My wife and I were walking around downtown Dan Diego and we came across this small tasting room and we sat down at the bar. A really nice bar tender poured me a solid IPA and we talked about good places to eat and thing we should see. I ordered another IPA and we continued to chat with the bartender. It was a great 40 minutes or so and another perfect day in San Diego! I loved how small and quaint this place was. It was pretty full to a lazy afternoon. read more

Stopped by this spot because my mom and i had to really use the bathroom lol. We also decided to try a brew. I ordered a stout and the hops were hopping! If you enjoy more hoppy beers this is a good spot for you! Even their lighter beers had a bite of flavor. Definitely stronger for my liking, but I'm still giving 5 stars because the service was amazing. read more

Next door to Knotty Barrel in Gaslamp. Smaller brewery but do not let its size fool you, they have delicious beer! Friendly bartender. They are only opened for a few hours at night during the week, & from lunchtime to evening during the weekends. Check their website for hours! Chocolate Stout: Oh wow, this beer is pretty strong! Dope Spot. Very easy to hang out here, and kill a few pints Staff was cool, game was on tv, beer was delicious. However, that $20 turkey sandwich was the worst thing Ive ordered in a long time. On my way to another location late afternoon on a weekday I saw Knotty Brewing and decided to stop in for a flight. Sitting at the bar, service was slow and not friendly. There were only a few other people there so not sure why. I selected a couple of their own beers and a couple from their guest taps. Some of the best beer in San Diego. Stopped in about a month ago and sampled some beer. They have a style of beer that I have not been able to find anywhere else. "Rausch" style beer. The malt that they use is smoked. It gives the beer a very smokey and meaty flavor. Just the right amount of hops and not too bitter. It is named "7 years of smoke." And I have to mention that the service is outstanding. Also on Sundays "grenades" are half price. A "grenade" is half a "growler" Actually as I am writing this I am drinking one of their beers!!!! LOL read more

We had tried several different places this day, you can search for the other ones, they were not great. Knotty Brewing was AMAZING. We got personalized attention, great beer, snacks from the place next door were delivered to us at the bar, and most importantly, they were playing the football game on the TV. I highly recommend this place, we tried every beer they had on tap that day and I couldn't say anything bad about any of them. Their samplers are reasonably priced, and as I said, there are TVs. We were walking by and Daniel accosted us by saying "I'm here" and we said "so are we!" So. Wow. Great beer here - even for my "I only like Bass Ale" husband. Daniel is AMAZING - so much attention to customer service you'd think he owns the place. And, the music is very 60's-70's which was fun! Stopped here for a quick flight of beers to get a feel for another brewery that's on the newer side since my last visit to San Diego last year. Alas, I did not try the food, but it all looked tasty, from what I saw. Sometimes I wish I had the stomach room (and budget) for bites and beers at every place I stop, but beers are always a priority during a brewery visit. So let's get into it. Grabbed a flight of four beers and went for a bit of a variety, with a kolsch, IPA, porter and Black IPA. Service was fine enough, though I probably would have ordered the flight a little differently, myself. That's more of a preference thing, so no big deal. The kolsch was standard, if not a little bland. The IPA wasn't bad, but I wouldn't have called it a NE style IPA. It wasn't hazy, but definitely lower on assertive bitterness. Maybe more of a standard east coast style, in terms of lower IBUs and a heavier breadier malt profile than its citrusy, bright west coast counterpart. Just not what I personally would call "NE" style. That said, the porter and black IPA were both solid offerings, and I find black IPAs to be a pretty hard style for most breweries to nail. So, kudos to Knotty for that! It was a short visit and I didn't look around too much, but I think they're doing a solid job for being on the younger side. New breweries take a while to work out the kinks, and if their beer is representative of their early efforts, they'll be putting out some solid product in no time. Can't wait to check out how they're doing next year. read more

Great sausage, great beer. Ordered a flight and sausage trio. The mustard and sauerkraut paired well with the sausages and beer. It was great for a pair. :) They're dog friendly and you see a couple of cute dogs strolling and dining in. Very happy to have found this place during our Fourth of July get away. Just happened to be walking by on my way to the Gaslamp and one of the bartenders approached me offerring a $2 shot of craft beer. I decided to give it a quick shot. The size of the shot cup was fair. There were other choices of beer. Also the beer was sold by various sizes and the shots are also sold as samplers. During my brief time there I enjoyed the environment and it was chill and laid back. I will be back again and I will be sure to try the restaurant next door. read more

I stopped by today for the Knotty Brewery grand opening. It's a small room attached to Knotty Barrel, and at some point they'll be integrated more. For now, you can't bring your beer from the brewery to the restaurant and you can't order food at the brewery. Pretty annoying as I planned to eat and drink. So here I sit at Knotty Barrel not enjoying a new spot. I tried their blonde in the brewery which was ok. $6 pints or $8 for 4 tasters. There's nothing particularly wrong with this small brewery, but there also doesn't seem to be anything special about it either. read more

Knotty Brewing is a small little brewery in the gas lamp district of San Diego. It only has about 3 tables but everyone in there is friendly and welcoming! The owner is so nice and greets you as you come in and walks around and talks with everyone! The beer is diverse and tasted great! There are 12 beers to sample. The flight is 4 - 4oz classes. The cost was only $9. Excellent value for some excellent beers. The Friar was a full body dark/porter. It was my favorite, although I did have a beer that I did not enjoy. The bar tender was extremely friendly. read more

