UPDATE (ON REVIEW ON GOOGLE): Let it be noted that nothing got resolved - John simply confirmed over the phone that the widths of the ropes are indeed different every time. I still don't understand why, and it continues to be an inconvenience. They also said they'd send over a new box of ropes (which I didn't request--not sure how that addresses the issue), but they never arrived, nor did I ever receive a confirmation email that it was sent. Go figure. Furthermore, I recently placed another order on a package, which the USPS lost or misdelivered. I reached out to Knot & Rope Supply just to be told I need to deal with the USPS myself and they'll have to refund me for the order - Knot & Rope is not responsible. I was told that the shipping company would need information they'd not be able to provide. They have my name, my number, tracking info, address, and credit card information -- what more they could possibly need? I'm a bit confused about that. It is hands down the worst customer experience I've had with any company. Regarding my above "never again" comment, apparently they have a monopoly on all distribution of cotton ropes on the internet, so I must correct this to "probably again." Don't trust them with your rock climbing rope. You'll probably get a spool of yarn. Unless, you are free-soloing, in which case, maybe you can knit a sweater. ORIGINAL REVIEW: Every. Single. Time I order from them I somehow end up with ropes with differing widths. The 1/4" rope ends up being super thin in one box, and much thicker in the next order, same with the 3/8" and 1/2" rope. I don't even know anymore which size is correct and whether my latest order was right or not. It's incredibly frustrating, and trying to communicate it to the customer service representative is a whole different story. Reaching out to them is an absolutely dreadful experience. I placed my first order recently for a specific length of rope for a project that I am working on. After receiving the order and cutting the rope into individual pieces, I found that the amount the I received is 8 feet less than what I ordered. I contacted the company in order to let them know. Instead of sending me the correct (additional) amount that I had ordered, they informed me that the rope shrinks after it is being cut; therefore, I was supposed to order 10-15% more than I actually need to account for the shrinkage. This didn't make much sense to me. Wouldn't it easier for them to account for the shrinkage by sending more rope than the customer ordered since they know it shrinks after being cut? They could have sent me the rope that they shorted me by, but instead they wanted me to pay another [outrageous] shipping charge for the minimal amount of rope that I still needed. Okay whatever, so I placed the order for the rope, paid for shipping (which they discounted, thank goodness), but then when I receive the 2nd shipment of rope, it is the incorrect diameter and does not match the rope that I originally ordered!! WTH?! I don't think it is that hard to cut rope to a specific length or send the correct product that was ordered but obviously it is VERY difficult for this company. Not even bothering trying to contact them because somehow, they will have another excuse as to why they can't get orders correct. read more

Save your time a buy elsewhere. I ordered 360 ft of rope. Cut it up for my project and realized that I had been shorted about 15 ft of rope. Pretty annoying. Contact the company to let them know. Customer "service" says that they didn't mess up, the rope shrinks when cut and I should have ordered 10-15% more. NO WHERE ON THE PRODUCT DESCRIPTION PAGE DOES IT SAY THAT. Now have to buy more rope from them to finish the project, not happy at all. read more

