Some years ago I used Knowles Apothecary for a compounded prescription for a dog with Cushing's Disease. Service was always quick and easy. I just went to the prescription counter, picked up the medication and was on my way. My main complaint was the parking. The lot is off of busy Connecticut and the entrance ramp is somewhat steep. Parking is tight and sometimes full. I used to have my step-sister come with me so she could wait in the car in case I couldn't find a spot. More recently we have a dog on compounded medication for gastrointestinal issues. There was a little confusion about her prescription because it was first submitted by an emergency vet and then transferred to our regular vet. Staff was very helpful getting it straightened out. We also opted for delivery at a nominal fee and are so glad we did. It's easy, reliable and the medication is hung right on our front door knob. I must say for very long term prescriptions there are some very good mail order pharmacies that are less expensive. read more

I needed a compounded med to be done immediately as the physician did not send in the script right away. They were not sure they could rush the script as there were others as well that needed to be done right away. I am grateful that they put in the request and they did accomplish it and it was delivered today. (promised for 4pm Friday) I appreciate that they understood the situation and did what they could do to help. I have had very positive experiences with staff and pharmacists at Knowles. Our cat was diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in May 2023 and required 3 medications asap. The cardiologist at a respected animal cardiology group recommended Knowles, which compounded the meds on an emergency basis following receipt of the prescriptions. The pharmacists will add your cats favorite flavorings. One med (Plavix) is very bitter to which they added a bitter blocker and roast chicken flavor. My cat still hated it, and I called for advice. A pharmacist suggested adding marshmallow flavor, and said I should bring the bottle in that same day so they could add the flavoring. Yes, our cat liked roast chicken with marshmallow flavor - go figure. A second refill needed some flavor modification and adjustment and the lab manager - who understood that the anti-clot medicine was critically needed - compounded a new solution that same day. The degree to which Knowles worked to ensure that the compounded medicines were acceptable to my cat has been impressive. Finally, because Knowles is local, I do not have to worry about mail delivery, strikes, or other transportation interruptions. This is a great place to come if you're looking for excellent customer service. Besides from the apothecary side, they are a full service pharmacy and compounding specialists. I stopped in this afternoon to inquire about herbal support for my dog's diabetic issues. The poor guy has to get two injections a day from his very anxious mommy (Me). I read about the effects of Gymnema Leaf on blood sugar levels and thought, since this place in on my way home, that I'd ask the experts. Lucky timing. They have a clinical herbalist on staff M - F from 11 - 3. Loni answered a lot of my questions and even looked up information about a supplement I was considering purchasing online. They didn't carry it, but upon reading about its contents, Loni said it was all natural and would order it for the store. I still need to discuss my dog's condition with his vet before I take any further action, but if I do decide to supplement his insulin with alternative health care, Knowles Apothecary is the place I'll turn to. read more

Knowles called to discuss my vet's order for a liquid compounded medication, assured me "roast chicken" flavor would be the most palatable and I agreed to that. The soonest the medication could be ready was at least 2 days later, after 4 PM on a Friday giving only a 2-hour pick-up window. I had to force my gentle cat to take 1st dose Friday PM. 2nd dose on Saturday AM was even more difficult. I then smelled it - no perceptible aroma of any kind. I tasted it - horribly bitter with ABSOLUTELY NO "ROASTED CHICKEN" FLAVOR. Knowles is closed all weekend, but I left a message. The following Monday I spoke to a pharmacist. He told me the medicine is terribly bitter and that he could add something to counteract the bitterness. When I asked why this was not done for the original order there no reply other than that I could make a trip to Knowles and they would add this ingredient. As I had no confidence in the compounding or even in the actual identify of the product I returned it and requested a refund. No apology, no explanation...Treatment delayed nearly a week in a very ill animal. read more

Who says excellent customer service is a lost art? Alan at Knowles Apothecary amazed me today as he went above and beyond any call of duty to help get me some very necessary medicine for my cat on an expedited basis. He listened to my problem, went out of his way to quickly contact my vet and he expedited the compounding of the medication. I don't know that any pharmacy other than Knowles (and Alan) would have done that for me and I cannot sing their praises enough. read more

My dog was very sick and my vet wrote a script for a difficult to find medicine for him. I called all over- CVS, Walgreens, other vet clinics. One referred me to Knowles - they actually compound their own meds here! I called ahead and they said they had it and could fill the 30 days worth, no problem. When I walked in, I fell in love instantly. The store is stocked with homeopathic remedies, crystals, aromatherapy infusers, as well as medical supplies. Everyone who worked there was SO NICE and incredibly helpful. I was in and out in under 20 minutes. This is a wonderful, locally owned small business that I feel really good about supporting. I use them for my dog's medication after he was diagnosed with congestive heart failure. He's smart and a jerk, so pilling him is hard. I currently get 2 of his 4 daily meds from Knowles. You do have to call 2 days in advance of needing the meds, but they're quick. I ordered a refill online Tuesday 5/9 at 2:30P. The nice man who works the phone at the pharmacy (not sure if he's a tech or a pharmacist, sorry!) called me and told it wouldn't be ready until Thursday. Fine. 2 days in advance, remember? I follow directions. The vet had to call in a second prescription, so I told the nice man to hold off filling the first until they got the second. Meds were on my porch this morning 5/12 when I went out at 9:45A. Delivery is about $11 for UPS to DC. I hate driving, so it works for me. read more

