One of the few places left that sells traditional Japanese mochi and filled mochi (daifuku). The ones here are perhaps the plumpest and cheapest I've had yet! They are $1.30 EACH! These steamed rice balls are typically coated in powder, but sometimes soy bean powder. They have the traditional filling (azuki/ red bean and lima bean/ white bean) and some with FRESH, seasonal fruit. They even had dorayaki, a traditional Japanese pancake with filling. So, I think their lima bean mochi was my favorite -- subtle sweetness, but starchy, wholesome, and almost buttery. Their red bean mochi was delectable and the blueberry filled daifuku was bursting with fresh blueberries. The dorayaki was a treat and reminded me fondly of pie as it was filled with cinnamon apple. They otherwise also have other snacks and goodies which does include shaved iced, ice cream mochi, and ice cream. The shop is located in Fresno's "Old Chinatown" which has seen better times because even during the day it was pretty sketch. Freshest mochi ever! The texture of the mochi that's served here is unrivaled. I love the confections that are filled with fresh blueberries. The fresh fruit mochis are made to order. They also serve tasty red bean manju, the outside is so soft and the inside has so much red bean filling. I quite enjoyed their mochi ice cream as well. Their menu is online but for the ice cream call ahead and see what they have. A delightful, family owned and operated Mochi shop located in Downtown Fresno. I've been coming here since I was a kid and I will continue to come back as long as they're open. I love their regular mochi which I usually get frozen in packs packaged by the pound. Then I defrost it at home and either microwave it or put it in the toaster over. I love how gooey and stretchy the rice gets. Their manjus are a perfect little dessert or snack as well. I don't know the names of the different manjus, but my favorite is the light pink one with white bean filling. Their fruit filled manju are also a revelation. I'm just at a loss for words in how to describe this place and their various tasty offerings. I think it's safe to say that you won't be disappointed in whatever you try here unless you hate mochi. Finally got the opportunity to try this place after the first attempt was unsuccessful (due to Japanese New Year). We tried the mango ice cream mochi (actually a mango sorbet) and the chocolate touchdown ice cream mochi. Both were $3 and significant in size. The mochi exterior took about 10 minutes to thaw before you could eat it but once thawed, it's was great! The mochi was fresh and was the perfect level of sweetness. I would have preferred an actual mango ice cream compared to the sorbet but it wasn't a huge deal. Everything was reasonably priced. Thank you to my sweetie pie for finding this place for me so I could enjoy the best Mochi on our way to sequoia/kings canyon. Amazing! Softest mochi I've ever had. For reference I still have frozen benkyodo (rest in peace) mochi in my freezer,still. I have pretty simple tastes and usually stick to kinako red bean and habutai (pink w Lima bean). But, since they have other flavors I decided to also get peach and Nutella peanut butter reeses and the raspberry sorbet. I fully regret not preparing a cup of hot green tea in a thermos. The peach was amazing! So far I've eaten the peach and the habutai. I turned back and got the fresh blackberry and a pie filling blackberry. The mochi at Kogetsu-Do is one of the best I've had. Not only are they absolute units, the texture is a great balance of soft and chewy. At $1.50 each, it's a bargain. They're perfect to enjoy yourself or to share, although it's tempting to keep them all to yourself. Their hours and supply are limited so I recommend calling them beforehand to ensure that they're open and see what they have in stock especially if it's around the holidays. Going to echo what many people have said, and say that the daifuku is delicious. This place is way better than Fugetsu-Do, our shop here in Los Angeles. I would definitely return. It is definitely worth the trip if you're in Fresno. Now to the bad. Location is in Fresno's Chinatown. When we got there, a guy was laying right next to the entrance, completely out of it and muttering and other random shadiness was going on nearby. Lock your car. Secondly, and it's her prerogative, but I had no idea I needed a mask inside the store. Her attitude was aggressive and she told me to just cover my face with my shirt. Judging from other reviews, I'm not a one off case. She does this all the time and while trying to keep my shirt over my face, order and trying to get my wallet out to pay, her attitude was one of extreme impatience and annoyance. If she's the one making the daifuku, I would highly suggest she pay someone else to man the register, because human interaction is not her specialty. Things to glean from this review. Not the best area. Call ahead and try to have what you want made. Stock was so slim when we were there. Had to take what was left instead of what we wanted. Also, call ahead to make sure they're even open because we had to go two days in a row. First day, they were closed during business hours because she had apparently ran out of product. Second day, we got lucky. Bottom line, this is a gem, food wise in Fresno. I recommend going at least once, but definitely steel yourself against the owner's horrible customer service skills... because I have a feeling she's more often rude than pleasant. read more