During our visit to Coronado Island, we found this brewery and boy was it a rad find! They have some really good traditional German beers, but also some good IPA and others. Just know that the Brewery is different than the restaurant two doors down. Cali law has something to do with brewery selling hard alcohol. Wifey and I got the flights and every beer we tried was spectacular! Its small and quaint but they do have an outdoor area as well. We will defineately be coming back. read more

From date nights to just eating out. As locals here in downtown for over 5years it's always been hard to find that one local place. Not only do you guys have an awesome team upfront that show a rarety now of days of awesome customer service. But the chefs you guys have back in the kitchen keep bringing us back. Just gonna be real: it seems like this place is just trying to cash in on the brewery scene and being so close to a baseball stadium. For a good model on how to accomplish this, visit Half Door down the street. We tried the super fresh, a Belgian wit, the cascadian dark ale, and a belgian table beer. Of these, only the super fresh was enjoyable. I usually enjoy good belgian style beers and dark ales, but the cascadian was not even worth finishing. I will give them the benefit of the doubt that they are still relatively new (I was told since last October) and trying to figure everything out, but it seems like there's a long road ahead to stay competitive. read more

Small, low key, but great spot! Banana Pancakes, the marzen, and the west coast were our favorites. We even tried the smoked beer which we aren't usually a fan of, but this one was pretty good! My wife and I had dinner here last night. Sat in back patio where it was less crowded. Pleasant atmosphere, allows dogs (we love dogs), music was a smidge loud but not bad. Service was fast & friendly. Wife ordered a stout, I ordered a blonde ale, both were good, paired well with the pretzel w cheese dip appetizer. My wife had fish & chips for dinner, I had the meatloaf. Both were very tasty, mine had a slight spicy kick to it that the beer helped wash down. Overall I good experience. Not sure we'd come back with so many other places to try in the area. Nothing overly unique...that's why I gave them 4 stars. To get a 5 star rating they'd need to come up with something that's unique & special. read more

I would be giving this brewery 4 stars if it weren't for the beer tender. When walking in with my boyfriend to order drinks he specifically pointed me out and asked for me ID but didn't ask for my bfs. As a bartender/beer tender out of respect i feel you should ask for all IDs if you feel one person in the party is under 21. Moved to San Diego recently and have my first visitor. Back on the Central Coast I worked for a brewery myself so I took my visitor to where I'm comfortable. Let me tell you, Tom is superb! I let him know we were more into Ales but open to Lagers. Tom was more than accommodating, and brought us a few splashes of Knotty beers and we decided on the British Pale Ale. It was a slow Monday so he sat and talked with us more in depth about the beer, the industry, and just general life in San Diego since I'm new. It was such a pleasure to have a beer tender who is fun and knowledgeable in his craft. He brought us food menus and made suggestions, which we ordered and loved! I highly recommend their grilled cheese (which has three cheeses!) All in all I loved the experience, the beer and Tom! He's definitely solidified me as a new regular from here forward. read more

Knotty Brewing is Knotty Barrel's newest add on. Knotty Brewing is located right next to Knotty Barrel and you can watch our Brew Master, Donovan Lane, working away through Knotty Barrel's viewing window on the way out to the Backyard. In between brewing you can catch Donovan out front in our tasting room, but be prepared to talk beer, because that is his passion! Knotty Barrel serves Knotty Brewing Co. beers on 4 of their tap handles, but you can get a taste of all of them at Knotty Brewing. History

Established in 2016.

Even before opening Knotty Barrel (our sister venue) we have been passionate about beer. Ken Lovi has been in the hospitality business since 1983 (yes that's correct) and has been running and owning restaurants in San Diego since 1995. Ken remembers when the first beer craze came to the US, in 1995, when bars where putting on 24-40 draft handles and the big focus was European style beers, along with the beginning of craft beers such as Karl Strauss, Humboldt Brewing, Sierra Nevada to mention a few. Since that time we have been passionate about not just craft, but great beers. Over time and with the constant nag (in a good way) of regulars we decided to get into the brewery business. One thing that was important to us was to not just make good beer, but to make beer we actually drink and enjoy.

We got sat right away in the happy hour area. As we were walking in I noticed the decor looked really nice and the ambience of the restaurant felt clean and modern. We ordered some happy hour cocktails to start and they were really strong (but tasty) in my opinion. Maybe I'm just lightweight though. We also ordered some oysters, the shrimp aguachile, and the smashburger to share which were all tasty. Service was good, our waitress was friendly and checked up on us. Overall a successful happy hour visit and would visit again as they seem to have a rotating menu.

I got my standard hazy IPA and my partner got the special banana cream pie fluff. He was able to try that and the s'mores stout before we committed to a glass.

The place is spacious and has tons of indoor and outdoor seating, it's kid and dog friendly and has a 21+ area if you're not a fan of the aforementioned kids and canines. Good beer menu, nice mix of styles and they have a couple seltzer options too. Friendly service. There's tacos and coffee nearby and this is an easy spot to spend a few hours.
