Another visit to the 'Burg, another couple of days walking from one meal-snack-cup of coffee/espresso to another. And of course, the never ending search for dessert. Such a day had returned and I found myself near that familiar neon sign in the shape of a cone. I wasn't in the mood for a apple dumpling (rare I know) so I sought out the flavor of the day or other special flavors. And that's when the team told me about blueberry cobbler. The search was over. No need to try and convince me on it or continue to run down the list of options. My mind was set. I ordered a double scoop in a cup and commenced my walking. Like all things Kline, this was a creation of excellence. The blueberries were fresh, the bits of cobbler were perfectly baked, and the amount of all ingredients were perfectly balanced. At Smiley's, all of the cones are free, including the waffle cone. You get less quantity for the price you pay at Kline's and more at Smiley's. The cream content at Smiley's is locally sourced. Kline's? I don't know. Kline's features only one or two flavors weekly. Smileys offers 10+ flavors weekly. But both are excellent when it comes to taste! read more

I was a little disappointed after reading such great reviews; however only to find the only options were vanilla, chocolate, cake batter and s'mores. I get the few options part since they make it there but figured I'd have a little more to choose from. We tried s'mores and cake batter: it was decent but not sure I'd agree with the high ratings. Stopped here an Hour before Closing Time ! It was a stand & walk up type spot. At night it's lit up very nicely, I usually wouldn't dare cheat on coldstone but I know different areas have hella more options and different types of stuff. And this place did!! The Ambiance was cool pretty chill and you can sit outside to wait or sit and enjoy! Soo many flavors and toppings to choose from!!... We got Sundaes!! (Everything is made custard style,I should've gotten a real live banana split but I got a two scoop sundae with chocolate and vanilla toppings Oreo crumbles with caramel it was the most authentic ever it's as if they hand made it in front of you!! (Tho they make it in the kitchen lol) . This place is okay. It seems like a normal ice cream stand/shop in the Harrisonburg area. We passed it and thought to try it. I wanted to get something different like a specialty item or something, especially since I'm not from that area. The only available flavors at the time were vanilla, chocolate, and cookies & cream. The person in the window seemed impatient and annoyed with my questions about the specialty items. I was not going to get anything at that point but my daughter really wanted to try the ice cream. A solid choice if you're in the area. Not your traditional ice cream because it is in between soft serve and regular ice cream consistency. Klines is a local's favorite and I enjoy how they have weekly flavors besides chocolate and vanilla. Peanut butter cookies and cream, cookie crunch, and espresso crunch are my three favorites. A favorite spot when I was in college at JMU, Klines is a special place for some delicious ice cream. We stopped by one the way up the highway and was I glad I did. This spot has been around since 1943, making it all the more impressive. The quaint little ice cream shop has a friendly atmosphere when you approach and limited, but simple menu. Known for their "flavor of the week", this is a pretty happening spot for the townies and JMU students if you're looking for a nice refreshing treat. Thanks for bringing back old memories. Didn't know until just now that Kline's Dairy Bar is an institution around here. After a cone of black raspberry it really isn't hard to believe. All my love and gratitude to Yelp for helping us find this gem of a stop along our drive last Sunday! One quick ice cream search later and we found frozen heaven. We beat a pretty long line by about 10 minutes (love when that happens) and followed the appreciated and thought out barriers to the outdoor ordering windows. They had a line for entering and another for leaving, the team behind the window was wearing gloves and a mask, outdoor seating was roped off and unavailable. They took all of the precautions and it was still more than a wonderful experience. The day we visited, they only had 3 flavors available: vanilla, chocoolate and black raspberry. The choice was obvious and I must admit, as someone who can NEVER decide between a plethora of mouth watering flavors, I kind of liked the easy choice. Black raspberry was INCREDIBLE! It was pretty creamy, almost like a sorbet or softserve, and packed with flavor. If there can only be one flavor (besides chocolate and vanilla) on the menu, than man oh man am I happy this one was it. This shall officially be bookmarked on Yelp along with the rest of my all time favorite ice cream spots. read more

Yup, this is a Harrisonburg institution. I have been to this location as well as the one off US Route 33 (S. Main St. in Harrisonburg) and this one is the better location, albeit the less busier location of the two. The ice cream is delicious, it is affordable, and though it is in downtown Harrisonburg, I enjoyed coming here as a JMU student. The only thing I did not like was that parking could be a royal pain in the butt, but what it makes up in lack of parking, makes up in a good ice cream product that will bring everybody flocking. read more

Whenever I'm passing Harrisonburg or back in the area, I always make a point to stop by Kline's. It seems like every time I go the special flavor is black raspberry. I've never had it but heard it was pretty good! I've had vanilla, chocolate, and the twist. It's pretty darn good! So, they only have 3 flavors a day....vanilla, chocolate, and the special flavor. They only have a small variety of flavors, so that appeared boring. Then the person at the window informed me that they had a coffee milkshake, so I decided to try it. Pretty pricey for what was an average sized cup of vanilla soft serve ice cream with what tasted like an extremely mild chocolate mixed into it. No trace of coffee flavor at all. The texture was not real smooth, and all it was, was soft serve ice cream in a tall coffee cup. It tasted more like ice milk and not ice cream. The cost was over double what you'd pay anywhere else for the same product. Not impressed. read more

We came here while on a trip to Blue Ridge. The line was somewhat long but moved quickly we both got Sundae's and they were delicious! According to the signs out front the ice cream is made daily and it tasted like it. The sundae was 4.39 for a small and then additional toppings were 0.99. Not sure it gets any better than Kline's. Their homemade-in-house soft custard ice cream always comes in 3 flavors: chocolate, vanilla and the flavor of the week. They change their flavor out on Wednesdays and you can check which flavor is at what location on their website. My personal favorite flavor is the brownie batter. It literally tastes like the real thing and has brownie chunks throughout. I also love the cake batter with sprinkles. My favorite Harrisonburg location is the downtown shop although the other one is also good. I just like the atmosphere better at the downtown one. There is no indoor seating at both so make sure to go on a gorgeous day or just take one of their shakes to go that come in dozens of crave worthy flavors. Ordered chocolate ice cream and it was very watery/ icy and was 100% just vanilla mixed with chocolate syrup. Now if that's what you're looking for, this is the place to go. However, it was not advertised as that and as someone who is definitely a big chocolate fan and expects ice cream to be actual chocolate, I was disappointed.
