I have been here twice and have both times ordered the pork which is traditional version of the sandwich. They also have some interesting drink choices which are all Vietnamese. You can order a Vietnamese beer to go with your sandwich, line soda, or a Vietnamese coffee. The banh mi here is very good. The french bread is on point. The pate has a nice creamy texture and is not gamy. They put scallions in there sandwich. I enjoyed it but this may not be for everyone. If I wrote this review after my first visit I would say that this is the best banh mi O have had in Hon Kong. However, the second time around the bread wasn't as fresh and didn't have the crunchy exterior that I hope for in a baguette. This is probably because I had the sandwich close to dinner time. I will definitely come back when I am craving a banh mi.

Since we live in the Silicon Valley and have had our fair share of banh mi, we were very tempted to try it and to see if it is as good as the sandwiches back home. Both of us ordered a sandwich and brought it back to our hotel, which is just a few steps away from this place. The banh mi was actually pretty good. Not bad considering that Vietnamese food isn't expected to be good in Hong Kong. It just wasn't as good as it is back home. Also, it was a little bit expensive. However, no one was fazed as there was a pretty long line. It is because this particular location was featured on one of the local shows on TVB. I would say that it is worth checking out, especially if you've never had banh mi before.

Hence when I came across Vuong's (The 華僑 name is "Martin Wong" - 馬丁王), I was immediately curious. My love of banh mi got me through the door, but similarly to other Vietnamese spots, all I got was a mouthful of disappointment. Option #1 is their version of dac biet, a sort of house special that includes typical items like pickled veggies and pate, but also some really strange additions like slices of tomato and pork floss. More importantly the toasted baguette was a bit too thick, which practically ruined the sandwich. I had a few more bites before I succumbed to the notion I wasn't going to finish the banh mi. It really was that bad. So I gave them another shot. I went with chicken and pork and it was loaded with cucumbers and tomatoes. The bread was a little more tolerable this time around, but the shredded carrots, tomatoes, and cucumber was just too much like a salad in a sandwich. The meat was skimpy, but that is to be expected in HK. Speaking of salads, they have a whole section of the menu dedicated to it, but I haven't had any yet. Their saving grace -- the prices are fairly affordable. It's not exactly Viet cheap, but it's also in Jordan where nothing is terribly expensive. I'm not sure if I'll be back to Vuong's anytime soon, but I am sure there are better options out there. I'm counting on it.

They make their bread fresh, the pickles are nice and crunchy, and overall I really enjoyed it. I read the previous review and I was pretty excited as I got my sandwich, this is more of a booth than a restaurant but that's fine. I wanted to love this place and give it some more Yelp! Love. I unwrapped the sandwich with a sense of delicious trepidation.... at last... a great banh mi for me! I just barely bit into it and that is when I KNEW... this is not the banh mi you're looking for.... the pickles were okay but hardly crunchy by banh mi standards. The meat was actually quite good, but the problem was the bread... how could they not toast the bread?? Everyone knows that the baguette is the most important part of a banh mi, and there was no crunch as my teeth hit the bread... in fact... it was a bit... chewy... I don't mind this with a regular baguette sandwich but with a banh mi this is entirely unacceptable. So.... tasty meat ruined by mediocre pickles (they do give a good amount, too bad they're just meh) and a sad, sad baguette. Move along... move along...

We also tried the Reuben where the meat was a bit on the dry side, but expected from pastrami. It was nevertheless still very food. The same goes for the man, or woman, that created the first sandwich. Such an incredible thing, meat and veggies between two pieces of bread, that it makes me forget how simple it is. I've been going to Fresh for some years now, back before it changed its name and vibe, and I continued to go even after Subway, at half the price, offered bigger sandwiches. At fresh you got your selection of breads, cheeses, and meats all of which taste fresh (hence the name?) and unprocessed. The same can't be said for those square or triangular pieces of cheese - which are probably not far off from being actual plastic! To this day I'll pop in once a week or so and order a turkey and cheddar baguette. "Mayonnaise, butter and salad?" the waiter behind the counter asks. Salad as a main meal is not quite as main stream here in Hong Kong as it is in the US, so I feel like this was a hidden salad gem in a sea of a non-salad consuming society. Per my request having picked up a menu when we walked by last week, my husband brought me home a Cobb Salad, romaine lettuce based with the addition of black olives for about $100 HKD. Now I know the $100 HKD seems steep, I realize that. But I seek out fresh green vegetables at every single meal I consume and for $100HKD, I got exactly what I wanted...in the form of a great salad no less. This salad was huge (based on Hong Kong standards). Such a great portion and really a phenomenal cobb salad. The grilled chicken was seasoned really well, you get many regular sized slices of avacado and everything was super fresh. My husband said you see the person making your salad right there when you order it. Fresh, crisp, cold, well seasoned and tasty...all solid check marks for a great salad. I absolutely know I will have my husband bring home another salad for my dinner on his way home from work sometime again soon.

The women who run it are also nice and accommodating, so will try to help. I started with the Cobb salad but asked to hold the bacon and blue cheese, replacing carrots and another half hard boiled egg. It came to 82hkd, which is a lot for a salad, but the salad boxes have some serious weight to them after they are done packing in all of the fresh ingredients and they don't skimp on the protein (chicken, steak, etc) at all. I'm ok with the big size, but can imagine many would prefer a smaller option size, as it's a lot to finish, and rules this place out when looking for just an accompanying side to something else like a sandwich. After months of not having the "mixed greens" option, now it seems that their "mixed greens" is just a combination of kale and romaine, not the mesclun mix most would expect. Overall, I like this place and it's a good option for a healthy lunch, but I just wish they could handle people ordering a make-their-own salad, instead of trying to figure out which salad is closest to what they want and then trying to figure out the substitutes.