These are completely handmade with love and care, although I personally don't like them all that much, this place still deserves a good rating overall. I like that they rotate some of the flavors, they had a toffee one the last time Ron and I were near and it was good. He ate the skin and let me nibble on the ice cream part. (So nice of him). The 3 oldest continuously run Japanese American businesses for over 100 years with the 4 year hiatus due to the unconstitutional incarceration of Japanese Americans during WWII in my recollection are Fu-getsudo- in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles; Kogetsudo- in Fresno, and Benkyo-do- in Japantown San Francisco. Kogetsudo- or Hall of the Lake & Moon is the only Wagashi/Japanese confection store in the Central Valley in what was once Japantown. The old Japanese Buddhist Temple is a short walk away. The proprietress is the granddaughter of the original owners, and she has innovated her Wagashi/ Japanese confections in keeping up w/ the times. Mochigashi is made w/ a rice covering.  Manju is shaped like wheat flour based bun. Dora Yaki is closer to a wheat flour pancake. Most have some kind of filling. Traditionally most of the sweet filling was either Kuroan (koo roh ahn) made from cooked Azuki beans which can be puréed smooth or have the rough skin, or smooth Shiroan (shee roh ahn)from Lima or other white colored beans. However, w/ cultural diffusion at the flick of the internet, chocolate, toffee, peanut butter, tropical fruit flavours, etc. are possible. I got the pancake folded around cooked apple & cinnamon filling, puréed rice Mochi filled w/ fresh whole blueberries braised in light sugar syrup, Chocolate Mochi w/ hazelnut toffee & coconut. Of the three, the modern, updated chocolate Mochi was a great amalgam of toasty toffee, nutty, woody whole hazelnut, & distinctive chewy coconut. This place is literally one of the best things about living in Fresno. Having a get together with friends? Make the trip to downtown Fresno and pick up a dozen of their absolutely amazing mochi. So. Good. Husband brought me home mochi for my birthday and I was SO excited. Yes, more excited than if he had gotten me ice cream cake, which was what I was initially hoping for. Apparently they also have mochi ice cream but were out that afternoon. They have weird hours. They're not open on Wednesday or Thursday so even though my birthday was Thursday, husband went on Tuesday. So I got to have mochi Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday! Moving on.... My favorite was still the classic red bean original one which is plain white/gray on the outside. The mochi is so soft and silky I was so pleased. Honestly I was a tiny bit skeptical because we were not in Little Tokyo and we had gone to Little Tokyo's own mochi shop in LA earlier that year and the ones we tried were a tiny bit of a letdown for me. BUT the texture of the mochi hubby brought home was so good, definitely tasted fresh and I loved the moist fillings in the blueberry one and the chocolate with cherry almond toffee. Particularly the chocolate with cherry almond toffee was also amazing and unlike anything I've ever had before! First off I was not expecting a hard chunk of toffee in the middle of a mochi, so it was a little weird but the flavors were so cool, the cherry and toffee and chocolate combination works. We showed up at around 9:15 am because we wanted to be one of the first ones and we've heard this place runs out of Mochi quick. We decided to go for the pink with Lima bean, green tea flavor with whole red bean, Strawberry manju with real strawberries, osonae and 2 mango sorbet Mochi ice creams. When we asked for another mango Icecream to be added to the order she gave us attitude. At the point we just wanted to hurry up and get out of there because she was making us anxious. I didn't like how she gave us attitude just for asking for one more thing to be added to our order. You would think if you're running a business you'd be content the customer ordering more is a good thing since it means more sales for the business. I've worked in customer service and she lacks good customer service skills. The Mochi was a 10/10 which made up for her attitude. The ones we really liked was the strawberry manju, and osonae. This hole in the wall, Family owned Mochi/Manju shop is located in the heart of Downtown Fresno. Convenient, free street parking is available directly in front of the shop. I've been here a few times now and there is always handmade Mochi Ice Cream available, although the flavors usually vary each time. They never seem to run out of Vanilla Mochi Ice Cream, which isn't bad if you just like your Mochi IC plain. The only Mochi which I probably wouldn't get again is the Mochi Sorbet. For $2.25/piece, I'd rather spend those bucks on the Mochi IC rather than the Sorbet. The Ice cream just seems to taste better with the Mochi dough. I've also tried their homemade Manju which was also delicious but I didn't care too much about the blueberries inside since it made the taste quite sour to my taste buds.
