The spinners at the counter are wobbly, and there is a photo of the marriage of JKF and Jackie O. on the wall, but Kitty's Luncheonette is as real as it gets for traditional breakfasts and lunches in this part of Philadelphia. They don't know from brunch, and they close before happy hour; so don't bookmark it for your weekend morning meal, nor try to stop in after work. This is a 7 to 3:30 corner grill that had a few dozen thick scrapple slices frying to a dark brown while I drank their Ellis Coffee and awaited my first taste of their french toast. The house has about a dozen tables in two rooms and eight spinning stools along the counter that overlooks the chef workspace. It was about half full of neighborhood personalities who seemed to know each other as they were greeted by name. The server, a lovely young woman who is Kitty's niece, took care of me, and filled me in on the history of the institution, open since 1952! Yes. It looks its age, with family photos on the walls, and original floors, walls and stools. Either you get the deeply rubbed in culture here, or you don't. With its gritty charm and surprisingly good food, it is easy to develop a crush on Kitty, and want to visit her often. She is as authentic as the day is long. My three slices of thick egged toast were very good. A little sweet from the vanilla and sugar in the mix, and a little crispy on the edges where the hot steel melted that sugar and left its hardened residue. They know how to do FT here. $5.50 was a happy price. The java was strong and a little rough (bitter), but nothing to complain about. Again, her Joe is straight up Bunn-O-Matic. No expresso options with Kitty. Kitty's is very close to I-95, and an easy on/off if you want to stop before reaching Center City from the north. Not sure she could handle becoming a hit on the breakfast bookmark circuit, especially on weekends, so if you want to check her out, come on a weekday morning when the regular crowd is thinner. But, if you like hard stop traditional breakfast without any frills, give this old girl a go. read more

Philly local hot spot with great service and customers that say hello to each other. The hot roast pork sandwich is their special on Wednesday and it is a MUST have. From the interior you would not think this place is anything too special, but the food is the perfect lunch spot for a sandwich and soup. Their soups are delicious with 3 different choices everyday. I was surprised to see the little luncheonette so full for a Monday morning. You could tell the customers were regulars. The whole place had a very small town vibe. Anyway, I got scrambled eggs, turkey bacon, and home fries for breakfast. Hard to mess up the eggs and bacon, but I must say the home fries were awesome! I usually don't touch my home fries, it these were delicious. I ordered mine with peppers and onions, definitely a nice touch. My favorite thing about this place was all the pictures. Old wedding pictures and class pictures of local grade schools really give you a great history and feel for the 'hood...as does the Ellis coffee! Not one worker said hi when we walked in and not one thank you when we paid. The one worker was especially rude and have an attitude for any question we asked. Was working in the old hood the other day and was looking for a new lunch spot. Have passed Kitty's many a time but never stopped. So this time I figured I give it a try. I ordered a bowl of Chicken noodle soup, it was ok the broth was kind of weak although it had plenty of noodles and carrots. I also ordered a Italian chicken cutlet, with spinach, sharp provolone on a seeded roll. I was really disappointed with the chicken cutlet, it was moist and tasty, but was on the small side. It barely filled half the roll, leaving the ends of the roll with nothing but cheese and spinach. For the $8.00 they charge for the cutlet, the chicken could be better dispersed in the roll. But one not so great lunch won't stop me from trying them for breakfast! Hopefully will have better luck with that! Stay tuned for that review! read more

I've been traveling the states for the past 25 years for work and a customer took my business partner and I to Kittys for lunch. This place is one of the best spots(old school) in the country and I've been to 42 states. I had a chicken cutlet with spinach, long hot peppers and sharp Prov cheese. They told me that each cutlet was pan cooked in olive oil to order the way Kitty has been making them for years. The homemade seasoned breading was exceptional. I was told that Kitty ( 84 years old ) still comes in and makes the bread crumbs!! My partner had a crab cake platter which he said was exceptional and my customer had linguine& clams which he said is the best in philly/south jersey which is where his business hails. I have been to Kitty's a bunch of times and never once gotten something that I disliked. I used to vary my order but now every time I go it's always the chicken parm sandwich - I am hooked. Everything about it is delicious: the cutlets are tender and well-seasoned, unlike the waxy, dry cutlets you often get with chicken parm, the bread is terrific, and the sauce has lots of flavor and isn't too sweet. Best Western omelet with cheese in Port Richmond. It's full of roughly chopped sautéed onions and peppers. Not cheap on the cheese or ham either. The place is small and cozy. Your food never sits under a heat lamp for 15 mins like some of other neighborhood places. It's cooked 6 feet away from you and served to you as soon as it's cooked.
