It has been a long time since I last stopped in here. Place looks the same as before. This time I arrived early enough to have dinner. When I was walking around downtown, I did not realize the Padres had a home game the same day. Place was busy when I stopped in but managed to get a table relatively quickly. I started off with a Scottish egg which I have never had before. It was very interesting to try. Main dish was fish and chips. Very good. Battered fish is three smaller strips instead of one large piece of fish which I am more used to. I had a flight of three beers. They offer a flight of three, four, and five beers. I tried Father Ted Belgian Blonde, Spring Training IPA, and Gimmick Ale White Chocolate Peanut Butter Golden Milk Stout. The first two were good. The Milk Stout was different . Service was good. On a Tuesday, I visited this brewery with a friend and his son. Since there wasn't a Padres game, we were fortunate to find plenty of available tables. The place is packed during game day. The staff greeted us promptly and seated us on the second-floor patio, as we requested. We were told it's a mixture of brewery and an Irish pub. They have first floor and second floor seating area. Throughout our visit, the service was excellent, and our server checked in on us frequently. I enjoyed their Hoban House IPA--a refreshing choice. We also ordered a cheeseburger with fries for my friend's son, and the fries were both fresh and delicious. My friends and I wanted to enjoy the amazing weather, so we were on the search of an outdoor rooftop bar around the Gaslamp District. Unfortunately there were none open around 4pm on a weekday, but one of my friends remembered that Half Door Brewing Company (HDBC) had a great upstairs, outdoor deck. We got to HDBC around 4:15pm and requested to sit outside on the 2nd floor. Can't beat the vibe and scenic views of downtown, including Petco Park. It was exactly what we were looking for. We made it in time for happy hour, and we certainly took advantage of the happy hour food and well cocktails. The food was good. We ordered the pretzel bites, truffle fries, and mac and cheese. The pretzel bites were the best of the 3, and they were quite unique. They were like pretzel biscuits with a soft, doughy crumb. The dipping cheese and mustard were excellent. It's an old style house that's been refurbished with great bar seating indoor with classy architecture and quaint outdoor seating. We sat on their terrace top and had great vibes with sun, breeze, and the city view. Our server, Dominic, was awesome with lots of energy and attention to our dining experience. We started off with pretzel bites, and they were salted to perfection. My colleagues just got drinks but I was starving for some solid food. This is such a cute place that really makes you feel like you're hanging out at somebody's house. There's something very homie about it, and it's probably because of the mismatch chairs, the wooden furniture, and the bookshelves. The service here is excellent, people are friendly in an authentic way that makes you feel like they enjoy being there and they're just locals, and not like you're being sold something. They have an excellent selection of beer, and almost all of their food is very good. I hate their pretzels. People rave about them so you should definitely try it for yourself, but it seemed to me like a burnt croissant and not a pretzel. Not the kind of bread that I was expecting. This place is down the street from my law school so when I'm in town I love to visit them for a nice cold beer and some bites! My husband and I shared some scotch eggs and ahi tuna tacos. Obviously, when we were younger we'd spend a lot of time together, but as we've navigated through our adulting years, hanging out wasn't a priority. When I have an opportunity to spend quality time with my buddies like watch our Padres, I take advantage of it. Watching our Padres lose in a thriller was a bummer, but we had a great time pre-partying with memorable grub and noteworthy customer service at Half Door Brewing. Half Door is located in downtown San Diego, a hop, skip, and jump away from Petco Park, so this is an excellent spot to have drinks and eats before you watch our Padres. Half Door is a short jaunt from any of the parking closeby to the stadium. It is just around the corner from Bub's at the Ballpark, City Tacos, a short walk from WestBrew, and across the street from Borrego Kitchen + Cocktails. It's on the corner of 9th and Island Avenues. The decor of Half Door reminds me of an old schoolhouse or an old Western saloon. The main reason we chose Half Door was because of them being open early compared to the other breweries. My buddies have a hankering for specialty and craft beers and my jam is Shirley Temples, which were inconsistent here. There is plenty of seating, indoor, outdoor, and seating upstairs where you can see Petco Park. Rhett was our server and he provided outstanding customer service and was just a good dude. He was patient, friendly, personable, and a conscientious employee. My friends and I loved the ambience, the proximity to Petco, notable customer service, and most importantly, the memorable and quality food. I had intended to purchase an appetizer and an entree, but my buddies each got appetizers, so we just shared what we ordered. Thanks to my pals for ordering a variety, so that I could sample multiple dishes. Please