Over 2 years ago my Ragdoll Cat Twilight had a blood clot in his hind legs and was diagnosed with heart failure and AFIB- the Cardiologist Vet told us he would have only 6-9 months tops to live! And he was put on 4 medications and the Best pharmacy we found to compound his Meds into droppers that he could tolerate (the only way the poor thing will easily take them) is Knowles! That's right they shipped to us all the way to NYC and now to MA where we've moved! Pros: Personalized, friendly, if-we-don't-carry-your-Rx-we'll-get-it-and-drive-it-to-your-house type of customer service. Literally. It's a mixed blessing that most of them know me by name, but I love the service and think the staff is top notch. From checking to see if there are lower cost alternatives to a med my Dr has prescribed, and calling her to check, to offering advice on which alternative therapies would be complementary rather counter productive to my RX, their service is exemplary. Their competitive pricing, wide variety of natural remedies and holistic medicines, and the fact that they offer compounding as well, make it a one stop shop and time saver for me. Cons: They are open from M-F 9-6, Sat from 9-1 and closed Sunday. These hours aren't always compatible with my hectic schedule. Parking can be a pain when the small lot, for such a large business building, is full. All in all, their great service, variety and prices far exceed the sometimes inconvenient parking and hours. read more

I have no knowledge of Knowles Apothecary other than its non-pharmacy function as a UPS Access point. I just dropped off two boxes at the behest of UPS (the boxes were mistakenly sent to my home). Each box was about 1 cubic foot and weighed 4 lbs. When I walked into the store I was greeted with a "cold" stare by a woman sitting behind a desk. I was taken aback by her glare and thinking I was in the wrong place I mouthed the letters "UPS". She reluctantly directed me to place the boxes on the floor and seemed to imply by her attitude and body language (dismissive and annoyed) that I was an inconveniencing her by my presence. I will not go there again. There is a UPS store on Viers Mill RD that is better equipped to receive packages and welcomes customers courteously. read more

My vet failed to call in my prescription for antibiotics my sick kitten really needed asap. I found that out and got a prescription over to Knowles around 5:00pm. Ok, they say, it'll be ready tomorrow. As soon as they heard the panic in my voice the pharmacist said never mind, we can get it done tonight (even though they closed in just an hour.) And they did! I am sad to say that I am moving all of my business from Knowles to Walgreens. I was initially excited to use a non-chain store pharmacy. However, over the past year, Knowles' service has gotten progressively worse. They don't follow up when there are issues, they commit to delivering one day and then don't show up or call, they claim they never receive prescriptions even though I was in the Doctor's office and watched it successfully faxed to them. In addition, I got no response from Knowles when I expressed my disappointment directly to them. read more

My veterinary practice uses Knowles Apothecary to compound medicines for my sick Tonkinese kitty, Benjamin. I am so grateful that they are there and that they are just 10 minutes away from my home by car. Today, the young man who helped me at the register carefully explained how to administer the medication, rather than my having find out on my own how to dose Benjamin Pearl. (In the past, the techs have seemed confused about finding the prescription that you have come to pick up even after a "heads-up" from them on the phone.) My only complaint is the time that it takes for the compounded prescriptions to become available (2-3 days). When you have a gravely ill pet, the wait is excruciating. Additionally, employees on the floor are helpful and will special order any supplements or herbs that are not in stock but available from their distributors and give me a discount, to boot! I have been coming to Knowles for 5 years, filling various prescriptions for my dog and myself. Each time I visit, the staff greets me by name and knows exactly what I'm there for, whether it be for prescription drugs or their various lines of herbal remedies and natural supplements. When I need medications ordered, it is always done in a timely fashion. They're very inexpensive compared to other compounding pharmacies in the area, and I trust that each medication is made with care and concern for my dog. We LOVE Knowles Apothecary! For us and for our dog, who gets cuddles and treats from the pharmacy team whenever we visit. They are a fantastic team, always such a pleasure to interact with (in person and over the phone), and they feel like a family. They are professional, quick, organized, and have options for providing meds in liquid form, which is hard to find in other pharmacies. They even offer delivery, which is a lifesaver. Very good service, scripts are ready when they say they are and they follow up if our vet doesn't return their call. A great range of natural pet products that the staff will locate if they are out and if one employee doesn't know the answer to your question they will ask others until they find someone who does. I can't agree with the reviews saying their customer service is excellent; I think it's terrible. They have odd rules for what they consider a refill which you are somehow supposed to know by mindreading. My doctor called in a new prescription for a medication they had compounded in the past. For a different number of capsules. Even though it was for a different amount and the old rx did not have any refills on it, they decided to classify it as a refill. Therefor, they would not fill it until I called to authorize it. Fortunately, I called before I went to pick it up. They told me it wouldn't be ready for four days. Just be aware if you go there, if you have had a prescription filled by them before, if your doctor calls in something similar, I'm assuming even if it's a long time later, CALL THEM to authorize it or they won't fill it. I would only go there again if I needed a medication compounded. And at least now I know the secret to getting a new prescription filled if it's the same medication. read more
