis. It's pretty amazing to step in here, and notice that this place has not changed over the course of the 100 years that they have been open. The Mochis here are pretty big (about the size of my palm) and are really cheap at only $2 each. These things taste great, and you can definitely tell it has been made fresh from scratch, unlike the processed ones from the store. They also serve shave ice, and other sweets like Manju, which I have not tried yet but look really good. The owner here is pretty friendly as well, and will always make sure you are getting help. I don't think I can give them a full 5 stars though, due to the cash only policy, limited hours (closes at 4pm), and limited selection of ice cream Mochis anytime after 2pm (make sure to call in advance!), but at the same time it's understandable, considering the owner here is practically the only employee so I don't wanna knock them down too far for that. read more

Love this traditional Japanese confectionary! This store has been passed down three generations, and has been in Fresno since 1915. How amazing is this little treasure, and they have very fresh manju. It was so soft and delectable. She even had fresh fruit manju, and pie filling manju. There is also hawaiin sno cones to beat the heat. The hours are the only tricky part to this store. I think they close around 4 any given day, which is understandable. read more

Unfortunately not much selection when we passed through. There is a shortage of mung beans right now apparently, so only mochi/manju with red beans seem to be available. Fruit not yet in season either so no daifuku. This starts in June/July. The other thing I was interested in was the yokan which apparently only is made for new year. An elderly Japanese friend of mine told me about Kogetsu-DO in west Fresno and so I went to give it a try. Today was my second visit here and enjoyed it once again. You can give the shop a call prior to your visit and ask what flavors they have in before taking the trip. Today I bought two cookies and cream mochi ice cream, one vanilla, and one strawberry. The owner is incredibly genuine and patient which makes the experience more pleasurable. One thing I noticed when walking in, this place is like a historical museum. A lot of different things in a small shop and has been in the same location for many decades. The history of the shop compliments the mochi making it taste better than what it already is. I love to go to places that has been around doing the same thing forever. Let alone, the traditional way too. Absolutely top notch in my book. Furthermore, the ingredients are always fresh. DISCLAIMER: This place does not focus on Snow Cones. Its primary and real bakery is that of Daifuku. (No, not the frozen mochi that you get after a sushi dinner) but the real Daifuku. The Daifuku that is so authentic and so masterfully crafted, its an honor to eat one, and you can taste the history and generational mastery of perfection in each bite. This has to be one of the most authentic Japanese Daifuku places that I have ever, ever been to. With an over 100 year history. Except during the Japanese Internment camps in WWII, this place is still alive. Manned over generations of family members, this Daifuku place is doing strong. Pros: Im a sucker for local mom and pop shops. Plus history and tradition, and Im like the guy from anime who falls back with blood coming out from my nose. That being said. I love this place. The people. The person working the front counter. She is part of the long generational family who has been running this place from when it was first open. Its pretty amazing and humbling to know that history. I love how she's so thoughtful, calm, cheerful, and helpful. She should be retired, but hell, this is her family bakery and her family duty. Much props to her. The Daifuku itself. This is the most softest and most delicate Daifuku I have ever eaten. Its so fresh, so decadent, so rich, it tasted amazing. I love good old red bean filling. The red beans if you have the pureed kind, was so perfect, its like the red bean daifuku that you use to compare everything else to. Everything was so silky and smooth. Not the gummy kind of dough and filling that you might get from an asian store that happens to sell daifuku. I love how they use seasonal ingredients in them, meaning that each are fresh and not preserved. All of the pairings are well thought out and taste amazing. But, them being them, no surprises there. Cons: Its in downtown china town. The glory days long gone, now its a desolate place lots of homeless camps and homeless. My car has been safe parking there, but Id park close if I were you. Please try out this place. It is tasting tradition and perfection that many other places around the nation, let alone the world does not have access too. I compare this is like how Fresno is so lucky to be so close to Yosemite. This is like a Yosemite for me but for Japanese Daifuku. read more

HIDDEN GEM. For me anyway. Haha. My brother and his girlfriend were in town and we were in search of vegan desserts and this place popped up. It's situated in the "Chinatown" of Fresno (which I didn't know existed until this morning) in a more run-down neighborhood so I wouldn't have known about this place if it weren't for the internet. The shop itself is small and holds a collection of miscellaneous Japanese items but we were there for the mochi. For less than 8 dollars, we picked up 6 pieces of mochi, all decently sized. I was expecting to pay a lot more. I just ate the Fresh Strawberry mochi and it was amazing. The mochi was very soft and just the right amount of sweet and the strawberry inside was indeed fresh. There were a variety of fruit flavors such as blueberry, boysenberry, raspberry, and apple in addition to the more traditional red bean. I don't know why anyone would rate this place less than 5 stars because it is one of the freshest and best mochi I have ever had. Can't wait to come back! read more