mimic the following that we ordered and I'm confident you will be satisfied: the Chef's Meat & Cheese Board, Scotch Egg, White Truffle Flatbread, and Salted Pretzel Bites. I ordered the salted pretzel bites, which come with Bearleener Dijon mustard and HDBC pale ale cheese sauce. The pretzel bites were buttery, hearty, pillowy, and so addicting that I wished I hadn't shared. The meat & cheese board comes with daily cheese & charcuterie. This board was plentiful, yummy, and was enough for our party of four. Half Door's menu offering has some British/United Kingdom inspired plates like the Scotch egg, which is an Irish sausage and panko encrusted hard boiled egg with Bearleener dijon mustard. We split that in fours and I wished once again that I had that all to my own. First time eating this and it won't be my last time. Just like the pretzel bites, the white truffle flatbread was buttery, addicting, and I just couldn't have one piece. It had mushrooms, balsamic marinated artichokes, arugula, and Asiago cheese. It's too bad that I couldn't have this and all the other dishes all to myself. Our Padres didn't come out victorious last night, but I secured a blessed victory by spending much cherished time with my BFFs. Every time I have come here I have had a positive experience. Not only is this a perfect spot for pre-gaming before a ballgame but also for everything in between. Besides being a good location near Petco park, I believe it used to be an old house and there is a nice outdoor seating area as well as an upstairs with a homey feel. Each occasion, our servers have been friendly and seem to enjoy working here. They also are quick with bringing out food and drinks. On this occasion I tried the "Smoke & Mirrors" cocktail with mezcal. As a mezcal lover, I really enjoyed this drink and think the pineapple and coconut flavors went very well together. My husband and I could see Half Door Brewing from our hotel room across the street. We decided to go and see if we could have a meal with our dog, Suki, in tow. And of course, she was welcome, not just on the outdoor patio but inside too. We plopped ourselves on their loveseat in front of a low coffee table next to a bookcase upstairs. It was comfortable and there were TVs playing football throughout. Suki settled herself in the crevice between the table and the bookcase surveying the people walking by. We were there well after the lunch hour so it wasn't as busy. We ordered some drinks and the HDBC burger. He had a hazy IPA while I went with a sparkling white wine. We had not been drinking too much in the last year but this was a vacation so we let loose. The burger was cut in half for us and the fries were delectable. The burger was nicely cooked to medium as requested. We enjoyed the bite and the drinks. This brewery/restaurant was a great spot to unwind and I was so happy that they were so dog friendly! Suki was on her best behavior but she had some trouble with the stairs so she had to be carried. Service was excellent and we walked around the area after our late lunch to burn off some calories. read more

Half Door Brewing is located in East Village San Diego on the corner of Island Ave. From the looks of the outside, you might think it is a house, but in reality, it is a lovely brewery serving up some of the finest beers offered. We dropped by after the San Diego Half Marathon for some of the specials they were offering the runners who participated in the race. The layout of the place offers patio dining and also has chairs inside as well as upstairs,over looking the streets with heaters. We were seated promptly and were given glasses of water and menus to order by our nice waitress. We went ahead and ordered the specials they were offering and opted for the Puerta Mexican Lager and the avocado toast. The beer was light and crisp straight from the tap and was quite refreshing. The avocado toast was presented beautifully on a nice clean white plate with firmly toasted thick bread and green ripe mashed avocados laying beneath tomatoes that had a balsamic reduction and the dish had chiffonade basil as a garnish. This was my first time having a balsamic reduction drizzled over my avocado toast, and it went perfectly well together. It was a nice place to dine in and catch up with friends over good food and drinks. I'll definitely be back and try more of the beers and food offered here. Pretty chill place even during a Comic-Con Saturday night. Cozy outdoor seating with its countryside house front patio layout. My sister and I just shared some appetizers as dinner and our favorite one that we tried was the scotch egg. Lightly crispy on the outside and the Irish sausage surrounding the hard-boiled egg was tasty and not overly salty nor greasy. We also ordered the salted pretzel bites since it seemed like they were popular based on the many pics of them uploaded here. They were alright; I expected dense chewy soft pretzel goodness but they were pretty much kinda-stale mini dinner rolls with a slight crispy exterior. I think people really like them though because they do have the pretzel salt on top. Nothing amazing about the BBQ chicken flatbread especially with the BBQ sauce tasting like a cheap grocery store one. I tried the Hoban House IPA. I'm no beer connoisseur and can't really fully describe the taste well, but if you like grapefruit you'll enjoy this one because its flavor is really prominent lol.