Had an excellent experience. Ordered dock lines for 30' sailboat. Web site was a bit confusing, so I called. Great service and the lines arrived within a few days, exactly as ordered. New lines shrink 10%-15% so I took that into account. I'm writing here because I saw some negative reviews on yelp and almost didn't choose this vendor. It seems that their cotton rope will shrink 10-15%. They do not inform you of this fact on the product detail page, the Cotton Rope page, or during checkout. There was only a blurb about the rope expanding in diameter on the 3-strand Cotton Rope sub-page and advised to order a smaller diameter if a specific diameter was required. So I order 49' of rope and when it arrives, I immediately cut it into (7) 7' sections. I get to the last section and I am 4' 3" too short. I notify customer service and I receive a matter-of-fact reply that I should have ordered extra rope and she included a screenshot of the blurb on the 3-strand Cotton Rope sub-page which only mentions diameter, not length, and you will never see if you directly link to the product detail page or arrive via a search engine. Only after I express my incredulity to her response and threaten to notify the blogger who provided the link about the poor customer service that I received did she offer to provide free shipping on the second order. I still had to pay for another 7' (scratch that, 8') section of rope to get my last section. But I was done with this company and just wanted to get back to my project. They finally went back and updated the text on the 3-strand product sub-page at least to caution on length as well as diameter, but still nothing on the product detail page or the checkout page. When I receive my replacement 8' strand, I will be recording opening the box, taking out the rope, and measuring, so I have video evidence if I come up short again. In a remote area heading off an impending erosion problem we needed rope. Found one on eBay and another Knot & Rope Supply had on Amazon, both about the same price, Amazon's seemed better, we placed our order. Amazon sent their confirmation and our funds were withdrawn. Next day Brinda Calkins from Knot & Rope sends an email informing us they had listed the wrong price. We could either cancel our order or pay an addition $200; which option did we prefer? We reply, our order has been confirmed, our funds withdrawn, we've got a time sensitive project on hold, sorry you made a mistake, we prefer that you fill our order as agreed and paid. No response from Brinda... Next day, email from Amazon, "your order has been canceled." We reply with the same explanation sent to Brinda, plus we quote Amazon's own words. "We guarantee purchases from third-party sellers when payment is made via the Amazon.com website... The condition of the item you buy and its timely delivery are guaranteed under the Amazon A-to-z Guarantee." We're expecting Amazon will live up to their word. Amazon sends a cookie cutter reply deflecting the issue and going into detail on how we can change our payment method. They state both that our funds aren't withdraw until our shipment is being prepared, and since the order was canceled a refund was immediately issued. Together these statements make no sense and separately neither is true. We send Amazon another email; no response... Neither company is acknowledging responsibility nor making any effort to work toward a solution. Surprisingly, Amazon completely ignores their own Guarantee and ignores us as well. We review Knot&Rope's website, complementing themselves on, "exceeding customer's expectations," and being, "here to serve you." From the owner's own bio, "He loves making sure Knot & Rope customers have an excellent shopping experience." We mail owner John Hartenberg a hardcopy letter, confident he has no idea how deplorably his company has handled this matter. We're sure he'll want to straighten it out. Hartenberg replies by email taking the position that we're to blame for ordering a rope they incorrectly priced while ignoring our resultant loss of critical time and damages. Nothing about his response suggests he cares about our, "excellent shopping experience." He evades all accountability and couldn't care less about the results of a mistake which is 100% his company's doing. His attitude appears callous and dangerously at odds for a supplier of rope on which climbers, tree cutters and others entrust their lives. We dig deeper, find multiple complaints posted on Yelp, BBB, and others describing this company's canceled orders, lack of communication and flaunting indifference. We learn they're only a middleman profiting off their skill at merchandizing, promotion, fancy websites, and self proclaimed professionalism. When you have to depend upon them to responsibly address problems, if you need this company to live up to all their self acclaimed magnificence, if you have to depend upon John Hartenberg, you will find yourself left hanging. Saw the other reviews for this company, not sure what their beef was. Anyway, I needed some rope for my house for a few projects and saw what I needed on their website but called them anyway to make sure I was getting the right thing. They were very helpful and got my order out that same day. The communication process was excellent, I got my tracking number for the shipment right away and the order arrived within a day (granted I live 100 miles from their warehouse, but still...). Great prices on the rope I got and the quality was really good. I will buy from them again. read more

Took 40 days to receive shipment. Called twice to learn that the decorative hardware was back order. Making rope handrail with Manila rope. Has been lying in the 90 plus degree heat and direct sun for 48 hours. Impossible to tread rope into decorative holders. Called customer services, how long does the rope take to dry out and shrink . Answer depends how much moister is in the rope. No shit! Should have read the yelp reviews before ordering from this company. read more

Unfortunately I could not tell you about the rope because it was never received. Moreover, it has been 8 weeks since I ordered this product and I still have not received the requested refund for a product that was never received. I've never experienced such poor customer service. Had I known better, I would have never given them my business (wish I would have seen these reviews on Yelp first, won't make that mistake again!). Talked to John ( the Owner) yesterday about a custom mooring pennant. Gave him my specs and he says he will email quote shortly ( within the day). Today, still no quote so I call him back. Absolutely horrible customer service. After placing an order and not getting my package for 12 days, few emails and calls later I finally spoke to a customer service representative who told me that my package was going to be shipped the next day and that they were out of stock with one rope and that I will get a refund for it. When I voiced my dissatisfaction the guy said ...." Alrighty, no problem..." . 2 weeks later, after I realized they provided the wrong address to the shipping company, got my package, with some other rope I haven't ordered, without the refund, without responses to emails. I ordered some rope from these guys March 1st. I'm on the East Coast of Canada and shipping usually takes around a week or 1.5 weeks from Ohio to here. After contacting them several times about not receiving my order after 3 weeks, no one had gotten back to me until today, one month later. They cancelled my order because shipping to Canada was too expensive, and two of the products I ordered were on backorder. They should have quantities listed on their site. I wouldn't order this product if I knew it was on backorder. I don't understand how shipping to Canada is too expensive if I'm the one paying for shipping. I called and spoke with John about him making a custom dog leash for my puppy. We stressed to him that our puppy was a Great Dane. One of the largest breeds. The product we received would have barely been big enough for a Labrador. The leash he sent us was 3/8ths of an inch thich. We also requested a loop near the clasp with we did not receive. When we called to complain he told us that the leash was plenty large enough and if the puppy was misbehaving that we should beat and kick him until he behaves. read more

However, I always read reviews when ordering online. I have to agree that when someone gives you a bad review you should use it to your companies benefit. There are a lot of companies that sell "rope", none of them compare!!! From the super friendly staff to the pro splicing crew, it's top notch all around. For any serious climber or arborist there's no other place. The selection rocks, and their website actually gives you real specs for anything you were thinking would be "good enough" so that you can custom order the "right stuff" and after tons of research, I've also found they still beat anybody else's price! Stuff shows up quickly too. Seriously, an all around awesome experience, if you need some high quality material at a really good price, I'm pretty sure your not going to find anywhere better.
